About Tata Company  - 
Tata has been a part of the Indian automobile industry since its inception. In 1906, Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the company, established Tata Steel in Kolkata with a capital of Rs 5 lakh. The company produced steel and iron in their new plant. Soon after, they branched out into other businesses like tea and railways, which were also set up by Jamsetji Tata. His son, Jamshedji Tata took over as the company’s chairman after his father’s death in 1919. 
As time progressed, Jamshedji had given an impetus to both automobiles and parts manufacturing at Tata Motors Limited. 
After independence in 1947, the business continued to grow under Ratan Naval Tata who had joined the family business in 1943 as a director and later as a chairman from 1967 to 1981 and again from 1985 until his retirement in 1993.

Today, it is run by Ratan’s son, Rishut Ratan Mumbai-based automaker Tata Motors today sells 6 automotive marques - including two new ones - under its portfolio ranging from low end cars to luxury sedans and SUVs.
