In chapter 58 Kofuku ties Hiyori's and Yato's fates together and it's really sweet moment, my heart jumped a little...

BUT! It's Noragami and we know no happiness here.

Winding Moonrise - hard truths

Time to remind everyone Winding Moonrise is my wilful blindness and so I may jump around in the timeline. Also here is the Winding Moonrise masterpost

[Set: Sometime in the future of the story toward the end of the investigation.]

His figure under a peach blossom tree seems almost picturesque. If only branches were not bare and withered; his clothes were not in such disorder; and the moon was not a shallow mark in the sky, the painting might be named 'Taking shelter under a peach tree a scholar reflects in the moonlight' or some other literary title that suggested welcomed introspection. While his posture would match such a image, his inner turmoil mirrors tying a calligraphy brush to headless chicken and calling the final result art.

Lan Xichen and Jiang Yanli stumble across his lonely silhouette. From a glance, Lan Xichen recognizes his didi's distress as it brings back memories of thirteen years ago. While Jiang Yanli pauses with confusion, her gaze naturally circles Lan Wangji. The slight hill he stands on, the space around it, and the branches of the dead tree are devoid of her own didi.

"Hello, Second Master Lan, where is A-Xian?" The words carry forward easily as if it was only logical the two would be near another. A hint of concern accompanies a lilt in her tone.

"He is his room."

Biting his cheek, Lan Xichen wonders, Did you confess? Did Wei-gongzi reject you? How can I ask without...

He flickers to her.

"His room?" She peeks behind her. "Weren't you two sharing a room?"

Her sight is far-reaching but she is only mortal so the lack of light keeps her from noting much more than dull outlines. She most certainly cannot divine if Wei Wuxian is at the residence they took over in the aftermath. Her maternal instincts tingle once more.

"Did you fight?"

His manners kick in and Lan Wangji steps down. His ears do not struggle to understand her but it is rude to have a conversation at such a distance. When he reaches a few steps from them, he takes in the shallow cuts on her brow and the light bruises at her collar.

Shame washes over him. During such a situation, he not only chases his own earthly desires and upset Wei Wuxian but he turned his mind from the heavy matters at hand. He answers, "He wanted his own bed."

"Did you?" Lan Xichen leaves the rest unspoken.

He shakes his head.

Bouncing her attention between the two brothers, she inclines her head. The polite action would be to retreat and allow them to discuss in peace. A skill any lady from a powerful learns is when to be quiet and when to speak.

"Then why did you quarrel?" Lan Xichen folds his arms. If his brother never mentioned their fated bond, why is he acting almost as dejected as he had when he was rejected thirteen years ago.

His voice dips low as if afraid to voice it. "I overstepped boundaries. I angered him."

"Pardon me, Second Master Lan," she interjects. "That doesn't sound at all like A-Xian."

Wei Wuxian's receding back flickers behind his eyes. Clenching his fists, melachony marks him from head to toe if one knows how to read him. He insists that it is true with his silence.

"Is that what he said?" she counters. As Lan Xichen knows Lan Wangji, she knows her brothers. When it comes to those he holds dear, Wei Wuxian rarely takes any negativity to heart not that he takes to mind the ill-intent of others easily either.

When they were young, shortly after Wei Wuxian was brought into their home, a younger cousin of theirs who played with Jiang Cheng from birth became jealous of how close his da-ge was with Wei Wuxian. All of their family knew that her father gave away their pets and what the reason was.

Back then, at nine or ten Wei Wuxian rarely disobeyed the will of any in the Jiang family so when si-di coaxed him to play he followed along. The court yard was vast and one could easily lose themselves for hours. Two small children were easily missed from a banquet.

Si-di chattered about a toy room and directed Wei Wuxian into a smaller courtyard. As soon as Wei Wuxian entered, the gate was locked behind him. Si-di ampified his voice with cupped hands, calling for the four guard dogs his family kept.

Wei Wuxian's agonizing screams drew Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng toward him an half hour later. He plead to the heavens as if his life depended on it and so the two ran towards the noise with all of their energy. Her weak disposition meant Jiang Cheng left her in the dust. By the time she arrived Wei Wuxian trembled behind Jiang Cheng.

Scolding him while he carried Wei Wuxian on his back, his pants were torn. Waving at her, the two of them gestured for her to lead the way back to the banquet. As they talked, they came across si-di returning from the banquet with the keys.

She had to stop Jiang Cheng from beating si-di black and blue yet two weeks later the three were cheerfully wrecking havock as if they had always been a merry trio.

Lan Wangji says, "It was clear from his actions."

She blinks, bobbing her head. Again that sounds little like her brother. Her sisterly instincts kick in. "What exactly did he do?"

"He left."

"In the middle of an argument?"

Lan Wangji swallows. His throat burns. He cannot state the context from which Wei Wuxian left in polite company.

It dawns on Lan Xichen with the help of a particularly well-timed breeze. One could not blame him. The pack forbids the use of one's endowments to gain an advantage upon another or to intrude on another's inner state. Not to mention that the scents of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are so interwined that most others would already believe that they are mated. It is only the strange undertone of musk that clues him in.

He coughs. His face heats up. His mind spins like a car with its wheels stuck in the mud to help Lan Wangji come up with an excuse.

"No?"

Her gaze sharpens. Another aspect any lady of note must have are a good head and steady shoulders. Even if she held neither, from Lan Wangji's behavior and the Lan packs' antsiness, even the dullest person would have suspicions. So when she catches the self-supressed conflict on Lan Xichen's brow, she sighs.

"I apologize for overstepping. Did A-Xian reject your mate..." her words trail off as the term escapes her. The Jiang records are quite robust but her ancestors cared more for subduing werewolves than understanding them especially with the few numbers that existed in their homeland.

"Mnn." He averts his eyes. The piercing throb in chest is blinding. He inhales, balling his fist harder to avoid shifting. His skin is restless. His bones ache to escape the confines of his human form. This body is too small for all of emotions whirlpooling in him. Not that these emotions would die in his wolf-skin but could run or hunt or trick himself into thinking he was not just a man who was rejected by the love of his existence.

Lan Xichen taps Jiang Yanli's shoulder, directing her away. The implications stab him when things click for him. All of modesty slowed his burn. Shock rockets down his spine. He thinks, Wangji slept with Wei-gongzi without confessing?!

He never knew Lan Wangji was so bold and foolish.

"Wait," she pries because while she is not surprised Wei Wuxian might react strangely to that epiphany he would take it so lightly he would automatically reject a person. "Earlier, you said you didn't tell him, right?"

When Lan Wangji doesn't answer, she peers at Lan Xichen who nods.

"You're mistaken. He couldn't have rejected you for that," As she continues to speak, the Lan brothers see a family resemblence. "He can't answer a question he was never asked. So please tell me or ask me to leave but do not blame A-Xian for something he hasn't done."

She bares her metaphorical fangs. People call her weak. Her strength may be less than others but that does not mean she does not know how to weld it. It is as if they forget who supported the Jiang family in the years Jiang Cheng was absent or judge her for only being human with no skill in magic.

Lan Xichen blocks her. Her brother's heart endured a rejection nonetheless and so they should give him room.

After much thought, Lan Wangji selects his words more meticuliously than he usually does. "I blame him for nothing. I have no right to impose our bond on him."

She opens her mouth.

"Jin-furen, our family situation is complicated." Lan Xichen starts mediating. Conflict brews in stomach. He thinks of their parents and how he should have sheltered his brother better.

Everyone knows that their father married an unknown woman and was forced to refuse his inheritance. As she was very ill, Lan-furen never showed her face at events and Lan Qiren's brother secluded himself from the company to avoid creating conflict. From a young age, Jiang Yanli heard these rumors. Of course the gossip that Lan-furen was disfigured or that the pair did not have a joyous marriage reached her. She concludes from Lan Xichen's behavior that the their ill-fated relationship had a connection with mate bonds.

Her expression softens. Her maternal instinct stroked, but she has the experience of raising a spoiled child and thus the instinct for when it is appropriate to coax and coddle versus push and encourage.

"Telling him isn't an imposition," she considers. "I don't know your situation or what your father did. And I can't promise A-Xian will answer as you want, but not telling him, refusing to tell him takes away his right to choose signficantly more than informing him of your mate-bond would. You can't decide for him that you don't belong together."

Lan Wangji's heart drops at the implication that he has become his father through a different method. He opens and closes his mouth, speechless. He often chooses not to speak but this time words escape him.

"We should give him space." This time Lan Xichen is firm. Devastion is written on Lan Wangji's face. He thanks Jiang Yanli in his heart for being upfront with something their family should have addressed earlier.

She nods. "I won't him."

They don't make it more than a few feet when a new bombsheel drops.

Jin Ling runs from the east as if demons on his heels. He shouts, "Da-jiujiu disappeared!"

Episode 141: Hearts, Souls and Forever

The episode starts with Harsh being the supportive parent and expresses he is proud of Adi for taking care of Zoya so much and prioritising her needs and that he is happy they are standing by each other. Zoya is especially appreciative and happy with Harsh’s support. This is because having her ties broken with her own home and her own father, with Harsh being so supportive and loving towards her he is being the fatherly figure or surrogate father that she is yearning for. This may indicate that Harsh and Zoya’s relationship may be closer than her and her own father’s because of Waseem’s blind anger. 

Waseem talks suspiciously on the phone to someone about ruining Adi in such a way that he cannot even stand up again. It suggests life-threatening danger as Waseem says he will handle Zoya when she breaks down because he has done it once before. However Adiya will manage to overcome this trouble no matter how dangerous. This was indicated with the continuous grabbing each other’s hands and having to let them go but always, always returning to each other’s side and holding each other’s hand again. 

Zoya brings up the fact that her relationship with Adi has no name. She knows and is absolutely certain about their love no matter what, but she is worried with their relationship having no name that the world will insult the purity of their relationship and make a mockery of their pain and love that they have sought with so much angst, pain and uncertainty. 

Adi makes her follow him and answers her question with such heart “Zoya, main woh parindaa tha jo darr ke wajah se udd na bhool chuka tha. Tumne sirf mujhe dosti aur mohabbat nahi lautayaa hai. Tumne mujhe dobara udd na sikhaya hai. Jeena sikhaya hai, vishwaas karna sikhaya hai. Haan, jaanta hoon hum hamaare partners ki wajah se mile, humaare ex’s ki wajah se mile. This whole speech symbolised Adi and Zoya’s union. She taught him to stand up again after he was broken completely. She taught him how to live again after all the deception he faced that led him into an endless tunnel of darkness and rage that had consumed every fibre of his being which he had no idea how to let go of. She instilled everything good and pure inside of him again and more. He fought with her to release some of the fire inside of him and yet he wanted to make her laugh afterwards, not once but again and again owing to the connection between them that he did not understand back then. But now he not only understands but values completely the immense depth to their relationship that the world will never understand completely because only they went through that almost crippling pain. Their love is endless like the seven heavens. 

He continues “Zoya yeh sab mere liye bhi pehli baar hai, maine aisa kabhi nahi feel kiya hai. Aur agar isse pyaar nahi pagalpan kehte hain, toh haan main tumse pagalon walaa pyaar karta hoon. Zoya agar isse pyaar kehte hain na, toh isse pehle maine kabhi pyaar kiya hi nahi. Zoya tumhaare liye dunya se ladd ne ka mann karta hai. Dunya jahaan ki har khushi cheen laane ka mann karta hai. Aasmaan se saare taare noch laane ka mann karta hai. Aur kabhi yeh math sochna ke tumne mere parivaar se door kiya hai. Kyun ke tum woh ho jisne mujhe aadhe adhoore se poora kiya hai. And if this is not called love but madness, then yes I love you like a madman. Zoya if this is called love, then I have never loved before this. Zoya for you I feel like fighting the world. I feel like stealing all the world’s happiness. I feel like grabbing stars from the sky. And never think that you have separated me from my family. Because you are that person that turned me, an incomplete man, into a complete and wholesome man. And if now if we are to be separated for any reason then this bird will break so much that he will never be able to take flight again). With the repetition of Zoya’s name this is Adi’s way of telling her he means this for her and her only despite being in a relationship previously. He has never felt like this before and experienced these emotions. This differentiates between Pooja and his relationship and Adi and Zoya’s because they were close and they were best friends and used to share everything but they never were in love since all these complex and deep feelings of affection, yearning and wanting to be with Zoya desperately he never felt for Pooja at all. They were together but not living for each other. Whereas with Zoya he is living only for her, not with her. He managed to pick himself up when he lost Pooja but he knows without a doubt that he will never be able live again or pick himself up at all if he loses Zoya; this being the biggest difference between Pooja and his relationship and his relationship with Zoya. His whole speech completely encapsulates their relationship and how deeply their souls are interwined. 

Zoya replies “Hum kabhi nahi alag honge. Hum kabhi nahi alag honge kyun ke humaare alag hone se pehle humaari jaan chali jaayegi. Aditya humaari har dhadkan pe sirf aap ka naam hai” (We will never be separated. We will never be separated because before we separate I will die. Aditya, on every heart beat of mine, only your name resides). Although Zoya mentions that she will die before they are separated, this insinuation is rebuttled with the fact that Adi has mentioned multiple times since Adi and Zoya have come together that he will always protect her. Moreover although they had to let go of each other’s hands multiple times, they joined hands again and again with force and conviction no matter what the reason was that caused them to let go. And furthermore, Roshnaq’s simple yet heavy prayers also seem to allude that Adi and Zoya will always remain together with no sign of separation at all. 

Adi then proposes to her and says that he loves Zoya limitlessly (Bepannaah pyaar). Zoya emotionally replies that she chooses Aditya “iss janam mein aur agle har janam mein” (in this life and every life after this one). This clearly says that she does not wish to be with Yash ever again. What her and Adi have goes beyond what she had with Yash because Adi understands her and strengthens her in a way no one else ever did. Adi loves her but she also loves him and only lives for him. Her focus isn’t herself in this relationship like it was with Yash, her focus and attention is all on Adi. And fate has bound them together forever, their relationship goes beyond this life’s and world’s understanding.

Adi and Zoya get close and almost kiss until they are interrupted. 

Roshnaq becomes worried and sees that Waseem’s anger is like never before. Her worry is cumbersome but ultimately it is realised that Adiya will triumph over all evil and wrong. 

After the proposal Adi goes to get his wallet but an oncoming truck heads straight for him. Without any worry or concern for herself, Zoya runs to save him but is blinded by the headlights. During that someone manages to pull Adi away before the truck crushes him and only crushes his car. Zoya runs and hugs Adi so tightly and then checks to make sure he is okay and hugs him tightly again and the episode ends.

wierdogal, thank you for one more thought-provoking post! Yes, when Rogers mentioned that the Dark One doesn’t get cold, I was kind of torn between amusement and ‘aww’ :D His 'wallowing’ line was rather harsh but I do understand where it comes from - and you pretty much nailed it. His partner never gives up indeed. His partner. This is making me emotional again, and I don’t mind at all :D

As much as delighted I was to hear that ‘friend’ line (yeah, I know it sounded soppy and stuff but I love it anyway), the implication in it left me a bit confused as well. Like, to which moment exactly does it refer? Because Rumple didn’t look in any way *murderous* when he ran into Wish Hook near Alice’s cottage. Desperate? Yes. Resigned? Yes. Annoyed with Hook interfering? Yes. But I don’t believe he could harm him. The reason for that, though, is more difficult to explain. We just weren’t given enough material to work with. What do we know? 

1. Rumple and Wish Hook had exact same history as Rumple and original Killian, the only difference is that the curse wasn’t cast. Given that they’ve lived for a couple of centuries up to this point, I can imagine that Rumple could’ve called WH ‘his oldest friend’ as he did original Killian in s4. So this part of their relationship definitely stays - the part where they hate each other, and yet acknowledge the significance of their past, its impact on their lives, and the fact that their fates are forever interwined (more about that further)

2. Alice. Now they don’t just have a history together - which is definitely stuff of legend, but in no way suggests them becoming fast friends in the near future - thanks to Alice, they got a renewed history, the opportunity to start over with their changed selves. In other words, it was only possible because they changed, BUT this change alone would not have been enough because they just wouldn’t have seen it in one another if it weren’t for Alice who gave both of them unconditional affection and proved to them that they could indeed remain their better versions.

Afterwards, up to the casting of the curse, we don’t have much to work with. We don’t know anything except that Killian came to Rumple for help to prevent the curse from happening and got a white elephant. It may not seem very eloquent - at least in terms of Rumple/Killian relationship because as Rumple says, he’s doing it for Alice. BUT we do have this moment where Killian seriously suggests that Rumple could’ve done it for him (’Are you doing it for me? - I’m doing it for her’). I don’t imagine Killian asking this question if he thought it impossible (like, he could’ve absolutely asked ‘Why are you doing it’ instead) Rumple’s answer isn’t so self-explanatory, etiher. Yes, he does say that Alice is the main reason why he’s doing it (which of course makes sense), but he could’ve potentially said something like ‘No. I’m doing it for her.’ He hadn’t - and it tells us much. At this point, I imagine he mostly thinks of Killian as Alice’s father, someone she loves and someone who can make her happy. And it’s a great start which got a spectacular extension in their cursed version when they were finally able to form their relationship from scratch, to basically follow through that intiial ‘push’ Alice had given them. Their first cursed meeting is very symbolic in that sense. They don’t meet through Tilly. This time it’s Rumple who brings Killian and Alice together. Positions are reversed, and it’s the most beautiful thing ever because it made Rumple painfully aware of the ‘why’ of his initial actions towards Alice. I mean, of course he knew why he did it in the first place, but seeing the results of it, witnessing this touching story, experiencing their uncertainty and pain, helping them to get closer - and all of this while bonding with Killian as his partner who respects and admires him. I have not the words to describe how amazing that is. 

It got quite long, but the main point is, I do think that this ‘friend’ line refers to their old history and Rumple’s reluctance to kill Killian because: 

1. They had known each other from the beginning and had shaped each other’s life in many ways. This argument is kind of dubious, but I’ll try to expand on it further. 

2. Rumple wasn’t feeling particularly threatened by Hook. However, even from that perspective, Hook who can cause trouble (but isn’t capable of anything serious) isn’t much fun, either - I mean, why bother with the possibility of an impending trouble if you can get rid of its source once and for all? Even more so that it’s never been a problem for Rumple who ‘doesn’t like leaving things to chance’ (as he himself once says). 

The only explanation I can come up with is that he acknowledges Hook’s right to revenge (we had a similar situation with original Hook in s5 when Rumple does something that endangers the lives of others and responds with ‘acknowledged’ to Hook’s ‘I should kill you.’). Rumple acknowledges the impact of what he’d done. He acknowledges that he’d created himself a mortal enemy, and that very act was one of those permanent things that sealed his fate as the Dark One (while their first meeting, when Rumple was begging to give him his wife back, was the beginning of him becoming the Dark One). I imagine, just remembering all of it evokes *a lot* of emotion. 

So it’s not about Rumple being particularly nostalgic. For one, what is there to be nostalgic about? It’s not like it’d been some great adventure (well, in a way it was - psychologially, but considering the amount of emotional pain Rumple must have suffered, I don’t think it was the first thing on his mind). It’s about Rumple entering the greatest stage of self-discovery which basically showed him who he could be. It showed him that he could fight back and punish someone who caused him pain. By his account, the slate is clean. He took his revenge on the pirate, and what that pirate wants now is not his concern. And yet, he of course realizes that Hook has other views on the matter (as bascially do most people he crosses as the Dark One). Hook was the first, though. He was the evidence of what Rumple turned himself into. He was the evidence of Rumple taking the power for the first time in his life. He was the evidence of Rumple’s ability to do the hurting (instead of hurting himself). And that… that must have felt huge. At the same time, this very ablity, this very transformation from ‘weak’ to ‘strong’ was the thing that caused him the biggest pain - and Hook was the evidence to that as well. 

Hook knew both versions of Rumple - ‘a good man who was trying to protect his son’ and ‘the Crocodile’ Most people only knew the mask Rumple was presenting to the world. if we put his every relationship into two categories, the simplified version of it would probably look like ‘the overflow of feelings’ and ‘no feelings at all’. Rumple/Hook dynamics definitely belonged to the first one, and seeing as most of Rumple’s relationship (not just encounters) always consisted of the never-ending balancing between ‘this is who I am and I’m proud of it’ and ‘I don’t know who I am’, it’d make sense for him to recognize his relationship with Hook as something that gave him that kind of substance, that moving force that at first turned him (a good man) into a static villain and then did the complete opposite at the end of his journey (well, not directly, but if we leave alone the technicalities the main meaning stays - Rumple did do it for Killian and Alice). 

And also, now that I think of it, that ‘friend’ line coincides beautifully with Wish Hook’s initial offering of friendship. Back then, it was his initiative and Rumple just went along, but this line shows us that Rumple had also been thinking in those terms, and of course his relationship with Alice only intensified it and turned it from a rather abstract concept into a real one. 

Oh yes, you noticed the 'our Rumple’ line as well! I haven’t seen anyone mentioning it yet! It made my heart melt - like, for real. I actually secretly wanted them to call one another by their given names but never thought it was going to happen. Well, it didn’t quite happen, but we got pretty close to it!

Any ship with Rumple is something to wacth, I agree! And Golden Hook was especially interesting due to the heavy intensity of it. Still, I don’t believe they could’ve developed this kind relationship Rumple developed with Wish Hook, even though I’d be very tempted to see that kind of dynamic.

At first I was very skeptical about the “friend” line also pertaining to Killian but you have me convinced!

I agree though that the material we have for both original Hook and Wish Hook interacting with Rumple is limited. Then again with so many characters, focus on a particular ship or a particular character is very limited in the show unless moving the story along.

Rogers and Weaver, Wish Hook and Rumple or whatever we may call it was again another highlight of S7.
