NLC Issues Midnight Ultimatum to DSS Over Ajaero's Arrest, TUC and Amnesty Condemn FG.   The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Department of State Services (DSS), demanding the release of its President, Joe Ajaero, by midnight on Tuesday. Ajaero was arrested by the DSS at Abuja Airport on Monday while en route to the United Kingdom for a Trade Union Congress (TUC) event. The arrest has sparked outrage within the labour community, with the NLC convening an emergency meeting of its National Administrative Council (NAC) on Monday. In a communiqué issued afterward, the NLC condemned Ajaero's detention as illegal and politically motivated. Breaking: DSS Arrests NLC President Joe Ajaero at Abuja Airport   The union's statement read, "His detention is an affront to the rights of workers and the democratic principles of freedom of movement and expression." The NLC further warned that it has placed all affiliates, state councils, civil society allies, and Nigerians on high alert over the "troubling development." They demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Ajaero. Ajaero, who had previously responded to police allegations of terrorism financing in August, has maintained his innocence. His detention has further escalated tensions between the NLC and the Federal Government, as the union also called for a reversal of the current hike in petrol prices to ₦617 per litre. The NLC argued that the arrest is an attempt to silence dissent and sabotage efforts to implement the new National Minimum Wage. The union has summoned an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting for Tuesday morning to strategize on its next steps. TUC and Amnesty International Condemn Arrest In solidarity with the NLC, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has also condemned Ajaero's arrest, describing it as a violation of his fundamental rights. TUC President Festus Osifo stated, "This arrest sets a dangerous precedence that threatens not only the leadership of the Nigerian labour movement but also the voices of millions of working-class Nigerians." Osifo urged the government to prioritize dialogue over intimidation and harassment, noting that unions have always championed peaceful negotiations. Amnesty International Nigeria also joined the chorus of condemnation. In a statement, the Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, called for Ajaero's immediate and unconditional release, labeling the arrest as part of a growing crackdown on human rights under President Bola Tinubu's administration. "President Bola Tinubu is setting a new record of impunity," Sanusi said. He pointed out that Ajaero's arrest is a violation of international human rights law, which protects the rights of workers to organize and participate in trade union activities. Amnesty International also highlighted Nigeria's obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and other international treaties, stressing that the government must respect and protect the rights of workers. Growing Tensions Between Labour and FG This latest incident has amplified concerns about the state of human rights and civic space in Nigeria. The NLC's strong stance, coupled with growing discontent over economic policies such as the fuel price hike, suggests that the country may face heightened labour unrest if the situation remains unresolved. With the NLC's ultimatum in place, all eyes are now on the government and security agencies to see how they will respond. The arrest of Ajaero has brought to the forefront the strained relationship between the Federal Government and the labour movement, which is now gearing up for what could be a decisive moment in Nigeria's ongoing struggle over workers' rights and economic justice

[ad_1] To offset the effects of the energy crisis, the caretaker government has mandated energy-saving measures such as closing all malls and marketplaces at sunset. Under the ‘energy saving plan,’ the previous Shehbaz government also announced the closure of markets across the country by 8 p.m. On June 6, the former federal minister made the revelation to journalists during a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) presided over by then-prime minister Shehbaz Sharif. “The NEC has approved an energy conservation plan under which shops and commercial centres will close by 8 p.m.,” he said, stressing that energy has become a major concern for Pakistan due to rising worldwide prices. However, no action was taken to execute the reforms announced by the previous government. According to sources close to the situation, the present energy-saving strategy will be implemented from October 1 to February 15. According to reports, the decision will be implemented by the administrations of the four provinces, and a draught for permanent law is also being developed. According to sources, closing markets at sundown would save 1500MW of electricity. Meanwhile, conversations with all chambers of commerce and business communities have begun in order to close markets earlier. [ad_2]

In a dramatic turn of events, a combined team of security agencies, suspected to be from the Department of State Services (DSS), invaded the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Wednesday evening.   This invasion came just hours after the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which condemned the government's harsh treatment of #EndBadGovernance activists.   Witnesses reported that the armed security personnel arrived in large numbers, forcibly breaking into several floors of the Labour House and ransacking offices, books, and files.   Read Also: NLC Sends 7 Fresh Demands To Tinubu Government over #EndBadGovernance Protest   A source indicated that the agents seized various materials, alleging they were used to incite and organize the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.   Earlier in the day, the NLC’s NEC issued a strong communique demanding the reversal of what it termed “ill-conceived policies of the government,” which they claimed had led to the current economic crisis. The NLC emphasized the need for policies that prioritize the welfare of the people, create jobs, and ensure the fair distribution of resources.   Read Also: Protests: DSS Grills Seven Polish Nationals Arrested In Kano   The communique was signed by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja.   “The government must implement policies that prioritize the welfare of the people, create jobs, and ensure fair distribution of resources,” the executive body stated.   The NLC directed workers nationwide to continue to protect themselves while advocating for their rights, stressing their commitment to non-violence. The organization reiterated its dedication to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and the broader population, vowing to persist in their efforts to ensure justice, equity, and good governance in Nigeria.   In response to the recent violence against protesters, the NLC called for a National Day of Mourning to honor those killed or injured in the protests. They also demanded an independent investigation into the attacks on protesters, holding that those responsible must be held accountable and justice must be served to the victims and their families. Additionally, the NLC called for the immediate release of peaceful protesters detained by the government.   “The NEC-in-session urges the federal government to engage in meaningful dialogue with representatives of the protesters, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to resolve all the issues at stake to end the national carnage,” the communique read. “This is to avoid NLC being compelled [to] direct its members to stay home for the safety of their lives.”   The NEC reiterated that the government can only quell democratic protests through concrete actions and reasonable dialogue, not by threatening the lives of citizens already suffering from police brutality.   The NLC also reminded the government of previous warnings about the consequences of adopting the anti-poor advice of the World Bank and IMF, particularly concerning the removal of the petrol subsidy policy in May. They criticized the government for failing to implement adequate safeguards to mitigate the resulting suffering among the populace.   As of the time of this report, it remains unclear why the DSS ransacked the NLC office or what specific items they were searching for.

By • Olalekan Fagbade Preident Tinubu directs immediate action plan to tackle impending flood across rhe Country, makes appointment President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday directed an immediate plan of action to stem the tide of impending flooding across the country. Mr Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, made this known in a statement in Abuja. “To this effect, he (Tinubu) has appointed Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi as the Chairman of a committee to produce a road map to harmonise the recent National Economic Council (NEC) report on flood. “And the 2022 National Flood Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan as well as all other national reports on flood. “The Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi, will serve as the Vice Chairman of the committee which is expected to submit its recommendations in seven days.” Nkwocha said during an emergency meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the president gave marching orders to the committee for an action plan on all the reports. Shettima said it was best to be proactive than to be reactive. “Based on the submissions by the Director-General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) , the situation is not that terrible but to be forewarned is to be forearmed. “The submissions by the other relevant stakeholders are equally poignant and we can’t afford to take chances. “Though the situation is not as bad as we might think, we need to set up a committee so that the report of the Presidential Committee and the 2022 Federal Executive Council – approved broad preparedness plan should be harmonised and implemented immediately.” Shettima noted that a feasible roadmap would address the flood crisis in Nigeria, adding that responsibilities would be shouldered by the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Federal Government. “I deliberately invited the NEDC and NDDC so that with whatever resources that NEMA has, they have to be released to the states so that they can start making preparations for any eventuality. “Based on the Presidential directive, I will meet with the Chief Executives of the NEDC and NDDC for states that are under their coverage. There should be interventions from them. “For NEDC they can take care of Taraba, Bauchi and Adamawa states. For NDDC, they can take care of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Cross River states.” Shettima said that for states like Ebonyi, Kogi and Benue states, government would mobilise from its savings and deploy same to assist them. “We have to share responsibilities and hence the immediate need for the roadmap to be implemented,” he stated. The Chief Executives of NiMet, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), National Water Resources Institute, NEMA and NiHSA, all made presentations with reactions from Governors of Bauchi, Kogi, Ebonyi and Cross River States. Akwa Ibom and Nasarawa State Governors were represented by their deputies. Other members of the committee included Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of State for Environment, Kunle Salako; Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Bello Goronyo; Chief Executives of NEMA, NIWA and NiHSA, among others. The Special Adviser to the President on NEC and Climate Change, Rukaiya El-Rufai, will serve as Secretary of the committee. (NAN) #Tinubudirectsimmediateplantotacklefloodacrossthecountry
