Whilst taking a little break from making a more research-heavy blog, I have put together some DIY decorative panels for my home office. I was originally planning to create some acoustic panels but I decided to just go with the decorative panels instead as I don’t record a great deal of audio but the principal would be very similar.

The only difference with acoustic panels is that they would be infilled with acoustic insulation like Rockwools sound insulation slab. You would construct your frame to accommodate the insulation to minimise the amount of cutting. Acoustic panels can reduce echo when recording audio.

All of the materials were from B&Q and the fabric was from Dunelm.

For my case, as these are just decorative panels I decided to go for a 700x400x40mm frame. I purchased some corner brackets which were 40mm wide to firm up the frame which is a bit OTT for a decorative panel but I purchased a bunch of the material when I was still planning to construct heavier acoustic panels so I just used them anyway.

I started the frame by cutting down the timber to 40mm wide strips with the circular saw. I gave the timber a quick sand down as the timber I was using was quite rough. The fence slat I was using was 1800mm in length which worked out perfectly as I was able to get 2 lengths of 700mm and 1 length of 400mm per strip.

Once I had cut all the wood into the sizes I needed, I then screwed the frame together placing one 40mm screw through each corner. I fixed two corner brackets at opposite ends which made the frame feel quite solid. I then fixed a timber backing piece in the centre of the frame where I attached the hook for hanging the panel up. I moved the backing piece up closer to one end for the tartan panel that I planned on fixing vertically.

I then took out the fabric and ironed out the majority of creases. I placed the fabric face down on the table and lined up the frame with where I wanted it to go. So, one of my fabric covers was printed with stags and the other was a tartan. I thought the tartan would be easier as I could line up the lines with the frame, it turned out that the tartan was not so easy as when I pulled the fabric tight it distorted the lines making the stag fabric allot easier to work with as it was much more forgiving.

It was then a case of folding up the bottom and top and stapling it into place whilst making sure the fabric was pulled up quite tight. After this, I folded over the sides in the same way you would fold over a Christmas present to achieve neat corners and stapled the sides over as well.

I then cut away any excess fabric and fitted a backing fabric to the rear of the frame. If these were acoustic panels this backing fabric would have held in place the insulation. I cut a little gap for the hanger hook to go through and then repeated the process for the other panel.

Once both panels were complete I measured where I wanted the panels to go using the tape and fixed the heavy duty picture hook to the wall. If this was a larger acoustic panel rather than a decorative one I would need to bolster up the hanging by fitting an extra hook or adding in some velcrow hanging strips.

And below is the finished result! I wasn’t too pleased with the tartan panel but the stag panel worked out really well. The addition of these panels certainly spruced up my home office and was really quite cheap and fun to make.  Hopefully, this blog gave you some ideas to make your own acoustic / decorative panels.

Why I think the Santander share price could be the bargain of the year

Buying share prices when they are low and selling them when they are high is an obvious route to investment success. Putting it into practice, though, is generally far more challenging than it seems in theory. One reason for this is that when shares are cheap, as the Santander (LSE: BNC) share price seems to be at the present time, there’s a risk there could be further near-term falls.

However, with the bank appearing to offer growth potential as well as a high degree of diversification, it could offer improving performance in the long run. Alongside another good value share that reported an encouraging update on Wednesday, it could be worth buying today.

Improving performance

The other company in question is home furnishings retailer Dunelm (LSE: DNLM). Its third quarter trading update showed it’s making good progress in expanding its online and omnichannel retailing performance. Like-for-like (LFL) sales growth was 12.5%, with its LFL growth in stores rising by 9.8% at a time when many UK-focused retailers are experiencing challenging operating conditions.

Furthermore, there was an increase in the company’s gross margin of 90 basis points. Improved sourcing and the closure of dilutive Worldstores businesses were the key reasons for this, with the company expecting there to be a further improvement in profitability in the final quarter of the year.

Since Dunelm is forecast to post a rise in earnings of 7% in the current year, it seems to be performing well at a time when it’s making major changes to its business model. With consumers continuing to go online for a variety of products, the trend towards omnichannel retailing could suit the business. Therefore, trading on a price-to-earnings growth (PEG) ratio of 1.9, it could offer good value for money.

Low valuation

As mentioned, the Santander share price appears to be cheap at present. It trades on a PEG ratio of only 0.9, which suggests that it has a wide margin of safety. This is largely due to the poor performance of the bank’s shares over the last few years, declining 34% over the last five years.

The problem facing investors is that it’s difficult to catch a falling knife. There has been little evidence to suggest that investors are becoming more positive about the prospects for the stock over recent months, with it continuing to lag the FTSE 100 even as the index has moved higher.

Therefore, there’s a risk that buying Santander now could mean that an investor experiences paper losses in the short run. In the long run, though, the bank’s position within a wide range of markets could mean it offers greater diversity than many of its sector peers, while it may be able to benefit from the continued positive growth rate of the global economy.

As such, since it trades on a low valuation, the stock could be attractive at the present time. There may be some short-term pain ahead, but its dividend yield of 6.2% and recovery potential over the long run could mean it becomes increasingly appealing to value investors.

I am by no means a professional DIYer, although I do try my hand at it every now and then, so let’s see how we can create this rustic yet modern kitchen?

If you are going for wooden furniture and fittings, it is quite simple to upcycle old tables and chairs. They just need a bit of TLC, a good sanding and two thin coats of water-based paint.

Shabby chic is finding alternative uses for products, like turning a door into a kitchen worktop or turning empty wooden crates into shelves, or refurbishing items to be used once again.

Shabby Chic

To get a true shabby chic appearance for your wooden furniture choose two different colours for the two layers of paint such as a grey covered with white or for statement furniture, try a pink bottom coat and a deep blue top coat.

Once you have sanded the furniture and the first layer of paint is dry, apply wax with an artists’ paint brush or a chop stick to areas of the furniture you want to look distressed. When you apply the second layer you will notice the paint doesn’t stick to the waxed areas. This is what gives it the shabby chic look.

When the second layer is dry, wipe down the areas you waxed after layer one. This will reveal the base colour and you will have a shabby looking piece of furniture (in a good way obviously). Alternatively, you could just wax areas of the wood you’d like visible and then paint it. Then when you rub the waxed areas down, it will reveal the original wood beneath.

You can apply this technique to all sorts of furniture, from kitchen cupboards to worktops and it looks great in any room. Beds, bedside cabinets, desks, shelves, picture frames – the options are endless.

Appliances

The modern chic kitchen pictured above has incorporated stainless steel with the oven and accessories, but I think you could lose the clinical and futuristic steel to have something more old school if you’d prefer. A quick search online and you can find some bargain ovens that would look great in this particular kitchen.

I love mixing a traditional kitchen with high tech appliances so I wouldn’t want a cheap oven (sorry to be a snob). I am besotted with the Rangemaster ovens, they are sleek, classic and they’d look divine in this kitchen. They also have all of the mod cons of a new age oven. For the kitchen appliances you may not want to up-cycle or buy second hand goods, however this doesn’t mean there aren’t deals to discover on appliances that look a retro. Next, Dunelm, Very and Argos all have a reasonably priced range of chic kettles, toasters and microwaves. These appliances are ideal for adding a burst of colour into the room too.

Accessories, Lighting and Pictures

If you really want to go shabby chic, you could go as far as making your own lighting! There are some great ideas on Pinterest to create beautiful handmade lights using cheap and basic equipment; such as twine lights that require PVA glue, a balloon, and some twine string to create the most rustic look.

When looking for accessories it’s time to become a bargain hunter again going to car boots and salvage yards as they are a great place to pick up some cheap and quirky accessories for your home. Vintage signage, vases, ornaments, candle stick holders and fruit bowls are often readily available at these places.

  Even The Kitchen Sink!

Yes, they are actually pretty easy to get hold of on the cheap. Websites such as preloved.co.uk, freecycle.org or eBay have a variety of old sinks to be had at good prices. Some may need a bit of a scrub, but it could save you hundreds of pounds.

Again our featured chic and modern kitchen has a matching stainless steel sink, however, if you decide stainless steel isn’t your cup of tea, a traditional ceramic sink is always a safe bet. Alternatively, you could get creative and try to build a sink like this (Obviously apply proper wood treatment etc to prevent it leaking).

Here’s why investing in these FTSE 250 dividend stocks could seriously top up your State Pension

Today I’m looking at two FTSE 250 dividend stocks which I think are undervalued compared to their long-term earnings potential.

Both companies operate in the retail sector, but they enjoy advantages which I think put them ahead of the crowd in this difficult market.

My first company is homewares retailer Dunelm Group (LSE: DNLM). Dunelm’s share price was up by nearly 6% at the time of writing, after the company reported a 4.2% increase in like-for-like sales for the year ended 30 June.

Total sales rose by 9.2% last year and the group’s underlying pre-tax profit edged higher to £93.1m. Free cash flow, historically a strong point, rose from £14.2m to £52.9m.

Unique customer numbers rose by 18% online and by 5% in-store. The Dunelm.com channel now represents 13.5% of total sales, up from 11.2% the previous year.

Only one problem is left

In 2016, Dunelm acquired the loss-making Worldstores online retail business. Worldstores is still losing money, but the technology acquired from this online-only retailer is being used to build a new online platform for the Dunelm.com brand.

This makes sense to me. By unifying its sales and supply chain, it should enjoy marketing advantages and make operational cost savings.

30% returns shouldn’t be ignored

Dunelm’s 9% operating margin is fairly impressive for a big retailer. But what’s far more impressive is the group’s track record of generating a 30%+ return on capital employed.

Although this figure has fallen from a peak of 50% in 2014, today’s figures show that even after exceptional costs, this business generated £30 of operating profit for every £100 of capital invested.

High returns of this kind usually mean that companies can fund growth and pay dividends without needing too much debt. This can be a formula for a great long-term investment.

Looking ahead, Dunelm’s 2019 forecast P/E of 12 and 5.3% yield seem too cheap to me. I’d rate this stock as a buy.

Here’s one I bought earlier

One retailer that’s already earned a place in my own portfolio is Dixons Carphone (LSE: DC). The owner of the Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse businesses is the UK market leader in this sector. It also operates in nine other European countries, with a particularly strong presence in Scandinavia and Greece.

Dixons is still in turnaround mode under new boss Alex Baldock. In addition to the well-documented challenges facing bricks-and-mortar retailers, the firm is also facing changes in the mobile market. Customers are keeping their phones for longer and choosing cheaper SIM-only contracts, which are less profitable for the retailer.

Despite these headwinds, the group’s latest trading statement showed that revenue rose by 13% during the 13 weeks to 28 July. Like-for-like sales in the UK and Ireland were flat, cementing the group’s leading share of the UK market.

I plan to buy more

I intend to buy more Dixons Carphone shares for my portfolio over the next few weeks. Although earnings per share are expected to fall by about 20% this year, in my view this bad news is already reflected in the share price.

Dixons’ stock currently trades on 7.9 times forecast earnings, with a well-covered 6.8% dividend yield. I think now is the time to buy, ahead of an expected return to growth in 2019.

Why I’d dump the Next share price for this 5.5% income champ

Until the beginning of August, Next (LSE: NXT) was one of the FTSE 100’s top performing stocks. However, after publishing worse-than-expected trading figures at the beginning of the month, shares in the fashion retailer have slumped by more than 11%.

As market sentiment turns against Next, I’ll later explore another retail sector champion that could be a better buy for your portfolio.

Disappointing update

Shares in Next gained investor support throughout the first half of 2018 as the company smashed growth expectations. In May, the firm reported that full price sales for the 14 weeks to May 7 jumped 6% year-on-year, led by an 18.1% increase in online sales. 

After reporting these numbers, shares in the company leapt higher. It seemed Next had cracked the code of online retailing. Unfortunately, growth slowed during the second half. 

For the 12 weeks to the end of July, total sales grew 2.8% and online growth slowed to 12.5%. What’s more, in its August trading update, the company warned that business throughout the second half of 2018 is likely to disappoint. After a profitable first half, management is expecting more subdued sales growth throughout the rest of the year. 

For the year to January 2019, management is forecasting full-price sales growth of 1%. At the half-year mark, full-price sales were up 4.5% year on year. Based on these numbers, it seems management is expecting a significant deterioration in trading throughout the rest of the year.

Looking at this outlook, I’m not surprised investors have turned their back on Next. Shares in the company aren’t particularly cheap, trading at a forward P/E of 12.4, which to me seems appropriate for a business that is hardly growing.

But over at Next’s peer Dunelm (LSE: DNLM), the furnishings and home goods retailer is trading at a forward earnings multiple of 11.8, for example.

Online retail champion 

There are other reasons to like Dunelm over Next. Even though the warm summer has kept consumers out of its stores, the group’s online business has blossomed. 

A July trading update reported growth at its online business of more than 40%. Overall trading revenues for the period were flat as online growth offset the offline decline.

For the full year, the company is expecting to report a dip in profits. Pre-tax profit before exceptional items will fall to around £102m from £109m based on current trading conditions. Declining earnings are a result of losses taken on two businesses Dunelm has acquired, Worldstores.co.uk and Kiddicare.com.

Worldstores business accounted for around £8.5m of those trading losses. However, management expects losses to reduce “significantly” in 2019.

Considering Dunelm’s investment in its business and growth of the online arm, I reckon the company has a better outlook than peer Next.

And with a dividend yield of 5.5%, Dunelm’s shareholders will be paid to wait for growth to return. Next yields around 4.4% including special dividends.

2 dirt-cheap FTSE 250 dividend shares I’d buy right now

Finding shares which offer strong dividend prospects in the long run is never straightforward. Inevitably, performances of various sectors change over time and, on occasion, a stock can underperform versus previous expectations.

However, with the FTSE 250 continuing to offer good value for money, there seems to be a number of dividend shares which offer wide margins of safety. As such, the risk/reward ratio may be in an investor’s favour right now.

With that in mind, here are two companies which seem to offer excellent value for money and impressive income outlooks.

Improving outlook

Although the UK retail sector has experienced a difficult period, there could be value investing opportunities on offer. One company which looks set to ride out the present difficulties — in terms of delivering earnings growth despite low consumer confidence — is Dunelm (LSE: DNLM).

The home furnishings retailer is expected to report a bottom line rise of 6% in the current year, followed by further growth of 10% next year. Despite this, the company trades on a price-to-earnings growth (PEG) ratio of just 1.4, which suggests that it offers a wide margin of safety. This also indicates it could offer capital growth potential over the medium term.

With Dunelm having a dividend yield of almost 5%, it offers inflation-beating income prospects. And since its shareholder payouts are covered 1.7 times by profit, they could prove to be highly sustainable over the coming years. That’s especially the case since wage growth in the UK is now ahead of inflation for the first time in over a year. This could prompt improving consumer confidence and provide a boost to the wider retail sector.

Resilient outlook

Also offering a low valuation and impressive dividend prospects in the retail sector is Pets at Home (LSE: PETS). The company is currently experiencing a challenging period, with its bottom line due to rise by less than 3% per annum over the next two years. However, its business model appears to be sound and since consumer spending on pets can prove to be more robust than other areas during economically-challenging periods, the stock could have some defensive qualities.

With a dividend yield of around 4.8%, the company appears to offer a robust income return. There seems to be scope for it to pay a higher dividend over the next few years, even if profitability fails to move significantly higher. Its payout ratio stands at 55%, which doesn’t appear to be especially high. As such, investors may be able to enjoy inflation-beating dividend growth alongside one of the higher yields in the FTSE 250.

Since Pets at Home trades on a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of around 13, it could offer good value for money. With a robust operating model and encouraging income prospects, it could prove to be a sound dividend buy for the long term.

2 FTSE 250 dividend stocks yielding 5%+ that I’d buy with £2,000 today

Today I’m looking at two FTSE 250-listed retailers with 5%+ dividend yields and bargain basement valuations. I believe both stocks could be too cheap to ignore at current levels.

No place like home

Shares of homewares retailer Dunelm Group (LSE: DNLM) rose by 8% in early trade on Thursday, after the firm said sales rose by 5.1% to £268.2m during the 13 weeks to 31 March.

This sales revival is being driven by online growth. Like-for-like online sales have risen by 36.4% to £75.5m during the nine months to 31 March. The internet now accounts for 16% of all sales, up from 12% at this point last year.

Shopping for homewares from the comfort of your sofa is obviously popular with Dunelm customers. But how is this shift affecting the group’s profits?

A very safe dividend yield

Today’s update shows us that like-for-like store sales rose by 2.8% during the first nine months of the financial year. Store performance appears to be stable, which should help to protect the group’s margins from being eroded by fixed store costs.

However, the group’s operating margin fell from 14.6% to 9.9% last year. Luckily, February’s half-year results show that this figure improved to 10.6% during the six months to 31 December. I’d hope to see this figure rise again over the full year, although it’s worth noting that this is already better than many other retailers can manage.

Indeed, I believe Dunelm remains a quality stock. Cash generation is good and debt levels are fairly low. The group’s forecast yield has dropped to 4.8% after today’s gains, but this payout should be covered 1.7 times by profits and looks very safe to me. Trading on 12.8 times forecast earnings, I rate the shares as a buy.

I’d buy more today

One of the larger positions in my personal portfolio is Dixons Carphone (LSE: DC). Shares in this electrical and communications retailer have lost 60% of their value since the end of 2015.

My view is that this sell-off has gone too far. Although market conditions are challenging and the group faces tough competition on pricing from big online retailers, I rate the shares as one of the best buys in the retail sector.

Why I’m keen

Dixons Carphone has recently gone through a period of management change. The arrival of new chief executive Alex Baldock has been followed by a number of other departures among senior management.

Mr Baldock has previous experience in online retail and asset finance. These should both prove relevant as the group grows its online sales and its Your Plan customer credit operation, which has already approved £1.6bn of credit for more than 500,000 customers.

I suspect the firm’s future may involve customers paying a monthly charge for appliances, rather than buying them. In a similar way to the new car market, this would allow customers access to the latest devices without having to pay up front. This could be a good way for the group to develop a loyal customer base and enjoy additional profits from selling finance.

In today’s market, Dixons Carphone shares trade on 7.6 times forecast earnings with a dividend yield of 5.9% that’s covered twice by earnings. Debt levels are very low and cash generation remains good. In my view this is an offer that’s too good to ignore.

Why these value stocks could be contrarian buys in 2017

Big mining stocks delivered huge profits last year for investors who were willing to buy when everyone was selling. But that trade has passed, and I believe the big wins are now in the bank.

If you want to follow Warren Buffett’s advice to “be greedy when others are fearful”, you’ll probably have to look elsewhere in 2017.

One option is the retail sector. Big retailers are out of favour and struggling with weak footfall and falling sales. I suspect some companies may end up in serious trouble. But I believe there are some quality operators who will survive this slowdown and adapt successfully.

In this article I’ll consider two possible choices, one of which I’ve recently added to my own portfolio.

A homely stock for investors

Homewares retailer Dunelm Group (LSE: DNLM) delivered a mixed set of half-year results on Wednesday, triggering a 9% fall in the group’s share price.

Like-for-like sales fell by 1.6% during the six months to 31 December. Pre-tax profit fell by 11% to £67m during the same period, excluding the Worldstores acquisition at the end of last year.

The problem is that Worldstores was bought out of administration and is currently lossmaking. During the first five weeks of Dunelm’s ownership, the acquired business lost £1.8m. And management expects this business to lose nearly £10m during the current financial year.

However, integrating the new buy into Dunelm is expected to deliver cost savings of £10m per year in the “short-to-medium term”. And chief executive John Browett is confident that Worldstores can be returned to profit.

Dunelm’s track record suggests that the group could be worth a closer look. Return on capital employed has averaged 50% over the last five years, and the group’s operating margin is about 15%. Cash generation has always been strong.

Consensus profit forecasts for 2016/17 put Dunelm shares on a forecast P/E of about 14, with a prospective yield of 4.6%. This could be a contrarian opportunity. But I believe there are other, cheaper, opportunities that might be worth considering first.

Has this unpopular stock bottomed out?

Fashion retailer Next (LSE: NXT) has long enjoyed a reputation for under-promising and over-delivering on profits. But the group’s share price has now fallen by 41% over the last year.

Next stock currently trades on a forecast P/E of just nine and offers a yield of 4.6%. That’s unusually cheap for such a high quality business. After all, Next doesn’t have much debt and has delivered an average return on capital of 61% over the last five years.

One reason for this is that Next’s customers owe the firm about £1bn through its store card scheme. Customers are charged an interest rate of 22%, making this loan book a significant cash cow for the firm.

Looking ahead, Next should eventually start to benefit from falling retail rents in many areas of the UK. The group would also see its costs fall if the pound gains strength against the dollar.

I believe Next offers decent value at under £40 and could deliver a solid recovery over the next few years. In the meantime, the shares are backed by an attractive yield and a strong balance sheet, so downside risks should be limited.
