Prince was not one to send a lot of e-mails, but for teen TV star Yara Shahidi, he made an exception.
It helped that her dad Afshin was the superstar’s longtime photographer, who has a wealth of stories behind his many photos of the musician, including one from a London concert at which Yara was the youngest fan in attendance.
Prince messaged the politically vocal star a few years ago to tell her, artist to artist, that he was proud of her. Yara’s popular ABC sitcom Black-ish explores issues of race and class through the everyday experiences of her character Zoey’s family. Next year, Zoey’s story will continue to evolve in a spinoff, Grown-ish, that will explore many of the same issues in a new setting: college.
Yara still remembers Prince’s fuzzy purple rug from when she was little, but nothing was as enduringly influential as her father’s close working relationship with his world-famous boss. In fact, that’s what laid the groundwork for the family’s high expectations of their “creative experiences, work relationships, and personal relationships,” Yara tells TIME.
“It was about not seeing limitations,” Afshin adds. With an assist from his book Prince: A Private View, which compiles images of the megastar holding court onstage and off throughout his career, the family discusses the impact of what Yara’s mother Keri calls Prince’s “creative abundance.”
“You’ve taken the baton and taken it to another level,” Afshin tells Yara. Support from high places may just be part of her routine. Next year, she starts at Harvard University, thanks in part to a recommendation letter from Michelle Obama.
Yara, Keri, and Afshin sat down with TIME to discuss their fondest memories of Prince and lessons in artistry from the Purple One....

In 2004, Prince and @beyonce opened the GRAMMY Awards with a show-stopping medley of each of their hits, from "Purple Rain" and "Baby I'm a Star" to "Crazy In Love" and "Let's Go Crazy." •• “Walking into rehearsals, I was just so overwhelmed and nervous and star-struck,” she recalled in an interview with Giant in 2012. By the end of a week of rehearsals, however, she said performing alongside him “was like second nature.” •• Prince was eager to learn more about the young artist who was just beginning to establish herself as a solo performer after finding success with Destiny’s Child. “She’s so very talented,” he told Rolling Stone. •• Looking back on their GRAMMY collaboration, one memory in particular stands out for Beyoncé: the off-the-cuff comment that Prince slipped into the end of their action-packed performance. •• Prince’s timing was genius and his sense of humor, spontaneous and unexpected,” she wrote in the forward for Afshin Shahidi’s photo book Prince: A Private View. “We did talk about making a face, but when he blurted out, ‘Don’t hate us ’cause we fab,’ it took everything I had to keep my composure.” •• #grammys #repost from @prince https://www.instagram.com/p/B7y1EFAlkkf/?igshid=1lxjtzgnxw1og

Synopsis : in format E-PUB Prince: A Private View [PDF] Download
Featuring a foreword by Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.Afshin Shahidi met Prince in 1993 and soon became his cinematographer and later one of the only people allowed to photograph him. He collaborated with Prince longer than any other photographer. Afshin was the only photographer allowed to shoot the legendary 3121 private parties in Los Angeles that became the most sought after invitations in Hollywood; some of those photos are included in this book.Prince: A Private View compiles photographer Afshin Shahidi’s work into a journey through Prince's extraordinary life. With never-before-seen photos, it is the ultimate collection of shots of Prince. Brief, but complete and rich, stories about Shahidi and Prince’s collaboration and time together are alternately incisive, personal, and even funny.

Circulating images from books, released or unreleased, is copyright infringement. It happened with Steve Parke’s book, it happened with Mayte’s book, and it’s happening with Afshin’s book that comes out next week. In addition to being illegal, it’s a crappy thing to do, and the authors DO care when their work is leaked and circulated online without their permission (and usually without credit).
If you’re bummed you won’t be able to see all the amazing One Night Alone era photos or get a peak into 3121 parties from Afshin’s book, or you’re a die hard Rave-era fan and desperate for more stories of that time from Steve Parke, fear not, there is a way you can see them all - BUY THE BOOKS! I know, it’s a crazy concept, but that’s how it works! Prince himself shouted it from the rooftops pretty much his entire career - not everything can or should be available online for free, the best we can do is support artists by paying them fairly for their work.
It’s pretty easy to click the reblog button especially when it’s a new, exciting photo and we’re all guilty of it (myself included), but the very least you can do is try to avoid circulating a photo or story if you know it is leaked from a book, and certainly don’t circulate photos or stories from books yourself. The best we can do is support these artists by buying legitimate copies of their works and respecting copyrights.

Dig, If You Will, Some Never-Before-Seen Pictures Of Prince In 'A Private View'
Afshin Shahidi misses Prince.
"Nothing seemed impossible, everything was possible for him," he says. "And that's just the way he lived his life and the way he communicated and wanted us to live our life."
The Iranian-born Shahidi grew up in Minneapolis and met Prince in 1993 when he got a call to come to work on a music video shoot as a film loader. Shahidi didn't know how to load film. But, it was for Prince(!) so like a true fan, he jumped at the opportunity to bask in the royal purple glow, and decided to sort out the film loading stuff on the fly.
That was the start of a journey that led to Shahidi becoming Prince's personal photographer, a story he recounts, among others, in his recently released book, Prince: A Private View.

Afshin Shahidi peppers his new photo book with accounts of dreams he's had — dreams involving Prince. It's not surprising that Prince would appear in some of Shahidi's dreams, since the photographer spent a lot of time with the music icon for two decades. Shahidi became witness to some unforgettable moments backstage, in the studio, and on the road.
It's apt that the book is titled Prince: A Private View, since not only do the photos represent Prince in a number of quiet settings, they're accompanied by Shahidi's stories about how they were taken. We learn about how playful Prince was, how he would happily collaborate with Shahidi on shots like a back-seat flip-phone conversation, a pose in an empty gear truck, and a quick snap walking down a hallway. "I asked if he wouldn't mind walking down the hall again," writes Shahidi. "He chuckled and said, 'You know I don't do anything twice!'"
