Development security in a narrow sense emphasizes that "shift left" and "shift right" cover all phases of software development life cycle requirements, design, testing, deployment and operation. As one of the mainstream approaches to developing security, develops stands for Development, Security, and Operations, and is the practice of integrating security into continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment pipelines.
But Develops isn't just about "plugging" security into development and operations. In fact, develops has become an engineering culture, an automated platform design method, the goal is to integrate security into the entire IT life cycle, become the security cornerstone of agile enterprises, promote the revolutionary transformation of IT culture and network security, and help Creating sustainable competitive advantages for enterprises is one of the elements of digital transformation.
Therefore, the fundamental purpose of security development is not to "move security left or right", but to deliver high-quality (safe) software end-to-end, and to achieve "business agility" on this basis, which means developing secure technology providers We also need to have "agile thinking" to match the agile needs of enterprise customers.
Develop safe access to deep water
In recent years, there have been intensive outbreaks of major security incidents in development security and software supply chains, such as Log4j vulnerabilities, SolarWinds, Kaseya, and Go anywhere software supply chain attacks, "Pendulous Malware Gate", nm. open-source package poisoning incidents...all of which have extensive impact and huge losses, and even a major event that shakes the global network security industry structure.
Facts have proved countless times that only relying on traditional passive security methods can no longer avoid major business interruptions and huge losses caused by software supply chain attacks. Active and collaborative network security methods (such as Develops, ASPM, CNAPP) are gaining more and more attention. Attention and attention.
At the same time, with the deepening of "security shift to the left", enterprise development security has entered the deep water area, DevOps is no longer limited to the development and operation departments, and enterprises are paying more and more attention to the full lifecycle management of end-to-end delivery of business value, agile Development is being integrated into the core business processes of agile business and the agile enterprise.

Graphic design, also known as visual communication design, uses "vision" as a way of communication and expression, creating and combining symbols, pictures and text in various ways, so as to make ideas or messages convey visual performance. A graphic designer may use expertise in typography, visual arts, page layout, computer software, and more to achieve the goals of a creative project. Graphic design can generally refer to the process of making (designing) and the final finished work.
Common uses of graphic design include identity (logos and branding), publications (magazines, newspapers and books), print advertising, posters, billboards, website graphic elements, signs and product packaging. For example, product packaging may include logos or other artwork, formatted text and pure design elements such as consistent imagery, shape, size and color. Composition is one of the most important properties of graphic design, especially when a product uses pre-existing materials or a fusion of multiple elements.
Design is an artistic creative activity based on a commercial environment that is different from art by an individual designer or a design group. Design is a job or a profession, and a modeling activity with aesthetics, use, and commemorative functions. Design is based on business and the public, and serves them, thereby generating commercial value and artistic value, which is different from the scope of individual or partial group appreciation of art.
Graphic design is the art of communication, stylization and problem solving through words and images. Graphic design is often mistaken for visual communication or communication design due to overlapping knowledge and skills. Graphic design uses many different methods to create and combine words, symbols and images to generate visual ideas and messages. Graphic designers may use typography and layout techniques to make product designs achieve the desired effect.
word origin
The term graphic design comes from the English "graphic". Before the formation of modern graphic design, this term generally refers to various graphic art forms formed by printing. Therefore, the term was used together with "art" at that time, collectively referred to as "Graphic design". The term "plane" at that time meant not only that the work was two-dimensional and flat, but also that it was mass-produced, which differentiated it from individual works of art. The word "design" is translated from the word "design" in Japanese with Chinese characters. When translating the word "design" in Japanese, in addition to the word "design", words composed of Chinese characters such as "idea craftsman", "pattern", "constitution", "shape" and so on were used to express "design". So, when we understand what "design" is, we can first explain these words: the English design comes from the Latin de-snare, which means "to mark". In the 16th century, the Italian word design began to have the meaning of today's design. Later, through the intermediary of French, it was quoted in English and became the design in today's English.
Especially in the courses of Western art history and the Royal Academy of Art Education, since the Renaissance, it has gradually formed the professional skills of architecture, combined with the inheritance of professional skills of painting and sculpture. The three are collectively called plastic arts. collectively referred to as design. From this perspective, it is relatively easy for us to understand the definition and explanation of "design is a shaping activity or construction activity with aesthetic feeling, use and commemorative functions". However, no matter how the distinction is made, whether it is pure fine arts, handicrafts, architecture, or design, they must meet the conditions of "having aesthetic experience, use function, and commemorative function

CRA-designed MEET Digital Arts Center Opens in Milan
CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota unveil MEET – Milan’s center for digital culture and creative technology. Occupying a newly renovated historic palazzo, the building revolves around a 15-meter-high vertical plaza. The design investigates how physical space can foster serendipity and unexpected connections between people in a digital world. MEET will open to the public on October 31st, 2020.
October 28, 2020 – CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota have designed MEET – Milan’s center for digital culture and creative technology, which will open to the public on October 31st, 2020. The project occupies a historic palazzo, known for decades as one of the great symbols of cultural life in the city, which has been fully renovated in the last two years with the support of Fondazione Cariplo. At its core, there is a wide vertical public space illuminated by Artemide- including a 15-meter-high habitable stairwell – which can seamlessly turn from theater to workspace to meeting area, and serves as the focal point for all the center’s daily activities and events.
With the MEET project, CRA aims to investigate the meaning of physical space in an increasingly digitized world. It argues that architecture should foster unexpected encounters between people, precisely those that are missing in the digital realm. The design of MEET strives to achieve this aim through the hybridization of functions – that is, the possibility for any space to simultaneously host different activities. Such a design approach is best expressed by the central vertical plaza, but it extends throughout the center, to multiple rooms for exhibitions, talks, and performances.
“What is the role of physical space in a digital world? Today, we continue to live and work in pandemic-induced isolation where almost anything can be done online. At this time, it is vital to use architecture to produce serendipitous moments and help foster new connections – precisely those that rarely happen on the web,” says Carlo Ratti, founding partner of CRA and professor of the practice of Urban Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “One way to achieve this objective is to overcome any strict division of spatial functions. When every place can serve multiple purposes, it brings together multiple communities, facilitating the generation and circulation of new ideas.”
The vertical plaza at the core of the building embodies the project’s vision. All around a brightly-colored stairwell that moves in a zigzagging fashion, people can stop onto a series of asymmetric landings, enriched by a system of multimedia projections. These spaces can be used for talks, installations, art performances. Most importantly, they encourage chance encounters as people navigate through the building.
The MEET venue embeds digital technologies into physical space with an array of advanced projection systems and screens scattered across the building. This allows people to access MEET’s digital archive in unexpected ways. Drawing on the idea of “ubiquitous computing” put forward by scientist Mark Weiser, who argued that digital technology would become so pervasive that it will “recede into the background of our lives”, the project transforms architecture itself into a medium to share knowledge and culture.
MEET is hosted in a palatial building in the central Milanese neighborhood of Porta Venezia. The palace was built in the early 20th century and expanded by renowned Italian architect Gae Aulenti in the late 1990s. The MEET venue as renovated by CRA and Italo Rota extends over 1,500 square meters (16,000 square feet) across three levels. Among other functions, it accommodates a reconfigurable auditorium and movie theater operated in collaboration with the longstanding Cineteca Italiana, a café, and an immersive hall for digital installations.

India’s coronavirus death toll overtakes China’s: Live updates | News
India’s coronavirus death and case tolls have passed China’s, after the country recorded 175 new fatalities and 7,466 new cases.
The English Premier League and Italy’s Serie A are set to resume in June after a near-three month suspension over coronavirus fears.
China again reported no new cases as US President Donald Trump renewed attacks on Beijing over the coronavirus pandemic. He called the virus “a very bad gift from China”.
European governments moved to halt the use of anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 patients.
More than 5.8 million cases of coronavirus have been confirmed around the world, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Some 359,000 people have died, while more than 2.4 million have recovered.
Here are the latest updates:
Friday, May 29

05:41 GMT – South Korea plans to limit number of students returning to class
South Korea’s education ministry has announced plans to limit the number of students attending classes in schools in the Seoul metropolitan area amid a spike in new coronavirus infections.
The move comes just days after in-person classes resumed as part of a phased reopening of schools.
The Yonhap news agency quoted Park Baeg-beom, the vice education minister, as saying elementary and middle schools can only allow one-third of students to return to class while high schools can only take in two-thirds of their students.

05:05 GMT – Surge in cases as India prepares to lift lockdown
India has registered another record daily increase with 7,466 new coronavirus cases.
The Health Ministry’s new figures on Friday show India now has 165,799 cases with 4,706 deaths, which both now exceed China.
India’s two-month lockdown is set to end on Sunday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is expected to issue new guidelines this weekend, possibly extending the lockdown in worst-hit areas as it promotes economic activity.
04:49 GMT – Brazil reports record cases, 1,000 deaths in 24 hours
Brazil registered a new record in COVID-19 cases and more than 1,000 deaths in a 24-hour period, according to official figures out Thursday.
The South American country has the world’s second-highest number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases – 438,238 – after the US. According to Health Ministry data, 26,417 new cases were confirmed in a 24 hour-period ending late on Thursday.
In that same period, Brazil experienced its third-highest number of virus deaths since the start of the pandemic: 1,156. That brought the total death toll to 26,754, the sixth highest in the world.
04:23 GMT – Colombia extends national quarantine until July
Colombia has extended a nationwide quarantine to contain the spread of the coronavirus until July 1, while allowing more freedom of movement in some parts of the country.
Thousands of businesses have begun to reopen in the Andean country, with new safety protocols and reduced staff, as a lockdown in place since late March was due to lift at the end of May.
Under the government-mandated extension that business restart will continue. Hairdressers and barbers are among the businesses allowed to reopen, along with museums and libraries, at the discretion of local mayors.
However, other broad restrictions will remain in place. Public transit between municipalities and domestic flights will remain barred and in many areas people are required to stay indoors.
04:13 GMT – WHO to reconsider role of China-based ambassador
The World Health Organization is reviewing the position of its goodwill ambassador, James Chau, who was involved in the airing of an alleged forced confession on Chinese state television, according to the Financial Times.
Chau, a television anchor with China’s state broadcaster, presented a programme that in 2013 aired a confession by British businessman Peter Humphrey, who claims he was filmed under duress.
“The matter is taken seriously, as any such complaint would be. It is currently under internal review, and therefore cannot be commented on,” the WHO said in a statement to The Financial Times.
03:38 GMT – Algeria extends partial lockdown until June 13
Abdelaziz Djerad, the prime minister of Algeria, has extended a partial lockdown in the majority of the country’s provinces for another 15 days.

03:21 GMT – AIIB approves $750m loan for Philippines’ virus response
China-backed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has said it had approved a $750m loan to the Philippines to help the country cope with the coronavirus pandemic.
The project, which will be co-financed by the Asian Development Bank, is intended to increase testing capacity, support vulnerable sectors like agriculture, and provide emergency assistance to poor households, according to a statement.
02:07 GMT – South Korea reports 58 cases
South Korea reported 58 new cases of the coronavirus for May 28, all in the densely populated Seoul metropolitan area, as officials scrambled to stem transmissions linked to a massive e-commerce warehouse near the capital.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun called for officials to examine working conditions at warehouses of online shopping companies, which have seen orders surge during the pandemic, and other congested workplaces where infection risks may be high.
South Korea has reported 177 new COVID-19 cases over the past three days, a resurgence that threatens to erase some of its hard-won gains against the virus and worsen a massive shock to the country’s trade-dependent economy.
01:55 GMT – India: Under Lockdown
Social distancing and good hygiene are essential weapons in the fight against COVID-19.
But how can you maintain social distancing in one of the world’s largest slums? How can you wash your hands regularly when there is no running water? And what happens when millions of people who survive on meagre wages are suddenly without work and struggling to feed themselves?
Check out this investigation from 101 East on how India’s poor fared under the world’s biggest lockdown.
01:40 GMT – Cricket-Twenty20 World Cup schedule under ‘very high risk’
Cricket Australia boss Kevin Roberts has downplayed the prospect of the Twenty20 World Cup going ahead in 2020, saying the October-November schedule was under “very high risk” due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Obviously, we’ve been hopeful all along that it could be staged in October-November but you would have to say there is a very high risk about the prospect of that happening,” Roberts told reporters in a video call.
“In the event that doesn’t happen, there are potential windows in the February-March period, October-November the following year.”
00:46 GMT – China reports no new coronavirus cases
Health authorities in China have reported no new confirmed coronavirus cases in the mainland as of the end of May 28.
The National Health Commission, however, did confirm five new asymptomatic coronavirus cases on May 28, down from 23 a day earlier.

The Australian state of New South Wales has said the coronavirus pandemic could cost it as much 20 billion Australian dollars ($13.3bn) in lost revenues over the next four years, underscoring the urgency to revive the country’s stuttering economy.
Releasing its first estimate of the economic effect of coronavirus, NSW said budget deficits totalling 10-20 billion Australian dollars are expected over the next four years, a far cry from its previous estimate in December 2019 of an average budget surplus of 1.9 billion Australian dollars ($1.3bn) over four years.
“We are facing the type of economic challenge not seen in generations, perhaps not since people were hammering the last rivet into the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the 1930s,” said NSW state Treasurer Dominic Perrottet.
00:16 GMT – 14 million additional people could go hungry in Latin America
The World Food Programme has said some 14 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean could experience severe food insecurity this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It is vital and urgent that we provide food assistance to the growing number of vulnerable people in the region, as well as those who depend on informal work,” said Miguel Barreto, WFP regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean.
“We still have time to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic from becoming a hunger pandemic.”

A projector or picture projector is an optical gadget that extends a picture onto a surface, regularly a projection screen. Most projectors make a picture by focusing a light through a little straightforward focal point, yet some fresher kinds of projectors can project the picture straightforwardly, by utilizing lasers. A projector is a result gadget that takes pictures produced by a PC or Blu-beam player and recreate them by projection onto a screen, divider, or another surface. As a rule, the surface projected onto is enormous, level, and softly shaded. Projectors can convey either still (slides) or moving pictures. A projector essentially takes on the functional head of picture projection by which the projector acknowledges a video/picture input, processes it with the help of its inbuilt optical projection framework comprising of a focal point and optical source and tasks the upgraded yield on the Projection screen. A projector is a result gadget that is fit for associating with a PC, which might be an other choice for a screen or TV as far as showing pictures to an enormous number of individuals. LCD (fluid gem show) projectors utilize a light, mirror and crystals to show pictures on your screen. These frameworks are the most reasonable. DLP projectors: DDLP (Digital Light Processing) frameworks are the most recent light based projectors. They last longer, perform better and enjoy other added benefits. The LED projector is a gadget that utilizations light-emanating diodes to project video content on a level screen. It ensures top-class picture quality to clients. Additionally, it dispenses with the utilization of old incandescent lights for projecting substance.

Saudi Ramadan TV dramas invite scrutiny of Israel tiesRIYADH - Two Ramadan television dramas on a Saudi-controlled network have stirred controversy as they test public perceptions of quietly warming relations between the Gulf kingdom and Israel.Arab states including Saudi Arabia have no official diplomatic ties with Israel, but both sides are pursuing what one think tank calls a "tepid dance" to furtively build relations on the basis of shared animosity towards Iran. Now, two taboo-busting series during the holy fasting month —- the peak television season —- have fuelled speculation that Riyadh is trying to openly normalise closer ties with the Jewish state.A young character in "Exit 7", which depicts the journey of a middle-class family through a rapidly modernising Saudi Arabia, raised eyebrows when he befriended an Israeli boy through an online video game.In another controversial scene, one of the Saudi characters justifies establishing trade ties with Israel, arguing that Palestinians are the real "enemy" for insulting the kingdom "day and night" despite decades of financial support.Another show called "Umm Haroun", or the mother of Haroun, portrays a Jewish community in a village in Kuwait during the 1940s.Social media imploded with scathing criticism of the shows, with multiple Twitter users saying their aim was to promote "normalisation with Israel".The shows are produced by the influential Arab satellite network MBC, effectively under Saudi government control after its founder —- media mogul Waleed al-Ibrahim —- was detained with other elite businessmen at Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton hotel in a 2017 anti-corruption campaign. They stand in contrast to "The End", a popular Egyptian sci-fi drama that provoked fury in Israel after it predicted the collapse of the Jewish state.MBC said its shows were among the most popular during Ramadan, garnering top ratings."The Middle East has been stereotyped for decades as a region of fear, bloodshed, hatred, extremism," MBC spokesman Mazen Hayek told AFP."The shows have sought to project another image of the region that embodies hope, tolerance, inter-religious dialogue. The accusation of 'normalisation' is a bit outdated in the context of globalisation and hyper connectivity."- 'Gauging tool' -Observers, however, say the shows may be an attempt to normalise the debate on normalisation."These shows are useful for the Saudi state to understand where people stand on Israel and Palestine," said Aziz Alghashian, a lecturer at Essex University specialising in the kingdom's foreign policy towards Israel."These shows function as a gauging tool and feel out peoples' reactions."This is hardly the first such attempt.Earlier this year, the kingdom announced the screening of a Holocaust-themed film for the first time at a movie festival, before it was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.Multiple Saudi media columnists have shrugged off the MBC controversy, reiterating the kingdom's official stance that a settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a precondition for normalising ties. But relations appear to be warming regardless, in a shift spearheaded by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The cooperation saw Riyadh welcome US President Donald Trump's Middle East peace plan –- skewed in favour of Israel –- even as many others in the Arab world rejected it.Saudi Arabia quietly opened its airspace in 2018 for the first time for an Israel-bound passenger plane.Other Gulf states appear to be adopting a similar approach, with Oman hosting Netanyahu in October 2018 in the first visit of its kind in more than two decades. The United Arab Emirates flew its first publicly announced flight to Israel on Tuesday when Etihad Airways transported medical supplies to Palestinians.- 'Revolutionary moment' -A surge in tensions between Tehran and Riyadh and Saudi attempts to attract foreign investment to fund its ambitious Vision 2030 economic reforms appear to be pushing the kingdom closer to Israel than ever."The Saudis recognise the important role that Israel plays in the region," said Marc Schneier, an American rabbi with close ties to the kingdom and the Gulf."Just a couple of years ago, (Prince) Khalid bin Salman told me that the kingdom knows that Israel is an integral part of their achieving their 2030 economic plan. That is a major statement and really shows the warming of the ties," Schneier told AFP.Saudi authorities did not respond to a request for comment and an interview with Prince Khalid, the younger brother of the crown prince. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has pursued a bold outreach to Jewish figures, but the kingdom appears wary of a public backlash. In February, the Saudi king hosted a Jerusalem-based rabbi in Riyadh for the first time in modern history.Israeli media published a photograph of rabbi David Rosen with Saudi King Salman, hailing it as a "revolutionary moment".But the official Saudi Press Agency omitted Rosen's name from its dispatch and the photograph published on its website cropped out the rabbi."This is a region of the world where change like this takes time," said Schneier."We are seeing evolutionary signs of a warming, but it may take longer before we see more dramatic diplomatic moves."

‘Warhol’ Review: Nothing Like the Real Thing
‘I want to be as famous as the Queen of England,’ Andy Warhol once said.
By Dominic Green April 17, 2020 11:16 am
WARHOL By Blake Gopnik Ecco, 961 pages, $45
‘As genuine as a fingerprint,” said the caption to Andy Warhol’s photo in his high school yearbook. The style of a Warhol screen print is as unique as a fingerprint, but a genuine Warhol was so easily faked that Warhol had assistants do the work for him. Mass production and media smarts made Warhol the most famous of all American artists—not bad going for an artist who, as Blake Gopnik admits in his detailed, enthusiastic and absorbing biography, “never had the innate talent for realistic drawing that even many minor artists have.”
Fame is the right measure of his achievement, but fame was not his only spur. There was money, too, and plenty of drugs, not forgetting elaborate choreographies of gay sex that Warhol, with factory-like efficiency, combined with his photographic hobbies. Today Warhol stands proud in the public’s estimation. The art world revels in its elitism, but a Warhol, as the English put it, does exactly what it says on the tin. Campbell’s Soup, Elizabeth Taylor, Chairman Mao and Marilyn Monroe all look genuinely like themselves, and the fingerprint of Andy Warhol seems, somehow, to be on them all.
“I like to watch,” says Chance the Gardener in the film “Being There,” Hal Ashby’s meditation on the credulity of the rich and powerful. Warhol played the fool as only an intelligent observer can. His early 1960s transformation from intellectual graphic designer to gum-chewing Pop star was the most successful case of dumbing up since Marcel Duchamp’s realization of the secondary value of bathroom fittings.
Warhol’s triumph was a belated commercial victory for the pre-1939 European avant-garde: Critics called early American Pop Art “neo-Dada.” We live in Andy Warhol’s world of endless lurid images, each framed in irony. This is Jeff Koons’s good fortune, if not always ours.
He was born Andrew Warhola in 1928 in what Mr. Gopnik calls a “grim little flat” in Pittsburgh’s Soho neighborhood. His parents Andrej, a laborer, and Julia, a cleaner, had immigrated from what was then called Ruthenia and is now eastern Slovakia; Uniates, Slavic Catholics following the Greek rite, they were a minority within Pittsburgh’s “Slav” minority. Andrej was absent for long periods and died from complications of tuberculosis when Warhol was 13. Julia cooked Ruthenian food—in the 1930s, tinned soup was still a luxury—and encouraged Andy and his two older brothers to draw by copying from magazine illustrations.
How did the artist whose “notable achievements,” according to Mr. Gopnik, include rejecting a “signature touch” acquire his monumental blankness? Mr. Gopnik, an art critic (formerly for the Washington Post), wonders if Warhol’s Ruthenian background made his family “hyphenated Americans” with “nothing to put before their hyphen.” Did the Warholian recipe of low emotional affect and highcamp impact emerge as his shield and sword against a homophobic society? Or was it a childhood bout of Sydenham’s chorea, the disease then known as St. Vitus’s Dance? The illness’ immediate effect was that the 11-year-old Warhol watched Disney shorts over and over on a projector in a sickroom whose walls were adorned with shots of movie stars. Longer-term effects included blotchy skin, shaky hands and, Mr. Gopnik suggests, the repetitions of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Mr. Gopnik expertly traces Warhol’s technical and intellectual roots to his studies in painting and illustration at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Institute of Technology: the paintings of Stuart Davis, whose deceptively bland depiction of consumer products made him Warhol’s “one true avatar” in American art; the “hot new art of silk-screen printing”; and the Bauhaus notion that the studio should be a factory and art an “indictment of materialistic forces.”
The beatnik “André” made a virtue of his “comically awkward” sketching technique by turning his lack of traditional “hand” into an impersonal “efficiency,” as adaptable to commercial design as to the avant-garde gallery. In 1949 he took an overnight Greyhound to New York City and launched his “secret weapon,” the “blotted line” lifted from his hero Ben Shahn. A hardworking “bashful elf” with a “cold, calculating heart,” Warhol quickly built a reputation as “a cheaper Ben Shahn,” without Shahn’s “taint of far-left politics.” He drew for Condé Nast’s Glamour magazine and the Girl Scouts’ American Girl, and produced covers for highbrow LPs and books published by the literary imprint New Directions.
By 1960 Warhol had gotten ahead in advertising. He owned a house on the Upper East Side, and his mother was living in the garden apartment. He had repaired his appearance with skin creams, a nose job and a wig. He had worked and networked, and befriended Truman Capote. He had exhibited in small galleries too, but, Mr. Gopnik writes, his work remained known only to “the tiniest circle of uptown gays” and his income as a designer was declining as magazines turned to color photographs. His projects at the time included designing a bookplate for Audrey Hepburn and drawing the feet of minor celebrities.
The Abstract Expressionists had shown there was money in avant-garde art. Contemporaries like Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg were already reworking American icons. Warhol had an adman’s eye for the empty vessels of commercial imagery. “I want to be as famous as the Queen of England,” he told the uptown photographer and socialite Frederick Eberstadt. For the second act of his life, Warhol exchanged Brooks Brothers suits and season tickets to the Metropolitan Opera for jeans and pop radio. He experimented with urinating on his canvases, but inspiration lay closer at hand, in the designer’s world of mass-produced images.
“You’ve got to find something that’s recognizable to almost everybody,” the dealer and decorator Muriel Latow advised. “Something like a can of Campbell’s Soup.” Warhol described the soup-can sequence of 1961 as a “synthesis of nothingness,” but the power of his early images derives from their synthesis of depths and shallows. Isolated and enlarged, their colors inflamed, the commonplaces of commerce assume the scale and resonance of cult icons.
Warhol’s tins, Brillo Boxes and famous faces were, Mr. Gopnik suggests, not just a camp “Dada reply” to the machismo and existential angst of the Abstract Expressionists. Warhol fed the directness of commercial photography through the techniques of tradition, “meticulously hand-painting” his cans. He pretended to “cut all ties to craft and tradition,” but was the latest in the “craft obsessed” line of trompe l’oeil painters, curators of uncanny American reality like John Haberle.
By 1965 his Soup Cans, Marilyns, dollar bills and Jackie Kennedys had won Warhol an entry in Who’s Who—he claimed to descend from the von Warhols of Cleveland—and the keys to the Silver Factory on 47th Street, where he produced art, films and the early shows of Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground. Warhol, who fantasized that he was the “keeper of a male brothel,” ran a dark kingdom of “heavy drug use, sexual madness and violence.” Applying the theory of the “found object” to the “found person,” he collected “oddballs and freaks,” dubbed them “superstars,” exploited them in tediously obscene films, then ditched them into addiction and early death. In 1968 a thwarted hanger-on, Valerie Solanas, shot him. His life was saved by a doctor who opened his chest and manually massaged his heart.
The reborn Warhol dumped his old accomplices and devoted himself to “Business Art.” In the 1970s, instead of observing and reflecting the surfaces of consumption and celebrity as an outsider, he came to resemble his earlier image of Elizabeth Taylor, the famous person as “perfectly fungible commodity.” His last two decades are a catalog of vacuous screen-printing and joyless corruption, with Warhol proliferating inferior copies of his now-haggard trademarks: Interview magazine, which he founded and which foundered amid celebrity back-rubs; portraits of Chairman Mao and Mick Jagger; groveling to Imelda Marcos and the Shah of Iran; changing his style for “people portraits” of the merely rich; and daubing bodily fluids onto the canvas in a succession of ever-sillier wigs.
“You’re a killer of art, you’re a killer of beauty, and you’re even a killer of laughter,” Willem de Kooning raged at Warhol at a party in the 1960s. Warhol did make several killings. Mr. Gopnik calls them “true, important achievements,” but they now look more important than true. In the early ’60s, Warhol briefly balanced commerce and the avant-garde, photography and paint. Fame turned him into the real thing, a genuine fake. Business Art “reduced all of Warhol’s works to their lowest common denominator as merchandise,” Mr. Gopnik admits. Warhol descended with them, as the court pornographer of celebrity culture. In 1987 he died rich and lonely, at 58, from a heart attack after gall bladder surgery.
Mr. Gopnik compares Warhol’s hunt for lucrative “pet portraits in Kuwait” to Goya’s pursuit of commissions from Bourbon aristocrats, and likens Warhol to Gainsborough, who complained of “the People with their damn’d Faces” and wished he could paint landscapes. But Warhol’s idea of a “landscape,” as Mr. Gopnik indicates with laudable if not impressive detail, was “crotch shots of a porn star.” Placing Warhol with Picasso on “the top peak of Parnassus, beside Michelangelo and Rembrandt and their fellow geniuses” perhaps overrates an artist who couldn’t draw. Warhol’s real peers were the movie stars he loved: larger than life in image, but better at expressing other people’s ideas than contriving their own.

Bangkok to Host Second Asia Destination Film Forum on 30 January 2020
Tumblr media
Bangkok will host the second Asia Destination Film Forum on 30 January 2020. The event, co-chaired by H.E. Mr. Itthipol Khunpluem, Thailand’s Minister of Culture, and Dr. Sorajak Kasemsuwan, Secretary General of the National Federation of Motion Pictures and Contents Association, will take place at Quaint Bangkok. First launched at the 2018 Mekong Tourism Forum in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, by the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (MTCO), the forum is designed to showcase and recognize films that promote destinations and sustainability, through the power of visual storytelling. The forum will consist of sessions held by Nick Ray from Hanuman Films, Joe Cummings, editor at large of Bangkok 101, Fah Daengdej, Host of The Passion on Nation TV 22, and others, exploring how consumers are inspired to visit destinations by visual storytelling from movies to user-generated videos, how tourism boards can leverage films, how businesses can benefit from visual storytelling, and how it can drive sustainability.
Tumblr media
In addition to sessions and case studies by Tom Waller, producer of “The Cave” (Thailand), and by Ekachai Uekrongtham, executive producer of the Netflix series “The Stranded” (Thailand), there will be case studies by the Singapore Tourism Board, Busan City Tourism Organization, as well as the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Winner of Best Feature Film at the 2019 San Diego International Film Festival “The Steed” (Mongolia), as well as Hanuman Films’ award-winning “The Last Reel” (Cambodia) will screen during the event. In addition, films submitted to the Thailand Film Festival, in collaboration with the Thailand Film Office of the Department of Tourism, and the Mekong Mini Movie Festival, in partnership with MTCO, will be shown during the forum. In the evening, the 2020 Asia Destination Film Awards, as well as the Mekong Mini Movie Festival Awards, will be presented, followed by a Mongolia BBQ Film Festival night with a Mongolian celebrity BBQ chef and traditional cultural performances hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism Mongolia. Jens Thraenhart, Executive Director of MTCO and founder of the Destination Film Forum and Awards, said, “Today, video is one of the most powerful mediums when promoting a destination. It has the chance to awaken the wanderlust in the viewer by showing the essence and uniqueness of a place in just a few short moments. However, the power of inspiring people via film goes beyond promoting destinations; it can also drive change and responsible travel behavior, striving to emphasize tourism that is sustainable, responsible, environmentally conscious, and bringing benefits to local communities. In partnership with WWF and Khiri Travel, the Mekong Mini Movie Festival is creating awareness of sustainable tourism and conservation, focusing on the festival’s mascot, the endangered Mekong Dolphin.” A Destination Film Forum networking happy hour with film previews will take place at the popular Spectrum Lounge & Bar at the Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit at 17:30 on 29 January. Oman’s Retail Sector in Transition Mode
Retail sales across four Gulf countries – Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are projected to increase by more than $24 billion over the next five years, with Oman’s retail industry expected to rise 9.3 per cent during that period, according to global research firm Euromonitor International.
Oman’s retail industry to rise to $11.3 billion by 2023
Research from the company indicates that Oman’s retail industry was worth $10.3 billion in 2018 and is forecast to steadily rise to $11.3 billion by 2023. While store-based retail is expected to continue to dominate, with it currently accounting for $10 billion of the overall market in Oman, non-store retail, including online shopping, is expected to grow by 68 per cent from 2018 to 2023.
Euromonitor’s research reveals that Oman is all set to capitalise on the rise in consumerism thanks to favourable demographics, a rise in population and a strong growth trajectory in tourism and per capita income.
A strong contributor to the growth of the sector is proactive initiatives being taken by the government in streamlining the retail infrastructure and strengthening the investment and tourism landscape.
Keeping up with this trend, the brick-and-mortar retailers are expected to gradually adopt the omnichannel business model to establish an intuitive and smart communication with consumers across online and offline platforms.
Larger contribution to Oman’s GDP
The accomplishments made by the retail sector in Oman are today, making their mark on the economic scene. Over the years from 2015 to 2017, the retail sector has contributed around eight per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), representing an annual contribution of over rial Omani two billion.
The optimistic view regarding this promising sector is built on facts and figures, as it is expected to achieve development of more than $300 billion in the GCC region by 2021. Experts in the sector expect it to develop in the Sultanate over the next three years to account for 10 per cent of the GDP, based on forecasts of growth of the tourism sector thanks to a widening network of airports. This means that Oman is poised to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
Shopping malls are being built across the country at a fast rhythm, as large construction cranes compete for dominance of the skyline of Oman. Although the long-term fundamentals remain strong, the retail market in Oman is presently under pressure due to economic slowdown.
The impact on the retail sector has been higher compared to its GCC counterparts. Weak consumer sentiments, on account of subsidy cuts, are the major factor behind the drastic decline in retail sales. Consumers are becoming cautious and focusing on buying essential items. Their spending power may further come under pressure, as the government plans to introduce taxes in 2019, especially value added tax (VAT).
Enhanced retail experience
Oman’s retail landscape is concentrated in the hands of standalone retail outlets and has several regional and international retailers. As consumers look for a wholesome shopping experience combined with entertainment, the retail market in the country is transforming to accommodate large leisure shopping complexes.
Supply of retail space has gained steam in the last few years, which saw the addition of large shopping centers like the Mall of Muscat, Al Araimi Boulevard, Avenues Mall, Oasis Mall, and Panorama Mall, among others. The organised malls and standalone retail outlets are largely concentrated in Muscat. There are many retail projects underway, including Palm Mall Muscat and some community centres.
Mall of Muscat
(Image: Mall of Muscat)
The Mall of Muscat in Ma’abela was inaugurated in April 2019. It boasts of the region’s largest aquarium spread over 8,000 square metres.
The Oman Aquarium has 92 acrylic panels with a total weight of 81 tonnes. It has many fascinating exhibits including a walk-through tunnel. Spread over three floors it features a demi-tunnel running through part of the main tank. The aquarium has over 30,000 marine creatures in addition to 1,000 types of fish.
Built by the Al Jarwani Group, Mall of Muscat has many attractions including a Novo Cinema with 14 screens and over 200 retail outlets. Another attraction is the Snow Park covering over 5,600 square metres on the third level. The Snow Park is expected to open in the latter part of 2019.

In December 2018, the Al Raid Group’s Al Araimi Boulevard, developed with an investment of over RO100 million, was officially inaugurated. Located in Al Khoud, the built up area of 187,000 square metres provides leasable space of 75,000 square metres and more than 210 stores ranging in area from 70-160 square metres.
It has a family entertainment centre of 6,000 square metres. Al Araimi Boulevard will have 10 cinema screens and a Carrefour hypermarket, which will occupy an area of 10,000 square metres. It will also be home to 20 casual dining restaurants with a food court that seats up to 1,200 people. There are 3,000 car parks available at the mall.
The mall also offers a variety of entertainment experiences, including a trampoline park, a virtual reality centre as well as the largest family entertainment centre in the Sultanate. The project will also allow young talented artists to showcase their work in a gallery, dedicated to hosting local and international artists.
Al Araimi Boulevard consists of two floors, providing spaces for water features, fountains and other unique features like green landscaped areas. It has the largest glass dome that allows daylight to enter without heat.
Enabling factors for retail spur
Increasing population and international tourist arrivals have been the vital driving forces of the retail market in Oman. A high composition of young and working-class has led to a shift in consumer preferences towards international foods and western products.
This is further supported by an increase in household spending power over the years on account of the economic diversification and government-mandated pay hikes for nationals.
The retail sector is attracting huge investments from major foreign retail chains, especially from neighbouring United Arab Emirates (UAE), as well as from home-grown businessmen.
This is considered as a vote of confidence in the growth of retail sector and the Sultanate’s economy, despite the ongoing economic slowdown in the aftermath of a fall in oil revenue. Major retail giants, including Majid Al Futtaim, Al Jarwani group (Palm Mall) and Lulu group, are all going ahead with their multi-million expansion plans as per their earlier plans. These groups are building malls, hypermarkets, and supermarkets not only in Muscat but also in several cities across the country.
It seems that the impact of a plunge in oil prices is not affecting the long-term investment plans of these retail majors. It is not far to seek the reasons for the firm investment decision.
The government has initiated major strategies to tide over the fiscal challenges, which is expected to prop up the Sultanate’s economic growth.
