Today marks the 18th death anniversary of Nadira, the iconic actress of Hindi cinema during the 1950s and 1960s (February 9, 2006).

Nadira, also known as Florence Ezekiel, was a dominant figure in the film industry during the 1950s and 1960s. Renowned for her roles in 'Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh,' she was one of the era's most sought-after actresses, portraying both princesses and vamps. Notably, she was perhaps the first Bollywood star to be driven in a Rolls-Royce.

She is fondly remembered for her outstanding performances in films like 'Shree 420' (1955), 'Pakeezah' (1972), and 'Julie' (1975), the latter earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Originating from Nagpada in south Mumbai, Nadira was a Baghdadi Jew who made a spectacular entry into Bollywood at the age of 19 with Mehboob Khan's 'Aan' (1950), starring opposite the legendary Dilip Kumar.

Her portrayal of the villainous Maya in Raj Kapoor's 'Shree 420', where she captivated audiences with the iconic club-dance number 'Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh,' remains unforgettable to countless fans.

Additionally, the song 'Ajeeb Daastan Hai Yeh,' featuring Nadira alongside Rajkumar and Meena Kumari in 'Dil Apna Preet Parayi,' continues to be a beloved classic.

After finding Tara in the midst of a suicide attempt, Maya reconciles with her childhood friend. Raj later catches the two lovers together, and sentences Jai to death. As tensions between Jai and Raj grow, Maya and Jai exchange wedding vows in private. Jai and Maya rekindle their passion and the two begin meeting in secret. In retaliation, Viki writes a letter to the Shah to rid the kingdom of Raj, who now taxes the poor for his own perverted pleasure. He insults Viki sexually and for being a hunchback. As Raj descends deeper into opium addition, sexual cruelty and debauchery, he becomes irresponsible with his duties as King. In the meantime, the threat of an invading Shah inches closer. Jai understands that his king is a dangerous man and he must keep his former relationship with Maya a secret, for their mutual safety. Jai then learns of Maya's new status as the favored concubine. Jai gets the King's favor, but is also warned that there will be dire consequences if he should ever defeat the King again. Soon after, Raj and Jai have a "friendly" wrestling competition, in which Jai wins. He dispatches his attendants to find Maya and she is delivered to the King as his new concubine. Raj, now the king, recognizes the visage as Maya's in one of Jai's sculptures. Rejected by her first real lover, Maya finds comfort with Rasa Devi, making the decision to learn the courtesan's art. Maya begins an intense romantic and sexual relationship with Jai that is abruptly halted when he fears he might not be able to work properly with Maya consuming his thoughts. Realizing she has nowhere to stay, Jai takes her to an older woman named Rasa Devi (Rekha), who is a teacher of the Kama Sutra, the ancient art of seduction and love making. He reveals that Maya has been the inspiration for his beautiful and highly erotic statues. Wandering on her own, she meets a young stone sculptor, Jai Kumar ( Ramon Tikaram) who works for Raj. When she refuses, he publicly brands her as a whore, and she is forced to leave her home. To save Maya's honor, Viki sends a marriage proposal for her. Despite this, Tara still yearns for a loving relationship with her indifferent husband. This angers and sexually frustrates Raj, who rapes his horrified bride, setting a tone of violence and humiliation for the marriage. During her wedding night, Tara, a sheltered virgin full of romantic dreams, is hesitant to consummate their relationship. As Tara is leaving home as a newly-wedded bride to Raj, Maya tells her that just as Maya wore the princess's used clothes all her life, Tara will now have something Maya has used. Viki is crushed that his childhood infatuation has slept with his future brother-in-law, but at first keeps the knowledge to himself, and the wedding rites are completed the next day.

Maya has her first sexual experience with Raj, but unknown to both, Tara's brother, Prince "Viki", hides and watches the two of them together. Maya decides to take revenge when she chances on Raj sleeping alone, before he has completed the marriage rites with Tara. Noticing this, Tara spits in Maya's face, sending her from the wedding in tears. When the prince comes to view his future wife, he is instantly infatuated with Maya instead. Tara is prepared to marry Prince Raj Singh ( Naveen Andrews), and Maya is forced into the role of the inferior servant at their wedding festival. As the girls approach marriageable age, Tara resents that Maya is a better classical dancer than she is, and that her parents and hunchback brother, Prince Bikram (aka "Viki") show affection for her servant. The two girls are best friends, but an undercurrent of jealousy and resentment is caused by Tara's haughtiness, symbolized by the fact that Maya is given Tara's hand-me-down clothes and never anything new to wear. Tara ( Sarita Choudhury) is an upper-caste princess while Maya ( Indira Varma) is her beautiful servant.

Set in 16th century India, this movie depicts the story of two girls who were raised together, though they came from different social classes.

Somewhere Chhichhore hits the main nerve of suicidal cases and sungs the bond of friendship.It also gives light moments to laugh.

Annirudh (Sushant Singh Rajput) is divorced with his wife Maya(Shraddha Kapoor),but both are trying to manage their life for their son Raghav.They get deeply shocked.Then Annirudh

decides to treat his son mentally.He narrates the failures and triumphs of his college life.His college life collects his friends Sexa (Varun Sharma),Acid (Naveen Polishetty),Derek (Tahir Raj Bhasin),Bevda (Saharsh Kumar),

Mummy (Tushar Pandey) and his wife Maya.

Nitesh Tiwari successfully created a 90's nostalgic feel through flash back.Infact 80% film runs in flashback and scenes of present disturbs the flow.Especially,the scenes of hospital have bit stretched.The film starts with the glimpse of 3 Idiots' suicide part then meets to Jo Jeeta Woh Hi Sikander or Student of the year like college among competition and romance.Yes,the resemblance in the story can not be intentionally,but what if audience compare this predictable screenplay.

The best think about Chhichhore is its depiction of friendship.In one of

instance from film Anni's (Annirudh

) friends come in hospital to see his son on just one call.They not come,but also stay to normalize his critical condition.

If we go with title Chhichhore we will see some vulgar and double meaning jokes.Varun Sharma as Sexa is show topper with fantastic comic timing.Tahir Raj impressed me again after played Shyam in Manto (2018).He played Derek with serious dark face.Sharash kumar as Bevada is too late to play a student.Kota factory fame Kundan Raj works as surprise.

Sushant is good with his charming face and still plays good cricket in film after Dhoni.Shraddha did better than Saaho.Here she holds a good role as college girl plus mother.However,two thinks are not convincing.First Shraddha's makeup doesn't insert her in a mother role.She is too pretty.Second,the relationship between Sushant and his son seems very cool,but in next scene he commits suicide.

Prateek Babbar playing negative from some of his last releases.He clashed alone with Sushant's group of friends and gives competition.

On music movie is not promising at all.Even background music don't work for audience to tell where movie will go.

Well,Chhichhore is a book full of values,lessons of life and meaning of failure.It high on many accounts.It's a family entertainer too.Youths can

share popcorns with their parents.This Friday bollywood gave a good watch.

CHHICHHORE is the story of ‘loser’ friends trying to become winners and learning some important lessons on the way. Annirudh Pathak aka Anni (Sushant Singh Rajput) is a middle-aged man residing in Mumbai with his son Raghav (Mohammad Samad) after divorcing his wife Maya (Shraddha Kapoor). Raghav is under immense pressure as he has just given the entrance exams for engineering. Both his parents were rankers when they gave the entrance examination. As a result, Raghav is feeling the pressure tremendously. Anni however is confident that he’ll make it. Finally, the result is out and sadly, Raghav fails to make the cut. Scared that he’ll be labelled a loser all his life, he attempts to commit suicide by jumping from a high rise. He survives but the doctor treating him, Dr Kasbekar (Shishir Sharma) makes it clear that the chances of him recovering are slim. Anni is obviously heartbroken and with no option in hand, he decides to adopt a novel method to ensure that Raghav gets the will to live. He starts narrating him his story as an engineering student in Mumbai’s National College of Technology. He’s allotted a room in Hostel no 4 aka H4, considered to be the residence of the ‘Losers’. At first, Anni is flabbergasted with the kind of characters in H4. However, Anni and others are still called ‘Losers’ and there’s a reason for it. The General Championship aka GC is a sports tournament that takes place annually in the college. The students of H4 always lose miserably and are the last among the ten hostels. Hence, the ‘Loser’ tag. Raggie (Prateik Babbar) from H3 is a champion who wants all the winning students from other hostels to be in his hostel so that H3 can win the GC. He invites Anni, since the latter is a basketball champion. But Anni refuses, thereby earning the wrath of Raggie. Anni and others from H4 decide to shed the tag of ‘Loser’ once and for all by winning the H4. However, the road to the trophy is full of hurdles. Cut to present-day. Raghav’s condition stops deteriorating after listening to the story of the ‘Losers’ but there’s no improvement either. What happens next, in the flashback as well as in the present day, forms the rest of the film.

South Asian Opera Singers

Opera singers who are from South Asia (Indian subcontinent) are incredibly rare, and in operas that are set in South Asia and have South Asian characters (Lakmé, set in India, or the British Raj, and Les pêcheurs de perles, set in Sri Lanka), those Indian characters are almost always played by white European opera singers. However, after digging deep, I managed to find some South Asian opera singers. Of course, this list isn’t very complete, so if anyone knows about anymore, please feel free to add on!

Sean Panikkar (Sri Lankan-American): He’s an operatic tenor who has worked with the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Fort Worth Opera, and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. He’s portrayed the characters of Rodolfo from Puccini’s La bohème, and Tybalt from Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. The above photo is of him as Nadir from Bizet’s Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers) with the Fort Worth Opera, and the above video is of his performance as Tamino from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) with the New Orleans Opera. He’s perhaps the first Sri Lankan tenor to play Nadir. 

Maya Kherani (Indian-American): She’s a coloratura soprano who played the role of Meera in the world premiere of Jack Perla’s River of Light with the Houston Grand Opera in 2014. Other roles include Marie from Donizetti’s La fille du régiment and Gilda from Verdi’s Rigoletto. She’s soon to star in the West Edge Opera’s production of Britomarte’s L’arbore di Diana. The above video is her recital performance of ‘Credete al mio dolore’ from Handel’s Alcina.

Kishani Jayasinghe (Sri Lankan-British): A Sri Lankan-British soprano from Colombo, she is the first South Asian soprano to sing as a soloist in the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and at Buckingham Palace, where sang at Prince Charles’ 60th birthday with the Royal Opera House, and has been awarded with the Grand Prix and Audience Prize in Marmade, France. She is also the first Sri Lankan soprano to play the role of priestess Leïla in Les pêcheurs de perles with the Nederlandse Reisopera in 2015. Other roles include Mimi from La bohème, Rusalka from Dvorak’s Rusalka, and Violetta from Verdi’s La traviata. The above video is her recital performance of the Jewel Song from Gounod’s Faust.

Nikhil Navkal (Indian-American): Hailing from Massachusetts, he is also one of the few South Asian tenors to portray Nadir in Les pêcheurs de perles, this time with Opera Australia. He has also portrayed the roles of Don Ramiro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Tebaldo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi. The above video is of him performing a Rossini quartet along with Karin Laine, Caroline Tye, and Kofi Hayford.

Alok Kumar (Indian-American): Another Indian tenor, he performed the role of Chyavana in the world premiere of Ravi Shankar’s opera Sukanya. He’s also performed the roles of the Duke of Mantua in Verdi’s Rigoletto with Palm Beach Opera, Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata with Baltimore Concert Opera, Don José in Bizet’s Carmen with Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, and Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth with the Opera Company of Middlebury. Unfortunately, I could not find any videos of his performances.

Danielle de Niese (Australian-American, Sri Lankan Burgher): A Sri Lankan Burgher lyric soprano, not only has she sung with the Metropolitan Opera and Covent Garden, but she’s sung in Ridley Scott’s Hannibal, won an Emmy Award at 16 years of age, and even performed with rapper LL Cool J. She is most famous for her role as Cleopatra in Handel’s Giulio Cesare at Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2005. Other roles include Donna Elvira from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Rosina from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, and Musetta from La bohème. Today marks the 13th death anniversary of Nadira, the very famous actress of Hindi cinema during 50's and 60's The "Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh" actress Nadira (Florence Ezekiel) reigned supreme in the 1950s and 1960s and was one of the busiest actresses of her time.She played princesses and vamps, and was supposedly the first Bollywood star to be chauffeured around in a Rolls-Royce. She is best remembered for her performance in films in the 1950s and 1960s such as Shree 420 (1955), Pakeezah (1972) and Julie (1975), which won her Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. A Baghdadi Jew hailing from Nagpada in south Mumbai - Nadira was all of 19 when she stormed her way into Bollywood with Mehboob Khan's "Aan" (1950) opposite the reigning tragedy king Dilip Kumar. Her role as the villainous Maya in Raj Kapoor's classic 'Shree 420' where she wooed Kapoor with the evergreen club-dance number "Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh" is etched in the minds of millions of matinee fans. The song "Ajeeb Daastan Hai Yeh" picturised on the trio of Nadira, Rajkumar and Meena Kumari in 'Dil Apna Preet Parayi' is another evergreen favourite.
