A MAGICAL SURREALIST REIMAGINES THE BIBLE – click top image to begin slideshow – by David D. Fowler & Aeon 999

MFF is delighted to mark this year's Easter holiday with the extraordinary work of graphic artist DIERDRE LUZWICK. Our gallery was drawn from two of her collections: The Surrealist Bible, and Christ-Kin. These works demonstrate her fascinating interpretation of biblical stories – frequently expanding upon their meanings, often in modern settings. They also display quirky and thought provoking details, well worth exploring.

Our musical and dramatic playlist was somewhat more difficult to assemble. But after much wrangling, we realized that this selection of eclectic videos mysteriously formed themselves into a cohesive journey through human tragedy and redemption. The creative culprits include NINA PALEY, who animated When The Fire Comes Down; PHIL OCHS, whose Crucifixion was his eulogy mourning the deaths of American heroes; HENRYK GÓRECKI, whose deeply moving Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs is presented as commentary on the Holocaust, and the 9/11 attacks.

LEONARD COHEN's Anthem provides a compassionate take on human suffering; and his hopeful poem, God Is Alive / Magic Is Afoot, offers uplift. The Easter story is magnificently represented by a fan-edited compressed version of FRANCO ZEFFIRELLI's masterpiece, Jesus Of Nazareth. We then move on to a cornucopia of great spiritual paintings, set to a soundtrack of choral gems – and end with a homage to Creation, featuring HANDEL's iconic Hallelujah.

The vocal soloists, in order of appearance, are as follows: Milton Estes; Susan Gritton; Phil Ochs; Zofia Kilanowicz; Perla Batalla & Julie Christensen; Beth Gibbons; and Buffy Sainte-Marie.
