The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, operated by the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-M), located at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, is one of the most ambitious neutrino observatories in the world. Behind this observatory is the IceCube Collaboration, an international group of 300 physicists from 59 institutions in 14 countries. Relying on a cubic kilometer of ice to shield from external interference, this observatory is dedicated to the search for neutrinos. These nearly massless subatomic particles are among the most abundant in the Universe and constantly pass through normal matter. By studying these particles, scientists hope to gain insight into some of the most violent astrophysical sources – such as supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, merging black holes and neutron stars, etc. The group of scientists tasked with advising the U.S. government on particle physics research is known as the Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5). In a recent draft report, “Pathways to Innovation and Discovery in Particle Physics,” the P5 team recommended a planned expansion of IceCube. This recommendation is one of several that define the future of astrophysics and particle physics research. The report also recommends support for a separate neutrino experiment based in Illinois called the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, along with multiple projects at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array, and the development of next-generation ground-based telescopes to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The P5 advisors include two UW–Madison faculty members, Tulika Bose and Kyle Cranmer, and UW–Madison physicists also hold leading roles in the projects listed above. A view of the IceCube Lab with a starry night sky showing the Milky Way and green auroras. Credit: Yuya Makino, IceCube/NSF Bose is an experimental particle physicist who works on the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the LHC. Her research is focused on the search for exotic particles, Dark Matter, and Standard Model measurements. Cranmer’s research is similarly focused on the search for exotic particles and physics beyond the Standard Model, which included the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Together with their P5 colleagues, the two spent much of the last year assessing the future of particle physics and recommending projects that would help advance the field. One of the chief concerns of the P5 panel is how the federal government could maximize the limited funding it allocates to particle physics research over the next decade. This is one of the main reasons for the recommended IceCube expansion, colloquially named ICECube-Gen2. As they indicate in their report, an upgrade to the current observatory would be a relatively cost-effective way to improve the scientific community’s ability to detect and analyze neutrinos: “IceCube-Gen2 also has a strong science case in multi-messenger astrophysics together with gravitational wave observatories… The South Pole, a unique site that enables the world-leading science of CMB-S4 and IceCube-Gen2, must be maintained as a premier site of science to allow continued US leadership in these areas.” “Using new technology and taking advantage of the brilliant ice that we can model with ever higher precision, IceCube-Gen2 can expand the detection volume by a factor of eight for a cost comparable to IceCube,” said Albrecht Karle, a UW–Madison physics professor who is leading the IceCube upgrade in a UW-M press release. In addition to supporting an IceCube expansion and other major experiments, the panel recommended an improved funding balance between projects of all sizes, a more aggressive research and development program that could lead to a next-generation particle accelerator, and broadening the nation’s advanced technology workforce. Bose indicated that she is particularly excited by the prospect of a new particle accelerator, which could potentially be located in the U.S. “I am excited by the bold long-term vision presented in the P5 report,” she said. “Such a collider would be an unparalleled global facility that will provide new insights into the mysteries of our quantum universe.” The P5 panel’s recommendations are now being reviewed by the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP), part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE), which is scheduled to meet on December 8th to discuss the recommendations. An online version of the P5 report can be found here on the DoE’s website, and a 2-page summary can be found on the HEPAP site here. 04.06.2023 - I've been out with my Dad this weekend and ended up in a secondhand bookshop (no one is surprised.) So, I've decided to fuel my growing Sir Walter Scott and Ursula K. Le Guin obsessions! Plus a chunk of a biography about my second favourite Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer.
Currently reading: Witches by Tracy Borman; The Metamorphoses by Ovid; The Farthest Shore by Ursula K. Le Guin (but mainly Witches because I'm starting to hate it and want it to be done, I'm going to reward myself by focusing on Le Guin when I'm done 😅)

The International (2009)
Action, Crime, Drama |
The International is a action thriller film directed by Tom Tykwer and written by Eric Warren Singer. Starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts, the film follows an Interpol agent and an American district attorney who jointly investigate corruption within the IBBC, a fictional merchant bank based in Luxembourg. It serves organized crime and corrupt governments as a banker and as an arms broker. The bank’s ruthless managers assassinate potential threats including their own employees.
Inspired by the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) scandal of the 1980s, the film raises concerns about how global finance affects international politics across the world. Production began in Berlin in September 2008, including the construction of a life-size replica of New York’s Guggenheim Museum for the film’s central shootout scene.
Louis Salinger, a British ex-Scotland Yard officer-turned Interpol detective, and Eleanor Whitman, an Assistant District Attorney from Manhattan, are investigating the International Bank of Business and Credit (IBBC), which funds activities such as money laundering, terrorism, arms trading, and the destabilization of governments. Salinger’s and Whitman’s investigation takes them from Berlin to Milan, where the IBBC assassinates Umberto Calvini, an arms manufacturer who is an Italian prime ministerial candidate. The bank’s assassin diverts suspicion to a local assassin with political connections, who is promptly killed by a corrupt policeman. Salinger and Whitman get a lead on the second assassin, but the corrupt policeman shows up again and orders them out of the country. At the airport they are able to check the security camera footage for clues on the whereabouts on the bank’s assassin, and follow a suspect to New York City.

Weekly Update - Monday, March 19, 2019
Promise - Passion - Perseverance
“Friends - they cherish one another’s hopes.  They are kind to one another’s dreams.”
Henry David Thoreau
Good Morning,
This certainly was an intense week of sports in Wallingford. From the hockey championship, which we owned, to girls basketball and boys swimming, our student athletes certainly represented us well. Personally, it was such a proud moment to see so many of our students excel outside the classroom. Also, seeing the student body and community support was incredible!  Thank you to our students, the coaches and everyone who made this past week one for the history books.  Even though not all games ended with championship titles, you are all champions to us!
Invention Convention
This past Tuesday night, Wallingford held its annual Invention Convention.  It was a wonderful night to see the creativity of over 100 inventors from our district.  I invite you to watch this video that Paul Bogush developed to share with everyone highlighting this amazing event.  I want to thank all of the staff who made this event so successful, especially Jacqueline Valentine.  The commitment and passion was evident all how well the inventions were.
Here is the list of winners!  Congratulations to everyone who participated.

Facility Study Update
As we shared this week, the next meeting will be held on Monday, April 1 at 6:30 pm in the Robert F. Parisi Town Hall Chambers. The discussion will be part of the normal Operations Committee meeting agenda. Again, the consultants plan to share updates on the two versions of option 3.
A survey will still be administered to all community members once the Board of Education determines its final choices. I will keep everyone informed following this meeting.
Budget Update
April 1 is also the date the Mayor usually shares his budget to the community. This year is getting more and more challenging with the state proposals and also insurance increases. We are still confident in our proposal, but our work certainly is not over.
Again, I will keep you posted as to next steps. We are still in the marathon that is the budget process.
Passion - Promise - Perseverance
As part of continued work with career readiness, Wallingford staff is working closely with many state, national, and international organizations to provide our students with opportunities to excel in meeting their post high school goals. The hard work of our CTE staff, curriculum coordinators, college and career specialists, and counselors is beginning to really pay off in amazing ways.
I wanted to share with you an upcoming program for high school students in our district. The Medical Careers and Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing pre-apprenticeship programs will be offered to students this coming school year.  The program in its entirety is a three semester program starting with job shadowing over the summer followed by a paid pre-apprenticeship.  The last semester concludes with interview and resume preparation culminating with real interviews for job after high school or for scholarships towards college.  Funded by an AT&T grant, this program will offer at least 30 students authentic experiences in the potential fields they see themselves in the future.  We are fortunate to have several partners signing up to be offer our students this wonderful experience.  If you know of any juniors who have completed the CNA program or are interested in engineering and advanced manufacturing, please have them look out for the upcoming application to participate in this program.
As a result of the many fantastic things going on in our district for students, Wallingford is going to be highlighted on an upcoming Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) episode devoted to career readiness. Over the next two weeks, staff and community members will be involved in this exciting event. I know some people may not be happy about this publicity or wonder why it is needed; however, these opportunities allow our district to increase partnerships and leverage relationships for more resources for our students outside of the town-funded budget. As you can imagine, that is very important. Even though our free/reduced lunch rate is now over 30%, many  large grants base in need are not accessible to us as they are to other districts with greater need. Therefore, these external partnerships are needed and by getting recognition for them, we will generate more interest in other areas for our students.
Again, I want to thank everyone for their hard work, passion and perseverance as we continue to keep our promise to achieve the Wallingford 100!
Make it a great week!
Sal

50cm:Twenty20 names Sho-Air as title sponsor
The Twenty20 women's programme has elevated the transport logistics firm Sho-Air to title sponsor for the season, helping to further the team's goals of preparing riders for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The new sponsorship deal allows the team to expand, bringing on two mountain bike racers, para-athletes and juniors, and allow riders to participate in gravel and off-road events while continuing to focus on delivering Olympic medals.
"I am grateful to Scott and the Sho-Air International brand for their continued support of the team," said General Manager Nicola Cranmer. "The program will be in its 15th year and we have accomplished many goals, the next two years are important for us as we build to Tokyo along side our firm commitment to supporting the growth of women riding, on the road, track, trail and living a healthy balanced lifestyle."
The team announced Californian Melanie Wong, 32, as a new addition to the team. Wong has been a fixture of the Nor-Cal racing scene, and led the Mike's Bikes team in 2018. The shop also supports the Sho-Air Twenty20 team with service course space and mechanical assistance.
"Watching Melanie lead the Mike's Bikes team the past few years really impressed me," Cranmer said.
Wong will continue to hold her professional career and race, mentoring riders both on the bike and off.

J.B. Clifford, The Teachings of the Plymouth Brethren on the Presidency of the Holy ghost and Imputed Righteousness, 1865
Page 4: If “the Church of England so disowns the sovereign guidance of the spirit of God” that, to be a member of that church is to “sanction a mutinous system:” (Christ the Centre, p. 13.) if her teaching, that “we are accounted righteous before God, only for the merit of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (Article XI.) is a grievous error, “utterly astray” from God’s truth; then it is time to examine our bulwarks and to look well to our very foundations, and if they rest on eternal truth to defend them to the last. But if they are false, if they are merely the wood, hay and stubble of fallible reformers, and built upon the yielding sand; then let them fall, and be burnt up before the scorching batters of the last born sect in christendom. And with them, let there be sweat away forever the writings of Cranmer, of Latimer, of Ridley, of Hooker: of Luther, of Calvin, of Melancthon: of Owen, of Baxter, of Manton and of Charnock: of Scott, of Henry, of Gill: of Whitfield, of Simeon, of Haldane and of Goode: let them all be burnt like the books at Ephesus: for if the Plymouth Brethren are right, all these great and holy men, with a host of others who have ever been regarded as bulwarks of truth, are fatally wrong; and have utterly failed to discover the doctrines which the Plymouth Brethren have just found out to be the essential marks of the true Church! There is such a thing as modesty. There is such a grace as humility. And there is a warning in the words of the Holy Ghost, “if any man thinketh that he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.” This ought at least to suggest the possibility of our views being erroneous, when they differ from those of men whom God has delighted to honor and to bless. Page 7: We see then, as the result of this investigation, that there were different orders of ministers in the church; there was the office of deacon, which was preparatory to that of presbyter; there was the office of elder, or presbyter, or priest, who was to preside or be bishop, or overseer over particular congregations or churches with the deacons; and there was the office of superior presbyter or bishop, who was the preside over the churches of a city or district, as Timothy did over Ephesus, and Titus over Crete; while the Apostle Paul had “the care over all these churches.” How then, in the face of such facts, can the Plymouth Brethren make the assertion, “We search in vain in the New Testament for any church government except the sovereign guidance of the Holy Ghost?” (Christ the Centre, p. 7.) Page 8: But now we are told that in the present day, by all the churches, except those of the Plymouth Brethren, “this presidency of the Holy Ghost is forgotten, and that a man fills his place. This disowning of the personal presence and sovereign guidance of God the Holy ghost is most sad in every way.” “God is disowned in the Assembly for guidance in worship.” (p. 9.) “When you meet for worship you do not submit to the Holy Ghost and allow Him to preside over the meeting, using whom He will.” (P. 24.) Page 9: Now, without entering upon a formal refutation of these assertions, it might be sufficient to ask, Have the Plymouth Brethren realized anything like this in their own churches? have they realized the harmony which the presidency of the Holy Ghost in person would ensure? Have they not rather been remarkable for their divisions, and strange doctrines, and excommunications of one another? Have not the Darbyites and the Newtonites violently separated? In which of these opposing sections are we to recognize the presidency of the Holy Ghost? have not these opposite parties charged one other with propagating heresy? and have not some of these heresies been recanted, or attempted to be explained away? Where, then, is the presidency of the Holy Ghost? Can the errors preached and taught be ascribed to Him without blasphemy? Can the contradictory assertions of the opposing sects both be “the sweet words of the Holy Ghost?” Page 11: But farther. It appears that certain women had been in the habit of speaking in their assemblies. They might be gifted women or not. But they no doubt imagined, and the church imagined, that they were prompted and guided by the Holy Ghost to speak in the Church: but the Apostle knew better, and therefore he commands them to keep quiet. “Let your women keep silence in the Churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak, but to be under silence, as saith also the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the Church.” You will observe that the Apostle speaks with all authority, and appeals to the law (v. 34) in support of what he commanded. So far from abdicating his authority in favor of these prophets and spiritual men and women, who possibly might think with the Plymouth Brethren, that they were under the guidance and presidency of the Holy Ghost, he says, “If any man think himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that that things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.” But still further, if the Holy Ghost presided in the assembled Church at Corinth, whence arose the carnal disputes and worldly contentions which prevailed when they met together. If the Apostle Paul had been presiding among them, he would have put them down at once. Page 12: The only answer to these difficulties which I can imagine is, that these Corinthians rejected the presidency of the Spirit, and that they were consequently not a true Church any more than the Church of England; (p. 13) but if this had been the case, the Apostle, according to the Plymouth Brethren, ought to have separated from them. He ought to have rebuked them for rejecting such presidency. But he is totally silent on the subject, and yet he acknowledges that they had the gift in an eminent degree, “ye come behind in no gift.” (1 Corinthians 1:7). And, so far from intimating that they were not a true Church, he addresses them in the following terms: “to the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints.” Page 14: The question to be investigated is the following: — Whether the righteousness which is imputed to the believer, consists of the obedience of Christ to the law; or consists of an act of God’s righteousness, in pronouncing on the condition of a believer, as God sees him. The Plymouth Brethren deny the former, and affirm the latter. Mr. Darby says, “the meaning of imputed righteousness is not a quantum of righteousness apart from the person, and afterwards reckoned to him — but the state or condition before God in which He sees him.” The precious doctrine for which I contend, is the very one which is denied by the Plymouth Brethren. I may state it in the following terms. The Lord Jesus Christ, by his obedience to the law, wrought out a spotless righteousness: and, because He was God as well as man, His fulfillment of the law is called “the righteousness of God.” This is the righteousness which I affirm to be imputed to the believer. It is, “a righteousness ready outside the sinner;” and by this righteousness, and by no other, is the sinner accounted righteous in the sight of God, and in the presence of the law. This is the doctrine denied by Mr. Darby and other Plymouth Brethren. He says, “Though a person is reckoned to be in a state which he is not de facto in, a quantum of righteousness, ready outside himself reckoned to him, is not the meaning of imputed righteousness.” … Again, he says, “It is one thing to make an atonement for sin, and another to have one’s neglected duty accomplished de facto by another. Besides, if done, it is human, legal righteousness, by whomsoever done.” …… I shall now endeavor to prove, in opposition to the Plymouth Brethren, the three following propositions: — 1.—That the righteousness of Christ consisted of his obedience to the law. 2.—That this righteousness is called, and is, the righteousness of God. 3.—That this is the righteousness which is imputed to believers.
