NEW DELHI: Xiaomi, the market leader in smartphone sales in India, Lenovo-Motorola and Lava are shutting their handset factories in various parts of India after state governments ordered lockdowns to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
Lenovo-Motorola will shut its smartphone and PC factories from Tuesday.
“Till 23rd March, the Puducherry and Chennai factories are operational,” Prashanth Mani, MD of Motorola Group, told ET.
Xiaomi’s four factories in Tamil Nadu and Noida will stop production from March 24. The Chinese smartphone maker has eight plants for smartphones, smart TVs and power banks, operated by contract manufacturer partners. “Each facility such as corporate office, warehouse, service centre, Mi Home, and manufacturing plant will abide by the lockdown orders,” a Xiaomi spokesperson said.
Xiaomi and Lenovo-Motorola did not say how long their plants would be closed.
“The lockdown can cause a fall of 40% in phone sales in the month of April. Also, if Samsung, which is the majority exporter of phones and parts, continues the shutdown for more than two weeks, exports can fall by 50%,” said Neil Shah, research director, Counterpoint Technology Market Research.
Local handset company Lava International has shut its manufacturing facility in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. “We have shut the factory between 22 March-25 March as per UP government’s directive,” a Lava spokesperson told ET.
According to company data, the plant has a manufacturing capacity of 3 million units per month, of which 2 million units are exported every year.
Samsung, Oppo and Vivo suspended production at their respective Noida and Greater Noida plants on March 22, following lockdown orders from the Uttar Pradesh government.
“As a measure to safeguard our employees and their families against Covid-19 and in compliance with directives from the government, we have decided to currently suspend our manufacturing operations and have asked employees at our sales, marketing and R&D offices across India to work from home,” a Samsung spokesperson said in a statement.

Periodically, almost once in five years since the early 1980s, the Reserve Bank appointed committees and working Groups to deliberate on and recommend the appropriate use of technology by banks give the circumstances and the need. These committees are as follows: -Rangarajan committee -1 in early 1980s. -Rangarajan committee -11 in late 1980s. -Saraf working group in early 1990s. -Vasudevan working group in late 1990s. -Barman working group in early 2000s.
Based on the recommendations of these committees and working groups, the Reserve Bank issued suitable guidelines for the banks. In the 1980s, usage of technology for the back office operations of the banks predominated the scene. It was in the form of accounting of transactions and collection of MIS. In the inter-bank payment systems, it was in the form of clearing and settlement using the MICR technology.
Two momentous decisions of the Reserve Bank in the 1990s changed the scenario for ever there are: a) The prescription of compulsory usage of technology in full measure by the new private sector banks as a precondition of the license and b) The establishment of an exclusive research institute for banking technology institute for development and Research in Banking Technology.
As the new private sector banks came on the scene as technology-savvy banks and offered several innovative products at the front office for the customers based on technology, the demonstration effect caught on the reset of the banks. Multi channel offerings like machine based (ATMs and pc-Banking), card based (credit/Debit/Smart cards), Communication based (Tele-Banking and Internet Banking) ushered in Anytime and Anywhere Banking by the banks in India. The IDRBT has been instrumental in establishing a safe and secure, state of the art communication backbone in the from of the Indian Financial NETwork (INFINET) as a closed user group exclusively for the banking and financial sector in India.

The Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime has been priced at Rs. 12,990 for the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage variant, and Rs. 14,990 for the 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage model. It will be available starting January 20, exclusively on Amazon.in, in tandem with the recently launched Galaxy A8+ (2018). There are some unique software features and preinstalled apps that could help the Galaxy On7 Prime compete with the likes of the Xiaomi Mi A1, Lenovo K8 Note, and Nokia 5. We spent some time with the Galaxy On7 Prime at its launch event, and here are our first impressions.

Before digging into the specifications, we have to talk about a new feature that Samsung has introduced for the first time in India. Called Samsung Mall, this new app is being pitched as an all-in-one shopping platform to help users find products across multiple e-commerce websites. Users can take a photo of a product, or choose one from their gallery, and the app will use image recognition to try to identify it. In our brief initial tests at Samsung’s launch event, it seemed that this feature is mostly a gimmick, because it did not work for the majority of objects we tried matching, and it is difficult to frame shots well. However, it did recognise some popular smartphones including a Google Pixel 2 and an iPhone 7 Plus, and like all machine learning algorithms, it could get better over time.
Moving on to the design of the Galaxy On7 Prime, this phone looks a lot like the previously launched Galaxy J7 Prime. It has the same metal unibody, which feels sturdy. It weighs 167 grams, which is decent enough considering the all-metal design, and is distributed evenly. The handset measures 151.7mm tall, 75mm wide, and 8mm thick.
On the front, it features a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) PLS TFT LCD screen with a regular 16:9 aspect ratio display. It has a 2.5D curved-edge glass that gives the phone a premium feel. The display, much like most other Samsung smartphones, offers good viewing angles, strong brightness, and good colour reproduction.
Below the display is a physical home button, with a capacitive key on either side – one for multitasking and the other for navigating back. The Home button houses the fingerprint sensor, and having it on the front is a rarity for Android smartphones these days. In our initial experience, the fingerprint sensor was fast, responsive, and mostly accurate. Above the display is the 13-megapixel front shooter with f/1.9 aperture. The front camera took natural images and did not unnecessarily use faux editing to “beautify” faces. Samsung has incorporated a new ‘Stickers’ feature that offers functionality similar to the stickers found in apps such as Instagram and Snapchat.
The metal back of the Galaxy On7 Prime also has a single 13-megapixel camera with an f/1.9 aperture and autofocus. Strangely, the autofocus on the camera seemed inconsistent and we struggled to take macro shots in our limited initial tests. Samsung has promised good low-light performance for both cameras, and while we were unable to test that at the launch event, we will examine this claim in detail in our full review.

The back of the smartphone has been kept fairly minimal, with only the camera, LED flash, and Samsung branding visible. The metal body offers a good grip.
The Galaxy On7 Prime features a loudspeaker and a power/ lock button on the right. On the left is a volume rocker, a compartment for SIM 1 (Nano), and a second compartment for SIM 2 (Nano) as well as a microSD card. The bottom of the device has a Micro-USB port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the primary microphone.
At the core of the Galaxy On7 Prime is a 64-bit octa-core Samsung Exynos 7870 SoC, with all eight cores clocked at 1.6GHz. The Exynos 7870 is the latest mid-range processor from Samsung and we will test its performance in our upcoming review. The smartphone comes in two variants – 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage. We had the variant with 4GB of RAM to examine at the launch event, and there was no significant lag or stutter.
Expectedly, the smartphone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat with the Samsung Experience 8.5 UI on top. There is no official word on the likelihood of an Android 8.0 Oreo Update, although we are optimistic since the Galaxy J7 Prime is expected to get a beta update soon.
Apart from the exclusive Samsung Mall feature, the Galaxy On7 Prime supports Samsung Pay Mini, which integrates with online wallets and UPI. We could not test this feature due to a lack of Internet connectivity at the launch event. The smartphone also has other Samsung software features including a one-handed mode, shortcuts for the camera app, multi-window and split screen multitasking, and Smart Alerts to let you know about missed calls and messages when you pick up the phone. Additionally, the Galaxy On7 Prime comes with Microsoft apps including Office and LinkedIn, as well as the usual Google apps such as GMail, YouTube, etc.
The Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime has a 3300mAh battery under the hood, which we will soon test for ourselves.
