Soccer Shooting Technique
Recently while at the NSCAA convention I met two British gentlemen and of course we began discussing the game of soccer. As we talked, one of my new British friends calmly stated that the bottom line to all of this is the following: When kids in England go out to play after school, they only kick the ball using their legs and feet. When Americans go out to play after school they usually play with their hands. Baseball, football and basketball have them throwing and catching the ball. Soccer Shooting Technique
American pre-youth have the opportunity to eliminate the toe-kick before age 5
He went on to make a point, which is true. “The culture of playing sports in the USA starts out very different for our kids here. It’s a cultural difference from the very start.”
His statements made me think of an idea regarding the positive role parents can play in youth soccer. It’s pretty simple actually and it uses a tried and traditional event in American family culture. I’m referring to the good old-fashioned, USA born, backyard family barbecue. This is our traditional event. Every spring, summer and sometimes into the fall, family members, including extended family, sit around the pool or yard relaxing while we slow cook our favorite recipes on the smoker. While the adults cook and socialize, the kids usual manage to pick up a game of either whiffle ball, basketball with a small kid basket or start throwing the foam football. Soccer Kicking Technique
In the kids’ minds, they are just out having fun in the yard. In actuality, the kids are playing, but they are also learning some of the basics of a sport. In whiffle ball they are tossing a ball like a pitch, while the batter is swings the whiffle bat trying to connect. The kids who are throwing the foam football are learning distance and catching using a softer material. Soccer Kicking Technique
To parents I would say don’t change anything from your barbecue except bring in a SoccerTee and a soccer ball. Watch the kids kick off the SoccerTee at 2 and 3 years-old and have fun. They’ll kick it again and again with the same exuberance from the very first kick. Just like the foam football being easier to catch and the whiffle ball being easier to hit, the kids using SoccerTee makes it easier for them to kick. They’re having fun while learning soccer skills.
The kids develop coordination and some muscle memory, which help sets the foundation for playing soccer. The results can become compounded over time by just playing in the backyard whether is a weekend family barbecue of after school with other kids on the street.
So, let’s take note from my futbol friends in England. Let’s have our kids play and practice with their feet, building skills and coordination just like they do with their hands.

How To Shoot A Soccer Ball Correctly
One thing that we, here at SoccerTee, put first and foremost is the need of all players to strive for developing skills before the desire to win. This is detrimental to the ability of the player as they grow in the competitive playing world.
Through this article, Development first, winning second. How some youth coaches stunt player growth, we see many pros and cons how we should coach our young players and grow them into ball players that are skill enticed and win due to their fundamentals.
One of the most tragic things we can do to young players is push them beyond their limits at young ages and force winning upon them therefore when they are of age when the competition becomes real and means something then they have already lost their interest. It needs to be known in the coaching realm and even among parents in this society and culture that at such young ages it is perfectly fine for your players to just enjoy getting as many touches on the ball as possible. It is perfectly fine to guide through mistakes rather then harp on them and make these young players feel like they have failed. It is also essential for young players to learn how to handle mistakes and failure in a mature, elegant way, because those things are evident to happen. How To Shoot A Soccer Ball Correctly
In this article, Mike Nicholson, repeats this many times and it is as true as the first time he said it, “We should be developing players to have the skills, attributes and decision-making skills to compete when they are older, much older, when it matters, not now”. How To Strike A Soccer Ball With Power And Accuracy
We cannot forget that our kids are kids. Why should we force them to grow up before their time? Why should they be deprived of a childhood filled with fun and enjoyment? We need to let them grow into their abilities and find their own identity and style of playing. As parents and coaches we are called to guide and provide wisdom and teachings, and let them learn along the way. And finally Nicholson said, “Essentially, I believe we should be encouraging kids to get as many touches of the ball as possible, and supporting them when they make mistakes. Mistakes are a necessary part of learning, and how we respond to those mistakes as a coach will be a huge factor in deciding what type of players we produce. If you want cautious, predictable players than tell them their every move and criticize errors. We need to be giving the kids of today the best chance of developing the skills that they will need when they are older, when winning will become more important.” How To Shoot With Your Laces

How To Kick A Soccer Ball Correctly
One Step at a Time
The idea is to take things one step at a time and slowly grow on each bit of information we teach our players
In a recent article on SoccerNation called, An Ocean Will Drown a Seed, there were points made that greatly align with our SoccerTee values. In this article, the author discusses how we as coaches cannot overwhelm our players with “oceans” of information for then we are just setting them up for more stress, anxiety, confusion, pressure, and failure. The idea is to take things one step at a time and slowly grow on each bit of information we teach our players. When we teach them one skill and then continue to grow on top of that, then you are letting them master one thing at a time and not forcing them to become an expert all at once. The area that we believe us as coaches and parents struggle with the most is that we have all this built-up knowledge that we so desperately want to share to these eager players so we want to give them all of it at once because we are excited. But we must remember that in doing so that is not helping these players, but really hurting them in the long run. When the SoccerTee was created, it was created out of frustration and the exhaustion of failure. So the SoccerTee was created to not only be a great teaching tool, but to teach players, coaches, and parents how to break down the basics of a lace kick. We here at SoccerTee never want players, coaches, or parents to feel overwhelmed with information, frustrated with constant failure in the learning process, or the stress or having to learn a whole concept in one motion. Referring to the article on SoccerNation, the author gives us great bullet points that line up very well to our SoccerTee values.    Pick one topic per session When working with The SoccerTee and especially young kids, it is very important to focus on specific ideas each practice or session. The SoccerTee was created to be a repetitive tool, because the more you repeat it then the muscle memory you are creating that will last a lifetime.    Pick one “goal” each practice or session With working with kids you learn that they love games and to know they accomplished something. One thing that we would encourage you to do at the beginning of each session would to be create one realistic goal and work hard to help them achieve that during your time together. And then the next time you can have another different realistic goal, and slowly you are putting these successful goals together and they create the final goal you were aiming for.    Treat a training session or practice like a season in a classroom This is exactly what SoccerTee wants. We want our product to build on itself. It is a tree-step system, and when you master the first step, then the second step builds on that. Once you have master the SoccerTee then you move into a game type situation and build on the techniques you have learned from the basics. This idea of saying things then pausing and letting the players figure it out for themselves is exactly what our desire is. We hope that our teaching tool will create the basic knowledge players need, and then they can fill in the blanks when it comes to a real situation. To help kids learn you have to let them use their brain and possible let them mess up or get it wrong for then we can step in with corrective criticism. When finding the best way to coach any player is a system or trial and error since no two kids are the same nor do they learn the exact same way. Also, do not be afraid to take things slow, because good things come in time. Take it slow. Work hard. Set goals. One step at a time. We cannot wait to see your players excel in the sport they love.
