Flag by Chiara No
Chiara No is an educator, artist and an amateur art historian. Chiara has an incredible practice that spans art space, the internet via social media, book stores and public spaces.
Find her on Instagram @chiara_no_ And @Tipper_Gore
No reimagines, rewrites and resists the societal limitations that pigeonhole womxn through textiles, sculptural objects, writings and book arts. Through the lens of horror and metal she creates spaces for celebration of what is typically seen as grotesque in womxns bodies and places that defiantly in the face of the observer. Chiara No refuses the “fragile flower narrative” and forces her viewer to confront what is beautiful, incredible and magical in relation to her subject.
This work is part of her flag/banner protest work. We are absolutely grateful to have her work displayed here at Pinch-hitter Projects and rest assured we will be showing more of what she does as time goes on.
here is what she wrote (re-wrote) for her Mask flag:
“As I went walking to the store that warm day
I saw before me that endless germ wave
Saw around me essential workers
This mask was made for you and me
So lets wear masks, and support small businesses
From our favorite restaurant to the local farmer
From the Arts and culture to minority run stores
This mask was made for you and me
My germ are your germs, your germs are my germs
From the tops of tables, to the public toilets
From the transit systems, to sandy beaches
This mask was made for you and me
My germs are your germs, if we're not careful
Your germs are my germs, let's help each other
From our friends and family, to my fellow Americans
This mask was made for you and me”
A blurb from her artists’ statement:
“I snake from one topic to another, familiarizing myself with the occult, Satanism, matriarchal herstories, and I dissent thinkers like, Timothy Morton and Donna Haraway. The metaphor of the circle is omnipresent among my topics, hence, the circle has become the equalizer for my disparate researches. Within the circle, I consider ancient signs and symbols, protection circles used in some religions, the panopticon as the all-seeing, infinities larger than infinity along side the duality of objects their fetishes. “

Free The People by josh graupera:
Free The People is a banner constructed from screen printed fabric and reflective mylar. #FreeThePeople became a viral hashtag in the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Groups like The Youth Art + Self Empowerment Project, Amistad Law Project, Decarcerate PA, The Philadelphia Community Bail Fund and others used #FreeThePeople to raise awareness and harness action around a) the hundreds of poor people sitting in our jails because they (or their support network) couldn’t post bail, b) teenagers sitting at Riverside Correctional Facility because they were tried as adults and c) a juvenile justice system that hoards young people into correctional facilities instead of addressing the root problems facing our neighbors.
Free The People was created to amplify the above campaign, using language created by the organizers of these groups, but it was also created as a simple demand to our society which birthed racial capitalism and robbed so many black and brown people of everything.
The great thing is, we can take it all back. For so many of us--whether we like it or not--the United States is our “home” and it’s our task to dismantle it and build another world based in intersectional organizing, racial justice and cooperative economics.
Hasta la victoria siempre! About the artist: josh graupera is an artist working in Southeast and Central PA. josh molds together visual and performance art techniques with community organizing strategies to help campaigns and individuals create demands, powerful graphics and community-centered stories. He has experience working with direct action groups, anti-gentrification campaigns, decarceration campaigns and a million cultural efforts. josh also a member of Bonfire Media Collective, a worker-owned media cooperative based in Philly's Chinatown. Keenan Bennett’s work explores through the archives of historical Queer existence. Exploring ideas through tropes and camp as related to Queer Male sexuality Bennett creates video, sculpture and drawing. We proudly fly this work from Fall of 2019 which challenges intimate exchange via interior and exterior context. this work strikes currently due to our need to maintain social distance as we negotiate desire. NYC released a COVID Safe Sex Guideline and we can’t help but parallel this piece when reading through the ideas offered in order to remain socially distant while being physically intimate. This flag Queers the textile project by pushing into another area of materiality.
