Suicide of Jacintha Saldanha

On 2 December 2012, St James's Palace announced that Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was pregnant. On 4 December, at about 5:30 am London time (GMT) or 4:30 pm Sydney time (AEDT), the hosts of the Hot30 Countdown radio programme, Mel Greig and Mike Christian, called the hospital and spoke to the main nurse, Saldanha. Impersonating Elizabeth II, Greig said: "Oh hello there, could I please speak to Kate please, my granddaughter." Saldanha responded, "Oh yes. Hold on ma'am," and transferred the call to the Duchess's nurse, who spent approximately two minutes speaking with Greig as well as Christian, the latter impersonating the Prince of Wales. The hosts used what were later described as "ridiculous comedy accents." 

The stunt was broadcast on 5 December, after it had been cleared by the radio station's lawyers. When hospital chief executive John Lofthouse learned of the prank call, he condemned it as an act of "journalistic trickery" that no nurse should have to deal with. 

The CEO of Southern Cross Austereo, Rhys Holleran, later claimed that station officials had made at least five attempts to contact the two nurses in the recording prior to greenlighting the call for broadcast – with Sydney University law professor, Barbara McDonald noting that his comments showed the station already understood they needed to "[get] consent (to air the interview) and they failed to". 

On 6 December, the radio station issued a brief apology for "any inconvenience caused" by their actions, although Christian continued to promote "the royal prank" on Twitter. Neither Saldanha nor the other nurse was disciplined or suspended by the hospital; St. James's Palace also indicated that they did not blame the nurses for their part in the incident. 

On the morning of 7 December 2012, Saldanha was found dead by security and other staff in her nurse's quarters at the hospital. She had died by suicide, and also had injuries. It was reported that Saldanha had left three handwritten notes, one of which blamed the radio stunt for her death. Another note discussed her wishes for funeral arrangements, while the third was directed at her employer, criticising their handling of events that followed the prank call.

Following news of Saldanha's suicide, Austereo CEO Rhys Holleran said that Greig and Christian were both "deeply shocked" and would not return to their radio show until further notice. A day later, as advertisers boycotted or threatened to boycott the station, 2Day FM suspended all advertising indefinitely.

On 10 December, Greig and Christian gave their first interviews since Saldanha's death, telling Nine Network's A Current Affair and Seven Network's Today Tonight that they were still "badly shaken" over the tragedy. 

Advertising on 2Day FM resumed 13 December, with Austereo announcing that it would donate the remainder of station advertising proceeds for 2012—a minimum of A$500,000 (£320,000)—to a memorial fund to benefit Saldanha's family. Austereo also cancelled its annual Christmas party for employees in Sydney and donated the funds for the party to the non-profit organisations Beyond Blue and Lifeline.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man has been arrested in the stabbing death of a Catholic priest who was attacked over the weekend in a church rectory in a small Nebraska community, authorities said.

The Rev. Stephen Gutgsell was assaulted Sunday “during an invasion” of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, the Archdiocese of Omaha said in a statement.

Gutgsell was taken to an Omaha hospital, where he died from his injuries, church officials said. Fort Calhoun, with a population of about 1,000 people, is roughly 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Omaha.

Police received a 911 call about an attempted break-in at the church just after 5 a.m. When officers arrived, they found Gutgsell injured and a suspected attacker inside. Kierre L. Williams, 43, was arrested on charges of homicide and using a weapon to commit a felony, Washington County Sheriff Mike Robinson said in a statement.

It is not clear if Williams, who is from Sioux City, Iowa, about 85 miles (137 kilometers) north of Fort Calhoun, has a lawyer. A message left at the county jail was not immediately returned.

In 2007, Gutgsell pleaded guilty to theft by deception for embezzling $127,000 from an area church. He was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution. He was later reassigned to another church. At the time, church leaders said Gutgsell learned his lesson, admitted wrongdoing and sought forgiveness.

Earlier this year, his brother, the Rev. Michael Gutgsell, also pled guilty to theft charges. He served as chancellor of the Omaha archdiocese from 1994 until 2003.

Robinson told WOWT-TV that authorities did not believe Stephen Gutgsell’s death was related to his criminal history. Robinson did not respond Sunday to questions on the topic from The Associated Press.

Archdiocese of Omaha spokesperson Riley Johnson declined to comment beyond confirming that Stephen and Michael Gutgsell were brothers.

When Donna Letto got a phone call one day recognized the voice on the other end. Or at least, she believed she did. "I thought it was my son," the St. John's woman told CBC News in a recent interview. "My husband was sitting on the chesterfield at the time I said, 'Oh, that's Daryl calling.'"

Her son's voice sounded off, though, and she asked him about it. "I said, 'You've got a bit of a cold, don't you?' He said, 'Yeah, I've got a cold the last couple of days. It's not COVID.' Then he said, 'I've been in an accident in hit a woman that's pregnant and been sent to the hospital with multiple injuries,'" said Letto.

"He said, 'Mom and Dad, I need your help.' We were really taken. I thought for sure it was our son. The kids never asked us for help before."

The man who Grenfell and Donna Letto believed was their son said he wanted them to speak with a lawyer, and then another man came on the line.

"We were talking to a man who was very professional in the way he was talking," she said. "He told us that our son is charged with dangerous driving while texting," said Letto.

He told them they needed to provide $9,800 to have their son released from custody on bail. He said a bonded court official would come to their home to pick up the cash and have it processed quickly. He warned them there was a court order forbidding them to speak with anyone, even family, about what was happening.

They were convinced their son desperately needed help and jumped into action. They went to the bank and withdrew almost $10,000 in cash.

The Lettos' daughter, Heather Crane, told CBC News her parents didn't think twice about it. "If one of us ever they would drop everything to help the kids. So they went off and got $9,800, and later that was on the phone speaking with the lawyer again, and a young man came to the door to collect the money."

That afternoon, just hours after the Lettos received the first call, the supposed lawyer called again, saying their son now needed to pay a fine of several thousand dollars, they withdrew the money. They were told to package the cash to a courier service in St. John's and send it to an address in Pointe-Claire, Que. When they asked why when their son was in Ontario, they were told Pointe-Claire was where the law firm's headquarters were.

Crane said it didn't feel right to her father, a 73-year-old retired police officer. "Something didn't add up. Dad realized something was not right," she said. Grenfell Letto decided to call his son's wife and said, 'What are you talking about?' and that's where it all unfolded," said Crane.

After learning their son wasn't in any sort of legal trouble, the Lettos didn't send the cash they'd packaged, and when the so-called lawyer called to ask about it, they gave him an earful.

No one has been charged about what happened to the Lettos they described is similar to other cases that have recently led to charges in St. John's. There have also been similar reports of this type of scam, in which a person who sounds convincingly like calls looking for financial aid. Police believe a criminal network is responsible for targeting seniors across Canada.

Experts say it's possible scammers are using artificial intelligence technology to create the voices that convince victims their relative is calling. Memorial University associate professor and computer security expert Jonathan Anderson says there are cheap, effective ways to replicate actual voices online.

"You can clone someone's voice, and given the ability to do that, it's not surprising that somebody would do that for nefarious purposes," Anderson said. "It's going to be more effective, especially while people get used to the fact that deep fake voices are a thing, and they are easily obtainable and easily accessible."

Police in St. John's say at least four other senior couples lost a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Gillen, 23, came to St. John's from Toronto to collect the money in person. Gillen was arrested on the tarmac at St. John's International Airport, on a flight leaving the province, on the evening of. He's facing 30 charges of fraud, extortion, and conspiracy to commit an offense.

The Lettos, who saw a photo of Gillen in court, said he was the man who collected the money from them.

Crane says her parents are deeply embarrassed that they were tricked into giving scammers money that almost kept them from speaking publicly about what happened. "At it was shock and relief. The days after were probably worse," she said. But her parents set aside their embarrassment in the hopes of helping people, she said.

"If this will help somebody else am more than happy for me to speak on their behalf because they truly want to help. They are genuinely kind people."

On September 5th 1750, the poet Robert Fergusson was born in the Canongate in Edinburgh.

‘Auld Reikie wale o ilka town’ 

This line from Auld Reikie, by Ferguson sets the tone for the main body of his output as a poet, written in the Scots tongue that Burns would later write so successfully in, if this other Robert had lived longer than the short years on this planet, I really do think that he would have been our national poet. The line means  Edinburgh: best of every town, so he was a champion of the city that he was born in.

Fergusson was brought up initially in Edinburgh but then moved to Dundee where he attended high school before being matriculated to the St Andrews University in 1765.

After the death of his father and completing his studies, the responsibility for supporting his mother fell upon Fergusson and he moved back to Edinburgh, taking up a post as a copyist. This caused some friction with his uncle as Fergusson had essentially rejected the excepted professions of the time such as lawyer or going into the church as a priest.  In 1771 he began to contribute poems to Ruddiman’s Weekly Magazine..

It was after he met Scottish preacher John Brown in Haddington Cemetery in 1772 that Fergusson, the 22-year-old copyist and author of Auld Reekie, had until then been a convivial man, at the heart of Edinburgh’s literary and social scene. But soon after encountering the theologian, he became gripped by “religious melancholia”. He shunned the limelight, preferring to stay at home and read his Bible, and his works took on a gloomy air. Then, a year after predicting he might share the fate of John Cunningham, a poet who had died in a mental asylum in Newcastle, young Robert had a fall in which he suffered a head injury, his fears were to become reality and ended up in Darien House, part of the city’s Bedlam asylum, on Bristo Place, where those with mental illnesses were offloaded. The conditions were terrible – food was in short supply and the use of restraints was commonplace.

Within weeks Fergusson was dead. His brutal end deprived Scotland of another potential bard (Robert Burns, who was inspired by his verse, erected a memorial on his unmarked grave in Canongate Kirkyard). His death was also a catalyst for a change in the way the city of Edinburgh looked after it’s mental health patients, thanks to a man who was a visitor of Robert Fergusson in Bedlam, Doctor Andrew Duncan.  In a letter to the Scottish Sheriff Deputy the doctor wrote of his experience of his visits with the poet that it “afforded me an opportunity of witnessing the deplorable situation of Pauper Lunatics even in the opulent, flourishing, and charitable Metropolis of Scotland”. By establishing the asylum in Morningside, Duncan contributed to Fergusson’s legacy, not just as a brilliant poet, but as someone who had a lasting impact on public health in Scotland.

Major Allison Digby Tatham-Warter, DSO, was a British army officer in WWII.

A Company was chosen by the battalion's commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel John Dutton Frost, to lead the 2nd Parachute Battalion in the Battle of Arnhem, part of Operation Market Garden, because of Digby's reputation of being an aggressive commander. In preparation Digby, concerned about the unreliability of radios, educated his men on how to use bugle calls that had been used during the Napoleonic Wars for communication in case the radios failed. He also took an umbrella with his kit as a means of identification because he had trouble remembering passwords and felt that anyone who saw him with it would think that "only a bloody fool of an Englishman" would carry an umbrella into battle.

A Company were dropped away from the target of Arnhem Bridge and had to go through Arnhem where the streets were blocked by German forces. Digby led his men through the back gardens of nearby houses instead of attempting to advance through the streets and thus avoided the Germans. Digby and A Company managed to travel 8 miles in 7 hours while also taking prisoner 150 German soldiers including members of the SS. During the battle, Digby wore his maroon beret instead of a helmet and waved his umbrella while walking about the defences despite heavy mortar fire. When the Germans started using tanks to cross the bridge, Digby led a bayonet charge against them wearing a bowler hat.
