McMurdo Internet
Internet service is supplied to Antarctica via a geostationary satellite. This far south, the satellite is only a few degrees above the horizon, and unfortunately for McMurdo, it's behind Mt Erebus. So the signal is beamed to a receiver on Black Island, about 20 miles away to the southwest, and bounced over to the sheltered alcove at the end of the Hut Point Peninsula where McMurdo sits.
Tumblr media
The Chalet, administrative hub, with Black Island in the distance
The Black Island telecommunications infrastructure was installed in the 1980s, long before the internet we know and love today. It was upgraded in 2010 to allow more data transfer, mainly realtime weather data to feed into global forecast models. For this reason, it's probably the only place I've ever been where upload speed is remarkably faster than download speed – 60Mbps for outbound traffic, but only 20Mbps for inbound. Most regular internet use is receiving, not sending, so that's an entire base running on a connection that's only marginally faster than the average American smartphone. As you can imagine, this is somewhat limiting.
The limits to one's internet access actually begin before one even reaches the Ice. At the orientation in Christchurch, one is directed to a URL from which one must download and install a security programme from the U.S. government. It may feel like a hippie commune full of nerds, but McMurdo is an installation of the American state, and as such its computer network is a target of whatever disgruntled conspiracy theorist decides to hack The Man on any given day. Computers that are allowed onto this network (such as the one on which I am typing right now) have to have an approved firewall and antivirus service installed, then this extra programme on top of them. I am not sure what it does. For all I know the CIA is spying on me even now. (Hi, guys!) But you need to install it to get on the McMurdo Internet, such as it is, so I did.
To be honest, I was rather looking forward to a month cut off entirely from the hyperconnected world, so I was a tiny bit disappointed that quite a lot of day-to-day communication is done by email, and I would need to be on my computer a fair bit to get it. Had I known just how important email would be, I'd have installed an email client that actually downloads one's messages instead of just fetching them; as it was, the cycle of loading an email and sending the reply, even in Gmail's "HTML for slow connections" mode, took about five minutes, not counting the time it took to write. Tending one's email was a serious time commitment; sometimes I felt like I was spending more time on the computer in Antarctica than I did at home.
Tumblr media
Crary scientists waiting, and waiting, and waiting
In a way, though, I was lucky, because I was technically a scientist and therefore had access to the one building on base with WiFi, the Crary Lab. And don't think you can just waltz into Crary with your laptop and poach the WiFi – in order to access it at all, you have to get set up by Crary IT with your own personal WiFi login. If you do not have Crary access, your portal to the Internet is one of a handful of ethernet cables in each of the dorm common rooms, or some public terminals in the main building. You can hop on, download your emails, maybe check the news or Google something you needed to look up, and then leave it for someone else. When most online time sinks are either blocked or too heavy to load, it’s amazing how little internet time you actually turn out to need.
Things that we have come to take for granted in The World are not a part of McMurdo life. Social media is pretty much out – the main platforms are bandwidth hogs even before you try to load a video or an animated GIF. There is no sharing of YouTube links, and no Netflix and chill. Someone was once sent home mid-season for trying to download a movie. Video calls with family and friends? Forget it. People do occasionally do video calls from Antarctica, often to media outlets or schools, but these have to be booked in advance so as to have the requisite bandwidth reserved. Jumping on FaceTime does not happen – not least because handheld devices have to be in airplane mode at all times for security reasons. Your phone might be secure enough for your internet banking, but not for US government internet!
It is, unavoidably, still a digital environment, it just gets by largely without internet access. Nearly everyone has an external hard drive, mostly for media that they've brought down to fill their off hours. If you want to share files you just swap hard drives, or hand over a memory stick. When the Antarctic Heritage Trust wanted some book material from me, I dropped it onto an SD card and ran it over to Scott Base on foot – a droll juxtaposition of high- and low-tech, not to mention a good excuse for a hike over The Gap on a beautiful day. It took half an hour, but was still faster than emailing it.
There is also a McMurdo Intranet, which includes a server for file sharing. Emailing someone your photos will take ages, but popping them into a folder on the I: drive and sending them a note to say you've done so (or, better yet, phoning them, or poking your head into their office) is much more efficient. To conserve space, this informal server partition is wiped every week, so you have to be quick about it, but it's an effective workaround, and also a good way to get relatively heavy resources to a large number of people in one go.
The telecommunications centre on Black Island is mostly automated, but like anything – perhaps more than some things, given the conditions – it needs to be maintained. There is a small hut out there for an equally small team of electricians and IT engineers; Black Island duty attracts the sort of person who might have been a lighthouse keeper back in the day.
Towards the end of my time on the Ice there was a spell where they needed to shut off the connection overnight, to do some necessary work. Given that most people's workdays extended at least to the shutoff time at 5:30 p.m., this meant essentially no internet for a large portion of the population, and some amusing flyers were posted up to notify everyone of the impending hardship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someday, faster, more accessible internet will come to Antarctica.  It's more or less unavoidable, as communications technology improves, and everyone's work – especially the scientists' – depends more and more on having a broadband connection at all times.  It will make a lot of things more convenient, and will make the long separation from friends and family much easier.  But I'm pretty sure that many more people will mourn the upgrade than celebrate it.  One can, theoretically, curtail one's internet use whenever one likes, but even before the pandemic it was almost impossible to live this way with the demands of modern life: I know from personal experience that opting out of Facebook alone can have a real detrimental effect on relationships, even with people one sees in the flesh fairly regularly, simply because everyone assumes that is how everyone else communicates.  Being in a community where no one has access to assumed channels, and is more or less cut off from the rest of the world in a pocket universe of its own, levels the playing field and brings a certain unity.  The planned (and, unarguably, necessary) updating of the physical infrastructure of McMurdo will wipe out a lot of the improvised, make-do-and-mend character of the place; how much would free and easy access to the online world change it in a less tangible way?
I'm sure the genuine Antarctic old-timers would shake their heads at the phone and email connections we have now, and say that no, this has already ruined Antarctica.  It's not Antarctica unless your only link to the outside world is a dodgy radio.  It's not Antarctica unless you only get mail once a year when the relief ship arrives.  Doubtless the shiny new McMurdo will be seen as 'the good old days' by someone, someday, too.  Change may happen slower there than elsewhere, but just like the rust on the tins at Cape Evans, it comes eventually, regardless.
For my own part, I'm glad I got to see 'old' McMurdo, such as it was, all plywood and cheap '90s prefab.  The update will be much more efficient, and tidy, but yet another generation removed from the raw experience of the old explorers.  My generation is probably the last to remember clearly what life was like before ubiquitous broadband; to some extent, Antarctica is a sort of time capsule of that world, just as the huts are a time capsule of Edwardian frontier life.  I hope they'll find a way to hang on to the positive aspects of that.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to waste an hour mindlessly refreshing Twitter ...

wrong day’s journey into right
words: 2,043 ship: austin butler x reader summary: (anon request based on this prompt idea) “Having a bad day and drenched in rain, the last thing you’re expecting is to meet your soulmate” notes: masterlist here, requests i’m working on here :) if you’d like to be added to the tag list, please let me know!  warnings: none tag list: @killerqueenfan, @karamelcoveredolicity, @elizabethrosecresswell, @gigisworldsstuff, @stylespresleyhearted
You’ve had plenty of bad days before but this one is really taking the cake for a bunch of reasons.
You consider yourself a pretty optimistic person, looking on the bright side of things, glass half full spiel, but everyone has their limits. It didn’t feel like a day to automatically climb back into bed, but maybe you should have? Just seems like you’ve been on the wrong side of it ever since you went to turn your alarm off and knocked your lamp onto the floor. One small thing after another but you kinda feel like you’re beginning to lose your mind.
The bagel place got your order wrong and you didn’t realize it until you were already at work, you have back to back meetings scheduled (so wrong within itself) and forgot to pack a lunch and it’s impossible for you to get away, the break room only has canned soup to make…and it’s all some sort of mushroom based broth (yuck), and the last meeting of the day runs over. It’s like a domino effect—because the last meeting runs over, it crunches into your dinner time and you planned on staying late anyways, but then you’re hungry (hangry) and snap at your assistant when she offers to help you organize things. Despite apologizing, said assistant goes home for the night and you can’t really blame her—you’ll grab her a coffee and a bagel tomorrow morning (hopefully the right order!) and make it up to her, apologize again.
But it just feels like some sort of never-ending terrible day at this point. Eating dinner feels empty because you’re rushing through it to get last minute work done and when you finally get to leave, you realize you didn’t bring an umbrella today…even though the forecast was not calling for rain this morning.
And it’s pouring, because of course it is.
Mumbling obscenities under your breath, you make a break for the street to hail a cab but you should already know at this point that that’s not going to happen smoothly. You’re ignored just long enough to get drenched, trying one more time with an aggressive waving gesture that doesn’t work. Ultimately you just give up, turning on your heel to rush to the subway. Two quick stops and you’ll be back home, you can get a hot shower, grab a bottle of wine and crawl into bed and pretend this day never happened.
Start fresh tomorrow.
Booking it across the street and down the block, you enter the subway and go down the steps halfway…only to realize you’re on the wrong side, you need uptown not downtown, and go back up to try again.
“Seriously about to lose it,” You mumble to yourself, crossing the street and finding the correct entrance. You let out a sharp breath and go down the steps, taking a moment to breathe and collect yourself before approaching the turnstile.
Scanning your pass from your phone, you move through and attempt to ignore how your clothes are sticking to you. Wet jeans have to be one of the worst things one could experience and your shoes feel squishy against your socks and ugh. You pull your hair over your shoulder and begin to wring it out as you walk towards the steps that lead down to the tracks, double-checking to make sure you’ve got the right terminal before making that mistake a second time.
Good news? You’re not wearing a light-colored shirt, so no one can see your bra. Better news, as you go down the steps, the subway you need has just pulled up. Maybe your day is taking a turn, you just have to pick up the pace down the steps, you’ll totally make it.
Except—you’re not paying attention to where your feet are going because you’re looking at the subway, just within your reach, and you either miss a step or overstep, you can’t tell, and suddenly you’re down.
Your footing disappears from under you, your leg bending slightly underneath your body and your gut reaction is to use your hands to break your fall. Which you do and it works but skin slides right against concrete and fucking ow. Also the subway doors close right in front of you—so that’s cool. A sharp noise definitely leaves your mouth and you’re not sure if it’s better or worse that there’s not a lot of people lingering to see you on the ground. If there had been a few more people around, maybe that would have cushioned your fall.
Bright side? Maybe? You didn’t hit your face, which, if your hands hadn’t been there your chin would have caught the pavement for sure.
Jesus fuck—maybe it’d be better if you just stay down, live here for the time being.
Groaning, you turn a little to put yourself in a sitting position, kinda doing inventory of your bones and such just in case. You had a friend trip over something in her back yard and she heard a loud pop and broke one of the strongest bones in her body, so, you’re really not taking any assumptions that you’re one hundred percent fine.
“Damn, are you okay?”
Blinking, you turn your head slightly to the guy who’s appeared and you have no idea whether you’re honored or mortified that this gorgeous stranger has crouched down to make sure you’re okay. He seems familiar for a reason you can’t put your finger on. This seems like the universe playing some sort of practical joke on you—handsome, boyish features, strong blue eyes, cupid bow lips and wide gentle curls of blonde hair near his forehead.
“Uh, I think—still assessing,” You let out a small laugh, looking down at your hands. They’re scraped up and so are your forearms. Crinkling your nose, you glance up at him, “Nothing seems broken.”
“Well, given the fact you seemed to sail off that second to last step, kind of impressive.”
You scoff, “Oh great, I’m glad you could see my humiliation from start to finish.”
He smiles a little, rubbing the back of his neck before offering you a hand, “Here, let me help.”
God, at this point, why not? The way your luck is going you’ll end up pulling yourself up from the concrete and somehow end up down on the tracks in front of an oncoming subway train. You allow your hand to slip into his and he gives you the support you need to tug yourself up from the ground. Your body is definitely sore but…nothing is broken. Once again, feels like miracle. Standing to his full height, you can see that he’s tall and long and his clothes seem to hug him perfectly while you’re feeling like some sort of drowned rat with your jeans wet. Doesn’t seem fair at all but very on track with what your day has been.
There’s a bench nearby and you move to sit down, smoothing your hands over your legs before brushing your hair out of your face.
“I’m sure someone at one of the desks has a first-aid kit.”
And you look back up at him because you half expected he’d be gone already, his civic duty for the day done. “Oh uhm,” You look down at your forearms and hands and…yeah, could probably use a Band-Aid or two but, “Don’t worry about it, I don’t want you to miss your train.”
He smiles a little, amused, “Kinda already did anyways when I saw you bite the pavement.” Perfect, lovely. “Besides, not like there’s not another one lined up in ten minutes. I’ll be right back.”
He turns to go back up the steps and you chew on your lower lip, kinda just…self-evaluating yourself. This guy is being so sweet even though there’s no reason for him to be. And maybe, maybe, you’d even consider your day turning itself around but with how things are going? He’s probably a serial killer.
Leaning back against the bench, handsome stranger (possibly ax-murderer) comes down the steps with a small white box. Sitting down next to you, he pops the lid open and sifts through for what you need.
“Should probably at least get your name if you’re gonna not only be nice enough to help me up off the ground but patch me up too. Need someone to address the thank you card to.”
He smirks, eyes glancing up at yours before looking back into the kit, “Austin.”
There’s this moment of utter whiplash as your brain makes a bunch of connections that you were missing—that’s why he looks so familiar, this is Austin Butler.
You can not allow yourself to think about this or you’re bound to pass out or throw up so best to table that for later. “Y/N.” You reply instead, “Nice to fall in front of you.”
Austin smiles now, something amused and warm all at the same time. “Nice to meet you too.”
He tugs out a few antiseptic squares for you, handing them over. Humming lightly, you tear them open and begin wiping down a few of your scrapes and cuts on your hands and forearms. Not terrible, not pleasant either. The Band-Aids are a little more difficult to maneuver yourself and Austin tears one open for you, handing it over.
“Can you—”
He blinks before a soft laugh, “Oh right, of course.” He uses his two able hands (slender fingers, rings…) to help put bandages on the larger scrapes on your hands and forearms. And then that’s that, good as new. Your pride is definitely a little sore, not to mention your knees and elbows but…could have been a lot worse, right?
Other subways have gone by but Austin has made no inclination that he’s missed anything.
“Do you make a habit out of this?” You ask after a moment, curling your hair around your ear, “Kind-subway-samaritan?”
Austin smiles, shrugging his one shoulder, “Only on Thursdays. Been thinkin’ of adding it to my résumé,”
“I mean, a Thursday gig is definitely gonna make you stand out against all your other accomplishments.”
And Austin laughs, something warm and genuine and God, it clenches your stomach and makes your cheeks tint pink. You can’t believe out of all the late nights, out of all the subway stations, exhausted and soaking wet and kinda hungry because your dinner didn’t even register with all the work you’d been doing, that you’ve run into Austin Butler.
The universe is really fucking weird sometimes.
You stand from the bench, letting out a soft sigh, “Thank you for everything—I’m gonna try to catch the train without faceplanting again.”
Austin chuckles and collects some trash to throw away, closing the kit and standing as well, “Headed home?”
“I was…but now I feel like I deserve a margarita,” You purse your lips…and a second dinner since your stomach is rumbling. You’re about to offer him a wave and another thank you when the next set of words pass your lips, you have no idea what really motivates you to say it,
“Want to come? I could buy you a drink—really the least I could do.”
And then your eyes kinda widen as your brain catches up with your tongue and you just…you just asked Austin to go get a drink. His eyebrows lift and there’s this amused look on his face as he reacts to your expression more than anything else. Your mouth opens and closes and you’re about to backtrack and apologize, or something, when—
“Sure,” Austin motions to the track as another subway screeches in, turning out to be the one that you need, “Can’t remember the last time I had a margarita.”
You feel like you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop but it…doesn’t happen. You turn and get onto the subway; half expecting for Austin to disappear or not get on before the doors close. And yet, he follows you on and sits down right next to you.
This has to be some sort of cosmic coincidence, right? And yet—as you look over at Austin and an easy conversation starts again about margaritas, you kinda can’t help it as you start thinking about the word fate.

A glacial winter wind swirls outside your kitchen windows as you peer beyond the curtains to find tall spruces sprinkled with snow, your front lawn covered in a blanket of fluffy white snow. As you rest your palms against the countertop, you ponder the scene outside, admiring the twinkle of decorative lights hanging from the varying rooftops down the block as they mimic the silhouette of icicles.
The kitchen is full of warmth radiating from the oven as it heats the space around you, the fireplace also aids in heating the interior of the house from the frigid cold whipping outside. The glow of the embers helps in creating a cozy atmosphere as instrumental Christmas carols project from the Bluetooth device nestled on your kitchen countertop. You gently hum along to one of your favorite Christmas songs, enjoying the festive moment alone as you turn your attention back to the sugar cookies you were decorating.
You start to meticulously pipe a pattern onto the flat cookies, distracting yourself in the details before you add a variety of colorful sprinkles for a festive flare to your baked treats. Every so often, you turn your attention to the pot of Korean dumpling soup simmering on the stove top, knowing the warm meal would be the perfect remedy to soothe away the frosty chill of the early morning.
You woke up early after spending most of Christmas Eve on your own, enjoying the time to relax and unwind from the chaotic reunion your family held the previous day. It was easy to keep yourself busy as you baked and cooked, eager to see Namjoon, your long-term boyfriend, would soon be home from his busiest shift of the year.
It’s been a couple of years since you first met, your first encounter being late one Christmas Eve as you found yourself stranded at an airport. A fierce snowstorm caused delays and cancellations, preventing you from catching your flight back home for the holidays. You never imagined you’d meet a handsome stranger at the small coffee shop hidden in your terminal, the layover allowing you countless hours to talk and get to know each other while awaiting your flight.
While you enjoyed getting to know such a man as Namjoon, the despair of being trapped in an airport on Christmas Eve made you feel helpless. Weather reports raved about how this would be the snowstorm of a century as the forecast continued to worsen as more and more flights became delayed and canceled. Despite the sorrow of the looking reality that you wouldn’t be home to see your family for Christmas, you continued to engage in conversation with Namjoon. You never imagined you would open up as much as you did to such a complete stranger.
After hours of waiting and becoming increasingly more hopeless, the storm suddenly faded away, completely clearing along the entire east coast of the country. After some preparations, your flight resumed, biding your newfound companion adieu. With a quick exchange of phone numbers, you were off to your flight leaving him behind. That was the very first time you experienced the magic of a Christmas miracle, never knowing that the man you would soon fall in love with was responsible for it all.
The time spent together has since enlightened you on the secrets hidden behind Namjoon’s perfect physique and charming personality. Not only was he incredibly intelligent and dedicated to you but he was also fun and lighthearted. Not to mention, he has the perks of being Santa Claus.
As you continue about your baking, you recall the first conversation you had with him upon discovering his life-changing secret. He wasn’t the jolly old fat man that lived in the North Pole with his many elves and reindeer. He was a normal man, just like any other with the single exception of inheriting the ability to manifest the magic that creates Christmas miracles and delivers blessings of all sorts to good little boys and girls. He was the famous man in the red suit, except his was simply just to shield him from the cold.
You feel a smile tug at your lips as you imagine all of the smiles of children around the world waking up to find their heart’s desire wrapped up in a bow beneath their Christmas tree, honored to know that the man responsible was on his way home to you from his busiest night of the year.
As you finish decorating the final cookies, placing them neatly on a decorative plate to set on the dining room table, you notice it’s already a few hours into Christmas morning. Given the journey across the varying time zones, Namjoon should be arriving home at any moment to enjoy the remainder of the early morning with you before resting for the majority of the day. You could go to sleep and leave him to his late-night schedule; however you figured if he was out making miracles, the least you could do was have a hot and delicious meal awaiting his return as a welcoming surprise.
You hum happily as you move about the kitchen, glancing over at the crockpot that was slowly mulling over a homemade spiced apple toddy. You smile at the delectable aroma wafting through the air as you lift the lid slightly to examine the contents inside. It isn’t much longer until you hear the front door swing open, the howling wind echoing through the house as Namjoon shuffles inside.
You quickly cover the toddy as you wipe your hands against the ruffled apron hanging from your hips, a cozy sweater adorning your torso as you comfortably lounge about the house in a pair of simple leggings. Your toes are nestled in a pair of warm Sherpa slippers, keeping you cozy and relaxed as you move to welcome your man.
You turn the corner of the open concept layout of your home, crossing the living room before spotting Namjoon standing by the door, speckles of freshly fallen snow decorating the crimson velvet of his coat as he slowly tugs the fabric from his towering frame. He’s wearing a plain black long-sleeve shirt beneath it, a pair of suspenders keeping his trousers comfortably on his hips as he leans forward to slip off his boots. You can’t help but gawk at the sight, feeling immensely lucky to have this wonderfully built man gracing your presence every day.
“Well well well…If it isn’t dear old Santa Claus.” You hum happily, leaning against the frame of the archway leading from the living room to the foyer, your arms crossing in front of your chest. A smirk crawls against your lips, tugging at the corners of your mouth as you watch Namjoon’s jaw tense from the name you just spoke.
His eyes darken as he peers up at you in annoyance, tilting his head to offer up the most ingenuine laugh. “Ha ha, very funny, Y/N.” Namjoon was quite the patient man, however, if there was one thing he despised the most, it was being called Santa Claus.
Namjoon knew of the many cultures that celebrated this time of year with the belief of Santa Claus and his sleigh of magical flying reindeer. He knew of the elaborate tales of the North Pole spun by society as a way to make revenue and capitalize on the marketing of such whimsical beliefs. It was all a fabricated image to help adults cope with the unexplainable, losing faith in magic and miracles whilst children continued the tradition.
Namjoon’s responsibility is to help people believe in the magic of the holidays again, working diligently to deliver miracle upon miracle to those who sought the path of living as decent human beings and interacting appropriately in society. He rewarded the kindness of children and helped maintain the essence of innocence that was so easily lost in this ever-changing world that so desperately sought to engulf whatever good remained.
His yearly efforts to deliver gifts to deserving children and maintain the image of Santa came with the unfortunate reality that everyone thought him to be an old, fat man with a long white beard.
You tut in amusement, pushing off the wall with your foot to take a quick stride toward the love of your life, eager to pull him into a warm embrace after an evening of solitude without him. “Aren’t I supposed to sit on Santa’s lap?” You push off the tip of your toes, wrapping your arms around his neck as you pull him closer to you, his hands latching onto your waist.
The tension in his jaw diminishes as he flashes his charming smile, the corner of his mouth tugging into a smirk. “Actually, you’re supposed to be on the top of the Christmas tree, angel.” Your nose scrunches from the cringe of your helpless holiday puns, the glimmer in Namjoon’s stare a clear indication that he’s equally as amused.
“Or I can be one of your presents, and get laid beneath it.” You respond without missing a beat, winking dramatically as pride swells in your chest from getting him to crack a smile. Namjoon’s dimples concave against his cheeks, a chuckle escaping his lips as he tightens his grip around your waist.
“You enjoy this Santa nonsense far too much, Y/N.” He complains with a soft groan despite secretly enjoying the sudden sprinkle of comedy. You shrug your shoulders, completely unashamed by your corny Christmas puns as you watch Namjoon lean forward to place a gentle kiss upon your lips. His mouth is familiar territory, his affection warming you from the inside out as your heart seems to fill with the comfort of his company.
Your eyes flutter shut as you lose yourself in his taste, your fingertips digging through the silver strands of hair adorning the crown of his head. You hear another soft groan rumble against your lips, this time exposing his satisfaction in the kiss as the loud grumble of his stomach interrupts your tender moment.
Namjoon pulls back from your lips to peer over your shoulder, spotting a plate of freshly baked sugar cookies as the smell of mulled wine wafts through the living room. His smile fades rapidly as he recalls the numerous amounts of cookies and various glasses of milk displayed for Santa on his travels, silently hoping there was something else to snack on after an evening in the cold.
You peer over your shoulder to follow his line of vision, settling your stare on the plate of cookies as you decipher his expression. A prideful smile tugs at your lips as you run your palms down his wonderfully muscular arms, shamefully feeling them up as you venture down to take hold of his hands. “Don’t worry…” You grin as you begin guiding him into the kitchen to present the delicious meal awaiting him on the stovetop. “I made mandu-guk. Figured it’d warm you up.”
Namjoon’s features illuminate in jubilation, his tongue running against his bottom lip as he locks eyes with you, moving to cup your face within his palms. “I fucking love you, you know that?” He purrs, crashing his mouth against yours to place a soul-sucking kiss upon your lips.
Your mind swirls from his intensity as your body ignites from the sudden foul language mumbling from his lips. You practically drown in his affection, feeling dizzy as you relish in his touch, helplessly letting out a moan of pleasure as his hands explore your frame. It isn’t long until you're panting against his mouth, your lips swollen from his treatment as your forehead presses gently against his.
You gather your thoughts with a sigh after being left in complete shambles from his declaration of love, watching him pull away to move towards the cabinets. You quickly return from your daze as you skip to block his path, holding out your arms to prevent him from moving further into the kitchen. “No no no, I will serve you.” You insist, watching as you anticipate Namjoon’s rebuttal. You cut him off before he can speak. “Go sit down, you literally made your way around the entire planet tonight. The least I can do is make you a plate.”
“Y/N, you don’t need to…”
“I want to.” You smile, pushing against his broad chest with your palms as you shoo him off. “Go! Or you’ll be on my naughty list.” You glare at him with a point of your finger, desperately holding back a laugh as you watch him roll his eyes in mild annoyance.
He tosses his hands up in defeat, reluctantly retreating to take a seat in the living room as he clicks his tongue. You spin around on your heel as you seek out a bowl and chopsticks from the cabinets and drawers, eager to serve your man a delicious bowl of dumpling soup after a long night of being Santa.
The comfort of the plush sofa cushions supporting your limbs allows you to rest your head against Namjoon’s shoulder, molding into his embrace seamlessly as he holds you against his body. Your bellies are stuffed full of dumplings and mulled wine as you enjoy the dim flickers of the fireplace and the twinkling lights laced throughout the towering spruce sitting in the corner of the living room.
You sigh happily as you focus on the deep rhythmic heartbeat thumping within Namjoon’s rib cage, feeling tranquil as your irises focus on the dancing flames and sparking embers of the fireplace. All you can hear is the crackling of the wood burning alongside his pulse, feeling thankful for the serenity.
You shudder as Namjoon’s fingertips brush against your shoulder, drawing slow circles against your arm as you both enjoy the tender moment alone. You finally peer up at him through your thick lashes, determined to finally break the silence. “I have something for you.” You speak with excitement, eagerly shifting in your position to sit up and face the man of your dreams.
Namjoon’s brow pulls up in a questioning glance as he adjusts himself to sit up straight from having leaned back against the back of the couch. “You do?” There was a youthful elation morphed with the usual raspy quality of his voice, the sound smooth as honey as you push off the couch to move towards the Christmas tree. (Loves!) You spot a red envelope tucked within the branches, plucking it from its hold as you practically skip back towards Namjoon.
Your eyes settle upon the faint glimpse of morning light as you peer out towards the horizon outside your window. The snowfall ceased as the first hints of sunrise peak through the houses of your neighborhood, a smile stretching on your lips at the fact that you’re spending Christmas morning with the man who embodied Santa himself.
“It’s nothing big.” You comment as you grip the envelope with both of your hands, holding it out to him as you take a seat beside him.
Namjoon accepts your offering, leaning forward to press a quick kiss to your lips as he slowly fiddles with the folds of the envelope. “You didn’t need to get me anything. I’m just happy to come home to you.” He admits charmingly, his fingers tugging out the confinements of your gift. He pauses as his eyes scan the pair of tickets now nestled in his grip, examining the text as he catches sight of the words, MoMA Museum.
“What’s this?” His features scrunch as he continues to examine the tickets. If there was one thing Namjoon often talked about it was his desire to travel with you and show you the world. You figure the best gift you could give him would be just that, an opportunity for you both to explore new places while doing things you enjoy.
“Well, I figured since your busy season is over we could take a trip to New York.” You beam, shrugging your shoulders as he continues observing the pair of tickets in his hands. “I know you love museums. What better museum to visit in New York than MoMA?”
Your heart somersaults as you watch Namjoon’s dimples return to his handsome features, his eyes bright with animation. “Y/N, this is amazing.” His voice causes your cheeks to ache from the smile plaguing your face, thankful to see his exhilaration for such a trip. “I can’t wait to go with you.” He quickly leans forward to place the tickets on the coffee table, wrapping his hand around the back of your head to guide you back in for another affectionate kiss.
You can’t help but smile against his lips as his hand laces through your hair, his body eliminating the remaining proximity between you as your arms wrap around his shoulders. Your eyes close as you savor his taste while his mouth gently latches onto your bottom lip, sucking the flesh gently as you feel a chill shoot through your limbs. This man knows exactly what to do to have you melting in his palms.
Before you can return his affection, he’s pulling away from you, leaving you pressing forward in search of his absence. Your eyes flutter open to see he is no longer sitting beside you on the couch, peering up to find him standing before you, extending an open hand.  “I have something for you too.”
Your head instinctually tilts to the side in curiosity, finding his stare as you hesitantly accept his hand, allowing him to pull you up from the comfort of your seat. His lips tug into a sly smirk, his dimples shining through his coy expression as his hands find solace on your hips. “You need to close your eyes.” He whispers temptingly, moving a hand up to brush a strand of your hair behind your ear to expose your eyes to him.
You narrow your stare, grinning as if nervous to trust him given his suspicious demeanor. You hesitantly obey, shutting your eyes to conceal yourself in darkness as you listen to him shuffle before you. What could this man possibly give you that he hasn’t already? He has given you the world by simply giving you his heart, what else could you need? You continue to let your mind swirl in curiosity as you feel him grasp one of your hands in his palm.
“Alright, open them.”
There is a slight tremor in his tone as you suck in a breath to ease your building nerves before letting out a sigh, flicking your eyes open to a sight that causes your jaw to unhinge. Namjoon is no longer standing before you, perched on one knee below you as your irises flick down to find his loving stare piercing into your soul. He’s holding your right hand while his other arm rests on his knee, his fluffy silver strands hanging just above his eyes.
“Y/N…I can’t imagine spending my Christmas mornings with anyone else.” He begins as you are suddenly faced with the realization of your predicament. “I’ve waited my entire life for you. The moment I saw you, I knew you were my Mrs. Claus.” He continues, chuckling nervously at his cheesy reference, unable to hold back your own bubbling giggle. Your heart swells from the bright-eyed expression he stares at you with, his jaw tensing up at the severity of his actions.  “Would you make me the luckiest man in the world? Y/N…Will you marry me?”
Tears haze your vision as you hold back a sob of happiness, watching in awe as Namjoon holds out his free palm, whisps of crystallized sparkles swirling around as a jewelry box magically appears in his hand. Inside the velvet box is a beautifully displayed ring, a princess-cut diamond reflecting all of the shimmers of freshly fallen snow. You clasp your free hand over your mouth as you hold back sobs of joy, nodding helplessly as you choke back your tears. You’re too overwhelmed to find the words to speak, finally choking out a “yes” as you lean forward to wrap your arms around his built frame.
Namjoon beams from your response, his fingers spreading against your back as he holds you close, pulling back to witness your tear-stained cheeks. He chuckles at your response, rubbing the pad of his thumb to wipe away your tears. “I love you, Y/N.” He presses a kiss to your temple as he releases your hand to retrieve the ring, sliding the extravagant piece of jewelry onto your ring finger.
You gawk at the sight of it, stunned to see how dainty it felt on your finger compared to the visual appearance of it. “Namjoon, It’s beautiful.” Your mind is still reeling at the reality that you’ve just agreed to marry the man that is Kim Namjoon.
“Not as beautiful as you.” He counters, standing up to grip your hips and pulling your body flush against his. He crashes his lips back to yours, shamelessly savoring you as a moan escapes your lips, wrapping your arms around his neck, pushing up on your tiptoes to meet his height.
Namjoon groans as you both deepen the kiss, letting your tongues break through the seam of your lips, eager to drown in each other’s affection. Namjoon presses his forehead against yours as you pull away, your lips swollen from his love as you pant to catch your breath.
“Think I can live up to Mrs. Claus?” You ask with a mischievous grin, running your tongue against your bottom lip.
Namjoon’s voice is deep as his eyes darken, drinking in the sight of your flushed cheeks. “Oh trust me, Mrs. Claus got nothing on you.” He’s staring at you as if you’re his next meal, your body shuddering from the implications of his tone, hoping the remainder of your night would be tangled with the man that engulfed your body with an insatiable need. Luckily for you, your wish is granted as he cups his hand beneath your ass, lifting you up as he encourages you to wrap your legs around his waist.
“Tonight definitely won’t be a silent night.” He brazenly admits, smirking naughtily as he begins guiding you toward your bedroom. You roll your eyes at yet another attempt at a pun, suddenly noticing the serious expression behind his tone. You gulp in anticipation, your eyes widening as he licks his lip lecherously.
Your body plops against the plush duvet of your king-size bed, the creamy softness of the sheets engulfing your limbs as Namjoon peers at you from his position standing at the foot of the bed. He tosses you down against the mattress top with every intention of ravaging your body like a present ready to be torn open on Christmas morning, tugging the fuzzy fabric of your sweater from your torso to reveal an intricate red lace bralette. His mind swirls in a lustful haze spurred by your acceptance of his marriage proposal, fueling his desire to claim you as his own while he devours the sight of your chest wrapped in the bright red fabric.
You push yourself up against your elbows, peering over your chest to find his dark stare coursing over your body as his large hands grip at the waistband of your leggings. Namjoon is eagerly anticipating the view beneath as he tugs them down gently from your frame, his length twitching in excitement at the sight of your matching lingerie set, relishing in the festive flare of your attire.
“Did I make it on your nice list?” You tease with a flutter of your lashes, smirking as you take in his perfectly chiseled appearance. You smile as you mule over the new status he holds of being your fiancé.
As you let the thought mule over in your head, his sudden intensity snaps you back into the moment. “Fuck the nice list.” He huffs, tugging the suspenders from his shoulders and letting them hang off the sides of his waist.
You gulp back your arousal as you watch him yank off his sweater, disregarding it completely as he tosses it to the side as you gawk over his physique. You hum happily in the back of your throat, biting your lip to sedate your growing sexual appetite as your eyes flicker down to spot Namjoon’s hardening length within his trousers. “Is that a candy cane in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?” Your smile widens in amusement as Namjoon’s jaw clenches, his chin protruding from his bubbling irritation.
“I don’t know, angel. Why don’t you get on your knees and find out?” He hisses, stepping back to allow you just enough space to sit up on the edge of the bed and slide down till your knees hit the plush surface of the carpet nestled at the foot of the bed.
His eyes narrow as you lick your lips at the thought of his member, your fingers helplessly clawing at his trousers to button them and tug them from his waist to let his arousal spring free. You’re met with the sight of his dick engorged and angry for attention, always amazed by the size of him each time you’re reminded of his manhood.
He peers down at you, letting a hand gently grip your chin as he tilts your head back to stare up at him from your position on the floor. “Wanna be my little helper?” He raises a brow in excitement, eager for your response as you nod shamelessly, submitting to his desires as your hands find home on his thighs. “Then open up, angel.”
You comply, letting your mouth encase the tip of his cock, which in turn sends his head back in ecstasy. “Fuck, Y/N. Your mouth feels so good.” He groans, digging his palms into your hair to massage your scalp as you begin to take as much of his length into your mouth as possible. Your confidence skyrockets as you drag another groan from his lips, his hips surging forward instinctually as you gag on his cock. “Shit…”
You adjust yourself as tears prickle in the corners of your eyes from the gagging sensation, completely unfazed as you continue to bob your head forward and back while sucking his length as if you're savoring the sweetest candy imaginable. “That’s it Y/N, just like that.”
The taste of him has you moaning against his dick, the vibrations of your arousal stimulating him even more as his muscles flex from the building pressure in his cock, desperate to spew his warm cum all over your tongue. Your muscle works to lick his length while your mouth tightens around him, his grip on your hair tightening as his hips begin to fuck your mouth with only a single warning of his undoing. “I’m gonna cum.”  He grits between clenched teeth as his moans signal his orgasm, his thick warm seed sliding down your throat as you happily swallow his taste. “Ah fuck, Y/N. You’re so perfect.”
Your tongue licks up any residue threatening to spill from his tip as you stand back up, relieving the tension of the floor digging into your kneecaps. A prideful smile is stretched across your lips as Namjoon moves forward to lay you back onto the bed, crawling over you with haste as he seeks out your lips as if they were his only salvation. Your mind hardly has time to process that you’re back on the bed before he’s caging you against the mattress with a hand on either side of your head.
Namjoon’s hand slips between the pair of you as he dives into your panties to press the pads of his large fingers against your swollen clit, relishing in the gasps that leave your lips. “Oh my god…” You moan as your head rolls back against the bed, letting out a pleasurable sigh as he works to stimulate your core without warning of preparation. Luckily you're soaked from the arousal of going down on your man, allowing him easy access to getting your body ready for him.
“Hmm, nice and wet for me, Y/N.” He tuts happily, moving to hover his face just above your breasts as he trails kisses down your neck. He pauses as he avoids your voluptuous mounds, moving his head farther down to start feathering kisses down your abdomen as his fingers rub gentle tight circles against your most intimate region.
You shamelessly sing his praise as your stomach becomes tight with anticipation, your words spurring him on as he slips his fingers back to gently press into you, feeling your velvet walls suffocating his digits as he easily pumps his fingers in and out of you. “Namjoon…Shit baby.”
Namjoon’s smirk grows wider as a smug look crosses his face from the sounds he’s eliciting from you, eager to slip in another finger to stretch you out for him. “Stretch for me, Y/N.” His raspy voice deepens as you feel the pressure between your legs, the knot in your stomach tightening as you pant with need, desperate to cascade down the slopes of your orgasm that crashes into you as Namjoon continues to pump his fingers despite the rush of liquid collecting between your legs.
“Fuck…” You breathe out, your limbs weakening as Namjoon proceeds to drag his fingers from your pussy, tugging down your panties to quickly discard them without a care as they are tossed from the bed.
“Damn, Y/N. You’re so fucking perfect.” He praises you, your heart swelling at his compliment as you push up on your elbows to meet his gaze. He moves like silk, skillfully maneuvering his hands around your torso to unhinge the clasp of your bra, tugging the alluringly colored lingerie to the side as he takes in the jaw-dropping sight of your naked body sprawled about the bed. “So beautiful.”
Your cheeks flush red from the heat of your orgasm and the blush of his words, watching as he continues to trap you beneath him, caging you under his body. He leans forward to hover his mouth just above your breasts, letting the warmth of his breath dance across the skin on your nipple before smiling maliciously. He blows a soft puff of air towards one of your nipples, a crystalized glimmer accompanying a frosty swirl of flurries as the pert bud hardens from the sudden chilled sensation. A shiver courses through your limbs as Namjoon utilizes his magic to blow another stream of flurries down the center of your chest.
Before you can dwell in the cold, his mouth encases your hard nipple, the warmth of his tongue soothing the goosebumps that appear across your skin, your body shuddering from the rapid change in temperature on such a sensitive part of you. You sigh in pleasure, running your hands down the length of his torso, letting your palms run against each perfectly toned muscle of his build.
He releases your nipple with a pop, grinning arrogantly as he pushes up to take in the sight of you beneath him. Your eyes feast on his physique once more, noticing his dick is hardened and ready for more attention as he continues to press kisses to various parts of your body.
You smirk maliciously, eager to throw one last holiday pun in while you can before things get any further. “Better wrap that present up before you give it to me.” Your irises glimmer with mischief as you watch Namjoon’s features harden in annoyance. He watches you, shaking his head as a slight chuckle escapes his lips at your endearing determination to rile him up.
“Oh trust me, angel. I’m gonna give it to you hard.” Namjoon admits brazenly as he lifts one of your legs straight up, running his lips against your inner thigh as he greedily kisses and nibbles against the plump flesh. You watch him, entranced by the way he manipulates your body as you watch him slide his arms around your thighs, tugging you back so your back end is flush against the edge of the bed.
Namjoon aligns his hips so that the tip of his member probes the entrance of your swollen pussy, sliding in easily as he pushes into you until he’s completely sheathed inside of your vagina. “Namjoon!” You scream from suddenly being impaled on his cock, Namjoon tugging against your thighs to pull your body flush against his hips.
“You feel amazing, Y/N.” He pants as your velvet walls adjust around him, suffocating his dick as he gently pulls back out before thrusting himself back in. He pauses once again, savoring every sensation of his slow methodical thrusts, your body lurching in pleasure each time he slides himself back out before ramming back in.
“Fuck me faster, Namjoon.” You cry out, desperate to feel the build of your orgasm as he forces you to endure his deliciously slow torment. He’s holding your legs out, his fingers gripped around your ankles to prevent you from taking matters into your own hands, laying there defenseless.
He throws his head back with a groan at the sweet sound of you begging for him to fuck you faster, practically growling as he picks up the speed of his hips. “You want my dick like this?” He asked through short breaths, snapping his hips as the sound of his balls slapping against your drenched core echoes around you.
“Yes, Namjoon!” You moan, feeling your mind spin with pleasure as the crown of your head presses against the mattress, your hands clinging onto whatever you can possibly grab onto, feeling wonderfully full as Namjoon ruthlessly pounds into you.
“Cum for me, Y/N.” He commands, his teeth clenched, jaw tight as your walls throb from the stimulation, feeling your body clench before convulsing around him, horrified by the amount of liquid between your legs. A couple more thrusts and he meets his own undoing, shooting warm strings of cum to coat your velvet walls, letting his head fall against your forehead as he releases your legs, letting them fall limp across the edge of the bed.
His weight crushes you as he lets his body relax from his release, shifting to lean on his arm to lay beside you, admiring the coloration of your cheeks spurred by his ministrations. “I love you so much, Y/N.” He grins happily, placing a kiss on your temple as he lets his head drop against the duvet to recover from the exertion of his actions.
You lay in a euphoric state, suddenly recalling the stunning ring adorning your finger. You lift your hand to admire the Christmas present, smiling as you tilt your head to the side to find the love of your life lying beside you. “That’s Mrs. Claus to you.” You grin mischievously, watching his eyes narrow despite the appearance of his dimples against his cheeks as a smile invades his lips.
“As long as you're mine, I’ll call you whatever you want.” He hums happily, wrapping an arm around your waist to tug you on top of him, not giving a damn about the mess between the pair of you.
You feel as if you're floating, peering into his eyes with complete admiration as you lean forward to press a passionate kiss to his lips. “I love you too, Namjoon.” You add with a whisper, getting lost in another heated kiss. A glimmer of Namjoon’s magic sparkles against the ceiling above you to reveal a small green sprout blooming from the drywall, a glistening mistletoe hanging above you as you get lost in the passion of your loving embrace.

Global Complement Inhibitors Market Will Grow At The Highest Pace Owing To Rising Incidences Of Autoimmune And Inflammatory Diseases
Tumblr media
Complement inhibitors are proteins that help in regulating the complement system in the body. By controlling the cascade reaction, complement inhibitors play a key role in restricting uncontrolled inflammation during autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Complement inhibitors work by blocking specific proteins in the complement cascade, thereby reducing tissue damage and preventing autoimmune attacks. Eculizumab and ravulizumab are among the widely used complement C5 inhibitors approved for treating paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). The market is also witnessing drugs blocking C1s, C3 and the terminal complement pathway.
The Global Complement Inhibitors Market is estimated to be valued at US$ 6.80 Bn in 2024 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 15.% over the forecast period 2024-2031.
Key Takeaways
Key players operating in the Global Complement Inhibitors are Alexion Pharmaceuticals (AstraZeneca), Apellis Pharmaceuticals, Sanofi, CSL Behring, Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Alexion Pharmaceuticals dominates the market with its C5 complement inhibitor drugs.
The increasing prevalence of autoimmune diseases like atypical Hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is driving the demand for complement inhibitors globally. According to estimates, over 50 million people suffer from some form of autoimmune disease worldwide.
Technological advancements are allowing researchers to identify new complement pathways and develop inhibitors against C1q, C3 and other complement components. This is helping widening the applications of complement inhibitors in treating various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Several pipeline drugs are under development that can block early stages of the complement cascade.
Market Trends
Growing preference for recombinant biologics: Biotech companies are focusing on developing recombinant therapies over plasma-derived drugs owing to their increased potency, stability and reduced risks of contamination. This is expected to drive the demand for recombinant complement inhibitors.
Increasing M&A activities: Major players are strategic collaborations and partnerships to strengthen their pipeline drugs. For instance, Alexion acquired Achillion and its C3 complement inhibitor candidates to expand its portfolio.
 Market Opportunities
Application in neurological diseases: Complement inhibitors are being evaluated for treating various neurological diseases like stroke, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis by inhibiting inflammation in the brain. Successful clinical trials can boost the market growth.
Scope in non-autoimmune renal diseases: Emerging studies indicate the role of complement system in acute kidney injury. Targeting complement can help treat conditions like I/R injury after surgery.
Impact Of COVID-19 On Global Complement Inhibitors Market
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted the growth of the global complement inhibitors market. During the initial phase of the pandemic in 2020, market growth slowed down significantly as hospital resources were diverted towards treating COVID-19 patients and elective surgeries and procedures were postponed. This led to a reduction in demand for complement inhibitors which are primarily used for treating paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). However, from 2021 onwards, as vaccination drives progressed and restrictions were gradually lifted, the market has started recovering.
Despite short term disruptions, the long term outlook for the market remains positive due to several factors. There is an increasing incidence of rare diseases like PNH for which complement inhibitors are a frontline treatment option. Advanced therapies like monoclonal antibodies targeting specific components of the complement system are getting developed which is expected to drive usage over the forecast period. Regulatory approvals of newer drugs will also support market growth. Geographical expansion into emerging markets and development of affordable biosimilars are future strategies that can help restore pre-pandemic market levels and achieve higher growth rates in the post COVID era.
In terms of geography, North America currently dominates the Global Complement Inhibitors Market in terms of value. This is attributed to the high healthcare expenditure levels and growing access to novel therapeutics in the region. Europe is the second largest regional market. However, over the next five years, Asia Pacific is projected to emerge as the fastest growing regional market. This is due to rising healthcare investments, growing incidence of target diseases, increasing medical tourism, government initiatives and expansion strategies of leading manufacturers in key Asian countries.

Cloud Cost Killers: 5 Strategies To Optimize Your Cloud Spend
As a CIO with over decades navigating the ever-evolving landscape of cloud computing, I’ve seen firsthand the immense value it offers businesses. Scalability, agility, and innovation are just a few of the benefits that have made the cloud a cornerstone of modern IT strategy. However, managing cloud costs can be a complex challenge. Here in the US, where operational efficiency is paramount, keeping cloud spending in check is crucial for maximizing return on investment.
Tumblr media
The good news is, there are a number of strategies you can implement to optimize your cloud spend. Here, I’ll share five key tactics I’ve found effective in optimizing cloud costs for businesses of all sizes:
1. Rightsize Your Resources:
One of the biggest cost offenders in the cloud is overprovisioning. Imagine renting a mansion when you only need a studio apartment. Cloud resources come in various configurations, and it’s easy to get stuck paying for more processing power, memory, or storage than you actually use.
The remedy? Rightsizing. Regularly monitor your cloud resource utilization. Most cloud providers offer robust monitoring tools that provide insights into CPU, memory, and storage usage across your virtual machines (VMs) and other resources. Leverage these tools to identify underutilized resources and scale them down to a more appropriate size. There are also automated scaling solutions available that can dynamically adjust resource allocation based on real-time demand.
2. Leverage Reserved Instances and Savings Plans:
Cloud providers offer various commitment-based pricing models that can significantly reduce costs compared to on-demand pricing. Reserved Instances (RIs) allow you to purchase compute capacity for a fixed term (usually 1 or 3 years) at a discounted rate. This is ideal for workloads with predictable usage patterns. Savings Plans offer similar discounts for sustained use of compute resources over a specific period, regardless of the specific instances you use. The key here is to accurately forecast your cloud resource needs to ensure these commitment-based models are a good fit.
3. Embrace Spot Instances for Cost-Effective Bursts:
Spot Instances are a fantastic option for workloads that are fault-tolerant and can handle interruptions. These are unused instances that cloud providers offer at significantly lower prices – sometimes up to 90% off on-demand pricing. However, spot instances are ephemeral, meaning they can be terminated by the provider at any time. This makes them unsuitable for mission-critical applications. Nevertheless, they’re a great choice for tasks like batch processing, data analysis, or development/testing environments where brief interruptions won’t cause major disruptions.
4. Utilize Cost-Effective Storage Options:
Not all data storage is created equal. Cloud providers offer a variety of storage options, each with its own pricing structure. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Block Storage (e.g., HDDs, SSDs): Ideal for frequently accessed data like operating systems and applications. However, it can be expensive for long-term archival needs.
Object Storage: Perfect for storing large amounts of unstructured data like backups, logs, and media files. It’s generally more cost-effective for long-term archival compared to block storage.
Archive Storage: Designed for infrequently accessed data that needs to be retained for regulatory or compliance purposes. It offers the most cost-effective storage option for rarely used data.
By understanding these options and categorizing your data accordingly, you can significantly optimize your storage costs.
5. Implement Cloud Cost Management Tools:
There’s a wealth of cloud cost management tools available, both from cloud providers themselves and independent vendors. These tools offer features like real-time cost visibility, anomaly detection, and automated optimization recommendations. Integrating such tools into your cloud environment can provide invaluable insights into your spending patterns and help you identify areas for cost reduction. They can also automate tasks like rightsizing and schedule optimization, freeing up your IT team to focus on other critical initiatives.
Embrace a Culture of Cloud Cost Awareness
Optimizing cloud costs isn’t a one-time fix. It’s an ongoing process that requires continuous monitoring, analysis, and adaptation. Building a culture of cloud cost awareness within your organization is key to long-term success. Here are some tips:
Educate your team: Empower your employees with the knowledge to make cost-conscious decisions when using cloud resources.
Set budgets and monitor spending: Establish clear cloud spending budgets and track your progress regularly.
Hold teams accountable: Incentivize responsible cloud usage by tying cost optimization efforts to departmental goals.
Regularly review and refine your strategies: As your cloud environment evolves, revisit and adjust your cost optimization strategies to ensure they remain effective.

Journalism’s biggest problem (The Hill) It is rare when university research has application in the real world. But a highly relevant study out of Syracuse University should be mandatory reading for executives in the journalism industry, not to mention Americans who consume news. The researchers, led by Syracuse professor Lars Willnat, gathered survey data from 1,600 journalists across the country. The result that seemed to draw the most attention was that only 3.4 percent of American journalists say they are Republicans, while 36.4 percent say they are Democrats. Right-leaning media outlets were quick to point out this imbalance. This raises the question of whether a wide range of perspectives can be found in the news agendas being paraded in front of news consumers. Fewer moderate or right-of-center working journalists also likely means search committees tend to leave out prospective hires who don’t share accepted newsroom views, further squeezing out the viewpoint diversity needed in media organizations. It is probably no coincidence that media credibility has noticeably declined as newsrooms have lost political balance. Audiences just can’t trust news outlets that are perceived as biased and ideologically unbalanced.
Some Americans have become saddled with credit card debt as rent and everyday prices remain high (AP) While the U.S. economy is broadly healthy, pockets of Americans have run through their savings and run up their credit card balances after battling inflation for more than two years. Experts worry that members of these groups—mostly lower- and middle-income Americans, who tend to be renters—are falling behind on their debts and could face further deterioration of their financial health in the year ahead, particularly those who have recently resumed paying off student loans. “The U.S. economy is currently performing better than most forecasters expected a year ago, thanks in large part to a resilient consumer,” wrote Shernette McLoud, an economist with TD Economics, in a report issued Wednesday. “However, more recently that spending is increasingly being financed by credit cards.”
The death toll from Chile’s wildfires reaches 131, and more than 300 people are missing (AP) The death toll from wildfires that ravaged central Chile for several days increased to 131 on Tuesday, and more than 300 people were still missing as the blazes appeared to be burning themselves out. The fires in Valparaiso are said to be Chile’s deadliest disaster since an earthquake in 2010. Officials have suggested that some could have been intentionally set.
Milei's controversial economic reforms stalled in Argentine Congress (AFP) Argentine President Javier Milei's controversial deregulatory reforms faced a major setback in parliament when the package was prevented from advancing and sent back for a rewrite, legislators said. Initially containing 660 provisions covering the economy, trade, culture, criminal law, even football clubs, the bill has since been whittled down to around 300 articles.
Spanish farmers blockade roads for second day against EU policies (Reuters) Spanish farmers blocked major highways with their tractors for a second day and disrupted access to port terminals as anger spreads in Europe’s countryside against high costs, bureaucracy and competition from non-EU countries. Fed up by the market situation and encouraged by similar protests in other European countries, Spanish farmers took their tractors out of their barns on Tuesday, two days ahead of protests scheduled by the country’s main farmers associations. Around a dozen major highways were blocked on Tuesday morning all over the country, traffic authorities said.
Lufthansa strike hits air travel as German disruption mounts (Reuters) Ground staff at German airline Lufthansa walked out at major airports on Wednesday, raising the pressure in wage talks and piling misery on travellers in Europe’s biggest economy already hit by strikes on railways and public transport. Some 100,000 passengers will be affected by the industrial action. he Verdi union targeted the Frankfurt and Munich airports, where Lufthansa says only 10%-20% of flights will operate, as well as Berlin, Hamburg and Duesseldorf.
Russian Strikes Hit Ukrainian Cities at a Tense Time for Kyiv (NYT) Missiles streaked into Kyiv early Wednesday in a Russian attack that killed at least five people, according to local officials, jolted residents awake with air alarms and explosions, and ignited a fire that sent plumes of smoke billowing over the Ukrainian capital. The barrage, which directed missiles and drones at cities across the country, coincided with a moment of heightened uncertainty for Ukraine. Russian forces are pressing assaults in towns and villages along the front, American aid is in doubt, and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine is preparing for what he has hinted will be a major shake-up in his government and the army’s leadership. Since the end of last year, Russia has stepped up its large-scale aerial bombardments in a bid to exploit dwindling supplies of critical Western air defense munitions and inflict maximum damage.
Earthquake survivors in Turkey struggle to rebuild their lives one year on (CNN) Five days after a devastating earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria last year, the world witnessed a miracle: Sezai Karabas and his 6-year-old daughter Sengul were pulled out of the rubble of his collapsed apartment block in Gaziantep province without a scratch. He may have looked like the luckiest man on earth, but he didn’t feel that way. His wife Rukiye and 4-year-old son Mehmet had died. “Even we don’t know how we survived,” Karabas said. As he tried to explain his miraculous survival to CNN, Sengul played with her cousin atop the partially cleared rubble of their former home in the city of Islahiye. “It was cold, we had no food, or water, but God gave us strength. We didn’t feel hunger, thirst or exhaustion even for a minute.” The initial earthquake on February 6 was 7.8 in magnitude; a second, 7.5 magnitude quake came hours later. The shaking lasted for only seconds but, a year on, it’s clear the impact will be felt for generations. According to official figures, 14 million people in Turkey were impacted by the earthquake. More than 850,000 housing units were either destroyed or badly damaged. Even a year later, there are at least 145 people missing, 38 of whom are children, causing continued anguish for their families.
Pakistan stages another unfair election (Washington Post) History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes. A bit more than a half decade ago, Pakistan staged national elections in a cloud of controversy. The eventual winner was boosted by the tacit support of the South Asian republic’s long-meddling military, which put its thumb on the scales in favor of its chosen candidate. The opposition saw its chief leaders sidelined on criminal charges that their supporters claimed were trumped up. They decried the result as “rigged.” Fast forward to this week, as Pakistan holds its latest general election on Thursday. A similar dynamic prevails, though the cast of characters has been flipped. Former prime minister Imran Khan, who surged to victory in 2018, languishes in prison on a slew of charges that make him ineligible to contest the election himself. Meanwhile, three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif stands a strong chance of winning a fourth mandate. The corruption cases that kept him out of the running in 2018—and sent him into self-imposed exile the following year—have been waved away by military authorities now more amenable to his return. The reversal of fortunes is part of the sad seesaw of Pakistani democracy, forever tilting through crises and interruptions. According to a new Gallup survey, 7 in 10 Pakistanis “lack confidence in the honesty of their elections.”
Foreign investors migrating from China to India (Bloomberg) A momentous shift is under way in global markets as investors pull billions of dollars from China’s sputtering economy, two decades after betting on the country as the world’s biggest growth story. Much of that cash is now heading for India, with Wall Street giants like Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley endorsing the South Asian nation as the prime investment destination for the next decade. That momentum is triggering a gold rush. The $62 billion hedge fund Marshall Wace has positioned India as its biggest net long bet after the US in its flagship hedge fund. Even Japan’s traditionally conservative retail investors are embracing India and paring exposure to China.
What Israeli Soldiers’ Videos Reveal: Cheering Destruction and Mocking Gazans (NYT) An Israeli soldier gives a thumbs up to the camera as he drives a bulldozer down a street in Beit Lahia, in northern Gaza, pushing a battered car toward a half-collapsed building. “I stopped counting how many neighborhoods I’ve erased,” the caption reads on the video posted to his personal TikTok, accompanied by a militaristic anthem. Since Israel’s invasion in October, soldiers have shared videos from Gaza on social media, offering a rare, unsanctioned look at operations on the ground. Some have been viewed by small circles of people; others have reached tens of thousands. The New York Times reviewed hundreds of these videos. Some show unremarkable parts of a soldier’s life—eating, hanging out or sending messages to loved ones back home. Others capture soldiers vandalizing local shops and school classrooms, making derogatory comments about Palestinians, bulldozing what appear to be civilian areas and calling for the building of Israeli settlements in Gaza, an inflammatory idea that is promoted by some far-right Israeli politicians.
Inside A Gaza Shelter, The Catastrophe Of War (Daraj/Lebanon) At the heart of southern Gaza, about 775 displaced families squeezed in a makeshift shelter amid rapidly deteriorated conditions. The shelter is one of many camps set up recently to house the growing number of displaced families who fled their homes during Israel’s war on Gaza. Tents are overcrowded, with an average of nine people in each one, but some host up to 20 squeezed together. That’s the case of Nourhan Yassin, a 22-year-old mother of two, who is living in a tent along with her husband’s family and other relatives. Life in the tent is extremely difficult especially in the cold winter. Yassin’s family sleeps on the ground, except for her husband’s aged parents who use two blankets. Yassin is concerned about her two children who are sick “because of this cold weather”. Clean water is no longer available in much of Gaza since Israel shut down pipelines that deliver water to the besieged strip at the start of the war. Yassin said her two children didn’t bathe for a long time. “The bathroom is very far from the tent, so I just wiped them with a cloth,” she said. Yassin sought help for her children, but the only response she received was: “We cannot provide anything.” Obtaining milk for her children is her daily concern—the same as for thousands of war-weary mothers in devastated Gaza. UNICEF has warned about the deteriorated nutrition of more than 135,000 children aged two or younger.
