The One Where I Say "French-girl style" 100 Million Times

I was recently watching a video on Alexa Chung’s YouTube channel (which I recommend) when I felt myself shudder. Now, I’m a person who gets cold pretty easily, and sometimes shiver so severely that it looks like I’ve been possessed. Alas, this body shuffle was not due to coldness. It was a reaction to a question that Chung had asked on screen: “So, what makes the French woman different from the British?” The video in question was on aging gracefully, and was part of Chung’s “Franglais” series in which she interviews various contemporary French icons — Josephine de la Baume has been a guest — about things that French women do exceptionally well. The reason that Chung’s question made me shudder, shiver, spit out my tea violently, is that it’s one that I’ve been hearing for years, ever since I fell in love with fashion at the delicious age of 12. And it’s a question that I’m pretty tired of hearing. For as long as I can remember, “French-girl style” has been sold as an aspirational yet illusive look. It’s classic and effortless; it never looks bad. It’s also dependent on the idea that French women have achieved a level of style prowess based solely on their being French.

For those who somehow have missed this phenomenon completely, let me clarify. “French-girl style” describes the style of any French woman (or French adjacent woman) who has claimed that Jane Birkin is their style icon. In the past it has been defined by vintage Levi’s 501s, ballet flats (Chanel or Repetto preferred), and brow grazing bangs. Recently, due to the popularity of brands like Rouje -- created by Jeanne Damas, another commonly named French style icon -- and Jacquemus, floral wrap dresses and straw bags have also been added to the rotation. Makeup is optional and mostly discouraged, with the exception of red lipstick; bonus points if yours is Chanel. The look is so consistent, your grandmother could set her watch to it.

The biggest appeal of “French-girl style” is its alleged effortlessness. It’s the appeal of being able to throw a coat over your pajamas, slipping your feet into a pair of sleek kitten heels, and running out of the door. When I I asked my friend Megan, certified Francophile and current Parisian resident, why she thought people were still attempting to achieve that mode de francais she said: “I think it has something to do with the attitude that goes with it. Everyone wants to look good without trying.” Everyone does want to look good without trying, especially women, who are asked to beautiful and slim and classy, but as if they emerged fully formed from the froth of the ocean. But for a lot of us, effortlessness is not achievable without a lot of work. Sometimes, it’s not achievable at all.

When I began thinking about why we’re drawn to “French-girl style”, one of the first things I thought about was the kind of woman the style was represented by. And like most things in the fashion industry, it was thin, white women who were marked to be the epitome of the style. In my “research”, I randomly opened three articles about “French-girl style” and only one of them had an image of a person of color as a source of inspiration. When I was 12 and eagerly cutting out French style icons from the pages of Teen Vogue, not a single one of them were women of color. Additionally, characteristics of the style, like a messy bedhead-esque hairstyle, are literally impossible for some women to achieve. No amount of bumble and bumble Surf Spray is going to make my 4c hair look like Caroline Maigret’s, and I’ve tried.

For their project, “7 Women on the Inherent Privilege of ‘Effortlessness’”, Elle magazine writers Chloe Hall and Justine Carreon talked to a group of women about the difficulties of effortlessness. Each woman discussed their personal experience with the idea of “effortlessness.” Most of their comments struck a chord with me, but there was one statement that I think summed it all up. It came from the designer Yousra Attia, who said the following: “Curvy, petite, ethnic, and transgender women know that they simply cannot afford to look sloppy in a world where they are already under the microscope.” A lot of women cannot afford effortlessness due to their position in the world, and the value placed on them based on their looks.

At the end of the day, I’m still saving pics of “French-girl style” into my outfits folder, and won’t ever stop watching Josephine de la Baume’s closet video on British Vogue. But I think that the idea that it’s a style archetype that is somehow superior to other trends need to die. “French-girl style” is no more exciting than any other trend that sells us wispy dresses for $300 . It doesn’t require any creativity or courage to put on a white button up and blue jeans. You just need the same Rouje dress everyone on Instagram is wearing. Shouldn’t we ask more from ourselves?
