The Future of Virtual Reality?

“We use gaming to introduce people to the technology,” says Alicia Hetrick of Augmentality Labs, the first virtual reality arcade in North Carolina.

Here, seven-year-old Phoebe Durlam plays “Job Simulator” at IntraHealth International’s latest SwitchPoint meet up two weeks ago. To her, she’s in a virtual office, she’s picking up phones and pouring coffee. To start. 

“We love gaming, we’re all gamers,” Alicia says of her team. “But virtual reality is going far beyond gaming.”

Virtual reality, or VR for short, is being used in teaching, training, rehabilitation, empathy generation, and many other fields. IntraHealth is interested in how it can be used to prepare health and humanitarian workers to perform their specific jobs, even in conflict environments.  

“Gaming is one way people are finding out about VR,” says Alicia. “They come in, they try it out, and then they think of the potential.” 

And that experience and pondering might just lead to a switch point—when two seemingly unrelated things combine to make something even greater.  SwitchPoint is IntraHealth’s conference where technology, humanitarian innovation, and global health collide every April.

Phoebe joined her parents at the SwitchPoint meet up. Who knows, maybe she’ll grow up to be a VR developer or even a health worker!
