Cousin George: "Only fools wear pajamas"
I'm starting a new series of autobiographical stories with a Gemstone connection, mostly South Carolina or megachurch-related. First up: Cousin George:
He was the son of my father's older brother, just my age, tall and blond, with a hard chest, a thin belly, and a Southern drawl. He lived in Walterboro, South Carolina, about 50 miles from Charleston but a thousand miles from Rock Island, so we visited only a few times during my chiildhood. Usually my Grandma Davis took me down on the train. What I remember most about my visits: the sizzling heat, the humidity, and the beefcake. No one in South Carolina owned a shirt. I had never seen so many muscular bodies.
And the racial diversity: Cousin George had friends who were Native American and Chinese, and even black (I never saw anyone black in heavily-segregated Rock Island).
We went fishing and crabbing, and Cousin George warned me to avoid the "dead man's fingers" inside the crab shells that would turn you into "a goon."
We went swimming in the warm salty Atlantic Ocean.
At night Cousin George and I took our baths together together in scalding-hot water, and then slept naked together under thin sheets -- "only fools wear pajamas," he insisted.
When I was 13, Grandma Davis got sick, and the train-visits stopped. We didn't stay in contact. Occasionally my father would tell me something about his three older sisters, but he never mentioned Cousin George. Apparently my uncle never mentioned him. Was he dead, or disinherited, or a disappointment?
Years later, when I was a visiting assistant professor in Florida, I got a job interview at a college in South Carolina, and afterwards I thought I'd look up my relatives. I visited my uncle and aunt, and Cousin Suzie, and then I asked about Cousin George.
They all exchanged glances. "Oh…um…we don't talk to him much," Cousin Suzie said. "He lives in Charleston." She said it with palpable disgust, like it was a cesspool of immorality.
"That's only an hour away," I pointed out. "And it's on my way home."
"Oh…um…he's busy with his own affairs, is all."
What would cause such obvious discomfort? I wondered. Only three things:
My South Carolina relatives were all strict Nazarenes. Maybe George was a backslider.
They were somewhat racist. Maybe George was in an interracial relationship.
Maybe he was gay.
Turns out: all three!
They gave me the address in Charleston -- they didn't have a phone number -- and I drove down. A massive African-American bodybuilder-type answered the door. Rod, the boyfriend!
Cousin George came home from work about an hour later, a massive blond bodybuilder-type (this isn't him, either).
We went out to dinner at the Boar's Head, a gay-friendly restaurant, and talked about bodybuilding and our jobs and romances, and the difficulty of dealing with fundamentalist relatives.
"You should have known about me back when we were kids," Cousin George said. "Why do you think I wanted to take baths together?"
"And sleep naked," Rod added. "'Only fools wear pajamas.'" They exchanged a glance and laughed.
Apparently he had heard a lot about my visits.
No, I didn't hook up with my cousin. But I did discover that both Rod and George still slept without pajamas.

Tropical Storm Debby slows down, dumps on southeast US
By Russ Bynum and Jeffrey Collins | Associated Press SAVANNAH, Ga. — Tropical Storm Debby brought prolonged downpours and flooding to the southeastern United States on Tuesday and was expected to hover over the Atlantic Ocean for the next few days, then boomerang back onto the mainland, leading to potentially record-setting rainfall. The storm was forecast to move relatively slowly across some of America’s most historic Southern cities, including Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina. The National Hurricane Center has forecast up to 25 inches (64 centimeters) of rain in some areas. Significant flooding in one Savannah neighborhood led to people trudging through water nearly to their waists Tuesday. Mayor Van Johnson said in a social media video that the city was making resources available to the residents. “The water is serious,” Johnson said in the video. “For those who felt this was just a rainstorm, that’s not it.” The storm’s center was 10 miles (15 kilometers) southeast of Savannah, the hurricane center said in its 2 p.m. advisory Tuesday. It was moving east-northeast at just 5 mph (7 kph), and right along the coastline near Georgia’s Tybee Island. “Tropical cyclones always produce heavy rain, but normally as they’re moving, you know, it doesn’t accumulate that much in one place,” Richard Pasch of the hurricane center said. “But when they move very slowly, that’s the worst situation.” Tropical cyclones derive their energy from warm water, so Debby has weakened over land, but part of the circulation was interacting with water over the Atlantic, Pasch said. The storm’s center could restrengthen Wednesday before it moves inland again Thursday over South Carolina, he said. The National Weather Service reported 6.68 inches (17 centimeters) of rainfall in Savannah on Monday. That’s already a month’s worth of rain in a single day: In all of August 2023, the city got 5.56 inches (14.1 centimeters) of rain. Flash flood warnings were issued in Savannah and Charleston, among other areas of coastal Georgia and South Carolina. Both cities announced overnight curfews as the rains picked up. Tornadoes knocked down trees and damaged a few homes on Kiawah Island and Edisto Island between Savannah and Charleston. A Walmart, an Applebee’s and other businesses were damaged and several vehicles flipped in Moncks Corner about 30 miles (48 kilometers) inland from Charleston. Charleston police barricaded all eight roads leading into the 350-year-old city built on a marshy peninsula Monday night after urging nonresidents to leave, and said the curfew would remain through Tuesday, letting only essential workers and emergency personnel pass through. The Myrtle Beach area in South Carolina was seeing some of the heaviest rain bands move through on Tuesday. Crooked Hammock Brewery in North Myrtle Beach decided to close early. “Flash flooding is super unpredictable, and we’d rather our staff and guests be home and safe,” marketing coordinator Georgena Dimitriadis said. The flooding wasn’t limited to coastal areas. Water started spilling over the top of a small damn near Walterboro, South Carolina, but it didn’t crumble, Colleton County Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief David Greene said in a video briefing. An apartment complex in Walterboro, roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Charleston, did flood and a number of roads in the county were blocked either by standing water or fallen trees, Greene said. Debby made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane early Monday along the Gulf Coast of Florida. Weakening winds made it a tropical storm again, but its slow forward movement and the ocean water it picked up caused intense flooding in places. At least five people have died due to the storm, either in traffic accidents or from fallen trees. About 500 people were rescued Monday from flooded homes in Sarasota, Florida, a beach city popular with tourists, the local police department said. Just north of Sarasota, Manatee County officials said 186 people were rescued. State officials said it may be two weeks before staff are able to fully assess storm damage in parts of north central Florida, as they wait for river levels there to crest. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned Tuesday that the threat wasn’t over. “You’re going to see the tributaries rise. That’s just inevitable. How much? We’ll see,” he said. “It may be that it’s not flooded today and it could be flooded tomorrow.” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp shared a similar message Tuesday morning, warning of more rain and flooding in the coming days: “Do not let this storm lull you to sleep,” he said. More than 155,000 customers remained without power in Florida and Georgia on Tuesday morning, down from more than 350,000, according to PowerOutage.us and Georgia Electric Membership Corp. More than 20,000 others were without power in South Carolina early Tuesday. President Joe Biden approved emergency declarations making federal disaster assistance available to Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Related Articles

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency Monday. Several areas along the state’s coastline are prone to flooding, such as Wilmington and the Outer Banks, according to the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program. North Carolina and South Carolina have dealt with three catastrophic floods from tropical systems in the past nine years, all causing more than $1 billion in damage. Forecasters said Debby could make another landfall near Charleston on Thursday. The hurricane center predicts the system could move up the middle of North Carolina, through Virginia and into the Washington, D.C. area by Saturday. Collins reported from Columbia, South Carolina. What we know about the Alex Murdaugh trial
Tumblr media
The Murdaugh family was in charge of a rural part of South Carolina for many generations. Alex Murdaugh was then accused of brutally killing his wife and son. What happened next was shocking: a life of power and privilege fell apart, exposing theft, drug use, and a failed plan for a hitman to kill himself.
Alex Murdaugh testified at his murder trial during the fifth week.
Mr. Murdaugh defended himself in court in Walterboro, South Carolina, by talking for almost 10 hours. During that time, Mr. Murdaugh would show two different sides of himself in court. One of them sounded like he was tired, and his voice was low and soft. In addition, he had lost weight while in jail, so his clothes were too big for him.
The other man seemed a lot more like the man other witnesses said he was: smart, charming, and once a powerful player in the state’s legal club scene. This Mr. Murdaugh talked to the jury face-to-face and was calm and in charge.
For almost a hundred years, the Murdaugh family was in charge of this flat area with marshes, palm trees, and houses with porches. They ran the local prosecutor’s office and a private law firm that made them very wealthy.
But Mr. Murdaugh’s life quickly went downhill after his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul was brutally killed in June 2021. The 54-year-old man has said that he did not do the murders. Instead, prosecutors say the murders were a desperate attempt to cover up wrongdoing with money over a long period. But when he was on the stand, he said he had stolen money, lied, and made up an attempt to kill the president.
The trial is getting a lot of attention from people nationwide. Some people in their small town think it shows how powerful the Murdaugh family is and that it brought down a local dynasty.
Know the name Murdaugh and you know the Lowcountry of South Carolina. From 1920 to 2006, the top prosecutor for the state’s Fourteenth Judicial Circuit was a Murdaugh man. This was the longest a family had held this job in U.S. history.
Even longer, the Murdaughs worked at the law firm that their family started, Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick (PMPED), where they made a small fortune and became the most powerful people in the Lowcountry. Everyone said that their personal injury law firm was the best in an area with many of them.
People who wanted to sue became used to going to their courts. Because of this, businesses that could have stayed away from it did not do business in the area.
People in the area said that the jury knew the Murdaughs, which was good for them at trial.
From their two offices in Hampton, the Murdaughs came to be seen as the unofficial leaders of the Lowcountry. Their effects weren’t huge—they didn’t even reach the whole state—but they were strong. People who lived in the Murdaughs’ small, remote town said they were in charge.
How did Alex Murdaugh reign supreme?
Jeanne Seckinger, who used to be the chief financial officer of PMPED, talked about how Alex Murdaugh works as a lawyer during the third week of the trial.
Ms. Seckinger said that Mr. Murdaugh’s success wasn’t due to his hard work but to his ability to build relationships and get people to settle with him and clients to like him.
He made millions of dollars from that work, which helped him and his family live well. They had a speedboat, a beach house, a big hunting property called Moselle with 1,700 acres, and a staff to help them. But Murdaugh’s success, which seemed to come naturally to him, hid his secret: he was addicted to painkillers and had stolen, lied, and embezzled for years.
Mr. Murdaugh admitted through tears on the stand in Walterboro that he had stolen millions of dollars from settlements that were supposed to go to his clients. In 2019, he stole $3.7 million (£3 million). He said that he knew it was wrong but had no money because he was addicted to drugs.
State prosecutors painted a picture of a person who thought he could get away with theft and fraud on a scale that was almost too big to believe. People say Mr. Murdaugh stole from his coworkers, clients, young people, old people, disabled people, and sick people. He is accused of almost a hundred different money crimes.
People have been going to the Walterboro courthouse early in the morning for over a month to discuss Alex Murdaugh’s fall. The line should be shorter to fit in. But, instead, people in suits and sundresses sit in rows and rows of dark wooden pews upstairs in the cool air of the courtroom. At times, the mood has been strangely like a church reception, with Mr. Murdaugh’s brother and son walking around, shaking hands, and smiling weakly.
In the next few days, both the prosecution and the defense will make their last points. After that, the jury will go away to think about what to do.
In the Lowcountry, many people said they thought Alex Murdaugh’s time was up.
But the Murdaugh family has used juries as a friend for decades. They have left courtrooms with rulings that have helped them get rich and powerful.
Alex Murdaugh’s fate will be decided similarly, which may be a final test of his power since all the evidence is circumstantial. No murder weapon was found, and no blood was on Mr. Murdaugh’s t-shirt that night. Also, no one saw the killings happen...Read More
