ANN Interview: Made in Abyss Composer Kevin Penkin
This is all originally from an Anime News Network interview.
Interview: Made in Abyss Composer Kevin Penkin
Interview Info: October 7th, 2014 By Callum May for Anime News Network
As a person who is aspiring to become a score composer (kind of an unrealistic dream that I can’t seem to let go), I found this really, really interesting. I left a lot of stuff in because I feel like there’s so much to unpack, and most of the information is interesting to me.
I did edit a few things out (mostly not music related), and I put in some square brackets for the sake of explanation and context.
Tumblr media
It appears that all of your anime soundtrack work has been with Kinema Citrus. How did you come to work with them?
I met Kinema Citrus when we were attached to the same project called "Under the Dog"[...] Since then, we've enjoyed a wonderful relationship on other projects such as Norn9 and most recently, Made in Abyss.
Do you expect to be working on anime outside of Kinema Citrus in the future?
That would be lovely. It's not entirely up to me, but that would be lovely. I'm very grateful to get any work in anime, as I'm very, very passionate about this industry. If I do get the opportunity to work on another project from any company, I would consider it to be a great privilege.
What was your first reaction to Made in Abyss when you were approached with the project? How much of it did you get to read?
I was given the first 4 books as source material to read and was immediately taken by the world that Tsukushi Akihito had created. The early stages of production were just me going through the books and finding interesting scenes or artwork to write music to.
Who did you have the most contact with on the Made in Abyss staff? What sort of questions did you ask?
I have a music director named Hiromitsu Iijima, who I would talk to on a daily basis. Every couple of weeks after a large chunk of the soundtrack had been written, we'd set up a meeting with Kojima-san [Director, Storyboard, and Episode Director] and Ogasawara-san [Animation Producer who works with Kinema Citrus] to discuss the current state of the soundtrack. We'd discuss if there were any points of concern or if anything needed to be changed. We essentially repeated that process until we were ready to record, mix, and finalize the music.
What sort of instructions and materials were you given in regards to making tracks for Made in Abyss?
In addition to all the manga books, I got a lot of background and concept art that I could reference. Trying to match the visual colour palette and the musical "colour" palette was really important to me. For example, looking at how the foregrounds and backgrounds were so juxtaposed gave me ideas such as writing for a small ensemble of instruments, but recorded in a large space. This was meant to act as a metaphor for Riko and Reg exploring in this humongous, expansive cave system.
Could you elaborate on the idea of developing a musical "colour" palette? How do colours and music correlate?
It might be best for me to give some examples. Starting more broadly with Reg, he's a character made up of both organic and mechanical body parts. So combining organic and mechanical sound sources when writing for Reg felt perfectly natural.
Talking more specifically about colour correlation, there is a lot of information in colour that allows us to perceive essential things such as relationships and distances between objects. The sound has this as well. Depending on how you combine the essential components of sound (pitch, timbre, harmony, loudness, etc.) and controlling how they either complement or clash against each other is going to result in a specific listening experience.
“Depths of the Abyss” is another example of the musical key slowly “ascending” over time to act as a sonic metaphor for the Abyss rising up to surround and engulf our main characters. There's the flip side to this as well. The title track “Made in Abyss” features descending string passages to represent Riko and Reg's descent into the world of the Abyss. I've personally found that thinking about these sorts of concepts can be very helpful when trying to establish the palette of sounds (colours) that you think will complement and/or enhance what's being displayed on-screen.
How much did you know about how your music would be used? Did you know that Underground River would be used to introduce the world in a montage just six minutes into the first episode?
Syncing music to anime is a slightly different process than what I've experienced [...] In the limited amount of anime that I've done, I've typically been instructed to create music away from the picture, which is then matched to the desired scene(s) at a later stage of production. This might contribute to why a lot of anime music can feel like a music video at times. From what I've experienced and from what I can research, I've seen directors take large chunks of time out of an episode to let the music take over so that the audience can “breathe". Underground River is a good example of this. [In episode one] you're introduced to characters, their motivations, world building, monsters and action all in a very short amount of time. Taking a minute or two to let the viewer digest all this can be very effective, and music can help with that.
You're also known for your work on Necrobarista and Kieru, two Australian indie games. What draws you to working on Aussie games, even after making your debut internationally?
[Being an Aussie], there's a lot of pride in how interesting and unique Australian indie games are. I've always had a connection to games and Australia. So even though I'm currently living in the UK, the fact that I'm still able to work on games with friends who are living back home is something really special.
It's not common to see an Australian in the credits for anime. Do you think musicians from outside of Japan are becoming more common?
I [...] grew up watching Dragon Ball Z on TV. There are actually two scores composed for that series depending on [whether you are watching dub or sub]. So I actually grew up listening to Bruce Faulconer's music for DBZ, not Shunsuke Kikuchi's original score.
[In regards to other foreign anime score composers] There are also other examples such as Blood+ with Marc Mancina, Gabriele Roberto with Zetman in 2012, and Evan Call has done quite a few things as well [like Violet Evergarden]. So I think while it may be becoming more frequent to see musicians from outside of Japan being attached to anime projects.
How would you say composing for games differs to composing for an anime series like Made in Abyss?
Speaking for myself, composing for games, anime, or whatever typically starts the same. I feel that if you're able to nail the concept and/or tone of the project, that's a big part of the process already completed. Then it's just up to the individual needs of the project. Games are typically approached from an interactive point of view. If it's film or TV, you need to know if you're writing to picture or if you can write with no time contractions like I described before. You sort of go from there really.
How would you describe that concept/tone of Made in Abyss?
Made in Abyss offered the perfect opportunity to get really specific with instrumentation. We had analog synthesizers, field recordings, vocal samples, and much more that were heavily manipulated to create distinct electro-acoustic textures. Deciding where to record was also a really important discussion, and we ended up recording at a studio in Vienna.
[It was] a huge, state of the art recording facility just outside central Vienna. I asked for a custom chamber orchestra comprised of three violins, three violas, two celli, one double bass, two flutes, two clarinets, one bassoon, two french horns, one trumpet, one trombone, and one tuba. Totaling 19 musicians. Each musician had their own “solo" part, meaning that there was up to 19 different “lines” being played at the same time during a piece of music.
The concept behind such a setup was to represent the small company of characters exploring the Abyss. Everyone's in this massive underground cave system, so I felt having a small group of soloists in a space designed to fit over 130 musicians was the perfect sonic metaphor for this. It just so happened that we were also working with some insanely good musicians and an unbelievable technical team as well.
If you were given the chance to collaborate on a soundtrack with one composer working in anime today, who would it be?
That's an interesting question. To be honest, I think I'd rather be an understudy of someone really experienced, rather than write side by side with them. If I could be a fly on the wall while Cornelius was writing Ghost in the Shell Arise, or Yoko Kanno while she was writing Terror in Resonance, that would be so, so informative. That said, Flying Lotus just got announced as the Blade Runner 2022 composer so I'd do anything to get in on that, even though it comes out in a few days (laughs).
Made in Abyss is one of the most highly regarded anime of the year. What do you think about the reaction to it?
I can't tell you how happy I am about the reaction to Made in Abyss. Writing the soundtrack was tough. The music is experimental in nature, and it required a lot of time and effort from many, many people. Everyone came together to make this work, and I'm over the moon with how it turned out.

How to Choose The Right Adwords Agency
email marketing for shopify
Disclosure: This content is reader-supported, which means if you click on some of our links that we may earn a commission.
According to Unbounce, half of the people who click on your ads are more likely to make a purchase than those who came from an organic link.
That’s a bit surprising.
You’d think with 600 million devices running ad blockers —advertising would be less effective. Google Ads commands 73.1 percent of search advertising, roughly $40.3 billion. Advertisers couldn’t afford to continue spending that much money on ads if they didn’t work.
Google Ads are effective.
What’s tough for many companies is choosing the right AdWords Agency. Managing Google Ads takes a lot of time, effort, and energy. Most companies choose to outsource that hard work to a PPC agency. If you plan on doing the same, you’re going to need to know how to choose the right agency to manage your Google Ads. Here’s how you do it.
Know Your Goals and Desired Outcomes
Google Ads is a direct response platform where customers are searching directly for your product or service. To achieve profitable results with your Google Ads campaigns, you’ll need to have some concrete goals in mind. In general, companies focus their attention on a few specific goals, such as these listed on Google’s website:
Get more calls to your business: Use this goal to book appointments, schedule a job, get customers, on the phone, or close a deal.
Increase visits to your store: If you’re a local business, you’ll want to generate foot traffic to your physical location via your Google Ads campaign. This goal would be all about generating offline demand.
Drive people to your website: The all-purpose goal that’s focused on sending people to a specific website so they can fill out a form, purchase your product, request more information about your services, or opt-in to your mailing list.
The ultimate goal for each of these is revenue; each of the examples above would be considered a lead. Unlike SEO, where results require weeks or months of work,  Google Ads is a direct response channel. A successful ad triggers immediate action from searchers.
The focus is on action.
Next, you’ll want to create specificity around your goals. This depends on a few factors like your budget, the keywords you choose, match types, etc. For example, if you’re running a service business, you know you’ll need a certain amount of leads. This means you’ll need to identify details like your:
Breakeven cost per click (CPC): This is the most you’re able to pay to receive a click without losing money.
Conversion rate: Most people know this one; it’s the total number of conversions divided by the total number of visitors you’ve received. How many conversions do you need to be profitable?
Breakeven cost per conversion (CPA): The average cost of a conversion.
Breakeven cost per lead (CPL): The most you can afford to spend to acquire a new lead.
Customer lifetime value: This measures the total value of a customer over the course of the relationship.
There are more metrics you’ll need to track, but your agency can manage these for you and provide you with the reporting you need once you’re up and running. Providing your agency with these numbers makes it easier to set things up; you can use these to set your daily/monthly budget, identify profitable campaigns at-a-glance, or set goals to boost profitability.
It would be best if you had a rough idea of the numbers you need to be profitable — the number of leads, sales, and customers you need each month for the campaign to be self-sustaining.
7 Characteristics That Make a Great AdWords Agency
Here are some things you’ll want to look for when vetting an AdWords agency. These characteristics are important must-haves. Use them to determine if the agencies you’re considering are a good fit.
1. Professional certification
The agencies you’re considering should have Google Partners status. Google explains this more, sharing why this is so important for your agency:
“Achieving Partner status means that your company has demonstrated Google Ads skill and expertise, met Google ad spend requirements, delivered company agency and client revenue growth, and sustained and grown its client base. Partner status gives your company access to a number of benefits, including the Google Partner badge that can be shown on your website and marketing materials.”
If you’re looking for an agency to manage Google Ads on your behalf, this is important for a few reasons. It shows prospective clients that:
Your agency has enough clients to meet Google’s spend requirements
Active clients are achieving revenue growth, and you’re delivering on your promises
Your agency is growing (i.e., more clients and revenue)
Google feels you have the expertise needed to manage Google Ads accounts for clients
If you’re looking for a clear indication that your AdWords agency is legit, this is it. You’ll also want to verify that each of the paid search strategists on your account are individually certified. You can verify your agency’s partner status with Google at this URL. Verification will provide you with a list of Google products your agency has received certification for, their partnership type, and the number of offices certified by Google. If they have a banner/badge on their website, you should be able to click to verify your agency’s status with Google.
If you’ve requested a proposal, you should receive links to the certification URLs for each of the strategists assigned to your account. The URL should be displayed in the following format:
https://academy.exceedlms.com/student/award/20xxxxx
Their certification should provide you with a completion identification number and the completion and expiration dates for their certification. Here’s what an individual’s certification looks like:
2. You keep assets and creative
Some PPC agencies rely on a pay-per-lead model. Using this model, they drive traffic to a general landing page or advertorial that generates leads for their clients. The downside to this model is the fact that clients don’t receive the landing pages, creative, or assets that went into producing the landing page.
This arrangement is great for agencies but bad for clients.
It’s great for agencies because they’re able to use one landing page or ad with multiple clients in the same industry. Sure, clients receive the leads that they need, but they’re always dependent on the agency that produced them. They never really figure out how to make things work for themselves.
This approach can work.
If you’re only interested in the leads and you’re not interested in creating your own content, landing pages, or marketing in the future, there’s nothing to worry about. If you’re also interested in sticking with the same agency indefinitely, there’s no problem.
Change any of those things, and you may not be able to continue to receive the same amazing results you’ve come to expect in the long term. Insist that your agency provides you with the assets and creative they’ve produced for your business.
3. Total agency transparency
Google requires agencies to be transparent with their clients. This has been a requirement for some time, and it’s another reason why Google Partner and individual certifications are so important.
“If you work with another company to manage your AdWords campaigns, you should be able to find out how much of your advertising budget (cost) was spent on AdWords, how many times your ads appeared (impressions) and how many times users clicked on your ads (clicks). We’ll include these requirements in our legal terms and agreements.”
Google also mentions that almost all of its certified partners are already offering this transparency to its clients. Transparency isn’t common with non-certified agencies; most agencies won’t provide this if clients don’t know any better.
If you’re working with your agency, you should have access to all reports. You should also have access to metrics including impressions, clickthrough rates, keywords, account and ad group structure, and more.  If you have questions about where or how your money is being spent, you should receive straightforward answers. Ask your agency about the information they provide to clients if you’re unsure.
4. Short term contracts
Some agencies prefer to lock you into a long-term contract (e.g., 12 or 24 months); this makes sense when you realize it takes a lot of time and resources to set up and launch a new client account. Most AdWords agencies don’t make money on the account until they’re a few months into the campaign.
This arrangement isn’t always what’s best for clients, especially if the agency fails to perform. Clients should be able to come and go as they please. When agencies focus on performing well for clients, the relationship is more stable.
Some agencies can offer month-to-month arrangements profitably. A compromise could be an initial three-month contract that switches to a month-to-month agreement afterward. Whatever you negotiate with your agency, it needs to be beneficial for both. If you’re unhappy with your agency, you should be free to leave.
5. A proven and consistent track record
Your agency should be able to provide you with references and case studies to validate their expertise. There shouldn’t be any doubt about your agency’s ability to perform. You should have the data you need to vet their experience and track record accordingly.
It’s not enough to prove that you’ve achieved amazing results for your clients. You need to demonstrate that you’ve been able to do it consistently over time.
Ask your agency for all of the data you need to validate their performance —references, case studies, anonymized campaign data, and before and after campaign data.
6. A clear process and methodology
Your agency should have an established process for managing and maintaining your account. They should be able to tell you when they add keywords and create new ads, how they set and maintain budgets across keywords and ad groups, and the adjustments or changes they’ll need to make for various markets.
They should also be able to tell you which tests will be run, how they’ll be run, and the metrics or KPIs they’ll be using to validate performance.
7. Optimize for conversions and revenue
I’m not talking about the Ads setting in your account. I’m talking about your agency’s focus on boosting revenue. It’s common for many agencies to focus their attention on impressions or clicks. Your agency should focus on helping you convert those clicks to revenue.
This means your agency needs to focus its attention on:
Ad messaging, improving the timing, targeting, and placement of your ads
Conversion rate optimization to improve the performance of copy, landing pages, and offers
Setting up analytics and reporting to track performance from keywords, to ad groups, to landing pages
A/B split/multivariate testing to improve campaign performance based on the data you receive from analytics
Google Ads is a direct response platform, so optimizing for conversions and revenue should be your agency’s primary focus. If they’re focused on anything else, they’re not a good fit.
How to Work With an AdWords Agency
Here’s a list of the things your agency will need from you. These requirements aren’t hard, but they do require some effort on your part.
Trust your agency: Your agency needs your trust. If you’re worried about being burned, watch them closely at the beginning of the relationship. Once you see that they’re competent and they’re able to manage your campaign properly, give them your trust.
Set quantifiable goals: Clear, measurable goals are what you need. If you’re looking for leads, set realistic goals on the number you need per day/mo. If you have a specific conversion rate, make that clear to your agency. Are you looking for a certain number of bookings? Make the requirements specific.
Stability and focus: Goal setting is important, but you’ll want to avoid changing your goals and KPIs repeatedly. Your agency needs time to gain traction. Your account managers need time to run tests, analyze performance data, and optimize for KPIs. Changing your goals repeatedly sets progress back, so you’re unable to get the results you want.
Commit to improvement: If your website can’t convert visitors, PPC is a waste of your time and money. This means tactics like website usability and conversion optimization are important must-haves if you’d like to improve your campaign performance.
Be flexible with your offers and price: Use promos, discounts, bonuses, or incentives to attract shoppers’ attention. Give your agency the flexibility they need to attract the volume of visitors you need. Let your agency know what your breakeven costs are, then permit them to work with the parameters you’ve set.
Create good products and services: If your product or service is terrible, conversions will be low. If you’re selling a product no one wants, or they’re unfamiliar with it, PPC won’t change much. Advertising can’t save awful products. Be willing to have a frank conversation about your products and services with your agency.
Give your agency the permission they need to make important decisions on your behalf. Establish a clear point-of-contact so your account strategists can reach out when they need your help. Spell out your expectations and communication standards ahead of time.
If you want weekly communication, let your agency know.

Creating The Perfect Coworking Website: Top 10 Elements To Keep In Mind
Creating a carefully planned website can improve your Google rank, attract new leads, and increase your conversion rate.
Great websites are never a done-deal; they require constant and regular updates and revisions.
A website shouldn’t just be informational, it should also be an expansion of your brand and your brand voice.
Is a website more than just strokes of brilliant colors directing our eyes to big blue buttons that read, “Buy Now?” Is being mobile first really the secret to dominating Google? Am I going to pen this entire article with questions? No.
Today, I’d like you to consider me as your digital website doctor. By the end of our visit, it is my full intent to reshape the way you look at your site and provide you with actionable items you can use to amplify your brand by creating a perfect coworking website.
A brief disclaimer: all of the below tips have the potential to work wonders for your website. However, in order for you to truly reap the benefits of your online presence, you will need to meet each of the below points consistently.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
TOP 10 ELEMENTS TO CREATE THE PERFECT COWORKING WEBSITE
1. A Coworking Website Must Speak The Lingo Beyond Images
Given that you’re hoping to attract people to your space, it makes sense for you to have a website that showcases your space and your community through pictures and images. However, in order to make your online presence more powerful and impactful, you need to spend marketing dollars.
This doesn’t necessarily mean spending your revenue in ads. In fact, one of the most overlooked marketing channels coworking operators can leverage are blogs.
In order for your blog to have an impact, you need to build it right and update it regularly.
Suggested Reading: “Why Content Marketing Should be a Priority for Coworking Operators: a Q&A with Content Expert Cat Johnson”
The perfect coworking website understands the value of consistent content creation. Think of writing blogs like going to the gym — you won’t see results after one three hour workout — you need to hit the treadmill regularly.
If you need some inspiration and blog ideas, check out these 20 article ideas for workspace blogs.
If you think you haven’t got the necessary amount of time and resources to begin posting regular blogs on your site, there’s still a lot you can do. Start by looking at your static pages (e.g. home, memberships, about us, and contact us pages). Do these pages have industry keywords incorporated into them? Remember that Google uses keywords to rank websites that appear in user searches.
If you haven’t done so already, review your website content and whether you’re using the right keywords (we suggest you check out this complete list of virtual office terms). You should revisit your static pages content regularly to make sure you’re still in sync with current industry keywords and trends.
2. Not Every Sale Is About Money
When is the last time you gave something of value away for free? And I mean 100% free, no strings attached and I’m not talking about free wifi or a cup of Joe in the snack room. I mean something truly free that has significant value.
I was recently published in Forbes where I breakdown different strategies your brand can leverage when using the power of free. In it, I argue that when you give something away for free, like a 14-day trial period, you open the doors to capture new leads that you can build trust with and eventually upsell.
Let’s connect this to your website. What are you offering for free?
Some ideas for you to consider:
Promote A Client On Your Social Media Channels
Host A Free Event Where Your Members Can Network
Offer A Free Trial Period So New Members Get A Sense Of Your Community
When you put money aside, you can see different ways to make a sale and build your business. I think this is the key to my point. Your website is a building block for your business, and it’s also a great engine through which you can spread the word about your space and how you add value.
3. Test Your Coworking Site Regularly For Flaws
I’ve lost count of how many websites I’ve worked on. One thing I’ve learned is that a perfect website is never truly done; they require constant care and reinvention. There’s always a new thing to test, core updates to make, keywords to change, and layouts to refine.
With websites, it’s not just about it being live; they need to be constantly updated and checked to make sure your ranking is not affected.
Which is why I recommend you set some time aside each month to test for bugs. Have someone click around the site, poke at it with a stick and see what breaks. If you’re not sure where to begin testing your software this article does a deep dive into the top 10 types of software testing you should be doing.
Let’s say you aren’t 110% confident in managing these bugs – I have a solution for that too. Check out the free trial on The Bug Squasher. With it you can add a simple bug tracking tool on your site and get a detailed bug report at your own pace via video, screenshots and more. Easy, right?
4. Understand Your Website’s Analytics
This part is about understanding your website traffic by using Google Analytics. Understanding your traffic is important because it can help you build a customer persona and, when analyzed and used correctly, it can provide valuable insights that can strengthen your brand and your product or service.
Pay close attention to the data — without it you are flying blind. What I usually do when I get access to a new site is review how users engage with the top performing pages: what’s the bounce rate, how many user clicks, how much time people spend on the site, etc. This is rich data that I then put to the “dumb test” to see which next steps I should take.
The Dumb Test: D is for doable. U is for understandable. M is for measurable. B is for beneficial.
To better understand how to use this test, check out this article where I breakdown the “dumb” formula. The formula can help you pinpoint the actions that you need to take in order to improve your website’s performance and conversion rate.
5. Above The Fold Is Gold
This is an image of Treehouse 51’s website homepage. You’ll notice at the very top we have a contact form to collect information. This is because we know the very first thing customers see when they land on our (and any) website is this top section known as the “above the fold” section.
If you haven’t done so already, do an audit on the above the fold section of your website. Do you have key information and strong call to actions that push leads further into your funnel? Do your images represent your target buyers? Is there a way to contact you and learn more?
These are all key elements your website should include in its above the fold section. Here are some quick recommendations to get you started: include a way for visitors to contact you (by email, chat, calls) and have a strong call to action button (schedule a tour, get a quote, take a virtual tour).
6. Testimonials Are Good, Video Testimonials Are Great
I can tell you all day and night Treehouse 51 rocks. We know what we’re talking about. We know how to make websites that convert. We love building marketing campaigns that bring in revenue.
But let’s be real, even though I say this, what worth does it really have? You don’t know me. We haven’t met. So why should you believe me?
This is why client and customer testimonials are important. They help establish a sense of trust between your brand, your website, and your visitors. At Treehouse 51, we recommend websites have at least three testimonials showcased on the homepage.
Bonus tip: Recorded testimonials are priceless to your business. But don’t take my word for it, see for yourself.

I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (http://www.youtube.com/editor)
7. Coworking Websites Should Promote Community, Not Barriers
Coworking is about networking. It’s about unity. It’s about community. However, a lot of coworking websites do not represent that messaging in their site build.
When traffic comes your way, you don’t want them jumping through hoops to schedule a tour. You want to keep things simple. You want to review each page and ask yourself what the key goal of that page is.
For example, if you’re leasing office space, your main goal might be to schedule a tour of the space. If that is the case, you should consider the following tactics:
Have a call to action button to schedule a tour
Include a phone number and email to contact you
Make it easy for leads to learn more about the space via images and copy on the site
Leverage a pop up to capture email addresses of site visitors so you can market to them later.
8. Choose the Right Server
I once met with a lead that spent thousands of dollars building their website but decided to use a shared server space when going live. You’ve seen these offers online. They are the ones that say, “Pay only $9.99 /Month for one year hosting.”
However, it’s important to keep in mind that when it comes to hosting, you get what you pay for. Cheap hosting leads to cheap support and slow sites. So when choosing your server, don’t go for the cheapest option; do your research, evaluate your options, and invest in the best option available.
One of the huge ranking factors Google loves to look at is speed. I see so many websites hurting on the SEO front and don’t understand why – a huge reason is because they went with the cheap hosting provider.
Before you go and buy a new server let me stop you. Not every server is built equally, and not everyone comes with a secret special deal.  If you are reading this article and want us to share with you a hosting bundle featuring social media posts, an easy to understand Google Analytics Report and more – well today is your lucky day.
The rules are simple, share this article on Facebook and tag us @Treehouse51inc – after reach out to me via our website and let me know when it’s done and we will tell you about an exclusive secret special deal as a thank you to the Allwork.Space community.
9. Stop Stressing Over “Likes” And Start Creating Champions
Don’t revamp your website thinking people will “like it.”  Build upon your brand so that the competition will want to follow you. So, how exactly can you do this? It’s simple.
Establish your brand voice and create unique valuable content around your brand (blogs, videos, social media posts). Keep in mind that the best websites are those that provide value and insights to visitors, when you successfully do this, visitors naturally turn into “champions” or ambassadors that support and share your brand.
10. Convert Process Revenue Online
Is your website even a “real website” if it can’t process payment online? There’s no right or wrong answer here, though websites that process online payments tend to perform best.
Though on the surface it might not make sense for you to sell your coworking services online, you should consider the option of allowing people to book meeting rooms, hire virtual offices, or pay for a coworking pass through your website. It makes it easy for visitors to follow on a call to action and it can generate some additional revenue for you.
If you use WordPress and are interested in starting to generate revenue online, we recommend you research WooCommerce. WooCommerce is an open-source ecommerce plugin for WordPress built for small and large sites (click here to watch Treehouse 51’s WooCommerce Tutorials series).
If, however, you think online payment processing is not the right choice for you, you can use what we are about to cover here as a way to curate your membership and vet people who use your space.
Bonus Tip:
Okay, if you’ve gotten this far, congrats. You are ten steps closer to revamping your website into a conversion machine. If you want to go deeper into this topic, read this  guide on 10 conversion tips that work on any website.

Scalability is one of the cornerstones of entrepreneurial success. Every entrepreneur wants to know how to scale. However, when it comes to taking action, they get stuck.
The point at which an entrepreneur is able to scale is when their revenue increases, while their operating costs remain low. I have been able to scale my business to where it is today. However, it took a lot of time, effort, and patience.
One of the biggest challenges that a lot of entrepreneurs face is trying to do everything by themselves. If you want to grow your business, you need to seek out help. The end goal is to remove yourself completely from the majority of your business operations. Doing so will allow you to focus solely on your strengths.
In our interview, Aaron talks about how to scale and automate your online business.
Can you share with people a little bit about your background and how you got into the business that you are in now?
I came across the ASM course in 2013 and I went full-in. I consumed the content and implemented like crazy. Shortly after, my business took off. After 5 months, I quit my job where I was working in the mines as a construction laborer in the far north west of Australia. I was like a kid in a candy store. I was launching new brands and products in a lot of marketplaces.
About one year later, my business started to decline. I was freaking out.
It took me awhile to join the dots together that you need systems in place in order to grow your business and enjoy your life at the same time. I ended up meeting my now business partner at an event. He went to the Philippines to put together a large team. I joined him there.
I built the systems and processes for a team of 45 staff who would run 10 brands and hundreds of products in different marketplaces. We figured out what worked and what didn’t work through failure. I’ve been helping people with their systems and operations ever since.
At what point should someone start to think about systematizing, hiring, and removing themselves from the operations side of their business?
It happens to everybody at some point. If you don’t start to offload tasks and really focus on what is valuable to your business, your business growth will plateau at some point.
I recommend that people get started as early as possible. You will be doing these tasks anyway, so you might as well hit record and build up an alcove of training as you’re doing it. It’s not that hard to get started. During the beginning stages of your online business, you will be wearing all of the hats.
Your daily workflow quickly builds up and you are stuck fighting fires.
As your business gets more complex, you start adding new products, brands, and marketplaces. All of a sudden you find yourself in reactive mode all day. The actual productive business growth work that you do is really small. It was T. Harv Eker that said that most startups spend 60-70% of their time focusing on the operations side of their business.
That translates in the Amazon world as working on ranking your products to page 1, building a list with Facebook and Google Ads, opening up new sales channels, and building relationships with influencers. These are all things which most creative entrepreneurs want to be working on.
Most people are not inclined to just offload work onto others because they come from an employee-framed mindset. That’s the challenge. I recommend that you create a big list of tasks that you do. One of the biggest mistakes that I see people make is that they hire the day before they’ve got stuff prepared. They bring on a team member, they give out a couple of tasks, but they end up spoon-feeding them. Soon after, the VA becomes a liability instead of an asset.
Before you even start looking for a VA, prepare a list of things to offload to him or her. Download, track and rank your tasks. In a presentation I do we talk about downloading – get clear on exactly what you have been doing over the last few weeks.
Look at your project management software, your to-do list, or your Google calendar.
Secondly, you want to track your time. Any time that you switch a task, write down the time that it took to complete it. At the end of the day, this is what dented my pride. However, this process also changed my life.
Third, now that you have data from the last few weeks, you can compile that into one big list. At the top of the list will be high-frequency tasks and things of low value. These are things that irritate you and that you shouldn’t be doing. Draw a line under the top 10. That’s your strike list of things that you need to get rid of. That’s how you prepare the list.
Now that you’ve got your list, you start recording training videos. As soon as the VA presses play, give them context – the outcome, purpose, and the success criteria for a given task.
This way, they will always know what good quality looks like.
If that procedure changes, then they already know what the outcome will be. I recommend using Loom or Snagit for recording video content. Now you’ve got a list of archived tasks to hand off to somebody when you bring him or her on to work for you. In the end, doing these things will increase the value of your business. This is the goal of most entrepreneurs – to make an exit, cash out and get rewarded for their hard work.
Once someone has created this process that you just shared, how would they go about hiring a virtual assistant?
Before you start looking for someone, it’s powerful to have your company positioned in the right way. I’m always a big believer in developing a company culture and establishing a clear brand purpose, vision, and values. That speaks volumes to people. If you want to attract a talented person to your company, then you need to stand out. An “A” player is somebody who is going to over-deliver, show up early and stay late. They are committed to the vision. They want to be a team player and are keen to build systems.
There are a number of platforms where you can find talent. Upwork is great. It has been around for years. There is Freeeup, which is a great service for on-demand. Lastly, there is PriorityVA, which is more of a higher-level project management software.
Ideally, your first hire will be someone that can do a lot of different things.
Within that hiring process, it’s important to disqualify fast. Get clear on who you are really looking for, in terms of what you need in your business. Always hire for attitude first. Obviously, someone needs to be competent, but if you have somebody that has an amazing attitude that is hungry to learn and wants to be a part of your team, then they can be trained in anything. When you are in the hiring process don’t get someone to create a document from scratch. Give them a broken document with mistakes in it so that they can improve it.
What has been your experience working with people from the Philippines?
I love Phillipino people because they are playful, respectful, hardworking, and easy to work with. They are great for doing a lot of the day-to-day customer facing stuff. You can find some really smart Phillipinos that can handle all sorts of operational stuff. They are driven to help you get results and they are excited to be a part of a team culture.
I know that one of your missions is to help feed people in the Philippines. Can you share more about that?
When I first arrived in the Philippines I was hit quite hard by the poverty. It was really tough to see. I knew immediately what I wanted to do. Everything that I do in business is to try and end suffering around the world. It starts in the Philippines because that’s where our team is.
When we launch a new brand on Amazon, every time we sell a product, we feed two children in an area of Manila known as, Murky Mountain.
This is a huge rubbish dump and one of the worst slums in all of Asia. It’s been there for 50 years and 50,000 people live there. I’ve never seen squalor like it in all my life. My mentor, Jane Walker, set up a school there 20 years ago and has been helping the families and communities that live there.
We connected and I asked her how we could support the school that she founded. We’ve been working with her to provide food to children and do our part to break the poverty cycle so that these children have a chance to escape the rubbish dump. Phillipinos are really resilient and resourceful. These children are the most inspiring people that I’ve ever met in my life. The one thing that I noticed is that everyone is happy that lives there. There is a lesson in that.
Once you’ve found someone and hired them, what would be the typical onboarding process?
Earlier we talked about how important it is to build that list of things that you need someone to do before you hire him or her. A lot of people struggle with the onboarding process. They will hire somebody, give them two tasks, and then they get distracted with all of the other stuff that they have to do. They don’t give their VAs enough work. The leader then feels guilty because they are paying somebody who isn’t doing productive work. The VA wants to do a good job, but he or she doesn’t have great work to do. The VA ends up becoming a liability.
This is why a clear onboarding process is so important.
When you bring someone on you want to ramp up responsibility over an 8-week period. Most people will give people 2-3 tasks and then leave them to it or they give them everything at once. Neither of these options is ideal. This is why we’ve created an onboard blueprint, which is how to bring your VAs from branding up to full speed. We call it getting them from novice to ninja in 8 weeks. At the high level, each week you want to be giving your VAs two tasks.
Each week needs a theme so that VAs can get up to speed and indoctrinate themselves into your world. Weeks 1 is all about connection, which means outlining the purpose and values of your company, getting them to meet the rest of your team, and then giving them access to tools that they need in order to get set up.
Week 2 is about clarity, which means outlining the outcomes for the quarter, in relation to the year. Outline where you are going and how your VAs fit into the company culture.
Week 3 is about routines, which means setting daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly rhythms that they are responsible for. You want to get clear on the meetings and one-on-ones that you as a leader or your team members will be having with the new VA.
Week 4 is the ramp-up. At this point, you define what your VA is going to be able to handle, based on their current progress. This is where a lot of entrepreneurs are reluctant to hand over some of their work. This is what keeps people from building their legacy, and ultimately, scaling their business.
Weeks 5 and 6 are all about leverage and lift-off.
This is where you are going to create the actual training needed and that will give you the bridge for you to be able to lift your business off.
Finally, weeks 7 & 8 are about recalibration and reviewing. You are going to check-in with the new VA and see what capacity he or she currently has, and what more she or she can handle, if any.
From there, you celebrate.
Can you shed some light on the money component of scaling a business that a lot of people get held back by?
If you are working on customer service in your business, you will do your head in. On websites like Upwork, you can find amazing talent for $4/hour. That’s a great deal. As a leader, you need to be working on $1000/hour tasks, whether that’s creating or ranking new products on Amazon, building a list of customers, or learning marketing. The more you spend time on the high-value stuff, the more that your value will increase, because you get better and better at skills that will grow your business.
You will be at capacity if you do not relinquish control.
There’s a mindset shift that needs to happen in order for your business to grow. Would you rather a task get done, or would you rather that it be yours? It’s liberating when you give up control because it allows you to take your business to next level. It’s all about achieving the outcomes that you desire.
As an entrepreneur, you need to stay in your zone of genius because that is the space where time dilates because you are loving what you are doing. It is where you are bringing the most value to your business.
This is how to scale and automate your online business.
I hope Aaron’s insights have inspired you to take action and start automating your business operations. If you aren’t yet using the power of automation, you are working too hard.
In the words of Bill Gates, “The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.” Choose wisely.

Nonetheless, we knew we intended to have a personalized developed residence. So on a boring Sunday morning we decided to head out to some open houses to obtain some ideas, as well as came across Brookmeadow Village in Grafton. We had considered a bunch of other areas that morning, as well as went to Brookmeadow last. It is discouraging to consider the tension of evacuating & selling a residence simply to relocate 10 mins across community, yet we really felt highly that Brookmeadow Village was using whatever we desired in a home/neighborhood. Tinkering with creative peppa pig completo children toys improves motor expertise and present a favourable method to relieve energy. By choosing quality Peppa Pig English kids toy from your corporation that research their companies extensively and consistently, you happen to be presenting a child a wonderful approach to foster inventiveness and activate mental development.
With this extreme consideration on peppa children toys safety and product recalls recently, in particular on play doh kids children toys shipped in from The far east, it is vital that customers learn and never misled. Even though it is factual that over eighty percent with the peppa pig videos kids toys available in this region are imported from China manufacturing plants and flowers, countries around the world don't make peppa pig english episodes youngsters toy -- firms do. It's important to not view all play doh kids toys children toys corporations being a singular thing.
This is a proven fact that major identify peppa pig français children toy brands like Mattel have had some merchandise recalled resulting from security concerns, but it is vital to established the history directly. Most peppa pig en español youngsters toy recalls are due to design issues - for instance compact areas that come out and provide a choking danger and never for the application of dangerous components. These design and style-forms of recall issues have almost nothing with regards to China suppliers and they are, the fact is, no manufacturing issue in any way.
Tiny Peppa pig em Portugues Brasil children toy corporations are engaged about recall doubts simply being caused by all companies, instead of the certain organizations damaged. There are thousands of play doh peppa pig children toys corporations in the Usa, yet the bodyweight of focus to recalls one of the sizeable play doh peppa pig youngsters toy organizations including Mattel and Hasbro bears weighty on little peppa pig english episodes kids toys businesses. A smaller peppa pig toys children toy firm in Madison, WI obtained this to convey on his or her blog about the Mattel Peppa pig em Portugues Brasil youngsters toy recall:
"The Mattel recall is terrible for the complete peppa pig kids toys sector... Mattel's failing to successfully manage their suppliers darkens the public perception of all China companies. It's unlucky this negative belief reaches firms that actually impose thorough quality expectations, industrial facilities whose solutions consistently complete basic safety and guide exams..."
Us citizen shoppers should know which the U.S. Customer Product Safe practices Payment (CSPC) can also be functioning very hard to ensure that the basic safety of play doh stop motion youngsters toys as well as other items shipped in from China. An International Buyer Item Safety Program known as the 2007 The far east System Strategy has long been executed. Responding to the issue of item recalls from The far east, the CPSC suggests, partly:
The Fee is exploring a range of means to lessen the quantity of consumer products imported for the Usa that create an amazing solution danger, that violate necessary item protection standards or that in any other case create an unreasonable chance to Us people. These endeavours have included the roll-out of a new Business of Overseas Courses; the creation of the China Software; involved in merchandise safe practices seminars; straight notice to producers and to General Administration for Good quality Oversight Assessment and Quarantine (AQSIQ) each time a China manufactured customer product or service remember occurs; and stepped-up dock and marketplace monitoring to help keep defective or violative items out from the hands of consumers.
You should see the affect of suitable United states standards, including ASTM-F963, which "relates to achievable threats that may not be identified readily with the open public and that could be come across from the normal use that a play doh peppa pig kids toys is meant or following relatively foreseeable misuse. The conventional includes requirements and contains test out methods for play doh toys kids toys designed for use by young children below 14 years old." These expectations are put in place as a voluntary method for the play doh toys children toy industry to law enforcement itself and protect the general public.
A 2nd way in which the CPSC works jointly with play doh kids children toy companies to supply safe practices facts to people is with package marking. Mothers and fathers and others can assist safeguard the kids they can be buying Peppa Pig games for by browsing the brands and following the referrals and warnings. A lot of issues in play doh stop motion children toy safety are specifically related to buyer choices to obtain peppa pig play doh kids kids toy not meant for a particular age range. Most peppa pig youngsters toys are shown an time status and a alert if there are specific causes, for example tiny parts, if there are unsuitable for young children.
Recall info that is certainly given to the multimedia as well as the consumer stops working to properly establish issues connected with era-appropriate products for the children. You will find a mixed accountability of peppa pig portugues brasil kids toy corporations, producers, government, and moms and dads/customers to computer screen grow older ideal peppa pig toys youngsters toy relying on the development of a child. When it is possible to pick a discovering online game or perhaps intellectually inspiring peppa pig full episodes children toy for the notably grown up kid, you should understand that the behaviors and instincts of small kids that can lead to some security issues with some peppa pig español kids toy and that the guidelines are set up with this factor at heart.
You will find a deeply issue for kids and safety concerns from the pig kids toys market, in fact it is a really actual problem which is attended to by most play doh learn colors kids toy businesses. The criteria which can be set by the play doh videos kids toys business have not improved regardless of the recent mass media uproar. These standards are higher and, when followed, will be more than enough to have peppa pig español latino youngsters toy risk-free.
At my pig youngsters toy business, Background in Action peppa pig full episodes children toy, I had consumed fantastic proper care in the style of our motion figures to make certain that our play doh ice cream youngsters toys are safe for any children who have fun with and enjoy them. It is very important me they supply a serious chance for sociable relationship and educational rewards, but safety is my most important priority when designing and producing our peppa pig toys kids toy. Right now we marketplace a few motion physique peppa pig episodes children toys that every depict a frontrunner from Us track record. We certainly have got our peppa pig francais youngsters toy individually examined by a third party to determine when they match the safety expectations established in CSMC's ASTM F963.
THIS peppa pig portugues brasil children toys corporation fails to ignore safety problems. I attention sincerely about young children and would not go into this enterprise or created peppa pig francais youngsters toys to them if this type of have been not correct. I proved helpful tough to opt for a high quality manufacturer in China, based on their record, the buyers they deal with as well as their features to generate a secure, quality solution. I personally visited the developing herb in Asia i always chose to make my goods, the two to guarantee high quality handle and to access know the men and women I am using the services of. I think of this both an obligation and a privilege and that i have invested significant amounts of cash and time to ensure our goods are and continue to be secure. Even though the vendor I picked had not been the most affordable proposal i always got, if it got right down to an alternative between being aware of I was making a safe, good quality peppa pig kids toy and preserving some funds, protection and quality won without a doubt.
I have utilized Bureau Veritas, an unbiased organization that really works with businesses world-wide to give self-sufficient screening, examination, auditing and certification to help assure they meet up with and surpass all expectations of basic safety. This self-sufficient testing bureau identified that my Peppa Pig em portugues brasil kids toys met the ASTM-F963 standard. I am just pleased about the positive results I actually have acquired about the protection of your play-doh children toy I produce.
Don't fresh paint all peppa pig videos kids toy businesses with the exact same clean. Although some businesses are already reach difficult with recalls, a lot more businesses happen to be in the same classification as mine, obtaining hardly ever obtained an dangerous peppa pig francais youngsters toys in the marketplace.
You may buy Peppa Pig em portugues brasil kids toys for your children this Xmas, created in the United states or in China with assurance and protection. Research the corporations you happen to be shopping for from to discover their safe practices history and their track record of handling and removing troubles and worries.
It is very important bear in mind most companies, inside the United states as well as in Chinese suppliers, produce harmless, quality peppa pig en español youngsters toy that match or go over safety requirements and this the amount of recalled products is certainly a tiny number of the entire volume of peppa kids kids toys available today.
Verify recall databases for example the the one which is supplied via the Customer Product or service Security Percentage . You can sign up to e-snail mail notice of solution recalls. You will also find great information regarding play doh toys and games safety with the Peppa pig em Portugues Brasil children toy Market Association's Web-site, . It gives you remember provides, specifics on play doh toys kids toys, shopping for recommendations and much more. This also handles the problem of purchasing peppa pig toys youngsters toys produced in Chinese suppliers from the "Often Asked Questions" portion of their site along with the subsequent response:
Q: Should I avoid any peppa pig français children toys built in Chinese suppliers? Won't that be better in my opinion?
A: All play doh videos kids toy sold in The united states regardless of where they can be created ought to conform to rough Usa safety criteria - criteria which happen to have offered as designs for other industrial sectors and countries all over the world.
Since it is corporations, not countries around the world, that will make peppa pig latino kids toys, it is actually businesses that are responsible for sticking with demanding safety specifications and carrying out inspections through the entire course of action. Unique on-website and away from-web site assessment occurs in all making plants and flowers, in Chinese suppliers and in other places. playdoh youngsters toys are randomly inspected well before export towards the US.
Considering the current recalls, there has been extra evaluating and vigilance by play doh peppa pig kids kids toy manufacturers, stores and importers."
I motivate consumers to assessment and follow very helpful Peppa pig em Portugues Brasil youngsters toy searching ideas shown below:
· Thoroughly look at the label and choose peppa pig portugues brasil children toy that carry the ASTM F963 label (Merchandise with this particular content label have gone through a whole assortment of tests and style and design specifications to eliminate or eradicate possible cause harm to attributable to the peppa pig full episodes children toys' makeup products or use.)
· Hunt for recommendations of correct age group varieties and cautions of little parts and other hazards
