I’ve always regarded the Ojamajo Doremi eyecatches as being unusually long (eyecatches being those little animations that play before and after where the advertisements would be, “who’s that pokemon” and the like), but today I decided to do a little survey to confirm if that is really the case. I timed each one in a very unscientific way, and then went around timing other eyecatches in order to compare. All of the Doremi eyecatches total more than 20 seconds per episode easily, with the longest being sharp’s at something like 26 seconds, but that by itself didn’t really tell me anything since I didn’t have any point of reference.
In the interest of being somewhat fair, I first compared it to other Toei animated Magical Girl shows, so I went with Sailor Moon and Futari wa PreCure since those are the ones immediately before and after Doremi. The first eyecatch for Sailor Moon runs at about 19 seconds per episode, and the two eyecatches for Futari wa Precure are about 14-15 seconds. Overall not a huge difference, especially with Sailor Moon, but a 5-6 second difference can really be felt over 50+ episodes. (Sidenote, but I find it pretty interesting how both OD and PreCure use eyecatches basically as a toy commercial, Toei really know what they are doing there I guess).
I went a bit more scattered with my next comparisons. The first set of eyecatches for another Toei show first airing at around the same time as OD, One Piece, ran at about 14 seconds. Cardcaptor Sakura, a Madhouse Magical Girl show at about that same time, only has 5 second eyecatches. Yume-iro Patissiere, a 50 episode 2009 show I checked since I happen to be watching it right now has 10 second eyecatches. It’s also probably worth noting that the vast majority of short seasonal shows I watch have no eyecatches at all, it’s for the most part a thing that just long running shows do.
This was hardly an exhaustive study, and I definitely have a bias for more recent shows in my memory than shows from like the 80s or something so maybe I’m missing something there, but I think I mostly confirmed my suspicions that OD has some pretty dang long eyecatches. I find this pretty interesting to think about, all these magical girl shows (except Cardcaptor for the most part, which has to change the outfit every episode) has an absolute ton of canned animation already in the form of transformations and special attacks and whatnot, and then with this on top of that I can’t help but think about limited animation in general. Like yeah, they do these things, but they also somehow release like four 50 episode seasons of an amazing show in only four years (keeping in mind there are 52 weeks in a year). This is definitely not something you can do without limited animation, and I think there is something special about kids having been able to grow up with these girls in real time. It also makes me think about how awful this show (and anime in general) might have been to work on, which is something I might want to look into at some point because I think it is important to acknowledge the blood, sweat and tears that went into this.
I don’t really intend to razz on OD for it’s eyecatches with this by way, in fact I think they’re more than good enough to warrant viewing 50 times over in 20 minute increments. This is just the way I choose to spend my time I guess.

5 Worthwhile commitments-Draft
These are some of the anime that I love, that are well worth the time it takes to watch all of the content. Anime on this list will be ones that have well over 2 full seasons of content. So any anime that is over 60 episodes and/or has a series of movies and tv seasons bundled together.
That being said there will be a number of anime that I would recommend highly but do not meet the limit that would take it to incredibly long status. For example, Soul Eater is not on this list, even though it is a fantastic anime, because even though it has 4 seasons, each season is about 12 episodes, adding up to 51 episodes. Its long, but not unusual in terms of anime run time. Here I am specifically talking about the anime who has a shit-ton of episodes and movies.
Lets get started!
Ghost in the Shell
3 movies, 2 full 20+ episode seasons, a series of 40 minute border episodes and more to come.
Fullmetal Alchemist
Specifically the original, up to a little over halfway, and brotherhood together.
D.Gray Man
100+ episodes as well as the new season called Hallow
Ruroni Kenshin
90+ episodes, plus Samurai X
Yume-iro Patissiere
50 episodes plus SP Professional
