This like will help broaden your understanding of substance use disorders mentioned in the following blog: This blog is also based on MY EXPERIENCE OF WEEK ONE at my prac venue, which is a rehabilitation center. So call me naive, or living under a rock or simply tell me I need to read more because maybe I do - I feel like I really do. Because this week for me was just shock after shock after shock😐. It was really eye opening and bottom line is that I learned a lot, more than I ever imagined. And also, I feel excited. My first week took away a little bit of my anxiety off. I went into this prac block feeling uber anxious! Because 🤔... Well because it's PSYCH! And that's extremely scary for me. I didn't know what to expect; I didn't know what to treat; I basically didn't know the first thing to do, not even what to assess. Lol. But now I've done some of it, so tick assessment off my list 💪. And I did it pretty well too. I felt out of my comfort zone which is good believe it or not cause that's why I feel like I learnt the most. All the probing and asking weird uncomfortable questions and seeing people that I'm working actually respond to me and get cool with me, you know... But I just want to talk about substance abuse! And something that really eating at me. So I see that I underestimated addiction and what addiction actually does to people (refer to my link). Beating addiction is hard work and living with addiction is a life I cannot begin to imagine. All these people I've met suffer jail time because they literally (literally in the literal sense) have to steal several times a day every single day in order to be able to feed their addictions. It. Is. Bad. They steal from their loved ones; they become angry; they neglect self-care by going days without even being able to shower because all they think about if their next "fix"; they are unable to work or go to school because they can't focus while not being high at the same time and they get into trouble as well; the list goes on. And to the school-going kids, I am heartbroken by the system of things whereby they are taken out of the education system because of their addictions. So they use drugs, sell them, develop behavioural problem and basically end up on the wrong side of the school's codes of conduct. They eventually will get expelled and blacklisted off the Department of Education or end up with bad reputations they cannot fix. They address the issue by going into rehabs to get help, they get help, stay clean but go back into a system where they cannot be accepted into any school because these schools are not obliged to take these kids back even after rehab. And in our country we know the competition in our workforce is bad enough when you're qualified with tertiary education so under qualifying jobs are highly competitive and they end up without a job. And then what? No school to go to? No job? (Can't afford private education probably, there's a reason they don't go there in the first place right?) So don't they have all the time in the world to go back to drugs? Communities - our communities also contribute highly to relapse. So many South African communities re infested with pubs and wunga houses only and that's the only form of entertainment or "recreation". 1. There are no recreation opportunities for our youth in township communities 2. There are no after school or extra-mural programmes for young kids to participate in after school and on weekends. 3. There are no secure entertainment events organized for the youth 4. There are way too many child-headed households resulting from HIV/AIDS or unemployment where parents leave to go reside in urban areas for jobs and leave children alone or with grandparents (who eventually die). 5. Police in the area accept bribes Take this into consideration and just think about how all these factors contribute to relapse and further drug addiction. When one or two individuals are seeking help in rehabilitation and going back to communities infected with such issues and a youth pendemic of drug addciction, how are one or two individuals supposed to survive back there? This really hit my soul.
