Scandal: Bolsonaro tried to smuggle Arabian jewels into Brazil

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tried to smuggle into his country almost US$ 3 million worth of jewels, O Estado de Sao Paulo reported. The newspaper article also explained that “a necklace, a ring, a watch and a pair of diamond earrings,” had been a gift Saudi Arabia gave then-First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro in Oct. 2021.

But the undeclared items were seized at Sao Paulo's Guarulhos international airport where customs agents found them in the backpack of one of the military personnel traveling back to Brazil. Former Minister of Mines and Energy Bento Albuquerque tried to recover the jewelry on numerous occasions but to no avail.

The Brazilian newspaper said that in the last two months of Bolsonaro's term, four attempts were made to recover the gifts mobilizing even the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economy, all unsuccessful. The only way to recover the jewelry would be to pay the mandatory tax for their import, (50% of their value plus a 25% fine for not declaring them). The other alternative would be to declare them as an “official gift to the President of the Republic and the First Lady,” in which case they would belong to the State of Brazil, not to the Bolsonaros.

The Zoo Keeper

#223 is a series of one-act, one scene plays

DRAMATIS PERSONAE

Jim the Zoo Keeper: wears a grey zookeeper uniform and hat; is friend to all animals

Josephine: Zoo veterinarian; not afraid to speak her mind.  

Duchess of Marmite: Royalty throwing a party at the zoo for her latest acquisition, the Majestic L'Incomparable Diamond Necklace, inherited from her late husband the Maharajah of Dharampur.  

Harold: Zoo ostrich. Sometimes ridden like a horse by Zoo Keeper in times of trouble.

[ACT 1, scene 1: Zoo. The ZOO KEEPER and JOSEPHINE stand on the main walkway with HAROLD THE OSTRICH. Gunshots and explosions. People screaming. Cages are open. An emu races by].

ZOO KEEPER: Josephine, take Harold the ostrich and race to the entrance to guide the patrons out. Your hunch was right. Those waiters actually were criminals in disguise.

[A tiger streaks by with a koala hanging on for dear life]

JOSEPHINE: But how did the criminals open the cages?

[A polar bear roars by entangled in colorful balloons].  

ZOO KEEPER: Remember that monkey I said I didn’t recognize? The one with the shifty eyes? That was their plant. They trained him to sneak into the monkey house before today’s unveiling of Lady Marmite’s Majestic L'Incomparable Diamond Necklace. Then, he must have got into the control room and opened all the cages. I’m guessing his next step was to snatch the jewels.

[A chimpanzee runs by wearing a shirt that reads: I had a WILD time at the Albuquerque Zoo!]

JOSEPHINE: How do we know the diamonds are still in the zoo?

[A komodo dragon crashes by tangled up with a squeaky vendor cart that is covered in pinwheels and zoo pennants].

ZOO KEEPER: Because when the cages open, the front entrance locks down, which means the criminals are still inside.

[A warthog charges by with a full mouth of churros].

JOSEPHINE: Okay, Ill ride to the front [she leaves on HAROLD THE OSTRICH].

[A giraffe runs by on fire, the ZOO KEEPER reaches for a fire extinguisher behind him and douses out the animal].

ZOO KEEPER: Okay, that should fix that pain in your neck.

[A river otter dashes out from his pool holding one of the burglar’s dropped guns. He fires wildly around, but the recoil tosses him back and forth across the zoo. He clicks the empty gun, looks down the barrel, throws it away, and scampers off].

CRIMINAL [points a gun at ZOOKEEPER]: Hold it right there, Zoo Keeper.  I’ve got the necklace, and I’m aiming to scale that wall and get out of here alive.

[ZOO KEEPER picks up passing boa constrictor and throws it at CRIMINAL. It wraps himself around him and the ZOO KEEPER takes the diamond necklace and gun away].

JOESPHINE [over zoo intercom]: Jim, the police have arrived.  The duchess and partygoers have been evacuated safely. We’ve caught the monkey and all of the criminals except one. And we haven’t recovered the necklace yet. Be careful.

ZOO KEEPER [pushes intercom button on pole]: Don’t worry, Josephine. I’ve caught the thief. And he’s learned… that sometimes a boa constrictor can be a diamond-back! Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha!
