Project #5 - R+D: Written Synthesis & Mood Board
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continental Air commenced its operations in July of 1934 under the South Western Division of Varney Speedlines. In 1937, the airline changed its name from "Varney Air Transport" to "Continental" to reflect the vision of its CEO at the time, Robert F. Six, who envisioned the airline expanding throughout the United States. The company was headquartered in El Paso, Texas, and prioritized airmail services to Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Later, Varney Speedlines extended its routes to Nevada, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Over time, the company also introduced transportation services for passengers, using a range of aircraft models. Some of the notable airliners included the Lockheed Model 9 Orion (single-engine, six passengers), the Lockheed Electra Junior (twin engine, six passengers), the Lockheed Lodestar (radial engine, eighteen passengers), and the Boeing 707 Aircraft (189 passengers). Over the course of more than 70 years of operation, the airline has merged with multiple commercial airline services, including Pioneer Airlines in 1955, Texas International Airlines in 1982, and assets of Frontier and New York Air in 1986. In 1987, Continental became the largest airline company in the United States. However, disagreements between the airline and workers of Texas Air Corporation, as well as acquired debt and multiple bankruptcies throughout the 1980s and 1990s, caused the company to struggle financially, leading to a decrease in flight routes, reduced seating capacity, and continuous employee layoffs. Continental eventually merged with United Airlines in 2012.
When establishing a marketing objective for Continental Airlines, one must consider the company's past bankruptcy. In the 1990s, before the company merged with United Airlines, a marketing campaign was launched to improve its reputation. The marketing objectives included four main areas: market, financial, product, and people. To establish a stronger presence in major cities like Newark, Houston, and Cleveland, the company aimed to target mainly businesspeople. To tackle financial issues, Continental eliminated unprofitable flights and aimed to increase the availability of desired flights. Additionally, the company remodeled the customer experience to be more welcoming and pleasant, while prioritizing accurate departure and arrival times. The employment sector received the most significant overhaul, with layoffs occurring to improve the distribution of finances across the company. These measures were necessary due to the company's history of mergers, bankruptcy, and financial debt. Continental Airlines had several goals and objectives, all aimed at providing excellent passenger and transportation services and expanding the airline's reach throughout the United States. One of these goals was to train employees for long-term careers, with education on understanding the market, increasing revenue, improving the product - including efficient transportation and customer service - and transforming the corporate culture. Overall, Continental strived to improve its services and grow its business while prioritizing the development of its employees.
The main competitors of Continental are other airlines across the United States, such as Air Canada, American, Lufthansa, Emirates, and Delta. Although, less popular modes of transportation including Greyhound (bus transportation), Amtrak (train transportation), and cars also pose competition. Due to the emergence of innovative technologies during the 2020 pandemic, resources like Zoom and Microsoft Teams have made it easier for employees to connect with employers online, causing a decrease in business travels.
In the past, the airline's advertisements targeted businessmen who frequently traveled within the United States and internationally. To cater to this affluent business clientele, Continental provided luxury amenities such as an on-plane pub named the "Sky Pub" and lounge on flights to Chicago, Houston, and Denver. Additionally, Continental offered a variety of snacks and meal options, as well as drinks, which were no longer provided by their competitors. Initially, Continental aimed to make air travel more affordable for the average American middle-class family and also targeted these groups with flights to popular family-centered destinations, such as California or Orlando.
When reviewing the assumptions made about Continental Airlines and its services, some people may perceive the company as providing basic or cheap services. This is in contrast to the company's previous image of being patriotic and pro-American from the 1940s and into the late 60s. The name "Continental" can also be associated with popular hotel chains' continental breakfast, which is also perceived as basic and cheap. Continental Airlines also faces significant difficulties in balancing the cost of flights with rates and providing good services, which can compromise the company's image and make it appear unfocused, unserious, and unprepared. This can drive away the targeted audience and clientele of the company.
Continental Airlines offers affordable airfare to destinations worldwide, prioritizing exceptional service at every point of contact with guests. Continental Airlines is committed to delivering on its promise of providing an exceptional flying experience. To ensure this, the airline offers free meals with multiple options, prepared by professional chefs who tailor the menu to the flight destination, taking into account the local culture. With over 2400 daily departures to five different continents, Continental Airlines provides passengers with headphones, pillows, wool blankets, and amenity kits before take-off, depending on the type of flight. Additionally, Continental Airlines is the first commercial airline to offer satellite-based Wi-Fi on international flights, enabling streaming TV on the seat-back screens. Every seat also comes with charging ports for enhanced convenience.
Continental Airlines went through several rebranding phases throughout its operation. In the 1930s and 1940s, the company positioned itself after the Great Depression and during America's involvement in World War II as a patriotic business that was proud of the American spirit. Their color scheme was mainly red, white, and blue, with illustrations of their planes and American iconography, and a logo featuring an American bald eagle. In the 1960s-1970s, the company shifted away from bold patriotism and into a more serious, muted branding that aimed to be more corporate and sophisticated to attract a business clientele. The eagle logo was replaced with the jet stream, reflecting the company's goal of transporting people to international destinations quickly and efficiently. The color scheme was primarily gold, black, white, and gray, but eventually incorporated other color palettes such as blue, green, and red to appeal more to the average middle-class family. In the 1970s-1980s, the company aimed for a more playful and friendly look to attract its targeted clientele. The minimalism of this period was intended to appear more approachable and welcoming.
Continental Airlines' "Must-Haves" include ensuring that passengers arrive at their desired destinations on time with their luggage, maintaining on-time arrival and departure schedules, advertising cost-friendly travel, and providing exceptional customer service throughout the entire flight experience. Additionally, the airline should have attractive branding with a clean, modern logo, and a cohesive brand identity. Management ought to demonstrate leadership by fostering a clean and collaborative team environment and promoting positive attitudes among staff and employees. Continental Airlines cannot afford to have undesirable flights and fails to attract clients by maintaining an inefficient daily flight schedule with too many flights going to the same destination.

Foreign Matter
It is no secret that my favorite grocery store is Trader Joe’s. Sure, Whole Foods comes in a close second, but TJ’s is just my vibe. I love the laid back atmosphere, free of pretense and full of happy, adventurous shopping. They’re keen to keep bringing in foods and spices that most other groceries would never touch.
Unfortunately, we will probably never have one here in Amarillo. While they continue to add new stores (there are currently 564 stores in 43 states), they have their standards, tending to open in educated, upper-middle-class neighborhoods. We just don’t have enough people here who fit that demo.
So, whenever I travel, I go prepared with a huge cooler and a stack of Trader Joe’s reusable shopping bags. If Dallas, Albuquerque, or Oklahoma City are on my return trip, then I stop for a major shopping expedition. Believe me, I am not the only one. Many TJ’s fans who live in places that will never have one are just like me, and TJ’s knows it. Why add too many stores when people are willing to go to this extreme just to patronize you?
Tumblr media
Trader Joe’s has been around since 1967 in Pasadena California. It was purchased by Aldi Nord (“North”) in 1979. And if you recognize that name, you should. It’s just that the Aldi stores we see in the US (which admittedly have many similarities, but different price points and target market) are owned by Aldi Sud (“South”). Both are German companies, and were once one big company until a rift developed between the brothers who owned it. They split into two at that point, so at best we can say that TJ’s and Aldi are cousins.
Given my love affair with TJ’s, it should come as no surprise that I have been known to include them in essay exam questions (wink wink, nudge nudge), incorporating their very cool podcast and other materials. This is a company that does exceptionally little advertising, adamantly refuses to allow online shopping, and will never have self-check lanes. It’s all about the shopping experience, and for this marketing prof, a company that is rich with marketing lessons.
But all has not been well with TJ’s this summer, because they have suffered through five product recalls. And they are odd ones, ranging from items that “may contain” rocks, insects, and metal. Ouch. Once that kind of news hits the airwaves and social media, it can become a public relations nightmare.
Roughly 85% of TJ’s items are private-label goods, meaning they are manufactured and packaged under contract by a different company. TJ’s doesn’t make anything; they just authorize its manufacture and labeling. It’s a challenge to find other-branded items in the store outside of the beer and wine section. It is these external providers who are the ones with quality control issues.
And yet TJ’s bears the brunt of the messaging, as well as responsibility for controlling the flow of response. That’s no small task.
None of these recalls is going to keep me from shopping at Trader Joe’s, but they might deter others, especially those who may not be quite so loyal as I am. Let’s face it, recalls are a black eye, whether you are at fault or not. How you handle that recall will help define your future. It starts with pulling all of the items that “may contain” said foreign matter, and then allowing for no-questions-asked refunds.
That’s only the beginning though. How do you begin to assure shoppers that they will be safe shopping there? Remember, we’re talking about food, something we put in our mouths. And what we put in our mouths is sacred. I liken meal preparation and eating to a spiritual experience. That is perfectly consistent with the religious training I received as a youth, that our bodies are temples and to be respected as such. Now why would I want to risk ingesting rocks, insects, and metal?
Given that TJ’s only uses Pinterest and Instagram on social media, along with their podcast and printed newsletter called The Fearless Flyer, they do not have many channels of communication. It’s so much easier when you leverage all of the socials, because you can broadcast to millions with a few clicks and taps.
In fact, TJ’s presence on Insta is predominantly fan pages that get as much traction as the corporate page, with people reviewing new products, offering recipe advice, and the like. That’s all great in terms of free word-of-mouth, but Trader Joe’s never gets to take the microphone on those pages, only their own.
Lastly, TJ’s could consider finding new vendors for some of its private label products, especially if a track record of recalls were to be established. Even still, this is no small task, because extensive vetting must then be completed. Existing vendors were chosen after thorough product testing in the first place.
I’ll be watching, TJ’s. You’re not at risk of losing me, but you cannot ignore these matters. Five black eyes in a little more than a month is a bad look. Here’s to righting this ship and sailing boldly into the future.

Doing More With Less
The American mindset has long been one of manifest destiny. Whether pillaging and plundering the land and people as we expanded westward, or with firms today in the corporate capitalist era, it is a “take no prisoners” philosophy. Bigger is better, and More is always better than Less.
And for better or worse, it has helped propel us into wealthiest nation status. Investors dig it.
But not all companies buy into it, and oddly enough, have even prospered by going against the flow. Call it salmoning or whatever, these companies—albeit few—are swimming upstream when everyone else is heading to the ocean.
There is probably no better example of this than Trader Joe’s, the cult-popular grocery chain headquartered in Monrovia California that has 569 stores in the US. Its smallish stores—by today’s standards—stock only about 4000 SKUs, a far cry from the 45,000 available at larger modern supermarkets.
Trader Joe’s, which is owned by Germany’s Aldi Nord, bullishly proclaims its “Less Is More” tag line whenever it can. It’s also a take-it-or-leave-it statement as well, but thus far, it has paid off handsomely, with sales of US$16.5 billion. With about 50,000 employees, each worker generates US$330,000 in sales.
It was during COVID that TJ’s operating mantra was put to the test. Most of its competitors, including first-cousin Aldi (owned by Germany’s Aldi Sud), boosted their online presence, with many also offering curbside pickup and/or delivery. Trader Joe’s wanted nothing of that.
Tumblr media
And that is because the company firmly believes its brand is the experience, and you cannot replicate that experience anywhere outside of its stores. You either shop there, or forget it. Given that its stores are small by design and often in or near shopping centers, the addition of order pickers and delivery vehicles would unnecessarily clutter the whole space. That, of course, would help ruin the experience on which TJ’s hangs its hat.
Their product assortment is also ever-shifting, reflecting a heavy emphasis on seasonal products (pumpkin is king right now, but you better hurry, because once those products are gone, you’re out of luck until next year). The company is also dedicated to innovation, something that keeps people coming back (side note: their plant-based spinach ravioli is to die for). Other items rotate through availability, meaning that every time you go to TJ’s, its equal parts shopping and discovery.
You never know what you’ll find, again, because it is part of the experience.
With 80% of their products being private label—meaning TJ’s contracts with companies to manufacture them and put a TJ’s marque on them—it leads to higher profit margins. Typical nationally-branded grocery items often have a 20-22% margin, which, after overhead is deducted, leaves a slim 1-2% profit margin for most other grocers.
Their laid-back nautical-themed atmospherics, complete with friendly employees who are paid to answer customer questions, give advice, and walk them to the right product, reinforce the experience. And employees will even open an item to let you try before you buy, whenever that is possible.
Their “less is more” strategy also applies to its marketing, which is centered primarily on a podcast, Instagram, and a monthly in-store newsletter called the Fearless Flyer. The store has such loyal customers that fan-based Instagram accounts have popped up that showcase products and recipes. Otherwise, their marketing efforts focus on reinforcing the message, which is to come to the store.
Making matters somewhat complicated is TJ’s resistance to reckless expansion. It routinely receives hundreds of requests each year from people imploring them to build a store near them, but it is just not going to happen. They would rather people like me travel prepared with an ice chest and freezer bag so that when we are near a TJ’s store (which for me would be OKC, Dallas, Albuquerque, or Santa Fe, all four or more hours away), we load up. And I do. Heck, three weeks ago I spent $200 at one of the Dallas stores.
Adding glitter to the scene, TJ’s devotees even collect their city and state reusable shopping bags that are sold in-store for $1. Look on eBay and you’ll see what I mean. Once we figured this out, we started selling off our collection. My wife sold two Oklahoma bags for a total of $98. Not a bad ROI. As a result, we routinely buy several in each TJ’s state we visit. Even if they don’t sell, we use them for shopping, or as gift bags.
All of which illustrates that, for every glowing generalization I or anyone else makes, there are exceptions, and Trader Joe’s has hit pay dirt by doing less. There is always the possibility of finding a pot of gold far out on the tails of the customer distribution.
And that is a destiny that Trader Joe’s has made manifest.
