The House Select Committee investigating the Capitol riot on January 6 played video footage showing that many far-right commentators promoted plans for a protest on the day of the insurrection, after former-President Donald Trump said it would be “wild”.

The Select Committee played video evidence showing that after Mr. Trump called on his supporters to come to Washington on 6 January 2021, the day that Congress certifies the Electoral College results, many far-right commentators saw the then-president’s words as a call to arms.

The Select Committee played a montage of numerous far-right commentators including InfoWars owner Alex Jones, YouTube commentator Tim Pool and others urging people to come to the nation’s capital.

“He is now calling on we the people to take action and show our numbers”, Mr. Jones said at the time in a video.

“We’re going to only be saved by millions of Americans moving to Washington, occupying the entire area, if necessary storming right into the Capitol”, right-wing commentator Matt Bracken said.

“This is going to be a Red Wedding going down on January 6,” YouTuber Salty Crackers said in one video.

Mr. Pool, for his part, said that January 6 could likely be the former-President’s “last stand”.

“And it's a time when he has specifically called on his supporters to arrive in DC. That's something that may actually be the big push. Trump supporters need to say this is it. It's now or never”, he said.

The term “Red Wedding” is a reference to the television show Game of Thrones, wherein a mass slaughter takes place at a wedding.

“The point is that Trump's call to Washington reverberated powerfully and pervasively online,” Representative Jamie Raskin, a member of the Select Committee, said. Mr. Raskin said that the Committee interviewed a former Twitter employee who explained the effects Mr. Trump had on the platform.

“The employee testified that Twitter considered adopting a stricter content moderation policy, after President Trump told the proud boys to stand back and stand by from the lectern at the September 29 presidential debate, but Twitter chose not to act,” Mr. Raskin said.

Ship of Dreams - Chapter 2

When the driver brings the car to a stop, Alex waits for his father to get out of the vehicle first before he follows.  Alex dons his hat as he looks up at the gargantuan ship awaiting them.  It’s admittedly one of the most fantastic things he’s ever seen. Honestly, he’d be thrilled to be on her maiden voyage, if he wasn’t spending every waking moment dreading the prenuptial performance expected of him.  The Evans family estate has flourished in recent years while the Manes’ money dwindled, and somewhere along the way Alex’s father and Isobel’s mother decided that a match between their children was just the “picture perfect” matchmaking that their high society lives needed--blending the “old money” families to bring benefit to both. This whole voyage is nothing but an excuse to flaunt the arrangement as if anyone who knows anything isn’t already well aware that this deal is all but set in stone between their meddling parents.

Neither family has been thrilled by Alex and Isobel’s apparently lackluster performances as besotted betrotheds.  His father is clearly under the impression that if Alex and Isobel are confined to the same ship they’ll have to start spending more time together.  Alex fights a smile of amusement as he realizes that they chose literally the biggest ship in the ocean as the “trap” to put him and Isobel together.  Instead, Alex forces a frown as he turns toward his father, who’s greeting Noah Bracken as he exits the Evans’ car.  

“I don't see what all of the fuss is about,” Alex says. “It doesn't look any bigger than the Mauritania .”

“You can be blasé about some things, Alex,” Max calls as he helps Isobel out of the car, “but not about Titanic!” Alex takes a deep breath as they come over to meet them.  “It's over a hundred feet longer than the Mauritania and far more luxurious!”

“So this is the ship they say is unsinkable,” Isobel says as she looks past them to take it in with a bemused expression.

“It is unsinkable,” Noah says simply.  

“God himself could not sink this ship!” Jesse adds.

As the two leave to arrange for all their belongings to be brought on board, Alex tries in vain to invent an excuse to move away from Max and Isobel.  Isn’t it bad enough that he has to marry her when this voyage is over? Can’t he at least avoid the obligation of awkward, prim conversation with his fiancee and her brother? Not to mention how badly he’d like to avoid the continuation of Noah Bracken’s thinly veiled threats.  For all his ability to charm the majority of the social elite, Alex finds that Noah only ever manages to remind him that he’s nothing more than a pawn in his father’s much larger game.  

Alex gazes at the crowd around them as they move to board the ship.  The papers are all referring to Titanic as the “Ship of Dreams,” but at that moment, for Alex, it feels more like a floating prison, taking him back to America in chains.

Back in the day when I was trying to play with my gender but I hadn't realized I was transmasc yet, I brought photos of Kate Bracken from her role as Alex in Being Human to a hairstylist and said "give me this." I had shoulder length hair at the time. He refused because it "wasn't feminine enough." I showed him pictures of a cis woman and it WASN'T FEMININE ENOUGH????? I tried taking those same pics to another hairstylist and he refused to do it because "men wouldn't like [me] anymore"... so in the end I just did it myself at home.

So weird how much hairdressers project on people, lmao it's my hair??

I LOVE Alex, and these books kind of consumed my life as a kid!

Slated trilogy by Teri Terry

Pretty much the early Fostered books are TDM + Slated smushed together <3 I was such a Slated girlie, lmao

Books 4-6 just don't have any vibes, lmao!!! so no comps there!

Moth Work and Feeding Habits should have comps in theory, but I actually haven't personally read anything like them (though I'm sure books exist out there, I just don't know!). They're so niche in a way that it's hard to find a comp, lol! They are very much both like each other though!

Lore by Alexandra Bracken

I realize now that this is just me expressing how much I love and support Alex's writing lmao, but this was the FIRST fantasy book I've read in a loooong time, and I read it coinciding with when I started SV, so it was super helpful for understanding the genre, especially since it's also contemp. fantasy and takes place in NYC! I'm thinking of re-reading it or getting the audiobook too since I'd like to revisit it!

Bitterblue by Kristen Cashore

This is an old favourite that I read when I was 12 or so, but I LOVE THIS BOOK! It's literally... literary fiction lmao, but fantasy for teenagers! I've read it so many times that I don't know the exact number. This is more high fantasy I believe, BUT the structure is sooo Seventh Virtue--lots of mini plots, larger cast of characters, very slow and ambling but in a fun way. If I could write this book, I would! Bitterblue as a character reminds me a lot of Reeve, haha. I just re-read this book in the fall, and I’m going to listen to it again because I just love it so much!

Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

New inspo for me since I read them in the fall, but I LOVE THESE BOOKS SM!!! I'm so late to the train, lmao, but the Netflix adaptation of Shadow & Bone initially prompted me to write SV, so it's only fitting that I love these books! They both share bird imagery in common, which I obviously love, and there's also an ensemble cast. I want to actually read this book since I listened to the fabulous audiobook, but I'd like to get a stronger grasp on Leigh Bardguo's craft which was so good it made me insecure for the first time in years, lmao yaaaas <3

A continuation of my AU where Michael is adopted by the Evans’ instead of Max. 

Based on RNM 1x11. It's the night of the gala. Max and Michael are trapped in the bunker, but Alex rescues them. The girls work together to solve a mystery about one of their friends. The fourth alien is revealed.

Notes:

One of my favorite chapters to write!!! The Michael/ Max conversation is full of references to their differing childhoods. They finally talk like in canon. Michael finally apologizes for throwing Alex in Max's face. Max talks about him and Alex. Michael talks about him and Liz. A lot of lines are flipped from canon.

Also, Alex is at the gala in this 'verse. He is the one who figures out the boys might be trapped in the bunker and he is the savior. He is also present at the gala later when they discover Noah. Alex says a lot of significant lines borrowed from 1x13 and 2x08.

And yes, this chapter title is inspired by Max and Alex being at the museum together for the first time since their first kiss there!

Review: Silver in the Bone (Alexandra Bracken)

I really dug this one.

Tamsin Lark is a Hollower. She takes jobs finding (and stealing) old artifacts for those with the means to reward her, and she and her brother Cabell have managed to create a life for themselves off those spoils. When a job comes up to find a legendary ring for a wealthy sorceress, Tamsin isn't the only one interested; Emrys, her rival, seems to think he also has what it takes to find it and reap the benefits. What follows is a tale of other worlds, betrayal, magic, and family - in a form Tamsin would have never imagined existed for herself. The lore of this one is such a wonderful aspect of it and what I have to mention right off the bat. This is inspired by Arthurian legend and features some Arthurian things, but overall, it's such a neat way of playing with that legend without leaning too heavily on it. Avalon, the Lady of the Lake, Bedivere and the knights, Arthur himself; they're all mentioned, but they aren't necessarily the main focus of the story at large. I loved the sorceresses and priestesses, the way brotherhood is turned to sisterhood, and the larger magic system at play. And I truly, truly loved Tamsin. She's a flawed character but only because of what she went through; her and Cabell and their story is so interesting in how different that past made them from each other. Sometimes you just connect with a character, and I really did with Tam here. This one also really nails atmosphere, especially in the real world but also when we get to Avalon. I loved the spooky November vibes - they kept me reading on at the beginning and really hooked me into the story. Sometimes, when we got to Avalon, I had trouble situating myself in that new world, but it was more of just a taste thing more than anything. I really liked how Alex wrote the real world, so I spent some time hoping we'd get back to it. It made the plot drag a little in the middle for me, but not enough to make me not want to pick this up when I wasn't reading it. I thought about it all the time. Overall, though, I loved the story, I loved the writing, and I loved the found family/sisterhood/friendship at the heart of things. This beats out Lore for me by a good bit, and pretty much reaches the level of Passenger or TDM for my fave Bracken book.
