Taking advantage of the fact the cinema is now only a 5 minute walk from my sofa and going to watch another film this weekend.
This time - The Mario movie
.... yeah the critics are right, this things 6/10 at best.
So, before i went... i set my expectations as rock bottom as i could.
Mario, as a franchise, is hardly known for its complex plots. Illumination, as a studio, have made Just-Fine film after Just-Fine film. They dont make Good films, they make Okay films that entertain kids & sell a tonne of merch.
So like, i always expected this film to be a 7/10 at best
It... failed to hit what i would consider a 7.
The story is fine. But didnt really work for me. It feels... basic. The dialogue is Fine. Awkward in places but ehh.
Humour completely fell flat on me. I think the movie got 2 laughs out of me, and an internal giggle as i mentally went "so long, gay bowser". I said on my post about the D&D movie that American humour usually doesnt work on me - and yeah, in this case it really didnt work on me.
I cant fault most of the visuals though - its visually stunning. Maybe some of the best semi-realistic 3d animation ive seen? Like, i really cannot fault the actual animators here, and you can tell they really really tried to make the best product they could. I think the biggest gripe i have is Peachs anatomy looks a bit... odd?? But really, thats the only complaint i have about the visuals of the movie.
I definitely feel like all this movies best bits... were in the trailers. You kinda miss the underlying story if you just see the trailers, but you really do see like... most of the set pieces. I really dont like it when films do this.
The movie uses real world pop music. It's bad. Every use of it kinda took me out of it. It doesn't make sense for the movie. And many of the choices kinda made me scratch my head because I couldn't see why they'd chosen THAT song?? Go watch Shrek and Shrek 2 and learn how to put pop music in an animated film in a way that Works ಠ_ಠ.
I usually kinda find myself engrossed in any film i see in the cinemas, regardless of the quality. Like, I enjoyed Rise of the Skywalker in cinema! I had a lot of fun with that film! Is it a good story? Not really! But i dont regret seeing it in the cinema.
I just felt "meh" throughout this entire film. I felt "meh" upon leaving.
Everything else though...
..... Watch it on TV when it inevitably airs around the holiday season or something, its just not worth going out of your way to watch.
