hi, i just saw your tags on the west side story hc & i’m screaming at the idea of sondheim fan Steve, it’s just. so perfect. like eddie survives so they get to go see into the woods in ‘87 & Steve is ENAMOURED. & *spoilers* when they kill off the narrator eddie is like !!! (Gleeful). also the pain of relatability in Steve with the baker having a father who’s uncomfortable with babies & a mother who regrets having children. oh and like they are both laughing at the into the woods theme cause they literally went “into the woods” in the upside down, they get such a kick out of it.
& on a completely different note, just. the idea of steve relating to “Something’s coming” in west side story because of the upside down disappearing then coming back into his life (i hc that his singing voice sounds kinda similar to ‘61 Tony). like the sense of hope and growing menace at the same time. Aaaaaa 💔
anyway long story short, thank you for bringing more sondheim Steve thoughts into my life & your tags are always a blessing to see! ❤️
HELLO hi I love Nothing But The Dead and Dying SO much it's quickly becoming one of my favorite ST fics. YES thank you for this ask I love it and I have MANY Sondheim Fan Steve thoughts. Manic Theater Kid Eddie finding out Steve likes musicals and now it's They're Thing, Eddie is going to MAKE it They're Thing damn it. I love the idea of them seeing Into The Woods together, Eddie grabbing Steve and shaking his shoulder when the narrator dies because he didn't know you could do that!!!! They watch the full PBS productions together. In the universe where Eddie becomes a famous musician he does a rendition of Last Midnight on MTV Unplugged but in the "canon" universe maybe he convinces the CC guys to incorporate into their set around his and Steve's anniversary. I think the first Sondheim musical Steve saw was Gypsy which his mom took him to when he was little. (Years later Steve, who still has a complicated relationship with his mom, will think huh that was kinda a fucked up musical to bring your kid to...) He listens to some full original cast recordings but mainly found songs he liked through compilation albums, and it became a game he (and later Robin and Eddie) would play to track down what musical the song came from. And I think he cries at the end of WSS every time because no matter how many times he sees it part of him always thinks Tony and Maria are going to make it :') Thank you again for this ask and for your beautiful writing <3
