How I landed an industry job straight out of my life sciences PhD, without doing a post-doc

In less than 7 weeks I’ll be defending my dissertation as a final step in my PhD in Cancer Biology, and yesterday I accepted a Scientist position at a local biotechnology company. And best part: I didn’t have to do the dreaded post-doc first! Which is pretty rare for our field (but I hope it’ll be more and more common for PhD’s going into industry).

I promised I would talk about the process here, and I hope that anyone who’s aiming for the same path can walk away with some tips or at least with a familiarity of the process.

The main points I want to get across:

Network network network. You can probably just stop reading here, because this job came about all through networking. I was basically head-hunted--someone in my network (a program alumnus) contacted me on LinkedIn to ask if I wanted to apply for a position on the team she directs. So set up your LinkedIn account, keep it up to date, and use it to actively network. At the very least you should connect with the alumni in your program as you all have something in common already, and since they’re out and about in the field they would be great resources for informational interviews and job referrals.

My expertise and career goals matched the position. No brainer, of course. Even if I wasn’t contacted by the company, I would only be applying to companies I qualified for (so companies dealing with cancer since I’m my PhD is in Cancer Bio). My lab mate, for example, was finishing up his PhD in Nutritional Sciences but was applying to cancer companies with no result, because it just wasn’t the candidate those companies were looking for. My expertise was also probably what got that director’s attention in the first place and the reason she reached out. She was basically willing to wait 7 months for me (from job posting to my final start-date) because I was her ideal candidate, and not just based off my expertise alone, but our personalities matched too. She told me “we communicate well” aka our work personalities match. I know you can’t change who you are obviously, but getting along with your manager goes a long way.

That being said, employers/PIs are flexible with start dates for PhD candidates. I applied to this position 6 months before I had my defense date set and when I only knew a ballpark of “sometime in the summer”. And then during my interview process I had to keep pushing that potential start-date back and back and back. But the company understood this. So as a PhD candidate you could start applying 6 months before your expected end-date (even if it’s still a moving target), or even months earlier for post-docs (which are much more flexible than industry positions). In general, you should start looking 1 year before your finish date to see what’s out there.

It was also good luck/timing. If I had graduated earlier than the job posting, then I never would’ve had this opportunity. I also only added her to my LinkedIn network because I went to a lunch seminar where she gave a talk about working in industry. So small things that ultimately made a huge difference. Some you can’t control, but some (like going to that lunch) are definitely opportunities to seize.

I was low “flight risk”. Companies are always afraid their employees will leave the company/city for greener pastures, and that’s more common in “less popular” places to live, like the southwest desert where I’m located. But I’m from here, my grad school is here, my family’s here--so the company is making the assumption I’m not going to just up and go any time soon. You obviously can’t control where your family chooses to settle down, but you may be able to strategically choose your grad school based off of its proximity to potential companies.

And lastly, in my experience, PhD’s with no post-doc in biotech industry should expect an annual salary somewhere between $75-95k (depending on the company and cost of living), with benefits.

Ok, my full story under cut if you’d like to know more about the process I went through:

It all started when a program alumnus (or alumna, if you’re picky about your latin) named RF talked at a lunch seminar to students in my program in Feb 2019. I was really interested in her company and knew she would be a great network to have, so I emailed her later to thank her, and then added her on LinkedIn.

Fast forward to January of this year (2020) when RF messaged me on LinkedIn out of the blue asking me how close I was to graduating and if I would be interested in a position at her company. I think she wanted someone asap (so not me, I thought), but we talked more about my project, and she said she’d keep in touch. In February, she messaged me again saying a position opened up on her team and she wanted to see if I would like to apply. I said heck yes (or the more formal version), and sent in my application, with the expectation that I would be defending sometime in the summer. I also put her as my job referral and messaged her afterwards to let her know my application went through (with the hopes that maybe she could fast-track it through HR, which I think she did).

In the meantime, I messaged (also on LinkedIn) another program alumnus I knew (our time overlapped a few years) who currently works with RF and we chatted on the phone about what he does at work, how he likes it there, etc. Basically an informational interview (and also to catch up as colleagues). I was also hoping he’d put in a good word for me with RF and can attest I’m a decent human being and all that.

2 weeks later, I had a phone interview with RF, and I was super nervous going into it. I even practiced pages and pages of answers of common interview questions for a week straight. But to my surprise she opened the call with “I already know a lot about you from your CV, LinkedIn profile, and also your PhD training because we’re from the same program, so this is your chance to ask me questions!” And I was like, uhhhh awesome! The only thing she wanted to know about me was when I could start, and at that moment in time I was gunning for a July/Aug defense date.

(I also emailed her and HR afterwards to ask them whether they could match my salary expectation, which I had researched well beforehand for what was common in the field for my position and experience, and they said they could.)

We then set up the next round of interviews for April with a colleague of RF’s who used to be in the same team but now directs her own, and RF’s boss (these would have normally been on-site, but I did them over the phone bc Covid). I again messaged my friend at the company asking if he had any tips.

And then disaster struck! The company’s HR called me a week before those scheduled interviews to tell me the company had ordered a hiring freeze due to Covid and the effect it was having on the economy. Absolute bummer :( :( :(

So I then applied for a few more positions here and there, including some post-docs (which I really didn’t want to do). I got 2 rounds of interviews for a Scientist position at another local company, and as of today I still haven’t heard anything from them. oh well.

Then in June I finally heard back from RF’s company saying the hiring freeze has been lifted and whether I’m still interested? Uh, heck yes! So we continued with those 2 phone interviews I had originally scheduled back in April. They both went really well. But I still continued to apply to other positions in the meantime because I wanted to have as many options as I could.

Then 2 weeks ago (July 7) I got THE call: they wanted to offer me the position! :D

Only problem was, we needed to settle on a start-date. They of course wanted me to start like, yesterday, but my PI wanted to push back my original defense date of Aug 28 one more week to Sept 4, and also wanted me to focus on any dissertation edits for 2 weeks after that. So my earliest start-date would be Sept 21. If you remember, my defense date shifted from “sometime in the summer” to “July/August” to now September, so I was really worried the company wouldn’t accept this. I nervously waited 2 weeks for someone to call me back, and in my head I kept thinking, “I blew it I blew it”. I even sent in a job application to another company in that time.

But RF finally called me and said hey, no problem, we can do that! She told me she was willing to wait because I really was her perfect candidate (I had all the experience she wanted, and she said we communicated well aka our work-personalities matched). She had also just recently hired another graduate from our program, who is also a friend of mine, so she knew we would all mesh together very nicely.

And that’s the story folks! I’ll be starting the position remotely until it’s safe to return to the building again. They’re also working with my husband to see if he’s a good candidate for some of their other open positions (we’re both in the biotech field). We’re both super excited about this new chapter in our lives.

All this because I attended the lunch seminar RF talked at all last year and then added her on LinkedIn. When people talk about opportunities lurking behind every corner, they really did mean that.

On Job Transitions

And weird diurnal people.

This is my second day in a row running on 2 hours of sleep.

Unofficially I got the job! I am an adjunct instructor for Temple University here in Philadelphia. It’s ‘unofficial’ because I was welcomed in and ‘recommended for hire’ by the lab head before ever being directed to apply for anything and I can’t teach until HR gets me that university email address.

However, this means I’m getting 7am texts for 8 and 9am zoom meetings. Yesterday’s meeting was a bust, I couldn’t get in and the recording told me nothing I didn’t already discuss with the lab head in person. Today’s meeting is in 45 minutes and my phone woke me up at 7am this morning.

I went to bed at 5. Because my furlough at the IRS doesn’t begin until after this week ends.

And if anyone wants to ask why I’m taking a leave of absence in order to work this position, here’s why. Because the lab head begins his work day the same hour I go to sleep and like any professor expects me to be available at any time during his preferred schedule. Even after I told him I work until 1am.

This is another reason why I never went to grad school. I can only conform my schedule to diurnal weirdos so much before I just stop going to class/lab/work/etc. I slept through an entire term during my undergrad because all the classes were 8am only and I cannot physically do that more than a few weeks at a time.

Hopefully this nonsense stops when labs start. He has me teaching afternoons and nights

Youngjae waited a couple of days to email you; any longer than that, and he probably would’ve internally combusted because of all the anticipation.

In his head, the email went like this:

Thank you so much for talking with me and answering my questions at the exhibit the other day. I’m truly in awe of your knowledge of Renoir; I can’t imagine how much you know about other painters, as well. I really hope you weren’t just being nice when you offered to help me with my thesis because I would love for you to read over it. Would you want to meet up somewhere? Maybe for dinner?

I have to admit, I didn’t go to the museum just to see the exhibit. I saw you there on my first visit, and to be honest, I was immediately attracted to you. Meeting and speaking with you only solidified my feelings, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.

I applied for an internship there - yes, partly to be close to you. If I get hired, we could have a secret office romance. We could stay late to “work.” We could do our best to be professional around our co-workers when, really, we’re thinking about ripping --

Here’s how his email really went:

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk about the exhibit with me the other day. Should I send you my thesis? I understand if you’re too busy, but really, any notes would be greatly appreciated.

He sent it quickly, afraid that if he wrote any more, he would accidentally type out one (or more) of those thoughts swirling around in his head. That... would be bad. And very, very embarrassing.

Anyway!

Youngjae was expecting to hear back from you in a day or two; he figured you were pretty busy, and his thesis was definitely lowest on the totem pole of your responsibilities.

But after only twenty or so minutes, he got a notification on his phone.

New message Re: Youngjae - grad student from the museum

His brow furrowed in surprise, but he opened it almost immediately.

Sure, go ahead and send it! I’ll gladly read over it and send my thoughts - and any corrections if I see them, though I’m sure there won’t be many!

I’m so glad you liked the exhibit. I don’t always get to hear what people think of it, so thank you! If you come back, let me know. I can give you another tour if you’d like ;)

...Had -- had you just... Okay, was he imagining things, or had you just kind of flirted with him? Via email? I mean, you’d offered to give him another tour of the exhibit. You’d sent a winking smiley face. That was flirting, right?

So... Youngjae clicked on ‘reply’ and started typing out his own response.

Another tour? I would like that :) I have a feeling there’s a lot more I can learn from you.

Honestly, Youngjae had to applaud you for that response. It could mean you were waiting for his thesis or you were waiting for his next tour or both. No matter which one you really meant, his heart still beating just a little bit faster in anticipation.

The two of you spent the next few weeks emailing back and forth, and while the messages were mostly professional (since they had to do with Youngjae’s thesis and the Impressionist movement), there were a lot of flirtatious undertones. A lot of sentences tacked onto the end of an email which definitely toed the line. And a lot of winking smiley faces, mostly on your part.

Youngjae had come so close to just straight up asking you out more than a few times in these email exchanges, but the interview process for the museum internship was actually going really well. He figured he could wait a little while and just ask you out in person, at work.

When Youngjae received the call from the human resources department at the museum informing him he would be starting his internship the next day, it was all he could do not to send you an email sharing the good news. He wanted it to be somewhat of a surprise, though you actually may have known already. The two of you had mainly just talked about his thesis, so he wasn’t all that sure how much you were involved in the inner workings of the museum.

For the rest of the day and into the next morning, he kept going through different scenarios in his head. He imagined seeing you -- you seeing him -- for the first time. He would shoot you a half-smile, maybe a wink? You would smirk bashfully, probably. And then he would find a time and place to approach you privately. He would ask you out to lunch and-- why not? Dinner, too.

As Youngjae got off the bus at the museum stop, he let out a nervous but hopeful sigh. He was excited to see you and talk to you outside of the digital world, yes, but let’s not forget the main reason he was here: to work at an actual art museum. He would actually be putting his degree to good use, and that was something not many art students could say, to be quite honest.

There were a few other presumably new interns arriving at the same time, and Youngjae joined them, following them in through the main entrance and into the lobby.

A woman from HR, the employee who’d called him yesterday, greeted everyone and began a short speech about what they should expect during their internship here. They would be divided into different departments depending on their background and previous experience and whatnot, so really, this speech would do nothing to prepare them. They would learn everything they needed to know from their new bosses and co-workers.

Just then, a door next to the front desk opened, and museum employees started filing out to join the HR worker giving the speech. Youngjae’s eyes flitted around, searching for you.

He saw your hair first; you were walking next to someone, so he didn’t see the rest of you until you came to a stop about fifteen feet away from him. Youngjae’s heart skipped a beat, his stomach flipped anxiously, and he willed you to meet his eye.

You stood there for a few moments, listening politely... but then you started eyeing the new interns.

When your gaze landed on him, a smile tugged at his lips, just like he imagined it would. He was just about to wink, but then he realized your eyes had widened slightly.

And then you looked away from him almost immediately. He could see you take a deep breath, and you continued to avoid his gaze.

...What? What was going on? Why were you pretending not to know him?

Youngjae realized he hadn’t been paying attention because when he suddenly heard his name, he jumped a little in surprise.

“Yes?” he answered instinctively.

“Curating,” the HR woman stated, not even looking up from her clipboard.

Curating. He assumed she meant that was the department where he would be working, and his eyes immediately darted over to you.

You looked anxious. And you were still avoiding his gaze.

...Well, then. This would be interesting.

You heard the soft ding of your email notification, and you spun around in your desk chair, reaching out to shake your mouse and wake up your computer.

New interns starting today - meet in lobby ASAP.

Oh, fun! New interns!

You quickly locked your computer back up and sprung from your seat. Most of your co-workers were already on their way, so you fell into step with them, following them out into the museum lobby.

One of the ladies from HR was already talking to a small-ish group of young people, though you kind of zoned her out almost immediately. You would perk up if she assigned anyone to your department, of course, but you didn’t need to pay attention to anything else.

After a few moments, you lifted your gaze to take a look at the new guppies, wondering which ones would come under your wing for the next few months.

As you scanned the anxious but eager-looking interns, you couldn’t stop yourself from passing some quick judgments about their appearances. Tall, extremely well-dressed, very nervous, beautiful, too cool for school, Youngjae -- wait, what?!

Youngjae?!

Your eyes widened slightly, and you immediately averted your gaze.

Oh, god. Had you really just seen Youngjae? And not someone who looked like Youngjae?

Please let it be a lookalike, please let it be a lookalike, please let it --

“Choi, Youngjae,” your HR co-worker called out.

Damn it.

But then it got worse.

“Curating.”

WHAT?!

Oh, no. This was not good. Not good at all. Youngjae would be interning for you?! Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Before you knew it, the interns had been released into the wild, dispersing through the lobby and finding their new bosses.

Youngjae walked straight toward you.

Lord Almighty, he was even more good-looking than you remembered.

If you could have cursed out loud right now and not gotten fired (or at least a slap on the wrist), you would have.

“Hey --”

“Come with me,” you muttered, resisting the urge to reach out and grab his sleeve. You had to act normal until you got back to your office, and leading your new intern by his sleeve was not exactly normal.

Your shoes clacked loudly on the marble floor, Youngjae’s hurried footsteps trying to keep up with yours. You pushed through the employee door with a purpose and headed back to your office.

Once the two of you were safely inside, you closed the door as gently as you could. You certainly didn’t want to attract any attention.

“Y/N,” Youngjae began. You turned to see him taking a step toward you, and you instantly held your hand up to stop him.

“No,” you told him, finally meeting his eyes. His beautiful, sparkling, sweet eyes. They just made it that much more difficult for you to form coherent thoughts right now. So you took a deep breath, willing your brain (and your heart) to get a hold of itself. “Listen. I know -- I know we’ve been... we’ve been -- flirting. In our emails.”

A hopeful smile appeared on Youngjae’s lips, and you almost felt bad for what you were about to say.

Almost.

“But that has to stop here and now.”

“...What? Why?”

“Why?!” you chuckled. “Because you’re an intern now! I can’t -- you can’t -- we can’t!”

“But I’m just an intern!”

“No. Not just. You’re an intern. You’re basically an employee. My employee.”

Youngjae’s brow furrowed, and you could tell he desperately wanted to take a step toward you. But he resisted.

“Is there a rule that says --”

“I have a rule. I’m here for work, and that’s it. I can still help you with your thesis if you want me to, but nothing more.”

His brow furrowed even more, and damn it if you didn’t want to reach out and smooth it over with your fingers. But then he interrupted your thoughts by letting out a soft sigh.

“Okay, fine,” he murmured with a little nod.

Thank god. You’d been prepared to argue more, but Youngjae was smarter than you gave him credit for.

“No more flirting,” you proclaimed somewhat under your breath.

His gaze shifted, and he looked you right in the eye when he repeated, “No more flirting.”

You almost let out the biggest, longest sigh of relief. All in all, that hadn’t been as painful as you’d thought it would be. Youngjae had taken it pretty well.

So now you just had to get through the next three or so months with Youngjae as your intern. Youngjae, the guy you’d kind of, somewhat, somehow fallen for the first time you’d seen him. Youngjae, the guy you’d been emailing flirtatiously for the past few weeks.

...How hard could it be?

yesterday, during our academic staff meeting (a team of 5 usually, but one was absent) my supervisor went on a spiel about how our department’s organization needs some restructuring. she noted how in other departments, they have a lot more manpower that correlates to the amount of work that is needed. their workforce is also divided into specific functions. here in our department, everyone works from a-z in their own speciality. we have people who are burnt out/overworked and things fall through the cracks, and others who really shouldn’t have a job there (due to lack of duties). with the new CAO, i think they are working on restructuring our department and making progress on budgeting efficiently. she told us that if we find something better (directed mainly at me) to just go for it, and not feel the pressure to stay loyal to the company. she said hard work goes unnoticed and people won’t remember you for the good job you did, but for the mistakes you made. and at the end, to stay loyal to yourself.

she ended her little speech saying “okay i’ll need the last 10 minutes of the meeting to talk to connie”. my heart was pounding a little as the other two left, because i was brought back to old memories of 1 on 1 with my old boss that turned into a session of criticism. instead, it was a friendly conversation talking about what i’d like to in terms of career and if i’m applying for jobs in my field. i told her the truth- that i’m learning a lot here and i’d like to stay, but that i’m also networking in the tech field to get a taste of what’s out there. we talked about promoting me to the next level position (now that another girl on our team is leaving) and possibly incorporating some programming/tech/web development into my job description. i was really grateful for that. she noted how the postdocs, residents/doctors, and researchers that we work with all have mentors. however, the admin staff don’t get as much guidance on how to move up. she hopes she can provide that for us, especially because she feels we are hardworking. it’s awesome because the managers and director of HR are always looking out for the young people in our group to advance. they’ll promote us before anyone outside of our group, even though we probably aren’t as qualified haha. my supervisor has gotten criticism for promoting people who don’t know what they’re doing before (my current team). but i’m guessing that the benefits of helping her people outweigh a few criticisms. i’ll be meeting with my hr director tomorrow to see how to proceed with this.

march 11 is a very sensitive day for matt. it’s when he finds out whether or not he gets into residency. because he attended a carribean (foreign) medical school, the chances of matching into a residency program is considerably lower than US graduates. whereas about 95% of US grads match into a program right after they graduate, only about 50% of foreign grads do. those unmatched grads can work on strengthening their profile and attempt again the following year. statistics say its even harder the second time around. so i think he’s looking at around 40% which is pretty nervewracking. as we get closer to the date, the more anxious he is. he can’t think about anything past that date and is like in “depressed” (but not really) mode. he said he wants to sleep more and lost interest in fun things. when i brought up that his sex drive seems normal (as a joke) he said yeah he has selective symptoms haha. i’ve been trying to be supportive for him by taking him out and doing things.

this past weekend we were pretty sneaky and fun. on friday, i got out of work at 4pm and on my drive home, i was just like man, i have no plans tonight. i haven’t really gone out on friday nights for the past 6 months because i had class on saturday morning. so i was actually craving to do something. i went thrift shopping by myself and stopped by trader joes to buy a birthday gift and also picked up a package of salami and cheese. i took a pic of the salami and cheese and sent it to matt with a text “where my wine buddy at?”. he was at the gym when i texted him and i liked that he responded well to my spontaneity. he suggested a few places to go out to drink but i was like, how about wine in the backseat of your car and walk around at the mall LOL. i wanted something lowkey so i can just show up in a hoodie and jeans. so i parked my car at his place and he drove us to the mall, where i “pregamed” a little with wine before heading into the mall and getting uncle tetsu. we got cheesecake and then decided to eat a small dinner at din tai fung. it was yummy! then we went back into the car and chilled in the backseat with wine, salami and cheese, and my ipad with downloaded episodes of chefs table. after a bit, we decided to drive back to his house so that we weren’t parked in the parking lot drinking. we did more of the same thing in front of his place and got frisky. he ended up sneaking me into his room to do it lol. it was a struggle because he has a home security system called ring that notifies anyone who has the app when someone is on their property. he could only figure out how to turn off the garage camera, so we snuck through there. i used his restroom and then snuck into his room for a quickie and i had to leave at 2am because permits are required for street parking from 2-5am.

then on sunday, we had a double date with a college friend and her boyfriend that i met for the first time. it was a nice time but i wasn’t sure how much matt or the boyfriend were feeling it so the whole post hike “should we get food together” was a no. turned out matt actually really enjoyed hiking with them. he was talkative and made them laugh a few times too. i think i was a little anxious about him hanging out with my “friends” because i’d feel responsible if they didn’t get along. i attribute this to how david acted. there were a few times when i brought david out and would feel embarrassed or odd because he wouldn’t say much or looked uninterested etc. i’d feel anxious thinking if he would “behave” (like a child/not get moody) and not embarrass me. now i’m thinking that was his problem and not mine, or it just highlights our incompatibility. i was pretty quiet in his friend group too, because i felt our social circles were worlds apart and we didn’t know how to get along with each other’s friends/family. after the hike, we went to get donuts and dinner, and then parked outside of my house thinking of what to do next. we went from my car to his to chill in the backseat. it was maybe 8pm. we found beer lounge place that looked cool, but neither of us really wanted to drink as it was late and a sunday. instead we started making out and stopping every time a car passed by lol. i also got a phone call from my mom which also put a pause to the making out. anyway clothes reluctantly came off finally and i was wearing my reusable cloth pad (i was finishing up my period). i unbuttoned that to detach it from my undies and threw it on the seat, while noting that it smells like discharge and how it was pretty gross. lol. after a few seconds he said he could smell it too but we proceeded and had penetrative sex. he only lasted a few seconds and ended up coming in his hand. the semen spilled onto the car seat a little and i gave him my sock to wipe it off LOL. i told him if i was smarter, i would have told him to come on my pad. with the vaginal discharge and his cum everywhere, i said that we’re disgusting haha. he thought it was really hot.

anyway, after these two nights, he texted me thanking me on both days for being naughty/freaky, sleeping in his bed, eating din tai fung, enjoying backseat wine drinking etc with him. i like seeing him relaxed and happy during this stressful time and i enjoy being the reason for it.

August was fine. I spent time with mom & dad & there were moments. I made pants w mom, mom gave me a nice bob cut, i went to wegmans to eat in the cafeteria w mom sometimes & adele at other times, i passed my drivers test & got my wisdom teeth pulled out, & i did not work on my book. I moved into college & nneka had a lot of friend drama and i felt like am imposter in the irc bc black women should be free in this space without me watching but also they believe in many of the evil col*mbia things i cant think good things abt. I began classes & had a scare when i wasn’t supposed to sign up for my grad student class but i interviewed during office hours & it was fine. i now think honestly i am one of the better students but the class is kinda a mess. so are my other classes. surprisingly cc is very good & i enjoy my prof.

September was less fine but we did it. aside from classes, i am feeling more and less in tough w my femininity. like i present with longer hair now but feel like my body is really awful for ppl to interpret still, and is end up wearing a hat every other day. Mom called me last night & told me she was back from china, my grandparents are fine for now probly, and jimmie/alice’s dad d*ed. I don’t rly know how to process this information but jimmie liked my instagram post last night. that’s so awful.

Some good memories:

- i went to the ny art book fair with grace & we met emma there & looked at zines & claire came later & i was like wow these ppl who i don’t even know very well took time out of their day to b with me & then emma & i took the train back & i talked to emma abt anarchy & chinese folktales & daoism on the train ride back & also mia mingus on leaving evidence at some point but yea i rly liked sharing time with them on the ride back then i took a nap i shouldn’t have taken & left late to go to my first day of tutoring & ended up being 15 mins late bc the one train goes express on weekends but i stayed for 30 mins extra & got paid 100 for an hr!! i was standing in the elevator with two 50 dollar bills in my hand like??? what??? this is my life? rich ppl just have money to do whatever with ?????? also side note yesterday i taught her how to draw a circle given a center & radius without plotting a bunch of points from solving the equation 💩

- after the wow information session i went back home with em & we cooked noodles together & em told their roommates that there were so many leaks in the kitchen & they all came and gathered around a bundle of leeks on the cutting board & the wow info session had such good black sesame moon cakes bc they were home made & smth abt the freshness just makes them so 香 but yea it was so nice to talk to em & share some hugs & food & it rly reminded me of those times last yr when em randomly invited me over to eat noodles & take care of me & tbh that’s the only non-parent love that feels so real that i can cry

- today was so awful bc it’s a Tuesday & that means i have printmaking from 10-4 & then chinese avant-garde 4-6 plus mei from wow could only call me at 1 today out of all the times this week so i spent my lunch break doing that & another stressful thing was my oral presentation in the grad student class that i was rly not prepared for. so i wake up around 8:30 & try to finish the reading i want to present abt bc i wanna review & don’t come close to finishing & head off to class & i had spent 3 hrs in the print show the previous day preparing materials for this class that we didn’t even use so im making a stupid book & it’s so stupid & i eat a few of my dumplings i fried in the 10 mins before class started & can’t eat them bc i feel watched & pressure to read & pressure abt how i don’t know anything abt what to do in this art class & ppl helping always feels like ppl telling me I’m stupid & also im just feeling bad in my body. so i unsuccessfully make 1 book after two attempts & then it’s 11:30 & i give up & just sit down to read & restless reading & then i go to lunch meaning i come to my room to read & at this point im feeling suuper queasy like dry mouth, throat closing up, feeling like i wanna throw up so i do & there isn’t rly much to throw up & it’s 12:59 & i think abt throwing up some more but i rush to drink water instead & the call comes at 1:03 & i am so cheery & have nothing to say so i just say all the things abt me & then she asks if i have any questions & i talk abt how amazing em is as if that’s an answer but not before telling her u have to go to class so we say bye & i go to class & tomas isn’t there yet even tho he looked me in the eyes earlier in the day & said he wants to meet with all of us for crit & so i ask joanna if we will be learning anything Jew in the afternoon & she says no & she would go if she were sick so i just put my stuff away & go to my room to finish (sorta) reading & type up a script for my presentation & then i tell xinni im leaving class around 2:45 so we go to the heyman center & i finish writing my part of the thing & putting pictures in & she finishes hers & we go to class & our presentation goes very well & lydia helps question ppl for discussion too so it’s not that awkward & i ask lydia abt what is avant-garde if were talking abt capitalists selling colonial modernity & anarchists in the same sentence & she spends the last half our talking abt how movements should resist definitions bc those delineations of boundaries are not conducive to discourse & so class ends & now im shivering bc im sick & i come back to drink some nyquil yay & chat with my ra & then nneka swipes me in to the dining hall but shes w the ra chatting for too long in a line that’s too long so i leave & sit in bed with my food to take a 15 min nap & by some miracle i get up to talk to grace & kyoko abt a workshop for apia-u & then aaa meeting happens & its whatever & i come back to my room- pretty sad day right? but i look at my phone & see Emma has sent me a video out of the blue called i love eggs & it’s just a song saying i love u abt eggs thatturn into superheroes & planes & rainbows & etc & idk if this is a super gay proposal or sorts or just super gay friend things but i think i interpret it as both. Finally i got an email from em saying they would love to welcome me as a wow intern & im sorta guilty bc it somewhat feels like i tricked em into making this happen for me by being pitiful but that’s such an awful thing to think & mostly i am very excited to work with em & see em & go to Chinatown & be tender & goofy & also earn a bit of money?? but yes very very good day.

I'm 16 and I've been having problems with my TMJ. So a month or two ago I went to the hospital for an MRI on both sides of my jaw. Yesterday my mother told me that they are charging $11,000 for my MRI and insurance isn't going to pay for it. She also told me my maxillofacial specialist told her at the most it should have been $3000 total or $1200 for each side. Why does insurance pay for the surgery to correct TMJ disorders but not the MRI to diagnose it? Even when surgery is a last resort effort to correct the problem and isn't recommended most of the time. And it sucks even more for me once I am 18 because I'm basically screwed.
