???: Ah, good morning. Tsubasa, do you know if Shiki is back yet?

???: Yesterday he said he was fine, so I let him go back alone, but… even for him, he was really drunk… So I was still worried, and came to see how he was.

???: *laughs* That’s true! Sorry, sorry. Ah, I see, that’s why Tsubasa was staring at me with his eyes wide open. Of course you’d be surprised, if an unknown man rudely entered the dorm so early in the morning.

Tsubasa: Hey, Shiki, what’s going on? Explain!

Shiki: Please give me time to at least wash my face. *closes door*

???: Take your time!

Tsubasa: Could it be, yesterday’s call…?

Dai: What the hell, so noisy… Eh- who?

???: Good morning, Dai. Rikka… ah, I know, he’s out running.

Dai: Who are you?

Tsubasa: Our exclusive manager, apparently.

Dai: Exclusive… manager?

Haiduki: … Therefore, in this occasion, I have become SolidS’ exclusive manager. I’m Haiduki Fumihiko. I look forward to working with you. I’m sorry for surprising you so early in the morning.

Tsubasa: You bet!

Haiduki: I said I’m sorry! I was convinced Shiki would have at least finished the introductions already.

Dai: Could it be that the person who was drinking with Shiki yesterday… was him?

Shiki: Yeah, it’s him.

Haiduki: I was appointed as the manager, and it had been a while since we had seen each other, so… I told him to accompany me for once.

Rikka: Um… Did you know each other from before? You look close, so…

Haiduki: That’s right. I’m his former colleague… and I guess we’re from the same period? We’re the same age, and I’ve been working in Tsukipro since I was 20. At that time, I was still a university student and it was like a part-time job. And this guy quit being an idol and turned to working behind the scenes.

Tsubasa: Then, with this and that… you’ve known each other for about 5 years?

Haiduki: That’s what it is.

Rikka: At that time, I think I already knew Shiki… we’re not acquainted, right?

Haiduki: Not directly. But I heard about you from Shiki, so I one-sidedly knew about you. The former model, Sera Rikka-kun. I didn’t think we’d be involved like this, but I look forward to working with you from now on.

Rikka: Ah, yes! Same here, please take care of me.

Haiduki: Um… let me think…

Shiki: Stop!!

Tsubasa: It’s fine, isn’t it?

Haiduki: Don’t glare at me, Shii-kun! Tsubasa, Shii-kun is scary, so I’ll tell you next time while drinking.

Tsubasa: I’m in!

Shiki: *sigh*

Dai: Um, how exactly are things going to change now that we have an exclusive manager?

Haiduki: Oh, sorry, that’s true. I need to talk about that. For now, it’s not like things will change completely or anything, so you can feel at ease. First of all, I’ll get a grasp on all the miscellaneous works Shiki’s doing and slowly finish them. Or at least, I’ll manage the schedules and transportations. And then, gradually adapt to the way it works best for everyone. SolidS is steadily gaining popularity, and you’ll probably get busier from now on. That’s why the agency thought to adjust your organization while we can.

Dai: Then it means Shiki’s burden will decrease?

Haiduki: It will. It’s a waste of resources for him to spend time on odd jobs.

Shiki: They’re not odd, they’re necessary jobs.

Haiduki: Listen here. I told you yesterday too, if it’s something anyone could do, you have to throw it at someone else! You need to grow out of your perfectionism and your “I need to know everything” syndrome already. They’re not bad things, and it’s the proof that SolidS is moving to the next step. You should be proud of that. But to begin with, your “if I don’t do everything myself I’m not satisfied” is a bad habit you’ve always had. Okay?

Shiki: …

Dai: This person is so strong…

Rikka: Literally zero time to interject…

Tsubasa: Shiki not being able to even object in a direct confrontation… it’s the first time I see it…

Haiduki: Ah, yeah, I’ll take care of Shiki’s own composition schedule from now on too.

Shiki: No, I think I still should do that myself-

Haiduki: Presidential orders.

Shiki: …

Haiduki: *sigh* Shiki, at least trust me a little bit. I know full well your fixation and your passion when it comes to music. I’ll respect your intention, and I will never cause you trouble. In short, you just should put all your energy only into the things you really want to do. Cut corners when you can, and give out the best results.

Shiki: To cut corners…!? That’s…

Haiduki: Doing everything at full power? It would be nice if you could, but there’s a limit to what a human being can do. It’s an idealistic thought. You only need to give your all to SolidS. It’s not something to use on office work. Shiki, now you’re different from what you were before. You’re not behind-the-scenes anymore; you’re the agency’s signboard, a talent that is working at the front. The contents and the way of working will change. Am I wrong?

Shiki: …

Haiduki: We can’t have you getting tired because of unnecessary things. Spare some energy, and concentrate on the things only you can do. We want you to make good music. And for that purpose, you should use me, and other people. Conduct yourself well. Isn’t one of your jobs as a producer to use people properly?

Shiki: …

Tsubasa: I agree with that.

Shiki: … Tsubasa?

Tsubasa: Isn’t it fine, Shiki? How about you get your schedule managed and get some proper sleep? If you pretend to use me in that sleep-deprived state, you’re 100 years early.

Shiki: I don’t think I’m losing energy!

Dai: Even if you say that, if you continue like this, you’ll end up harming your health.

Shiki: Dai… I’m taking care of myself.

Rikka: Haiduki-san is saying he’ll make it so it’s easy for us all, so why not give it a try? If you try it and you’re not satisfied, you can discuss it again.

Shiki: Rikka…

Haiduki: So is everything in order? Oh no, Tsubasa, you should start to get ready.

Tsubasa: Why?

Haiduki: The interview.

Tsubasa: Ah!!!

Shiki: *sigh* Did you forget?

Tsubasa: I remembered until a while ago! But it suddenly got into this development so it slipped my mind!

Haiduki: *sigh* Yeah, yeah, it’s because of me! *chuckles* I’m sorry. I came by car so I’ll give you a ride to the agency.

Tsubasa: Thanks. Well then, I’ll go get ready.

Haiduki: Shiki. Leave Tsubasa to me, and do your own work. You haven’t finished yet, right?

Shiki: *sigh* Okay, I got it. I’ll leave him to you.

Haiduki: Also, I’ll negotiate about the deadlines, so tonight you sleep at least 8 hours.

Shiki: You don’t need to-

Haiduki: No excuses. The fact that you got wasted after drinking that much is the proof you’re sleep-deprived. Sleep for once, and step up your performance. That way, as a result, you’ll finish earlier.

Shiki: …

Haiduki: If you whine too much, you’ll end up having to listen to my lullaby at night~

Shiki: Ugh… Stop… I’ll have nightmares.

Haiduki: Well, then! I’ll bring the car in front of the dorm. When Tsubasa comes, could you tell him I’m waiting at the entrance?

Dai: Okay, understood.

Rikka: Um… thank you so much, for everything…

Haiduki: This is my job, after all. We’ll discuss the details little by little. Well then, see you later.

Rikka: A manager, huh… He looks very capable, and he’ll help us a lot, but it’s really sudden…

Dai: Shiki looked like he was in a really bad mood.

Rikka: Hm… more than being in a bad mood… that was…

Dai: That was?

Rikka: He’s not too good with people like him. Haiduki-san doesn’t seem to have a problem, though.

Dai: That’s true, it’s difficult to guess the true feelings of that kind of people. I think I’m a bit weak with them too. Trying to find out somebody’s real intentions, or using properly your two sides… I can’t do skilful things like that.

Rikka: You and Shiki are similar in some ways, after all.

Dai: But, that’s exactly why, I have the feeling he’s the most suitable person to be Shiki’s supporter. I can’t explain it well, but…

Rikka: *chuckles* Well, well, I wonder how things are going to be now.

“Baby, It’s Cold Outside”: To Ban or Not to Ban?

The ranks here at FASHION are not filled with men. Shocking, right? But there are one or two (there are actually, literally, two). Naturally, when a question about male/female dynamics arises it’s only fair that one of them stand in for the members of his gender and provide some insight. Our last topic of conversation was about the social media furor over Ruby Rose being cast as lesbian superhero Kate Kane aka Batwoman and today we’re talking about the controversy surrounding cult Christmas hit “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Two of our staffers—from the men’s corner, Greg Hudson, and from the women’s, Pahull Bains—talk it out.

PB: Yesterday, when two of our colleagues began discussing the “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” brouhaha I realized I’d never actually listened to the song in full. Growing up in India, it wasn’t something we heard regularly around the holidays (shocker, I know) so I was unaware of its baggage. But I knew I had to give it a listen when I heard it described as “rapey.”

GH: I think we can all agree that one of the most beautiful aspects of cultural exchange is sharing and comparing problematic or offensive pop culture. It warms my heart that we were able to share with you this Ode to Toxic Masculinity: The Holidays Edition.

Before we delve into all the ways that song is icky, I think it’s interesting to note how this issue has been growing each successive Christmas. I remember a few years ago, it felt like calling out “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” was a unique observation, albeit one that several hundred people were all having independently. It’s like the Die Hard-as-a-Christmas-Movie debate, which seemed to have hit its peak last year. I think it’s interesting that a song that has been a bit gross for, like 70 years, is just now really entering the popular consciousness.

Hot take: this is all happening this year because of Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court hearings.

But, anyway: yes, the song. Last week, it made news by being removed from some radio stations owned by Canadian broadcasters like CBC and Bell Media because of the mild outrage. Then, this week, because of the backlash to the backlash (there’s always backlash to backlash), CBC has put it back up. Now that you’ve finally heard the song in its entirety, what do you think about it?

PB: Initial verdict: CRINGE. The woman’s voice is completely negated throughout the song/conversation. She’s repeatedly ignored, patronized and dismissed, while the man is clearly the dominating force calling the shots. By depicting such a skewed power dynamic in which a man refuses to take no for an answer, it’s propagating dangerous ideas about consent. That said, I think we’d be remiss not acknowledge the era in which this song was written. In the 1940s a woman’s voice had very little power and women very little agency or independence. They were expected to be coy and demure, and let a man “take charge” and never, ever make the first move. So the song is clearly a reflection of the societal mores of the time, hugely problematic as they were.

On a second listen, though, my strong initial reaction was tempered a bit. If you listen to all of the woman’s objections, they’re largely of the “what will people say” variety: “the neighbours might think,” “I ought to say no, at least I’ll say that I tried,” and “there’s bound to be talk tomorrow.” Again, this is an era in which a single woman drinking alone with a single man was bound to raise all sorts of eyebrows. So most of her reluctance seems to stem from a desire to protect her reputation, rather than, you know, a desire to get away from him. What do you think?

GH: That’s a really good point! And by good, I mean, it’s a new point that I’d never noticed before. See, because I always read her stated objections as the excuses she chose to say in order to be the most persuasive, while still being relatively inoffensive. Like, she can’t just say, “No. I don’t want to make out. I want to go home. Back off, creep.” Because, ha! Who cares what a woman wants. But! If that woman makes it about more than just herself, ie. worried mothers, gossipy neighbours, maybe—just maybe—she’ll convince the dude that she needs to leave, despite the cold.

Actually, I realize it’s kind of like “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.” That song, despite its adulterous undertones, is about a mom and a dad kissing while the dad is dressed as Santa. It’s never explained in the song because the songwriters assume the listeners will know (spoiler alert) that Santa isn’t real. But as a kid, because Santa was real, the Mommy was just a cheater. It’s all about the assumptions you have going in.

From our modern perspective, we can’t help but hear the woman in “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” as endangered. We assume she doesn’t want to be there, hence her always wanting to leave. But, the piece, which was written by a real life couple, wasn’t meant to carry that kind of baggage. The songwriters would likely have assumed that listeners would believe that the couple was just being coy. That they both really wanted to stay together but were pretending to have doubts. Granted, that people at the time wouldn’t assume a date rape was happening represents its own problem.

PB: Right. I read a couple of interviews the songwriter’s kids have done in recent years, always around the holidays when, like clockwork, the debate rears its eternal head. “They’re really equal roles. No one is really the aggressor,” Frank Loesser’s son told Vanity Fair in 2016. “It was a flirtatious, wonderful, sexy number between people who like each other. It really wasn’t anything but that.”

That said, when people hear a song on the radio, they don’t immediately rush to Google it and get the whole backstory. Their assumptions and opinions will be based on an intuitive response. And that gut response is naturally shaped by the context of the world we live in. Last week, Loesser’s daughter told NBC News that the song was beloved until “Bill Cosby ruined it for everybody.” Well, lets face it: the world is changing. Why should we have to take off our new, Cosby-coloured glasses in order to enjoy a song?

Which brings me to the inflammatory question fuelling this debate year after year: should the song be banned?

I think it’s important to acknowledge just how much pop culture shapes our society. I mean, a generation of young boys listened to this song, which by all reports, seems to have gone the 1940s-equivalent of viral. (It also won an Oscar!) Which means a generation of boys grew up to be men who believed that getting a ‘yes’ out of a woman was just a matter of pushing long enough to invalidate all her hesitations. Whether or not that’s what the song set out to do is besides the point; if that overwhelmingly seems to be the takeaway then that is the takeaway.

I don’t know if banning it is the answer though because a) honestly, which young kid these days is modelling his behaviour on a classic hit from the ‘40s that he probably only hears once a year? b) there are far more pernicious pieces of pop culture out there that deserve an irate debate more than this one (I’m looking at you, R Kelly) and c) I’m not in favour of blanket bans in general. If there are parents out there with an aversion to the song, change the channel. Don’t play it for your kids on Christmas. TALK to your kids about consent.

But if a radio station doesn’t want to play the song, I’m totally fine with it. That’s their executives’ decision. If a nightclub doesn’t want to play R Kelly, that’s their choice. If a film festival doesn’t want to screen a film by a problematic director, again, their choice. And I respect it.

Which side of the ‘to ban or not to ban’ debate do you fall on?

GH: I agree. Of course, it’s easy for me to say that since I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve wanted to leave a woman’s house only to be ignored (and potentially drugged). Well, actually, I have been in that situation, but it was different since there was no potential for physical violence. But I digress.

The truth is, this is one of those issues where both sides seem disproportionately passionate about their cause. Will a Christmas song really influence anyone’s behaviour (aside from going to bed early and choosing not to cry or pout)? No. But will Christmas and Freedom of Speech be ruined if this one song is forgotten? No! A Christmas song—let alone a controversy surrounding one—is basically privilege in action. There are, as you say, more important things to worry about. And until I do something to, like, help the poor and hungry at Christmas, I’m not going to pretend that fighting against problematic songs is really making the world better. And besides, as you say, there’s a teaching opportunity here.

A Distant Song - Summer Challenge

Aaaand I’m back on schedule! Have the next chapter.

The band gets an unexpected visitor and Hotsuma’s life seems to get better.

Chapter 11

Time passed. The work on the album intensified so that they’d be able to keep the planned release date. All five band members spent long hours practising and recording and having photo shoots for the cover and the booklet. And there were interviews scheduled with what felt like every big music magazine in South East Asia and for radio stations and TV shows... And Shuusei had to take part in more of that stuff than he wanted to.

Of course they had several small concerts from time to time and Kase was already planning the release tour through Asia.

The relationship between the band and their manager stayed chilly. The private visits had distanced them even more. One day when they returned to their practice room from a small lunch break they found the boss of their agency sitting on an armchair.

They were surprised but greeted the man, a guy with long light reddish brown hair and a scar on his cheek.

“Good that you’re all here,” the man, Giou Takashiro nodded towards them. Ria got herself a guest chair before she started to prepare coffee and tea while the others sat down on the other armchairs. Tsukumo got the box with cookies which Shuusei had brought yesterday with best regards from his flatmate which he offered to their boss – after clearing the table from any work-related stuff.

“Pardon the mess, you may know the release of the new album is close and we’re busy.”

Takashiro shook his head. “Don’t worry. I’m not here to control you. I know you work very assiduously.”

“Then what leads you here?” Sairi asked curiously.

“I have received your complaint about your manager’s behaviour. Thank you Otona-san.” He accepted the cup of tea he was offered.

“And? What do you think?” It was again Sairi who spoke as always.

“I’ve already talked to Kase-san about the matter. He said he did the visits to get to know you better. He was more under the impression that you wanted to bully him out.”

Shuusei exchanged a look with Touko.

“I totally support everything that strengthens the relationship between a band and their manager and I will not tolerate one party harassing the other,” Takashiro continued and raised a hand when he saw the band wanted to immediately protest. “So I am here to listen to your version of his visits. What had happened that led to you complaining about him?” He looked at Ria.

“I think I was the first he visited. He was still friendly even though he was much too curious. He wanted to be led through my flat and asked a few too many questions about potential visitors and about my guy friends.”

“Well he wanted to make sure you stick to your contract. I don’t think it’s too problematic.” Takashiro mused.

Ria shrugged. “I didn’t like the way he asked. As if he expected me to hide a secret lover – who doesn’t exist. He was just too curious but not completely unfriendly.”

“I see, so where did it escalate?”

Shuusei gulped. “When he visited me after Ria-san,” he said. He felt nervous and tried not to play with the zipper of the sweater jacket he wore.

“Ah, yeah he said you kicked him out and threatened to call the police?”

Shuusei nodded. “He showed the same curiosity he had with Ria-san. And he got already agitated when I denied him his wish to look into every room of my flat and then disrespected it. And after he assumed any kind of sexual relationship between my flatmate and me in an incredibly rude way I asked him to leave.”

“You have a flatmate?” Even the boss seemed to know that Shuusei was not the most social person.

“I do... A childhood friend of mine who has nowhere else to go, so I give him a place to live.” That was enough information, right? And it gave away said flatmate’s gender so that it really should be no problem.

“I see. May I ask how exactly it happened?” Takashiro asked so that Shuusei had to recall the details of Kase’s visit.

Takashiro nodded again when Shuusei had finished.

“I am really interested in a good relationship with our manager, but I want to be respected as a person as well.” And Kase didn’t show any respect for him.

“And he doesn’t?” Takashiro asked.

“No,” Touko barged in. “He doesn’t even recognize Shuusei’s work although half of the music of the new album is from his hands. He has his problems with Shuusei only concentrating on the creative work and staying out of many other activities. Sometimes I have the feeling he talks to a child when he addresses Shuusei.”

“What does your contract say?” Takashiro asked Shuusei. “It’s strongly expected from the idols to participate in other activities as well.”

“It says I have to participate in music-related stuff but I don’t have to take model or acting jobs.” He got up and took a folder from a shelf to show Takashiro the contract.

“Oh, why is it like this?”

“I asked to include it when I first started to work for this agency. I’m not comfortable doing the other stuff and I have enough work to do since we do all the creative work ourselves.”

Takashiro nodded again. “Okay.” He didn’t seem to like Shuusei’s explanation but he accepted it. And the contract was not the topic anyways.

“So he was curious and you didn’t want to give away too much personal information and when he asked you about your relationship with your flatmate you threw him out?”

“It wasn’t that he asked about our relationship, it was the way he assumed it. It was simply rude.”

“What did he say?”

“He asked us in a very disgusted voice whether we were ‘engaging in sodomy’,” Shuusei quoted Kase.

Takashiro raised an eyebrow. Apparantly Kase had not told him that detail.

“That were really his words?” Tsukumo asked after Takashiro had left. Not without taking a few of Hotsuma’s cookies with him.

Takashiro had shown sympathy with the band but he couldn’t give them a new manager as they had requested. There was simply no one else who could do the job without changing another idol group’s manager as well and he didn’t want to do it right now.

“That was what he said and why I had to make clear he’s not welcome in my home.”

“Wow... Even if you were gay that’s not how you ask,” Ria exclaimed. “You had every right to kick his ass!”

Shuusei shrugged and finished his tea. He didn’t know what to say, so he just continued with the stuff he had been doing before they had left for lunch.

The following weeks were filled with finishing the recording of the songs and planning of the release tour. Kase seemed to pull himself together so Takashiro had had a serious talk with him.

Nevertheless the time was very demanding and so Shuusei had to deal with a very worried flatmate who had discovered an opened pack of caffeine pills next to Shuusei’s sleeping pills. Shuusei had to promise to take good care of himself and to take a break when he needed it. But what should he do? The work had to be done! No one had any free time and all of them were only home to sleep and one meal a day.

It happened during the week before the release, they were just practising some sort of choreography for the songs they’d perform on the tour when Shuusei’s phone announced a text message. When he looked at the screen during the next short break he noticed it was from Hotsuma: “Sorry, I’ll not be home tonight to cook for you. Perhaps I’ve got a job at least for the next two and a half months. Details later at home.”

A happy grin appeared on Shuusei’s face when he replied. “Congratulations! Take your time. That’s more important than preparing my meals. I’ll get something on my way home.”

“Good news?” Touko asked when Shuusei put the phone aside.

“Hotsuma may have found a job. I don’t know where, yet. He sounded like he’d stay there already today to prove his abilities.”

“Oh that’s great for him!!” Ria cheered. “You need to tell us everything tomorrow!”

Shuusei nodded. His friends regularly asked about Hotsuma and they had given Shuusei several addresses where his friend could try to land a job.

But then they continued with their practise. Shuusei hoped they’d be finished by tomorrow. Unlike many other idol groups they didn’t have complicated choreographies simply because four of five band members were playing their instruments but some songs demanded a bit of organized movements.

Later at home Shuusei waited for Hotsuma’s return. He had gotten his guitar and played on it just for fun to pass the time.

It was almost midnight when Hotsuma came home.

“Huh? I thought you’d be already asleep,” he greeted Shuusei who put the guitar aside.

“What? Not before you tell me where you’ve been today and what your job’s about. I’m dying from curiosity!” Really, what did this guy think? No matter how busy Shuusei was, he would always be interested in Hotsuma’s life and relinquish some hours of restless sleep.

“It’s about cooking,” Hotsuma said and dropped onto the armchair.

“That’s good. And what else?”

“You remember the restaurant we used to go to on our birthdays as kids?” Hotsuma asked.

“There?” Shuusei asked excitedly and looked at his friend curiously eager to get more details. He hadn’t been there in a long time but he had loved the family-like atmosphere of the restaurant. The owner and his wife had always been so kind to them and the food had been good.

Hotsuma nodded.

“But why only for two months?” Shuusei asked. “I remember Fujita-san liking you very much and always calling you her little gold-boy”

“They may be closing soon. Fujita-san’s husband’s too old for the hard work in the kitchen and somehow after he retired they lost too many guests. She was reluctant to let me at least prepare something for her, but when I convinced her she liked it. She wanted to keep it open for the next two and a half months and then close it unless she finds someone who could bring them new customers. She’s also not the youngest anymore,” Hotsuma explained.

“So...” Shuusei looked at Hotsuma. “It’s your task to get them new customers with your cooking?” That was great!

“I hope I can do it. I mean... I’m no professional chef!”

“But you’re great at cooking. Perhaps that’s exactly what they need: Fresh ideas from someone who’s not familiar with the conventional way of cooking. And when I look at it nothing can go wrong. If you succeed the shop can survive many more years and you can work there for a long time but if it should fail the worst thing is that you have to go on looking for another job. If Fujita-san is really preparing to close the restaurant she would not have any risks.” That was a great chance for Hotsuma. Shuusei would support it.

“May I already make a reservation for our release party next week Saturday? Five people?”

“What?” Hotsuma asked.

“We’ll release a new album next week, already forgotten? And we usually celebrate by going out to eat. I guess everyone wants to have some food prepared by you.”

“Shuusei...”

“Have faith in yourself. You can do it!” Shuusei smiled at Hotsuma. He was so happy for him. And he hoped they could succeed. A small restaurant was a place he could imagine his friend; a place where people could look behind a person’s appearance. “I mean... you could try to be creative in the kitchen, right?”

Hotsuma nodded. “Fujita-san wants me to prepare a few meals for her to try tomorrow and which she may add to the menu. She encouraged me to use my European experiences.”

“That’s fantastic! Hotsuma, I’m so happy for you!” Shuusei smiled as happily as he hadn’t in many weeks; although he knew in the back of his mind that in case it succeeded Hotsuma would start to look for an own place to live. And somehow Shuusei really didn’t like the thought of being alone again.
