ok jokes aside i do think that wendell & wild manages to pull off the outsider schtick a lot better than. certain recent tim burton films. mainly bc kat is actually an outcast. she’s been bullied, isolated from her peers, exploited by capitalism and the prison industrial complex, and separated from her community. she’s not just needlessly edgy or rebellious, either- her punk-ness is not only a rebellion against the systems that exploit her, but a way for her to remember her parents and her community. the song that plays as she modifies her uniform (i am a poseur) and the song that plays during the car crash (germfree adolescence) are from the same band, x ray spex! it’s clear that she’s inherited her parent’s music taste! and a lot of the songs on the soundtrack are similarly from black rock and punk bands! compare to, say, tim burton’s alice in wonderland (which completely discards the original novel’s satire of victorian british adulthood in favor of edginess). alice claims to be “mad” and an outsider, but in the end has a paint by numbers hero’s journey that follows the role that society sets out for her and ends in her becoming a colonizer in the name of being a girlboss. selick and peele know exactly what they’re saying and what it means to be an outsider right now, but burton doesn’t seem to have realized that he hasn’t been an outsider for several years at this point
