just saw some video of a guy busting a nut in his jeans at a twerking contest and oh my goodness Darren aranofsky WISHES he could capture something as horrific as that video. requiem for a dream, the wrestler nor black swan have anything on that video. the way it was shot was so terrifying... the pan to the audience, his wet jeans on the jumbo screen, "HE HAS RELEASED SEMEN IN HIS JEANS, HE HAS CLIMAXED" from the commentators.... it was like a nightmare where you do something embarrassing... that video captured exactly what it feels like

Having a YouTube account: still getting notifs of the heated debate under a video review of some darren aranofskis film that i cluelessly commented on 3 years ago, getting trolls and hate comments under every one of my videos for leaving a comment under some random Al Jazeera video on feminism back in 2016, getting 1 mil views under a video i re-uploaded for archiving purposes (for myself mostly), getting 5 notifs a day, still getting subscribers from that very same video, got mad at americans under tiffanyferg's video that was about america that discussed specifically american issues, got polite and tactful reply from her, felt bad afterwards, getting more subscribers, god, why are you here, im not going to upload anything else, still getting those heated replies from the mother! video reaction, no, dude, it's not a good movie, this guy's work is largely overrated, his metaphors are lazy and you just won't change my mind, okay, it's personal, i hated him since requiem for a dream, im not reading all of that but im glad for you or sorry that that happened

giving diane warren her 14th nomination over giving taylor her first 😭 the academy really don’t like her

I’m telling you!! The academy is very fickle and petty with what they like and don’t like. They don’t like actors-turned-directors, they don’t like horror/thriller movies, they don’t like random industry people for seemingly unknown reasons like Aranofsky, they don’t like being told they can’t separate the art from the artist, they don’t like black people for obvious (racist) reasons (and anyone not white in general) and so why not tack on Taylor Swift to the list!

All jokes aside I do think it’s a bit more complicated than just they hate her. She’s had some 8-9 attempts now sure but most of them were not very good attempts, imo. Like…. Not good songs lol. And they’re usually attached to movies that are not seriously considered in the Oscar’s conversation writ large anyway. 50 shades, Crawdads, Cats, etc. So it’s no surprise she’s been unsuccessful so far. The song category is a weird one, both the fact that it exists and the way it usually goes down. If you’ve been following the Oscar’s for a while, it’s extremely predictable down to the annual Diane Warren nomination which is something of an in-joke at this point. But if you’re a casual viewer then I can see why you had misplaced hope for taylor and why you’re baffled. From an entertainment standpoint, it’s quite funny to watch someone who usually sweeps competitions in every other arena, deservedly as she’s extremely talented, have the biggest losing streak of her career because the category is cuckoo bananas. You have to laugh!

dang, the whale trailer is great, but i'm so confused - it doesn't seem like an aranofsky film. i'm only familiar with his horror work.

he has directed/produced movies about regular people and real life struggles before. requiem for a dream is one of, maybe even THE most hard hitting movie about drug addiction.

The Whale (O-Ton, Spoiler)...

...ist auf den allerersten Blick einer der harmloseren, fast möchte ich sagen konventionelleren Aranofskys, weil er schnörkellos und bis auf zwei minikurze Rückblenden ohne jeglichen Spielortwechsel die Geschichte einer Vater-Tochter-Versöhnung schildert und dabei mehr als nur einmal haarscharf am Melodram schrammt. Doch was er darüber hinaus ganz nebenbei, bisweilen nie ausgesprochen und so gut versteckt erzählt, dass es teilweise erst Stunden später den Weg in das Bewusstsein der geneigten Zusehenden findet, das sind derart tief erschütternde Blicke in seelische und gesellschaftliche Abgründe, dass sie mich am Tag 3 nach der Sichtung immer noch nicht losgelassen haben.

Getragen von der wunderbar zurückhaltenden, so gar nicht auf große Preise schielenden Performance von Brendan Fraser sowie eines herausragend guten Restensembles sehen wir hier im Grunde nicht weniger als die Vernichtung eines Menschen in drei Phasen, erst durch eine bigotte Gesellschaft, die ihm seine große Liebe nahm, dann durch sich selbst, der er sich langsam zu Tode frisst, wo Nicholas Cage in "Leaving Las Vegas" noch den Alkohol als langsames Selbstmordmittel bevorzugte, und dann am Ende durch ein System, dass ihm die Wahl lässt, sein Leben zu retten oder die finanzielle Stabilität der Tochter zu gewährleisten. Aronofsky hat dabei wohltuender Weise null Interesse an Didaktik, sondern schildert nüchtern und erschreckend nachvollziehbar die einzelnen Entscheidungsschritte seines Protagonisten - wie er überhaupt allen Figuren Facetten gibt, deren narrative Widerhaken verhindern, dass sie in irgendeiner Form wirklich in irgendeine Schublade passen, so sehr der im Kern nach klassischen Wendungen gestrickte Plot das zu Beginn suggerieren mag. Gerade diese Form der radikalen Differenzierung sorgt dafür, dass die melodramatischeren Momente zwar nicht die Wasserfälle auslösen, wie es Filme erreichen würden, die klarer dem Tränendrückerschema folgen würden, aber dafür länger und tiefer bewegen und im Gedächtnis bleiben.

"The Whale" wurde von einigen ob seiner Besetzung und Schilderung eines schwer übergewichtigen Mannes kritisiert. Das meiste ist dazu im Guten wie im Schlechten gesagt worden, dennoch fände ich meine Kritik unvollständig, wenn ich es nicht kurz mit meinem, als nicht Betroffener für die Debatte belanglosem Senf streifen würde: ja, ich glaube, dass das Übergewicht der Hauptfigur ein entscheidendes narratives Element ist, ohne das die Geschichte so nicht funktionieren würde, ja ich halte Brendan Frasers Casting für gelungen, weil er selbst jahrelang übergewichtig war UND weil es nach allem, was ich vom Filmdreh weiß und selbst erlebt habe, in meinen Augen komplett unmöglich gewesen wäre, einen Menschen mit solch schwerem Übergewicht einzusetzen, ohne ihn schwerer gesundheitlicher Gefahren auszusetzen. Und schließlich: nein, ich teile überhaupt nicht die Ansicht, dass Aronofsky seinen Protagonisten nicht empathisch zeigt und ihn lediglich vorführen möchte. Mir war Frasers Charlie oft sehr sehr nahe, weil er Kämpfe führt, die nicht die meinen sind, bei denen ich aber immer wieder gemeinsame Nenner finde. Viele von uns wählen verschiedene Arten der Selbstvernichtung, oft im sehr kleinen, oft ohne es selbst zu merken, und dieser Film zeigt es uns lediglich auf erschütternd transparente Art und Weise. Ich für meinen Teil konnte da immens gut anknüpfen.

"The Whale" ist kein durchgehender Faustschlag in die Magengrube, wie Aronofskys "The Wrestler", mit welchem er viele Grundmotive und ein bittersüßes Ende teilt. Sein Gift wirkt schleichender, dafür aber auch nachhaltiger. Er zeigt uns liebevoll wie kompromisslos die Menschen in all ihren wunderbaren, grausamen Facetten und lässt uns dann allein damit, sie zu beurteilen, was lang anhaltende Denk- und Fühlprozesse in Gang setzt, die sehr tief gehen können.

Keine kleine Leistung für einen Film, der die allermeiste Zeit in einer einzigen Wohnung spielt.
