Hi, my name is Ben, I'm 32, I live in Vermont (USA) and I require a multi-purpose service dog. My main focus for a service dog is for the detection and alert of low blood sugars to do with my Diabetes, as I no longer feel them beforehand and that has become increasingly dangerous. For this, I will be going through Diabetic Alert Dogs of America (DAD of America). 

The costs related to getting my dog will come to $18,000. The cost breakdown is as follows: $500 for them to start finding a suitable dog for me (which takes around three months); $2,500 down-payment to begin training once the dog is found; and training costs (all due by the time the dog is fully trained in about 6-8 months) of $5,000 for obedience training, $5,000 for scent and alert training, and $5,000 for public access training. Further training for my other conditions (listed below) will be handled after receiving the dog.

I've been a Type-1 Diabetic since age 9, I have been afflicted with severe and debilitating migraines since age 11, I have PTSD and heavy amounts of anxiety, and since turning 18 I have also found I have Celiac Disease (an allergy to wheat and gluten) and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) with Vasovagal Syncope (Fainting due to low blood pressure, and slow blood-return to my brain).

I know that a service dog can make my life easier and safer. I've been trapped in my own home unable to work or enjoy my previous hobbies for over ten years. I don't swim, hike, or walk anymore due to fear of my blood sugar going low with nobody to help me, I don't drive much anymore because when my blood sugar or blood pressure drops I will, and have, faint while driving. I don't work anymore because I was fainting at work and it was no longer safe for me to continue.

Last year I had the unfortunate and terrifying experience of laying on my floor for over an hour and unable to reach anything to raise my blood sugar or even my phone, while my toddler watched, crying hysterically, not understanding what was happening as I waited for my mom to show up since she was coming to take my son for the night. I never want anything like that to happen again, I don't want to crash with my kid in the car because I'm the only one available to drive us to the doctor. I want safety and freedom, I want to enjoy my life again! I genuinely do not know how to do that without the security and assistance of a service dog.

For a long time I only knew that service dogs could be trained to help alleviate the symptoms and stress from PTSD and anxiety, help the blind, those in need of mobility assistance, and the deaf. However, what I didn't know until recently was that service dogs can also be trained to smell the chemical changes in my body and alert me when my blood sugar is about to drop, when my blood pressure drops and I'm about to faint, and even when I have early symptoms of a migraine that I may not notice so that I can take something BEFORE it takes me out of commission.

DAD of America will train my service dog to alert me if my blood sugar drops below 80 or rises above 150, wake me from sleep if my levels are askew, alert me to unnoticed device alarms, grab a bag with supplies and medication in it and bring it to me, get help from someone else, and even to call 911 on a special device if I’m unresponsive and alone. With later training, it will also be able to detect wheat and gluten, which will help me stay a lot safer when eating outside my own home, or even inside of it in some cases. (Fun fact: wheat and gluten are frequently used as undisclosed ingredients in many OTC and RX medications, and while I take the time to research my medications, it’s not always possible for me to locate an ingredient list.)

If you’re looking at all of this and wondering ‘If you’re this unwell/need help, how can you take care of a dog?’ I don’t blame you! I’m not incapable of exercising myself, I just can’t do it safely on my own, and having a service dog with me will allow me to safely exercise the both of us. I love and miss being outdoors, I even miss being able to work, and taking care of a dog that can help me stay safe will create a symbiotic relationship that benefits not just the both of us, but those around me as well. For instance, when I'm taking the dog to the park to play ball or for a long walk, it will allow my son some much needed outdoor playtime which he currently doesn’t really get outside of school.

As far as finances are concerned, once we have the dog in our care, we plan to throw half of the dog’s annual food budget into our savings account using our tax return and toss more in with every paycheck. As for medical, we have a $2,100 limit on CareCredit to help with those costs. Service dogs are also tax-deductible, from their food to vet care to grooming, so we plan to save all receipts and paperwork to help us with continuing to afford its care.

As for the costs associated with the future training that I mentioned earlier, I’m going to do a great majority of that training myself. Anything that I can’t train without outside assistance will be able to wait until we save the funds ourselves. All of this means that these initial funds are the largest we’ll require, and the only time we plan to ask for help.

Now, I want to say that I know the end goal of $18,000 is an astronomical and daunting amount. I know that looking at that kind of number makes people feel like it's not worth donating to because "it won't make a difference". Please know that it will make a difference! ANY amount of money, or even sharing my cause, helps get me closer to my goal. I will be doing my part in seeking grants, as well as fundraising on GoFundMe, Facebook, and selling shirts, hoodies, and coffee mugs through Bonfire.com that I was able to design myself using my art.

I have gotten a LOT of questions about the doberman outcross program and ear cropping/tail docking, some of which are tbh kind troll-y and bait-y, so let me just... clear up and state some things for the record!

1. It's not my program, but it's the only one I know of doing extremely necessary work re: doberman genetic diversity; these dogs are some of the most inbred and suffer for it enormously. No program is perfect, and on the balance people who work hard to improve the health of the breed so dogs aren't dropping dead at age 4 of DCM, in a breed where even doing line outcrosses or breeding to pet lines is considered radical, is of such extreme import that I believe it outweighs decisions to alter individual puppies cosmetically, even if I don't agree with the latter policy. Which for the record I don't. But it isn't my decision or my program to run.

2. No, cropping and docking aren't illegal in the US or Canada. Docking is done extremely early, before puppies have a "pain memory" -- although I retain concerns about the long term consequences of esstentially amputating the end of an animal's spine. I do not like it, and would never choose to do it on my own litters. However, Aja would essentially be given to me to use as a service dog in exchange for me taking stewarship of her wellbeing and raising some litters for the program. She is their dog. A trained service dog would normally cost thousands of dollars, guys! This is an amazing opportunity for me, a disabled person! So yes, if that is part of what is required of me for the 1-2 litters I raise while she is in my care, I will do it, because ... it is part of the bargain. I would prefer not to, and I am going to inquire as to the absolute necessity, but it well may be, and if it is I will arrange for it, and do everything in my power to ensure that the puppies' experiences are as pain-free as possible and that they heal up quick. (Cropping is done later and as such generally the choice is left up to the puppy buyers.)

3. I am not sure u guys understand how much is required to try and be taken seriously by the show dog community when running an outcross program. You have to be ten times as responsible -- and, critically, ten times as faithful to the breed standard. Cropping and docking are in the breed standard (altho apparently there is now a standard for the natural ear as well, which is great!!!) Showing the dobe community that one can outcross and still produce dogs which look and behave like dobermans-- dogs that retain "type" -- is essential in trying to convince breed clubs that outcrossing is a viable tool for improving breed health and, in the process, the wellbeing of individual dogs. There are solid reasons for wanting to have the dogs produced by these programs appeal to show breeders specifically, because of how dead set against outcrossing the community is and has been. I do not like this! I think the kinds of people this program has to convince are the kind of people, generally, who I personally would like to fistfight in an alley, for MANY reasons, not limited to unnecessary cosmetic surgeries on pups! But I think it is important to understand that this choice the program is making is not on a whim and does serve a larger purpose of having the dogs produced look as typey as possible, in order to prove that the work they are doing... works, thus convincing the breed club to consider employing some of their methods. If they are able to do this, it will have a huge impact on the health of the breed overall and improve the lives of many, many dogs.

So that is my position on THAT!
