What’s the slander squad?

The Stalk Squad are a few people—possibly even just one person—who are currently combing through my blog (which has been up and active since 2011) hunting for problematic things I’ve said to prove I’m an evil person and that my blog is a wretched hive of scum and villainy. There is a post currently going around the ST fandom that is worthy of quite the eyeroll if you know me at all. It’s a big mix of out of context caps from my blog and straight up lies, such as:

“Phoenix wrote a fic about 11-year-old Erica and 20-year-old Eddie!” Didn’t happen. I ship Erica with Dustin and Eddie with Chrissy. No one else.

“Okay, well Phoenix SUPPORTS fics about 11-year-old-Erica and 20-year-old Eddie” Nope. (I am vehemently against censorship, which means supporting dead doves and dead dove writers, so if you think I’m going to point at another writer who writes disturbing content so y’all can harass them? Forget it.)

“Phoenix AGES UP Erica to write smut about her!” Never wrote smut about Erica. Have written her at ages 16, with a crush on Dustin, and as an adult with two kids. Again. With Dustin.

“SHE REC’D A FIC ABOUT ERICA AND EDDIE” I rec’d a fic featuring adult Erica and adult Eddie that several friends of mine, who are more polyamorous with their Eddie ships than I am, really enjoyed. I haven’t read this fic. Because I like Hellcheer and Dusterica.

“She has a fic about 16-year-old Chrissy and adult Eddie” yep, I sure do. They ain’t real, friends. (Really enjoying a fic about Anna, from Grace Van Dien’s film Roost and Michael, Joseph Quinn’s character in Hoard and can I just say I love that Hellcheer is following in its parent Rumbelle’s footsteps in trying out Anyelle? Anyway, quite the disturbing age difference between Anna and Michael, and it is deliciously creepy, and guess what, no one is getting hurt because THEY AIN’T REAL.) (Yes, I have just decided Rumbelle is the parent of Hellcheer. The Rumbelle pipeline is REAL.)

“She rec’d a dead dove fic about Chrissy and Eddie” An anon linked me this fic to which I responded with a vague eyeball emoji. (I clicked on the fic, read the tags, decided they would be triggering for me, and did this wild thing called exiting out of a fic and moving on with my life.) Because you can do that. You can look at a fic and go “gross” or “this gives me the ick” or “wow this is violently triggering to me, sure glad the author utilized trigger warnings and tags to forewarn me about the content, thank you author, peace out”.

“She weaponizes her trauma as a CSA victim” I am literally just existing. I don’t send anons, I don’t send hate, I mainly just stay on my feed and answer asks that I get sent or occasionally explore the Hellcheer tag. I have been open about being a CSA victim, which makes the P*%$ accusations particularly galling. I would hazard a guess that creating a post to “callout” someone in an attempt to encourage others to harass, bully, and doxx someone else would be far more in the realm of “weaponizing trauma” than me stating I am a CSA victim and I am very against censorship of any kind, whether it’s Ron DeSantis banning books or teenagers whingeing about AO3 content they can easily filter out but are too used to being spoonfed algorithmic content.

“She ate the pretend fake baby of one writer and Eddie Munson!” Actually this is true, I did eat that baby, it was delicious sautéed in butter.

Hello, all you lovely Rumbellers!  It’s nearly November, and you know what that means: it’s time to start thinking about nominations for the Chipped Cup Awards!

As many of you are aware, The Espenson Awards, our fandom’s beloved event to send love to Rumbelle writers and artists, was retired last year.  In an effort to keep the fandom thriving, we decided to make an event that will keep the spirit of the TEAs alive, while putting a new spin or two on it.  

One thing we heard from several participants was that the size of the ballot could be daunting to fill out.  We listened to your feedback, and did our best to distill the nomination categories into something that’s a bit more manageable, while still giving plenty of individual categories to choose from.   You can see the complete list below the cut.  If you have any feedback on these categories, you can send us an Ask.  We’ll be happy to take it into account!

We’re also reducing the number of nominations needed for each entry down to three, where previously it was five.  We’re hoping that this will give a wider range of fan works to choose from.

Finally, we’re adding a new feature: shout-outs.  This will operate similarly to the Newby Spotlight, in that it is not a voting category.  It gives the fandom the chance to shine the spotlight on some old favorites that may have been forgotten over the years.  You can find more details on this feature at the bottom of the nomination categories under the cut.

Those eligible include new writers, artists, gif-makers, etc. Anyone who creates content for the fandom. This category is not voted upon - every newbie whose name is put forth is added to the Spotlight list so that older members of the fandom can get to know them and their work!

This is a brand new category where all participants get the chance to nominate up to three fanfics and three fanarts that they love.  This work can be anything you want - finished or unfinished, a prior TEAs winner or not - but each one MUST be from different writers/artists.  The idea of this is to call the fandom’s attention to works and creators that you feel deserve love from the fandom: forgotten favorites, hidden gems, or that one work you keep coming back to years later.  This is your chance to spread the love and encourage others to do the same!

What kind of AUs do you like? Are there any AUs you hate or just generally have beef with?

Honestly I hated crossovers and AUs UNTIL OUAT (which is basically one big crossover fic). I’m pretty open-minded with AUs. I think the only kind I truly don’t care for are Dark Castle AUs where Belle and Rumpel get together but the author never addresses The Problem With Baelfire. Like, I get it: people would love to know what could have been if Rumpel chose love over power. But I just cannot believe that Rumpelstiltskin would willingly let go of getting his son back. If he did, I think he would come to resent Belle and blame her (because we all know how he loves to dodge blame). I’d rather see an author take two seconds to address Rumpel’s feelings on the matter than ignore it entirely.

In your opinion, what’s the funniest joke/reference/pun you’ve made in a fic?

I don’t think my writing is very funny, tbh. I don’t have that knack. But there’s a moment in an Anyelle fic where Lachlan is trying to cook and it’s just a complete disaster.

What’s your favorite underrated thing in your fandom? (A ship that only you seem to write for, a character there’s almost no fics about, a trope that criminally hasn’t been written yet, etc.)

Lachlan/Belle pairing. Like, I get that Lachlan is kind of a deadbeat scumbag and an alcoholic and a flake. But that’s what makes him so interesting to me. I see a guy who is not that dissimilar to Rumpelstiltskin: someone who has cut himself off from love and leaned hard on an addiction after his actions resulted in the loss of a loved one.

23) Do you make your own wip covers?

Yup. It’s actually an ambition of mine to get good enough at drawing to be able to make all my book covers properly. Not there yet and I might never be but it’s a dream. Anyway for original novels I just do quick temp covers with a vaguely related royalty free stock image + text, nothing fancy. For fandom it depends I have done photo manips, I have done drawings, and for Sanctuary I did quite a few gifsets. I generally like to provide some kind of banner image to liven up the post whatever it is :)

37) Name a series you’ve abandoned writing

Ok I’m going to take the word ‘series’ loosely here. For the most part I am relatively good at finishing what I have started posting. Dredging my memory I think I have only abandoned 4 fanfics in my /cough 20+ years /cough. The first I was about 12 and it’s a very long story to explain. The second I was 19, it was a self-indulgent crossover and I wrote part 1 (it ended on a cliffhanger), but then I could not work out how to keep it going with the crossover element. It just failed the logic test of why everyone would still be included and so I posted all of my notes/thoughts as an epilogue (this was on ff.net) and gave up.

Where I start to feel guilty is with the more recent ones. I wrote for Once Upon a Time for a year or so and I really wanted people to like me, I wanted to feel included. So I jumped on every prompt going. My desperation could probably have been seen from space 🙄. Anyway I wrote two chapters of a rare… crossover pair (hard to explain anyelle quickly but basically that) and then I had so many WIPs in those days that it just constantly fell to the bottom of the pile and when I ran out of steam and stopped, it’s what was left undone. The other one I feel even more guilty about as I actually won a fandom award for it. That was called Painting Layers of Love, and the problem with that is I poured far too much of my own anxiety into one of the characters, and then obviously I wanted the character to be happy which meant dealing with their issues. Problem is I don’t know how to “fix it” as I can’t fix myself. So I stalled as I couldn’t see a way out and eventually just officially abandoned it /guilt /guilt.

For original novels… I struggle with the ‘abandoned’ part because I might go back to it, or I will cannibalise it and use parts elsewhere. I mean sure technically there is a series. I actually indie published Book One. I thought I had been so sensible as I had waited until I had drafted Book Two but I was behind and it was only a first draft. I should have had it fully ready, and if I had waited I would have known, but I had booked promotions and so couldn’t delay. Anyway when I went to revise Book Two it just fell apart. I tried redrafting it from scratch but I could just not make it work. Fortunately nobody had been all that interested and so I took Book One down quietly and decided to chalk it up to experience. I later indie published the first two novels in another series and had to also take them down (this time due to a mental breakdown) buuut that’s another story. And that series really isn’t abandoned as I do intend to fix it up and republish eventually. But yes I suppose the time travel crime series is abandoned. I get nostalgic for it but I don’t know that I will pick it up again. Never say never of course. But my original ideas are many (I could write solidly for a decade and not be done) so it’s not like I need to go back to it.
