Now, here’s a list of flowers and some herbs I’m considering! These have less to do with Emmett’s personality and more to do with things like his backstory, motivations, fears, wants, and such! History & Facts:

Connected with mourning, the dead, and the underworld (fields of asphodel in Greek mythology)

Supposedly used as a remedy against snakebites and sorcery

Tolerant of drought

Symbolic Meaning: 

My regrets follow you to the grave

Anemone —

History & Facts:

Also called “wind flowers”

Origins tied to the Greek myth of Adonis and Aphrodite

Begonia — 

History & Facts:

One of the largest genera of flowering plants at 1,831 species

Most begonias have a sour taste

Is eaten in some parts but is potentially toxic to pets in higher amounts due to oxalic acid found in the plant tissue

Warning, beware, be cautious

Watchfulness

A fanciful nature

Bittersweet —

History & Facts:

Is a type of nightshade and therefore poisonous (though not as much as belladonna)

Berries have an extremely unpleasant taste, makes fatal poisonings uncommon

Bittersweet growing around a house is thought to be a warning to steer clear

Has been used to treat skin diseases

Elderflower —

History & Facts:

Used to treat a wide variety of ailments (sinusitis, colds, influenza, diabetes, etc.)

Used as a flavoring in food and drink

Thought to ward off evil

Either provides protection from witches or is a place of congregation for them

Believed to have a spirit know as the Elder Mother, which would enact revenge over anyone who cut down an elder tree, could be kept at bay by chanting a rhyme

Flowers are edible and the plant contains lutein (a substance greatly beneficial to eyesight)

Is planted in vegetable gardens for protection against pests

Mexican marigolds (also called Aztec marigolds or simplasuchil) are placed on Day of the Dead ofrendas

One of the most poisonous plants in the world

Introduced to almost every continent

Can tolerate drought and near-zero temperatures for short periods

Poisoning can occur through simple touch with bare hands

History & Facts:

One species of poppy (Papaver somniferum) is used as a source of opium

Are a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers and were given as offerings for the dead in Greek and Roman myths

Used as emblems on tombstones

May also symbolize resurrection after death

Rosemary —

History & Facts:

Hardy enough to withstand cool climates and drought for long periods of time

Seeds are difficult to start as the plant has a low germination rate and slow growth, but cal easily live up to 30 years

Has a tendency to flower outside of its flowering season

Used as a symbol of remembrance during war commemorations and funerals in Europe and Australia
