Kapil's home pitch turns into 'temporary jail' to detain Covid-19 curfew violators - Times of India

CHANDIGARH: One of the iconic cricket grounds in the city was turned into a ‘temporary jail’ on Tuesday to detain violators of a curfew imposed to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

The ground in Sector 16 is the home pitch of Kapil Dev, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh.

“We have converted the cricket stadium in Sector 16 and the sports complex in Manimajra into a temporary jail to house those who are found violating curfew orders,” a government functionary told IANS.

The cricket stadium, spread over 15.32 acres, a capacity to hold more than 20,000 people.

According to the police, a first information report (FIR) will be registered under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for violating the curfew norms.

With coronavirus cases spiking to seven, Punjab Governor-cum-Administrator of Chandigarh, V.P. Singh Badnore, on Monday decided to impose indefinite curfew as a precaution in the city, starting midnight.

The Director General of Police has been asked to enforce the curfew without any relaxation whatsoever.

Mewar Empire History

Mewar or Mewad is a region in the south-central part of Rajasthan state of India. It includes the present- day sections of Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Pratapgarh, Rajsamand, Udaipur, Pirawa Tehsil of Jhalawar District of Rajasthan, Neemuch and Mandsaur of Madhya Pradesh and some corridor of Gujarat. For centuries, the region was ruled by Rajputs. The kingly state of Udaipur surfaced as an executive unit during the period of British East India Company governance in India and remained until the end of the British Raj period.

The Mewar region lies between the Aravali Range to the northwest, Ajmer to the north, Gujarat and the Vagad region of Rajasthan to the south, the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh state to the southeast and the Hadoti region of Rajasthan to the east.

Etymology The word”Mewar”is conversational form of Medapata the ancient name of the region. The foremost epigraph that mentions the word Medapata is a 996 – 997 CE (1053 VS) necrology discovered at Hathundi (Bijapur). The word pata or pataka refers to an executive unit. According to the annalist G.C. Raychaudhuri, Medapata was named after the Meda lineage, which has been mentioned in Varāhamihira’s Brihat-Samhita. The 1460 Kumbhalgarh necrology associates the Medas with Vardhana-giri ultramodern Badnor in Mewar region. Historian Sashi Bhusan Chaudhuri associates the ancient Medas with the ultramodern Mer people.

The 1285 CE (1342 VS) Mount Abu (Achaleshwar) necrology of the Guhila king Samarasimha provides the following etymology while describing the military vanquishing of his ancestor Bappa Rawal (Bappaka)”This country which was, in battle, completely submerged in the sopping fat of wicked people by Bappaka bears the name of Śrī Medapāṭa.”Historian Anil Chandra Banerjee dismisses this as a” lyrical fancy.

Terrain The northern and eastern portions of Mewar are made up of an elevated table while the western and southern portions were rocky and hilly with thick timbers. The watershed peak between drainage of the Bay of Bengal and drainage of the Gulf of Khambhat runs nearly through the centre of Mewar. The northern and eastern part of Mewar is a gently leaning straight, drained by the Bedach and Banas River and its feeders, which empty northwest into the Chambal River, a influent of the Yamuna River. The southern and western part of the region is hilly, and marks the peak between the Banas and its feeders and the headstream of the Sabarmati and Mahi gutters and their feeders, which drain south into the Gulf of Khambhat through Gujarat state. The Aravalli Range, which forms the northwestern boundary of the region, is composed substantially of sedimentary jewels, like marble and Kota Stone, which has traditionally been an important construction material. The region is part of the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous timbers’ecoregion. Defended areas include the Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary, the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, the Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary.

Top Attractions to see in Bhilwara

 Mandal

At a distance of about 16 km from the city of Bhilwara, you will come across Mandal. It is a well-known tourist spot in the area as it is home of the cenotaph of Jagganath Kachhawaha. This cenotaph is better known as the “battis khambon ki chhatri”. As is evident from the name, the monument is a handsome and impressive chhatri, or cenotaph, that comprises of 32 pillars that are made of sandstone. Some of the pillars in the chhatri have beautiful designs carved into the bases and tops. The chhatri also happens to enclose a huge Shivalinga.

 Mandalgarh

Mandalgarh is a town that is located at a distance of about 54 km southeast from Bhilwara. Mandalgarh is well-known as the campsite for emperor Akbar during the battle of Haldi Ghati. The town is also home to a half-mile long fort with a low rampart wall and bastions -it is a stronghold that is absolutely worth the visit. The fort also houses a Lord Shiva temple (Jaleshwar) and a Lord Krishna temple (BadaMandir).

 Menal Waterfall

Menalis derived from “MahaNal” which stands for the “great gorge”. Located about 80 km from Bhilwara, this is a beautiful waterfall where waterfalls with great force from a height of about 150 feet. It is said that Menal was the most preferred retreat for Prithviraj Chauhan to escape from the scorching heat of the state.

 Shahpura

Shahpura is a town located at a distance of about 55 km from Bhilwara. It is an important pilgrimage spot for the Ram Sanehisect followers. It is also home to the Ram Dwara, which is an important shrine. Shahpura, surrounded by a wall with four gates, is the site of an annual fair called the “PhoolDolkaMela”. This fair is held in the March-April period for five days. In the northern part of Shahpura, there lies a large palace complex that offers some amazing views of the surrounding areas. Other places to visit in Shahpura include the haveli of Keshri, Trimurti Smarak, and Pivaniya Talab.

 Asind

Located on the left bank of the Khari River, Asind is a small town that is quite well-known for its temples. The town was built by Sawai Bhoj who was the eldest son of Bagh Rao. During the time of the princely rule, the town used to be an estate comprised of 72 villages.

 Bhilwara may be one among the several areas in Rajasthan that are not as well-known as the popular tourist spots, but it does have a number of attractions and popular spots that one should definitely visit.
