Okay, hear me out. Holo technology can simulate all kinds of sensory input. It can do sight, sound, touch, even smell and taste, but also, it can simulate internal senses. You can go kayaking and hang-gliding, and it feels real. So if we accept this... imagine a Supermario holo-program. You jump on Goombas, you punch bricks, you collect coins and turn into a flying squirrel.
