Young people stand against climate inaction in the lead up to the federal election
May 5, 2019 4:23pm AEST
For the people..?
Australia’s efforts to fulfil national and international responsibilities regarding climate change action presents a rather disappointing track record. The development of climate change policy in Australia has been slow, to say the least; and can be attested to the political backdrop and governance settings fighting against it (Hamilton 2001).
Despite Australia’s per capita greenhouse emissions remaining one of the highest among countries of advanced economies contributing to anthropogenic climate change (Head et al. 2013), Australia has shied away from addressing the impacts of the country’s decisions and their obligation to the Australian citizen and the global citizen. This is not to say climate change policy has not advanced but begs the question of the legitimacy of these policies and the seriousness of Australia to enact meaningful change.
On several occasions, the Australian government has backtracked, unravelling positive opportunities in the name of economic development and social prosperity, including: the insistence of special treatment in response to the Kyoto Protocol for Australia to increase its carbon emissions while the rest of the industrialised countries set to reduce theirs (Hamilton 2015), the abolition of Labor’s and Green’s carbon tax under the Abbott Government back in 2014 (Department of the Environment and Energy 2019), and most recently under current Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Australia has dropped emissions-reduction policy—the National Energy Guarantee (NEG), hindering its commitments to the 2015 Paris climate agreement (Morton 2018).
A growing, and younger, audience
Witnessing new global temperature extremes and its effects on people, cities and ecosystems including the coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef (Stuart-Smith et al. 2018), studies have shown growing concern among Australians about climate change and what is being done about it—a large proportion of which are young people (Bennett 2018; Oliver 2018).
Last August, Greta Thunberg, a 15-year old Swedish student sat outside the Swedish parliament by herself protesting climate inaction and months on, inspiring thousands of children all over the world and inadvertently kicking off an international civil disobedience movement to demand change from our world leaders (Watts 2019).
Echoing the actions of Greta, on May 3, young Australians skipped school to partake in the second climate strike of 2019 organised by School Strike 4 Climate, a network of students across Australia passionate about what climate change will mean for this planet and their future (School Strike 4 Climate 2019). There were more than 70 climate strikes organised, with students protesting outside local MPs offices, including the offices of Scott Morrison, Bill Shorten and Tony Abbott.
These protests are important because they break down the vertical governing process and include an otherwise excluded body of society who are not of age to vote.
It is important to note, as with partaking in other forms of civil disobedience, many students have been discouraged from attending the climate strike where some schools have warned of the consequences of truancy and education ministers including Rob Stokes and Dan Tehan have refused to support the strike (Hannam 2019). Despite these warnings, there was a huge turn up of students across the nation, exemplifying the importance with which Australian students consider the issue of climate change action.
 ‘No Planet B’
In Melbourne CBD, a strong police presence was established to assist in crowd control and interruption to traffic as students descended on Exhibition Street protesting outside the Liberal Party Headquarters (Truu 2019). Protesters were also in the company of the media, many of whom appeared to be conducting interviews with school children and onlookers.

In this peaceful protest, school strikers focused on the upcoming federal election, pressuring the Federal MP to commit to three main targets: stop the Adani coal mine, no new fossil fuels and 100% renewable energy by 2030. Hundreds of students made their voices heard, bringing with them hand drawn banners and #StopAdani flyers.
Families of many students were also in attendance, many of whom stood alongside their children in support as well as for supervision purposes as students as young as 9 and 10 were participating in the climate strike.
For 2 hours, these young Australians protested energetically for their future and their rights to a healthy planet. It was an enlightening experience to witness how awareness and action has transcended the boundaries of voting age into the hands of school kids.
The younger generation has frequently been dubbed as lazy and this clearly contradicts that claim. School Strike 4 Climate has already established its next protest at the federal election polling booths on May 18 and shows no signs of backing down until commitments are made.
If a 10-year old can recognise the qualms of climate change inaction, we can only hope our leaders are smarter than a fifth grader.
