Breastfeeding Support Critical for New Moms Struggling to Meet Goals
New York - April, 2024 - For most new mothers, the decision to breastfeed is an easy one. Plentiful research confirms breast milk provides optimal nutrition for infants and tremendous health benefits for both baby and mom. However, the actual process of establishing a successful breastfeeding routine is often fraught with obstacles that derail many women from meeting their intended goals.
So many mothers enter into breastfeeding with the perception that it's this magical, blissful experience where biology simply takes over. When reality sets in - the struggles with latch, supply issues, pain, exhaustion - it can feel like hitting a brick wall. The guilt, disappointment, and pressure is overwhelming.
Indeed, the latest CDC data reveals while over 80% of new moms initiate breastfeeding, that number plummets to just 25% still exclusively breastfeeding at 6 months despite recommendations to continue for at least one year. Clearly, lack of breastfeeding support and education is a driving factor in those dwindling percentages over time.
Tap into Resources
For Rita, a first-time mom, accessing professional lactation support in those critical early days was key. At her hospital's insistence, she met with a lactation consultant before being discharged to establish proper techniques.
As a working mom, she wanted to breastfeed for at least the first six months. But when they finally went home, she could not get her son to latch at all between the nipple shield, pumping frustrations, and excruciating pain. Thankfully, her hospital stay and pediatrician connected her with outpatient lactation resources to get personal coaching and find solutions. She rented a hospital-grade pump, diagnosed tongue and lip tie issues through a lactation counselor, utilized a nipple shield, and rented a milk warmer for easier nighttime feedings.
Building that village of breastfeeding mentors is critical, whether through hospital resources, local support groups, consultants, or even just seasoned mom friends who successfully nursed.
You need a cheerleader, a coach, a tutor - it's a steep learning curve no matter how prepared you think you are. Having those touchpoints, people who can look, watch, listen and help troubleshoot makes all the difference for so many moms.
Seek Preventative Measures
In addition to cultivating real-life support, new moms should take preventative steps even before birth to equip themselves for breastfeeding success.
The more you can learn, surround yourself with resources, and be your own advocate ahead of time, the easier it will be to persevere through obstacles. Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn't mean it will be intuitive without effort.
Some preventative tips from breastfeeding experts:
Take prenatal breastfeeding courses through your hospital or private providers
Read books and consume online resources from respected, current authors
Research local support groups and consultants you can contact for help
Invest in tools like nursing pillows, nipple balms, milk storage bags, and high-quality pumps
Have your pediatrician check baby's mouth and lip/tongue mobility before leaving hospital
Stay hydrated and rested as possible in lead up to birth
Breastfeeding is a Learned Skill
Too often, societal norms and outdated advice compound struggles for new moms trying to establish breastfeeding routines. Ingrained notions of it being a natural, intuitive skill create shame and stigmas around challenges.
Advocates stress shifting perspectives and fostering compassion for the bumpy realities of breastfeeding. Mom and baby are both complete novices attempting coordination of complex maneuvers involving latch techniques, milk supply/transfer, schedules and more.
It's also important to educate partners and family members on how instrumental their support and hands-on help will be. Breastfeeding is a team effort where moms need backup with household duties, prioritizing rest, providing emotional reassurance, preparation for appointments, and constant encouragement.
Setting Realistic Expectations
At the end of the day, being cognizant of breastfeeding complexities allows for setting realistic expectations crucial for preventing unnecessary guilt or shame.
It's a delicate balance of encouraging breastfeeding for the myriad benefits while validating it is rarely as seamless as cultural narratives suggest. Leaning on professionals to troubleshoot and leveraging any available lactation resources is simply the smartest step for the majority of women.
Even if you take every possible class, you will inevitably face some sort of issue, whether latch problems, supply dips, pumping hurdles or painful complications like clogged ducts," says Thompson. "That's completely normal and no one should feel remorseful about seeking skilled support to fix them."
More Than Worth It
Despite the hardships, breastfeeding advocates insist that not giving up reaps invaluable rewards for mom and baby. With patience, coaching and commitment, most obstacles can be overcome.
The breastfeeding journey allows for a baby's optimal nutrition while boosting immunity, brain development, bonding, and myriad other benefits. Mothers gain advantages like enhanced postpartum recovery, hormonal balance, burning of pregnancy weight, and even reduced cancer risks.
Those early days are treacherous, but eventually you enter these sweet spots where breastfeeding becomes second nature - comforting, soothing, and this indescribable gift. It's restorative for both baby and mom when you can power through those labor-like initiation pains and struggles.
With realistic expectations, open minds, and trusted support networks to lean on, breastfeeding providers insist new moms can persevere through even the rockiest starts to capture those magical rewards awaiting on the other side. Balance the role of mother and work is not easy, although more than ¾ of the women choose to work with family life.
To continue the professional path without harming the family and children.Good organizational skills and a rigorous and coherent program must be developed.
Frequently asked questions about working mothers
In his new book, "A ce soir," the famous American pediatrician, Perry Brazelton, answers all the questions that concern mothers.
How can coordination between family life and work?
Dr. Perry Brazelton says: "One of the most common problems that working mothers face is the problem that a mother faces between caring for her child and resuming work.
A woman thinks she can take care of both sides, but she can't do both well.
It takes a woman to be a "superhero" and that's tough, because every woman sets herself goals that are realistically impossible to achieve in both areas.
Today, the various tasks of parents who have a child accumulate, such as feeding, work and marital relationship.
The more parents pay attention, the more difficult each of these tasks becomes."
On the other hand, and through experience, know that children primarily need parents who are more flexible and courteous if they are working.
It is important to tell mothers who entrust their children to other people that they will not be completely unhappy.
But the result is that they get used to being separated from their children without much pain.
But beware the problem affects the man as well, because many men do not like to do household tasks, or prepare food for his child.
Despite the necessity for this to happen, the woman tries to prove herself in competition at work, she leads, makes decisions and completes her mission.
When a woman successfully performs both tasks, the man feels subconscious fear; Where he discovers that the "weaker" sex is in fact the stronger sex.
Few of us as parents actively participate in their homes when they are young, so the young father has to discover something new in himself.
In the past men could only fit into their family life with the authorization of their wives, and today they have to be present.
Their role in their new family is an investment one, they feel a personal happiness overwhelmed by absent fathers.
The importance of the father in the child development :
What are the child benefits when his father takes care of him?
There are several child benefits from the care of his parents.
As the involuntary competition between the parents urges them to idealism that creates a positive environment for the child.
Father Partnership:
Father partnership enables you to reconcile family life and work.
It is necessary to involve the father and share household tasks, the mother must accept the fact that she cannot do everything alone.
On the part of the father, he must participate in family life, and the duties of the parents should be perfectly balanced in the home.
This is very important so that the mother can have a successful job that does not affect her personal life.
Specifically, it is helpful to make a list of different tasks on a daily basis.
They must be classified according to their nature and positioned in such a way that they are adapted to the father and the mother.
So interviews with teachers, and appointments with the pediatrician or dentist do not have to be the mother's business on a regular basis, but rather on a rotating basis.
Having a sense of organization:
The division of tasks indicates a sense of organization.
Again, mothers should not think that they can do it all, and fathers should not think that they can do it all.
The best possible approach is to establish a schedule of activities.
Children can be given some processes that they deal with well, which is a way of showing their parents' confidence in them.
In preparing the 'family' timeline, everyone should express themselves and have a say.
A new opinion is always welcome and will bring about improvements in the organization of the home.
Many studies show that children who have parents participate in care positively.
They reach school age with the best QI scores and also have the best chances of success.
These children have the best relationships with other children, have a mild temperament, and have a strong self-image.
The presence of the father not only provides many opportunities to strengthen the bonds of the family but also for the child.
How can a mother meet the needs of her child?
Only the mother or the father knows how they can provide their child with all the care he needs.
Dr. Perry Brazelton says: “In the United States, about 25% of children spend their childhood with a parent for a variety of reasons.
In such cases, a parent who stays with the child needs more help and understanding.”
"The official, whether the mother or the father, should not hesitate to seek help from the pediatrician, grandparents, friends, etc..,
We must deal appropriately from the outset with the questions posed by children who wish to know the reasons why they or their families are different from others."
"It is not about interfering before the child is at the level of understanding, but the ability to answer the child without feeling the need to apologize or defend."
If the mother is facing this issue, she must be prepared to say to her child:
“It is with us that every family is different and lives in its own way.
In the house there is no father, but on the contrary, there is only a grandfather and he may one day be a father to us. Waiting for this we must love each other very much.”
Children need this kind of conviction tinged with strength and frankness in order to be supported in their classes with their colleagues as well as in themselves.
But beware, parents often tend to keep their child in childish behavior such as feeding for long periods, or using the breast or straw as a pacifier.
Also, the field of nutrition is worthwhile, when neglecting to encourage the child to gain his independence, he may sometimes end up refusing food.
When the mother is alone she should not feel trapped, and she should teach her son to separate in small doses.
If not, she is at risk of making some kind of sudden cut when she pledges her baby to someone else and also by stifling his own feelings.
The mother has to know how to caress her child and create an atmosphere of fun at home.
When she's raising her child alone, it can be hard to remember that having fun leads to a balanced life.
In the work and at home, two different behaviors:
Women do not behave in the same way at work and at home, so how can they reconcile the two behaviors?
"The woman in this situation needs to think carefully about the two roles she must fill and combine them in parallel," says Dr. Perry Brazelton.
Women must summon all their potentials in their dreams and lives.
When a mother feels thriving, it inevitably benefits the family as a whole.
Studies indicate that successful and happy women at work have greater chances of success in their family life and their role as a mother.
At work, women need to be realistic, take distances on the emotional level, and show voluntariness, directness and effectiveness in the way they work.
On the other hand, an active mother is liable to be a bad mother with her children.
Because it should be soft and warm at home and be ready for experiments and lessons.
She has to be open to changes, she has to always expect things to not go well and be able to compensate.
She must be able to move quickly and without hesitation from one character to another and be the secret to success in both very different roles.
Separation - return - things that must be gradual:
Dr. Perry Brazelton says: “Every parent should have their own answer, and a good understanding of their relationships with their child (her child) helps them make the decision.
Whatever the period of separation, both parents or one of them needs a period of respite during which they can learn how to deal with their child.
It is foolish to think that a young child does not realize that he is in the hands of someone he does not know.
On the contrary, we think that the child is fully aware that he is under the care of strangers who take care of him for 4-6 weeks.”
When a child reaches the age of one, he will take his first steps alone or lean on furniture.
They are the first signs towards true independence, accompanied by an increased sense of self-reliance.
Young children show a real fear of new situations when it comes to changing their environment.
These possibilities should be avoided as much as possible.
Thus, the child is less exposed to shock, and we also do not forget that moving away from the child should not be surprising.
Rather, the child must be accustomed to cycles of distance and encounter, by placing him with a third person.
But we must know that all or most of the children regress to an earlier stage of their development when the mother resumes her work.
When the people around him give him confidence too early in themselves, the decline will be temporary and the mother feels that her child is able to tolerate the hatred of separation.
It is a stage that you should not worry about.
The secrets of balancing work and raising a child:
Dr. Berry offers several secrets to balancing work and raising a child.
He says:“Steps should not be rushed, nor should you expect to take control of the situation at short intervals when it comes to fulfilling the two important tasks.
You must bear the difficulty of defining each of them, for example, think carefully before choosing a nursery or a nursery to take care of your child.
If you take the full time breastfeeding, you can devote your time completely to your work, and be in close contact with her. Trust your child's ability to adapt to a third person."
"Feel free to treat your child your way and let the other person do that as well.
Your child will quickly get used to this change, while he will be upset by an angry person next to him forced to deal with him in an unusual way."
If you're under stress during the workday, try to be as extreme as possible before going home.
Your family needs all the energy you can put in to it, and the old English tradition of having a cup of tea upon return will help you relax.
We must point out the importance that the quality of time we spend with our children is more important than the quantity.
Set aside an hour or two a week for each child, during which time you are completely alone with him at his disposal.
It is not important how you spend these two hours, but the important thing is that you are for him alone, even if you can only devote one hour to him.
It will surely be remembered for the rest of the week.
Of course, there will be other times when the child will want to be with you.
If you're too busy, you can say to him, "At the moment it's impossible, but don't forget that at the weekend we have an appointment with the two of us and we'll do whatever you like.
I am so happy to be able to spend some time with you."
And even though you'll feel guilty all week, you'll be confident that these special moments will make up for the hours of separation.
These will be special and precious times that you share with your child and that should not be overlooked.
balance the work and family life?
Other recommendations:
- Teach your child to take part in taking care of the house, and you can motivate him by teaching him this as a real game.
- Participate in household chores with your husband, as these chores are not entrusted to women only.
It concerns the whole family and if you have an emergency it is important that your husband help you at home.
- Be attentive to simple meals and fill the refrigerator.
- Don't get caught up in work all night or weekend, and make sure the time you spend with your child is as enjoyable as possible.
Whether in terms of food, going home, shopping, times when the child is suffering or while on vacation.
- All women who work should take regular breaks to change their thoughts.
But the worst that can happen to him: lack of money, loss of energy, all claims are favorable so that we don't spend too much on fun times.
However, this would change many things.
- You also have to be realistic about what you hope for both for you and for your baby. It is impossible to be a "super mom."
This has disadvantages and may cause them more difficulties than benefits.
The desired goal is the cohesion of the family, and if you succeed in this, you have certainly achieved something great.
- In the end, it is not ingratitude from you to work and raise your children, this matter is within the reach of everyone.
But if we want to do that we have to bear the obstacles, your greatest reward will be when you see your children in a state of balance and in a good psychological state.
And when they reach puberty they will be able to differentiate the two great poles of your business and your family.

How much protein should you eat?
Tumblr media
The recommended daily amount (RDA) for protein is 0.8g per kg of bodyweight. At 175lbs (79kg) you would eat 63g of protein. Does that sound like enough? The RDA guideline is intended to meet minimum requirements for nitrogen balance in healthy moderately active people. Essentially, RDA is useful if your goal is to consume the minimum amount of protein to prevent disease. But what if you’re trying to gain muscle? Lose fat? Gain strength, improve performance, or improve your energy?  If you’re thinking your protein needs might be higher, you’re thinking correctly.
Before we talk about protein requirements, I think it’s important that we mention weight training. Weight training is the catalyst for muscle growth. As you place greater stress on your muscle tissue by adding weight to the bar or reps to your sets we force the need for adaptation. The adaptation is larger and stronger muscle tissue to accommodate your next bout of exercise. The training is the catalyst and protein is the raw materials your muscles need to grow and recover.
Tumblr media
If you’re not consuming enough protein you may eventually fall short of your goals. Consuming too little protein too long and you could find yourself; lacking energy, experiencing prolonged soreness, with increased body fat,  eventually loss of muscle (think flabby where muscle used to be), your hair may thin, be more prone to injury, and your cognition could suffer.
Protein makes up organs and muscles, helps with enzymatic processes to make energy, and it provides the building blocks for various hormones and amino acids that are used to make neurotransmitters for your brain. If there is not enough protein in your diet, your body will pull protein FROM your muscle tissue. Which can lead to the less than desirable effects mentioned above. All of these processes have a cost (the cost is dietary protein). This is why most lifters and athletes find that more protein is required than RDA for performance and physique improvement. You’re asking your body to do more “work” which requires more of an investment from dietary protein to meet all your body’s needs.
So how much?
A review published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition concluded:
“Those involved in strength training might need to consume as much as 1.6 to 1.7 grams of protein per kilogram per day. While those undergoing endurance-based training might need 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram per day.”
This means, for a weight trainer weighing 175lbs, a protein intake of 126g to 134g per day. For an endurance athlete, 95g to 126g would be needed per day.
In my own experience, whether in coaching or with myself, even more protein may be needed. Thankfully, there is research to support this. A study published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism evaluated the effects of dietary protein on body composition in calorically restricted (burning more calories than consuming) resistance-trained athletes. It aimed to provide protein recommendations for these athletes.
Their results indicated “the range of 2.3 to 3.1 grams per kg of fat-free mass is the most consistently protective against the losses of lean tissue.” That’s 2-3g of protein per kg of lean tissue to conserve muscle mass. Continuing with our 175lbs example. This person could intake 158g to 237g of protein per day.
If you’re not an athlete and trying to lose fat how does this apply to you? Remember if you are trying to lose fat, you’re likely calorically restricted, and if the protein isn’t high enough you can lose muscle tissue. Losing muscle is losing FUNCTION! What do I mean? Well, carbohydrates are stored in the body in 2 main places 1. Your liver (stores ~100g) 2. Your muscles (~400g -The glycogen storage capacity of skeletal muscle increases as your muscle mass increases- read that again). When your body needs energy it can break down the stored carbohydrate (glycogen) and release it into the blood for your cells to use to make energy. If you’re losing muscle tissue, let's say fast-twitch fiber (where the majority of muscle glycogen is stored) you’re losing the ability to store glycogen. Remember more muscle means more storage capacity for carbohydrates - losing muscle means you literally have less places to store glycogen and you lose energy reserves.
What happens if you’re losing more slow-twitch muscle? Well, our slow-twitch or endurance muscle has the highest mitochondria count. Remember from high school biology - mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells. These organelles help us make energy (ATP) from our food. If you’re losing muscle you’re losing energy storage capacity and likely decreasing the amount of ATP - life-sustaining energy- you can generate! If you’re generating less ATP from the fat and carbohydrates you eat that can translate to decreased performance, loss of strength, and endurance. Losing muscle will yield less energy reserve capacity and decreased ability to make energy-losing function.
Now, what do we do with all this information? What should YOU intake? If you have healthy kidneys (easy to find out with blood work) and have no preexisting conditions suggesting limiting protein, Aim for 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight and overtime see what differences you notice in your recovery, muscle mass, body fat percentage, energy levels, and performance.
What would 175g of protein look like on a plate during your day? I would split the protein evenly across 5 feedings. This makes it much easier to consume your protein requirements.
175g protein divided evenly into 5 meals equals 35g protein per meal.
Breakfast (Meal 1) 3 whole eggs, 4 egg whites
Snack (Meal 2) 1.5scoops protein powder (various on brand most supply 20-25g per scoop)
Lunch (Meal 3) 3.5oz chicken breast
Snack (Meal 4) 1.5scoops protein powder (various on brand most supply 20-25g per scoop)
Dinner (Meal 5) 3.5oz flank steak
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOTE: This is just an example of how you could consume 175g of protein. It is not a suggested meal plan. You would need to add the desired amount of vegetables, carbohydrates, and fats to your daily meals for a well-rounded nutritional approach. I have found most people prefer a mix of carbs and fats for their energy requirements. We will expand on this in the future. It’s important to use a mix of protein sources, there's no magic in the sources mentioned above. These are protein sources I have favored over the years. I’ve also felt a high-quality protein shake can make meeting protein needs easier. Simply adding these 2 shakes adds 70g of protein, it’s time-efficient and involves less preparation.
Aim for 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight and over time see what differences you notice in your recovery, muscle mass, body fat percentage, energy levels, and performance. This makes it painfully easy to calculate, hop on your scale. If you weigh 190lbs, eat 190g protein, if you weigh 167lbs eat 167g; you get the idea. Divide that number by 5 meals and make a plan that’s sustainable for you to meet your protein needs! Adequate protein is especially important if you are weight training, desire to gain muscle, minimize fat gain, or optimize recovery and performance.

The Code and other safeguards threatened by UN Voluntary Guidelines on Food
The Code and other safeguards threatened  by corporate friendly Voluntary Guidelines on Food Systems and Nutrition.
The Plenary session of the UN  Committee on Word Food Security (CFS47) ended on the 11th February, after several weeks of intense negotiations over the  CFS VOLUNTARY GUIDELINES ON FOOD SYSTEMS AND NUTRITION (VGFSyN)
IBFAN has been a member of the CFS’ Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples’ Mechanism (CSM) for many years and has contributed to the development of the 2014 Rome Declaration on Nutrition, spoken at CFS events and worked on these Guidelines.  In recent years the CFS has moved to a ‘multi-stakeholder mode’ with a Private Sector Mechanism (PSM) that has become larger and more influential over the years. This commercial influence is evident.(1)
It has been painful to watch the negotiations on the Guidelines and see powerful exporting nations attempt to undermine the status of UN treaties and resolutions.(2)
The USA and the International Code
The CFS VOLUNTARY GUIDELINES ON FOOD SYSTEMS AND NUTRITION (VGFSyN) cover a huge range of issues and the near final draft contained several useful paragraphs on breastfeeding and marketing.  However, during the discussions, the US shocked everyone when it single-handedly removed text that would curtail marketing.
We hoped that the statement of Dr Fauci, chief medical advisor to President Biden, at WHO’s Executive Board, signalled a welcome new approach to global health.  Sadly, new US appointees are not in position everywhere and the delegates to the CFS  did everything they could to undermine the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes.  They succeeded in removing all references to Regulations and to the Code’s subsequent relevant WHA Resolutions – safeguards that been been included in drafts since the start of negotiations (1).  The final US-approved paragraph may look benign,  but will  certainly be used by baby food industry to advocate for weak measures to control harmful marketing:
3.5.1.d “Governments should implement measures or national mechanisms related to the marketing of commercial infant formula and other breast milk substitutes aimed at giving effect to the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes (fn58), as well as other WHO evidence-based recommendations, where applicable, in line with national legislations. Governments should monitor and continue to assess the impact of their measures. (fn58) International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes. WHO, 1981. Geneva
How did this happen?  On the final days of the negotiations we could not speak again because CSM had withdrawn from the negotiations.  After all its strengthening amendments had been blocked by the US,  Norway, supported by Canada, Russia and UN Nutrition attempted to correct the footnote 58 to ensure it included the Resolutions along with the correct  link on the WHO website. (4) Canada stressed that the work done over 40 years to update the Code was very important. WHO, as part of UN Nutrition, explained that it has always been WHO’s position that the Code has to be seen in conjunction with the subsequent Resolutions, as one body. The fact that a member state disassociates itself from a Resolution, does not nullify that it should not be referred to. WHO created the new link to ensure that the Code and all the Resolutions related to marketing could easily be read together.
The US said it would not support any mention of the Resolutions because it had disassociated itself from a number of them.(5) It would, however, accept the original Code (which it didn’t vote for in 1981) and ‘evidenced-based’ recommendations ‘where applicable’  that are ‘in line with national legislations.’  In terms of increasing the protection of breastfeeding and maternal and young child health from harmful marketing, the paragraph brings everything down to the lowest common denominator, especially  for those countries that have weak or non-existent legislation. With no support for their proposal, and the chair wanting to close the debate, the US threatened to open up the most contentious footnote (39BIS) knowing that to do so would trap everyone into endless further discussion. The Chair moved quickly to adopt the Footnote as the US wanted.
During the Plenary session on 10th February and later, a number of Member States made oral and written statements ((Norway statement ) about the weaknesses in guidelines, with some regretting the weak paragraph on the Code. Dr Yamamoto, Chair of UN Nutrition (the newly-merged UNSCN and UN Network for Scaling Up Nutrition(SUN)  ) referred to the Resolutions, saying it was of  the utmost importance that infant and young child health is not put at risk (see webcast  Day 3 Afternoon 21-26 mins ).  Dr Francesca Branca of WHO (Day 3 Afternoon  49-52) made a strong statement about the importance of tackling harmful marketing including through the Code and WHA Resolutions,  regulations and fiscal measures, sugar taxes etc. Gerda Verburg, Executive Director of SUN  (Day 3 morning, 2.40) said she did not want to see the Code weakened in anyway and that the Guidelines should not replace resolutions and Codes that have already been agreed, such as the International Code and Resolutions. However, since SUN is a Public Private Partnership,  she also called on baby food companies to promote breastfeeding. It is not clear what was meant by this, because WHA Resolutions have clear Conflict of Interest rules regarding baby food involvement in infant and young child feeding.  The last thing parents and children need is a Nestlé sponsored breastfeeding poster.
In frustration over the process the CSM decided to leave the Guidelines negotiations, remaining as observers.  The CSM will make a decision on whether or not to endorse the Guidelines, only after consultation with its member constituents.
At the Plenary CFS47 the following week the Guidelines were noted and will go forward to the UN Food Systems Summit scheduled to take place in New York in September 2021 in conjunction with the UN General Assembly, preceded by a pre-Summit in Italy in July 2021.
(Page down to see what happened to the Code). Click here for the CSM statements that explain why the Guidelines are so bad. Also statements from the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Michael Fakhri. Below Isa Ivarez reads CSM Statement on 4 February 2021
Statement from the High Commissioner for Human Rights
“…The Guidelines should have acknowledged and promoted the responsibilities of the States in regulating businesses’ activities to promote the availability and accessibility of healthy diets, including through fiscal incentives and disincentives. In this context, the Guidelines could have stressed the responsibilities of the private sector to do no harm and respect human rights, including the right to food and the right to health of the population at large and of children in particular.”
For more statements page down
Speech by Shalmali Gutta, Focus on the Global South.  10 February
“…we have a document that does not protect broad based public interest, public health, our eco-systems; or the rights and capacities of the millions of small-scale food producers, workers and communities who have built multiple, diverse food systems around the world, and who are the proven lifelines of our societies, economies and environments.
Instead, we have document that protects a system of globalised, corporate dominated trade, investment and finance, that benefit the world’s 10 percent, but has wreaked havoc on our planet and majority of the world’s people …..We reiterate our concern that the Summit is advancing a dangerous, deceptive and insidious form of multi-stakeholderism in the multilateral system of the United Nations, which:
blurs the identities and responsibilities of rights holders and duty bearers;
through the language of “partnerships” enables wealthy, powerful corporations and their organisational extensions to assume crucial decision-making positions with no democratic accountability..”
CSM withdraws from the negotiations on 29 January 2021 by Sofia Monsalve (FIAN)
“It was with a heavy heart that we walked out of the session of the Friends of the Chair session earlier this afternoon. After all, the reformed CFS is an open body to the participation of the constituencies most affected by hunger and food insecurity.”

Some notable Excerpts from Statements made on February 10th
WHO (and UNICEF)
In the context of the negotiation we have expressed the concern that, in the spirit of compromise the text of the Voluntary Guidelines does not fully reflect the recommendations of mandated international bodies and normative agencies. This is not going to be beneficial to public health. Examples include among others – removing recommendations on ’fiscal policies’ or ‘economic tools that may include taxes and subsidies’ in the recommendations on improving availability and affordability of food that contributes to healthy diets – removing the reference to “subsequent relevant WHA resolutions” in the description of efforts to support breastfeeding and implementation of the Code of Marketing Breastmilk Substitutes; – weakening the language to “avoid inappropriate marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages to children” – the removal of reference to the elimination of use of antimicrobials for growth promotion
Australia
“…..We respectfully offer three reflections on the development of the guidelines that may be useful to consider in future processes.
“… There is a need for all Members and stakeholders to be mindful of the diversity in national circumstances and not try to insert their preferred approach into every paragraph of a document which, by design, must be adaptable to national contexts when implemented.”

Hundreds of civil society organizations worldwide denounce World Economic Forum´s takeover of the UN  17.1.20
(2) One of the most contentious issues was a  Footnote to Para 39 that undermined a whole range of Treaties and Resolutions. A US proposal (eventually not accepted)  read:   “Treaties in the list below are only relevant for the parties to each respective treaty; other documents listed are not legally binding and reference to them shall not be interpreted as a sign of support or acknowledgement by countries that abstained or voted against their adoption and have not since then expressed their support.” Friday 29th January the CSM to leave the negotiations on 29th January and we stayed on in the negotiations as an observer only.
(3) Chairs proposal for first draft October 2019 The 19 subsequent relevant WHA Resolutions are critically important in the protection of breastfeeding and maternal and child health and have helped governments forbid marketing techniques such as health and nutrition claims, free and low-supplies of breastmilk substitutes and misleading marketing of baby foods. Eight resolutions have called for conflicts of interest safeguards, not only in health care but also in monitoring.
(4) Proposed Amendment by Norway supported by Canada, Russia, UN Nutrition:  (57) International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes. WHO, 1981 Geneva. ADD: and subsequent relevant WHA resolutions https://www.who.int/nutrition/netcode/resolutions/en/
(5) The US was the only country to vote against the Code in 1981.  However in 1994, under the Clinton administration a consensus was reached to support a Resolution condemning company donations to health care systems. During the debate, African delegations vehemently rejected the assumption that Africa needed the donations, that are nothing more than a promotional technique.  Kenya stated that if the issue came to a vote, it would insist on a roll call of member states “so that those who are unfair to babies, would be known by name.”  (See Update 14, October 1994, Page 6) Since 1994 the US has endorsed all subsequent WHA resolutions – which generally recall all previous Resolutions. The Codex Infant Formula Standard which the US endorsed, The application of this section of the Standard should take into account the recommendations made in the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes (1981), the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding and World Health Assembly resolution WHA54.2 (2001) [WHA54.2 recalls 11 previous WHA Resolutions]

The global eyelashes enhancing agents market is expected to rise at a strong 5.83% CAGR over the forecast period from 2017 to 2023, according to the latest research report from Market Research Future (MRFR). The global eyelashes enhancing agents market is mainly driven by the growing prevalence of ocular conditions around the world, driven by the growing air pollution, among other factors. The growing attention paid by cosmetics manufacturers to the production of eyelashes enhancing agents is also likely to be a major driver for the market over the forecast period.
Eyelash enhancing serums are formulas that contain nutritive, strengthening, conditioning, and moisturizing components to deliver a comprehensive upgrade to the eyelashes. This important part of a person’s face has become all the more important with the rise of cosmetics. While eyelashes have always been a key part of a woman’s (and to a lesser extent, man’s) aesthetic getup, their conditioning and enhancement has now taken precedence thanks to the growing availability of a number of cosmetic products especially designed to enhance the eyelashes and add to their characteristics in a meaningful way.
The rising prevalence of diseases such as madarosis and blepharitis is likely to drive the eyelashes enhancing agents market over the forecast period. Cancer patients, especially breast cancer patients, often suffer from madarosis as a result of intensive radiotherapy procedures. As a result, the growing prevalence of cancer could also act as a key driver for the global eyelashes enhancing agents market over the forecast period.
A growth in the demand for natural ingredients in eyelashes enhancing formulations could emerge as a key determinant for the global eyelashes enhancing agents market over the forecast period. The demand for natural ingredients has been a feature of the overall medical sector in the last few years and could end up as an important factor for the eyelashes enhancing agents market over the forecast period as well.

So You Lost Your Health Insurance
Tumblr media
Millions of Americans are feeling the stress of losing their jobs and as a result, their health insurance. But what if I told you that losing your health insurance could actually be a blessing in disguise? What if I told you that there is an opportunity in that loss...an opportunity for growth, and perhaps, with a bit of determination on your part, to reach and maintain your highest health potential?
When I was in high school in the '70s I developed an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa that flipped into bulimia) that lasted 10 years. Sure, I had insurance. But it was the pre-Karen Carpenter era, so no doctors or counselors had a clue---which made my insurance worthless! Nowadays they might prescribe a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, but I am so glad those didn't exist back then. Drugs do not get to the root of the problem and often have side effects nearly as bad, if not worse, than the illness.
Convinced I had to heal myself, I took eight university classes in psychology searching for a cure. But nothing worked till I moved to Mexico and got away from all the processed trigger foods. I also started taking super foods like bee pollen and brewer's yeast, and... suddenly the eating disorder, which had been a 10-year hell for me, simply vanished! 10 years of praying and seeking a cure for my mind by reading psychology and self help books ended. I got well only after healing the body, not the mind.
I then knew the importance of nutrition as the principle key to health. Through the years I experimented with health modalities, even got a master's degree in Chinese medicine and did acupuncture for a while. But I noticed herbs were even more effective than needles. The conviction grew that what a person puts into his or her mouth has the greatest effect of all.
When I discovered the cleansing and rejuvenating power of a raw food diet, my health soared! I was free from hepatitis C, PMS that had me depressed three weeks of the month, athlete's foot, brain fog, herpes, even jet lag! I devoured every book on the raw food diet and came across a multitude of testimonials-people healing from disease without drugs or surgery. Victoria Boutenko, for example, was healed of arrhythmia and her husband of hyperthyroidism. Their son was cured of juvenile diabetes and their daughter of asthma. After just a few months on the diet, they were all going on extended hikes, bursting with energy!
Reverend George Malkmus healed himself of colon cancer...David Klein defeated colitis...Roe Gallo conquered a highly allergic sensitivity to the 20th century chemicals...Lou Corona healed from a head tumor...Dr. Lorraine Day reversed breast cancer...Angela Stokes lost 159 pounds... Jenny Smith no longer sleepwalks. The list goes on and on.
"But what about accidents?" you might be protesting. Yes, you might want to get a very high deductible insurance in case of accidents. But consider this: I know of people who even used raw foods as a main part of healing from accidents. Take Aajonous Vonderplanitz, for example. Four MDs told him that his son, injured from a car accident, would be brain dead for life. But using raw foods, Aajonous got his son to come out of the coma with a full recovery of his brain and muscles. His son went on to graduate from a university. (Aajonous details the entire story in his book We Want to Live.)
Then there is Dr. Joe Dispenza (who appears in the films What the Bleep Do We Know? and What If? and tells his story in his book Evolve Your Brain). Joe was injured in a car accident and was diagnosed with "multiple compression fractures of the thoracic spine with the T-8 vertebra more than 60% collapsed." The doctors recommended Harrington rod surgery, but Joe was haunted by all the patients he had seen that had had this surgery. They never really healed, never regained their spinal flexibility, and many lived the rest of their lives addicted to pain medications. Filled with the conviction of the body's innate power to heal itself, he rejected surgery and used raw foods plus visualization to heal himself.
Researchers are starting to learn that what you eat impacts your health more than anything, even genetics. What you eat feeds your genes toward health or degeneration. A friend of mine who eats a 100% raw diet says her friends are horrified when they find out she doesn't have health insurance. She replies, "My health insurance is what I put into my mouth."
Even if you don't want to eat a largely raw diet, switching to whole foods goes a long way. (Don't eat anything from a box, can, bag, or jar.) Get more alkaline by eating more greens (salads, green smoothies, wheat grass juice, chlorella, spirulina, blue-green algae). Avoid the worst culprits (wheat, dairy, table salt, sugar, transfats, monosodium glutamate, aspartame).
Also learn to use supplements instead of drugs. When I had hepatitis C, I took several pills of milk thistle three times a day. When I went back for a test, the MD was astonished to find that my liver enzymes were to be envied! My sister was hooked on a prescription drug and when she lost her insurance, if she didn't keep buying it (spending $200 a month!) she couldn't sleep at all. When I got her a month's supply of tryptophane and told her to gradually reduce the drug while taking this supplement, she was finally able to wean herself off the costly meds.
There are other lifestyle factors besides diet that can make a huge difference in one's health. One of the most important things is to get rid of the toxins in your environment. Get an air purifier and toss the moldy rugs or mattress (especially if you have asthma). Use natural, nontoxic cleaning supplies, makeup, tampons, personal care products, etc.
Exercise is another investment in your health. Vary it so you cover flexibility to prevent injuries and keep the spine youthful (yoga, stretching), endurance and cardiovascular health (walking, running, etc.), as well as strength-building (lifting weights, pushups, etc).
Other factors of health include adequate sleep and rest; supporting relationships; positive thinking; pure air and water; and adequate sunshine during the day so you can absorb Vitamin D.
The truth is that even if you have health insurance, the copayments can bankrupt you if you get a major disease such as cancer and you decide to go the conventional route. (This topic was brought up in the movie Sicko.) And even if you have 100% health insurance, the tendency is to not be proactive in your health. People who have that attitude wait till they get sick, and then expect some pills or surgery to heal them, and then wonder why they never feel good again. Many of these people end up spending a small fortune on alternative therapies that their health insurance didn't cover (after they realize that the conventional route didn't really heal them) because they truly want to regain their health.

Change of paradigm: Breastfeeding is the Norm and anything else is Less. *
*After some valuable exchange of thoughts and suggestions from one of my experienced supervisors, Annelies Allain, I’ve come to the decision to revise my latest entry to make myself clearer on the importance of a need in change of paradigm that confirms Breastfeeding is the Norm and anything else is Less.
I keep getting asked why Penang (let me assure you it’s no vacation, just paradise) and where exactly I’m interning. I try to give an answer people can relate to but I usually end up getting funny looks telling me to let go of this “sophisticated/pretentious” attitude I’m often accused with and start talking human.
Well, I start mentioning the Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, which has become my Bible (Koran if you think it’s more appropriate) and I elaborate on the ICDC’s role as a whistle-blowing, “Big Brother Is Watching You” kinda organisation that tells companies and manufacturers of baby foods to abide by the rules:
Sell your products - Don’t promote them!
Sometimes, I still get the vibe that my gibberish does not seem to convince people how marketing regulations match with my field of studies (Public Health Nutrition).  This is the point where I have no option than mentioning breastfeeding and this also the point where I get the attention of most people as they can all relate to breastfeeding in some way.
Some still feel uncomfortable, imagining or seeing a mother breastfeeding her child - it’s ok if you feel so but please try to change.
However, there is a consensus across the world that breastfeeding is a good practice and the (biological) norm. When I say biological norm, I sincerely try to choose my next words very cautiously as I don’t want to be misunderstood or misinterpreted. It’s is important that we are all on the same page that the aim of the Code is not only to promote and to protect breastfeeding but it also aims to provide adequate information for the proper use of breastmilk substitutes. It ensures, moreover, that companies are hindered from influencing mothers’ decision to use infant formula and protect all infants - those that are breastfed and not breastfed- from misleading and unethical marketing.
Regarding ethical and unethical marketing, let’s see if you agree:
Would you consider the following examples as ethical?
The following example is a harmless brochure from Thailand.
Tumblr media
The picture is actually nice, one would think it promotes breastfeedig
BUT when you open the folder, you see…
Tumblr media
…how Nestlé physically separates the baby from the breast.
P.S.: This is an old example. Nestlé had to stop this practice after receiving complaints from ICDC!
How about the next example from Ethiopia?
Tumblr media
A nurse in the neonatal section wears a uniform embroidered with (Model on the picture is Elsie-ICDC staff and colleague). The uniform does not only provide free advertising for Danone, it also is a medical endorsement of Danone’s products. Do you think mothers are influenced seeing a doctor endorsing Danone’s products? Do you think this creates a conflict of interest?
I’ll talk about conflicts of interest in my next blog episode and also elaborate on how I had the chance to teach health workers from all over the world on the Scope and how I used this opportunity to network at the same time).           For now, I want you to try to understand what unethical marketing can cause.
Jan Bennink, the former Chairman of Dutch Numico (since acquired by French multinational Danone) surprised the Public Health World with his rather bold and FRANK statement saying
“Breastfeeding is the direct competitor of formula.”
Numico is a combination of three brand names - Nutricia, Milupa and Cow & Gate,  now owned by Danone, the second biggest baby food manufacturer. This short and clear statement is a clear admission that the industry is competing with breastfeeding.
This is why there is a movement stressing the importance of a change of paradigm confirming Breastfeeding is the Norm and everything else is LESS:
Less nutritious
Less antibodies
Less sterile
Less bonding
Less expense
and NO living substances
To make it clearer, let’s talk about the example of buying a new car: Most families will buy a car that is good enough, a normal car that will take them form A to B. Very few will think of getting the best, most luxurious car.
Many women also think they don’t need to go for the very best. Many believe that formula is good enough. Hence, we should reassure them that breastfeeding is the norm, not a luxurious “best”. A change in paradigm.
It is important to acknowledge that women do not have any obligation to breastfeed. It is their own body and their own decision to breastfeed or not to breastfeed, provided on the basis of objective information.
Breastfeeding is not an easy practice, it requires, without any doubt, a lot of support on different levels including support from immediate family, health workers, community and most importantly the government by introducing policies such as paid maternity leave, baby friendly hospitals, national regulations etc.
It is no surprise that the industry keeps using the power of language to convince consumers about the similarity of formula to human breastmilk. A quick check on any baby food company will let you recognize that each one is just another wolf in sheep’s clothes, playing the good Samaritan to save babies. Every company will agree that breastfeeding is the best nutrition for babies and each of them will praise their efforts to invest in research to provide a good alternative…out of cow’s milk? Formula is made of cows’ milk. That’s good for calves but not for babies. Calling “Breastfeeding is Best” has offered companies to come up with the idea of providing “Something Good” or “Close to Best” in the first place. This is why we need a change of paradigm that confirms: Breastfeeding is the norm and everything else is less!
Hypothetically, if one says “Breastfeeding is best”, does this mean that “Bottle-feeding is less good? Would it help to increase exclusive breastfeeding rates?
Let us travel back in time and see how bottle-feeding has been criticized in the past:
In 1939, BC, (before the Code), Cicely Williams, presented her talk, “Milk and Murder” on bottle-baby deaths and condensed milk and said that “misguided propaganda on infant feeding should be punished as the most criminal form of sedition, and that those deaths should be regarded as murder.”
In 1968, Dr. Derrick Jelliffe coined the term “commerciogenic malnutrition” to describe the impact of industry marketing practices on infant health. (This term has caught my deep interest and makes me very passionate to look closer at it in future!)
In 1974, War on Want (waronwant.org), an anti-poverty charity based in London, published “The Baby Killer”, a report on infant malnutrition and promotion of artificial feeding in the Third World. Thereupon, a group of students in Switzerland (Third World Action Group) first translated “The Baby Killer” to “Nestlé Kills Babies” and published the translation.
As someone with a background in translation, I admit that this is rather a free, not quite accurate but definitely hell of a successful translation.
Nestlé, a Swiss company and biggest baby food manufacturer, was obviously not quite thrilled by being called a murderer and sued the group for libel.
Two years after hearings, the student group was found guilty of libel, but only for the title and while the students were given a small fine, Nestlé was warned by the judge to change its marketing practices.
Has Nestlé changed? Well, remember the Nestlé boycott? It was launched just shortly after the Nestlé hearings in 1977 by INFACT (Infant Formula Action Coalition) in the US and is until today the longest worldwide boycott in history. So, has Nestlé changed? Clearly not enough AND the boycott is still going on.
Research has shown that low (exclusive) breastfeeding rates are caused, among others, by poor government policies, lack of support for mothers AND by aggressive and relentless marketing of the formula milk industry.
Each year, the deaths of more than 800 000 children can be prevented through universal breastfeeding (Lancet, 2016).
Bottle-feeding puts infants and mothers at many risks that breastfeeding could prevent. Here is a list of some risks that are associated with bottle-feeding:
For infants and children:
Increased risk of asthma
Increased risk of allergy
Increased risk of acute respiratory disease
Increased risk of nutrient deficiencies
Increased risk of chronic diseases
Increased risk of diabetes
Increased risk of cardiovascular disease
Increased risk of obesity
Increased risk of side effects of environmental contaminants
Increased risk of mortality
 For mothers:
Increased risk of breast cancer
Increased risk of overweight
Increased risk of ovarian cancer
Increased risk of osteoporosis
Increased risk of maternal diabetes
Increased risk of stress and anxiety
Source: Risks of Formula Feeding by Infact Canada, 2002 and also confirmed by Lancet Breastfeeding Series, 2016.
In conclusion, if we say “Breastfeeding is best” it means bottle-feeding is never as good. Therefore, a change of paradigm is needed that confirms and emphasises Breastfeeding is the Norm and everything else is LESS.
Have you ever heard of breast crawl - the instinct that babies are born with enabling them to move towards the mother’s nipple and attach to it, all by themselves? Check out the short video (it’s in Spanish but you will get the gist) and ENJOY.
                                          Babies Do Know Best.

Consultation on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Consultation on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Chance to include an indicator for Exclusive Breastfeeding and to define the term ‘Partnership’
Deadline 8th September
The 2020 Comprehensive Review of the global indicator framework to monitor progress on the SDGs has called for  proposals for the replacement/adjustment and addition of  indicators.  One of the is Exclusive breastfeeding another relates to the financing.
You can access the review here: http://bit.ly/2020Review_Consult
You can send your comments/inputs individually or on behalf of your organisation to support the inclusion of Exclusive Breastfeeding as an SDG indicator.
If you have time please also send comments on SDG 17 – Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development. This is an SDG that IBFAN has many concerns about. It is used by those pushing  Public Private Partnerships and Multi-Stakeholder arrangements.  The private sector was invited into the SDG consultations in London and it was clear that  this influenced the outcome.
Here are some  suggestions for text:
Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.
This section includes proposals for replacement, revision, additional and deletion of indicators in Goal 2
Target 2.2: By 2030, end all forms of malnutrition, including achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons
IBFAN comment:
While it is important add an additional indicator to address malnutrition,  care should be taken to avoid over-emphasis on treating micronutrient deficiencies with technical, medicalized, product-based interventions. Much greater focus should be placed on strengthening communities’ self-determination and capacity to feed themselves in dignity, including supporting breastfeeding and locally sourced,  culturally appropriate, minimally processed, nutritious bio-diverse foods. The Target should warn that the inappropriate promotion of product interventions – with health and nutrition claims, social marketing etc,  risks undermining such foods, dependence on ultra-processed food. This can in turn exacerbate overweight, obesity and related non-communicable diseases.
Sustainable agriculture: The indicator should protect sustainable foods  systems and the right to food from bias towards technological solutions, in particular, biofortified seeds and fortified foods, processes that favour large corporations and which entail human rights risks for small-scale food producers, indigenous peoples and consumers. There needs to be a fundamental re-shaping of food systems to support agro-biodiverse production, advance the realization of the rights of small-scale food producers, and promote diversified, healthy and sustainable diets.
While it is important add an additional indicator to address malnutrition care should be taken to avoid over-emphasis on treating micronutrient deficiencies with technical, medicalized, product-based interventions. The highest focus should be placed on strengthening communities’ self-determination and capacity to feed themselves in dignity, including supporting breastfeeding and bio-diverse foods.
If the above indicators are adopted there should also be an indicator related to the implementation and monitoring of the WHA Resolutions referring to the marketing foods for infants and young children and the avoidance of conflicts of interest. These provisions should also cover interventions and products used in the treatment, prevention and management of malnutrition (stunting, wasting etc ) For example, WHA resolution 55.25 Para: 1. 4) calls on Member states to ensure that the introduction of micronutrient interventions and the marketing of nutritional supplements do not replace, or undermine support for the sustainable practice of, exclusive breastfeeding and optimal complementary feeding.”
If there is a specific call regarding  the nutritional needs of lactating women,  is essential that parents are not misled by inappropriate marketing of foods and formulas targeting pregnant and lactating women.
· Exclusive Breastfeeding for 6 months is a WHA target that all member states as well as many development partners have endorsed · Data availability. there are 140 countries with data on EBF in the UNICEF IYCF database, 69 of these in the last 5 years. EBF is already routinely included in global reports every year, including the Global Nutrition Report, the State of Food Security and Nutrition, and the Global Breastfeeding Scorecard. · Importance of breastfeeding and its relevance to other SDGs. It is a key indicator reflecting optimal breastfeeding practices, which is essential to child survival and well-being. Exclusive breastfeeding has the largest potential impact on child mortality of any preventive interventions. The lack of breastfeeding has huge implications for development. It is estimated that not breastfeeding according to recommendation leads to 823,000 deaths in children under five[*] and nearly 100,000 maternal deaths from breast and ovarian cancers and type II diabetes each year.[†] The overall economic loss attributable to inadequate breastfeeding rates is estimated at USD 302 billion in healthcare costs annually.[‡] ·
[*] Victora CG et al. Breastfeeding in the 21st century: epidemiology, mechanisms, and lifelong effect. The Lancet. 2016;387(10017):475-90. [†] Walters, D., et al. The cost of not breastfeeding: global results from a new tool, Health Policy and Planning, 24 June 2019. [‡] Rollins NC et al. Why invest, and what it will take to improve breastfeeding practices? The Lancet. 2016; 387(10017):491-504.
Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.
IBFAN comments on the indicators relating to SDG 17
The revision of the Indicators for SDG17 as proposed above is not sufficient and IBFAN cannot support them in this context. The first priority must be to define the term Partnership and outline effective Conflict of Interest safeguards. Partnerships are, by definition, arrangements for ‘shared governance’ to achieve ‘shared goals.’ Indeed shared decision-making is their single most unifying feature ’. The term ‘Partnership’ implies ‘respect, trust, shared benefits’ The ‘image transfer’ that is gained from UN or NGO ‘partners’ has strong emotional and financial value especially for corporations and those who represent their interests and whose marketing, lobbying and other practices damage health, the environment and human rights. An undefined reference to the term ‘Partnership’ in this context is unwise and inappropriate. Interactions with the Private Sector can be necessary in order to make decisions, however but they must be carefully conceived, planned and managed and must not undermine or subvert the primary mission of States to safeguard citizens Right to Health. If there are to be partnerships, partners MUST share the same primary objective. It is totally inappropriate for policy making to be influenced by commercial considerations as a result of a lack of attention paid to these matters and undue deference paid to private sector interests. . The Private Sector is simply one among many societal actors that must operate within a legal framework determined democratically by people (ideally)/government. In the absence of appropriate definitions and safeguards SDG 17 has been and is being used to fundamentally change the global health and nutrition governance structure. This is undermining States and UN agencies capacity to fulfill their constitutional core functions and their role in proposing health conventions and regulations and the building of the international Rule of Law. As mentioned in comments on SDG2, It is critically important that the SDGs do not lead to over emphasise short-term, technical intervention or undermine measures that address the underlying structural causes of malnutrition and measures to safeguard planetary health. Emphasis should be placed on strengthening communities’ self-determination and capacity to feed themselves in dignity, including supporting breastfeeding and bio-diverse foods
The SDGs should warn that promotion of product interventions risk reliance on ultra-processed food and this can in turn exacerbate overweight, obesity and related non-communicable diseases.
