Vroom nabs $146M from AutoNation, VCs for its used car marketplace
Vroom has raised $146 million in Series G funding, an expansion to a $30 million investment we reported in early September. U.S. automotive retailer AutoNation led the round for the startup, with participation from existing investors T. Rowe Price, L Catterton, General Catalyst and Fraser McCombs Capital.
The company declined to disclose the valuation, but says it was an up round. Vroom was valued at $440 million in 2016 with a $50 million financing, according to PitchBook.
Led by chief executive officer Paul Hennessy, the former CEO of Priceline.com, Vroom is an online platform for buying and selling refurbished, pre-owned cars. The company purchases used vehicles, then includes them in its online catalog, which currently lists just over 3,200 cars. Once it finds a buyer, it provides financing support through a number of lending partners, including CapitalOne and Ally, and delivers the vehicle directly to customers’ doorsteps in the U.S. To date, the company says it has sold 250,000 cars.
Founded in 2013, the company has raised $440 million in equity funding to date, but it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Earlier this year, Vroom laid off roughly 30 percent of its staff after a futile attempt at building brick-and-mortar car dealerships. As a result, Vroom shut down its Dallas dealership, which was where most of the layoffs occurred, Hennessy said. Its Houston dealership is the only in-person effort still up and running.
“Clearly our investors were supportive of the strategic steps we took,” Hennessy told TechCrunch.
Since the layoffs, Vroom has been focused on building out its leadership team. Dave Jones, who spent over a decade at Penske Automotive Group, joined as the company’s chief financial officer; Mitch Berg, who was most recently the senior vice president of technology at dailymotion, was brought on as chief technology officer; and Dennis Looney, a veteran in supply chain management, was tapped as chief supply chain officer.
The infusion of capital is necessary for the five-year-old business, which operates in a capital-intensive industry. Carvana, perhaps its largest competitor in the space, raised $300 million in equity funding and hundreds of millions in debt before going public in 2017. Auto1, a German car trading platform, has raised more than $1 billion, including a significant investment from SoftBank’s Vision Fund earlier this year.
Other digitally native vehicle retailers have fallen on hard times despite venture backing. British startups Hellocar and Carspring both shut down in 2017, and Beepi, a Silicon Valley peer-to-peer used car marketplace, brought in $150 million in VC backing before going out of business last year. Vroom acquired some of Beepi’s software as the company went under.
Vroom’s decision to halt the operations of its physical dealership looks to have satisfied investors, but whether it’s built a sustainable business that can operate without a consistent influx of VC support remains to be seen.

(Foto: ddp images)

Getting Brave With Testing and Triggered Automation
The pains of buying a used car need little introduction. There’s the trial of finding the right one, followed by the tribulations of haggling and financing, not to mention the worry that you’ll end up with a dud.
But Carspring, the United Kingdom’s first online pre-owned car dealership, promises to pair you with the perfect car without the inherent anxieties of vehicular speed-dating. The startup has automated a customer journey that’s designed to make the entire process as smooth as possible. And with rave reports on consumer-review sites, it’s clear that customers appreciate the commitment to communication.
Leaning into a learning curve
Last year on Valentine’s Day, Carspring sent out their first email campaign, and that was all it took to convince the business that email marketing could work for them. Selling cars online requires a lot of moving parts, but with an open rate of 31%, the team was intrigued.
“Looking back on it, it wasn’t the snazziest email ever, but it was really effective,” says Joe Newman, copy editor and email marketing manager. “We saw conversion rates on our sites around 3.8%, which is really good for us when you compare it to our other channels.”
Their open rates continue to skyrocket and are double that of the industry average, reaching 25% or higher.
The move also freed up a lot of manpower. “With MailChimp, email marketing doesn’t require development work,” says co-founder and chief marketing officer Peter Baumgart. “The creatives take control. The developers can focus on making our product better.”
Branching out into segmentation
While tinkering around with A/B testing, Carspring capitalized on a naturally occurring segment in the car industry: brand loyalty. “We see conversion rates as high as 10% on the site as a result of those,” Joe says.
Manual segmentation of a customer’s interest in car brands and a retargeting subject line like “[Name], still looking for a BMW?”, for example, worked well with customers who’d entered their interest on a dream car wish list form.
But they didn’t stop there. Everything from big-picture content to more granular details like From names was subject to relentless testing. “Be a bit brave with it,” Joe suggests. “Prepare yourself to occasionally fail.”
The team hasn’t dived into all the data yet, but they’re planning on more testing, including segmenting by other groups like price brackets, which is information that customers provide when submitting a finance application. In the future, Carspring plans to use MailChimp automation to send wish list emails to people who are looking for specific makes and models, too.
Pleased with MailChimp’s success so far, Carspring decided to migrate their transactional emails to MailChimp—and that unlocked a whole world of triggered automation, Peter says.
A great journey leads to great open rates
A customer’s journey through Carspring is so well-oiled, it’s easy to forget all the cogs that help it chug along. But from the moment a customer reserves a car, they instantly receive emails about where their purchase is in the rigorous preparation process. Being kept in the loop has yielded astronomical open rates, Joe says, with some reaching as high as 80%.
Down the line, Carspring hopes to use those engagement rates to cross-sell other products that are critical to car ownership, such as insurance packages. But making sure customers feel cared for remains a top priority.
As Peter sums it up: “This is only the beginning.”

Car dealer bad credit

room’s decision to halt the operations of its physical dealership looks to have satisfied investors, but whether it’s built a sustainable business that can operate without a consistent influx of VC support remains to be seen.
People hit by a file at the Banque de France, whether it be an FCC or a FICP, have, of course, an incredible difficulty in financing their car, their means of transport, which however is not really a "far-fetched" expense . It is often an investment that will allow you to find work! So how do you get a car if you are prohibited from banking?
A car loan is often a heavy investment. A new car, even with the current super competitive prices, always used car dealerships no credit  costs at least 7000 euros new. We are talking about cars like the Dacia Sandero or the Fiat Panda. It is still a large sum, most people use credit. Suffice to say right away: 7000 euros on credit if is FICP (banking prohibited), it's no. Unless you put your home as a guarantee, since the car itself cannot be used as a guarantee (a car depreciates very quickly, you just have to see the difference between a new car and a car that is already 3 years old).
