BEACHWOOD, Ohio (WOIO) - Outrage is growing Monday over a report that a man took out 100 books from Beachwood Public Library only to burn them.

The books were reportedly on Jewish history, African American history, and LGBTQ+ education, State Sen. Kent Smith shared.

The Beachwood Police Department reported on May 2 the man checked out the hundred books from the Cuyahoga County Public Library Beachwood Branch, and posted a video of him burning the books on social media.

CCPL said it will not comment on this ongoing investigation.

Hi there! This is someone who actually knows more information about the grocery store library, as I've actually been there (Or, at least, an identical building that was being used as a library.)

It was temporary! The library was building a newer, better building. They've since moved back, and the building is fantastic. Two stories, giant collection, all that good stuff. They even have a parking garage next door!

The grocery store was an abandoned Marsh. It's in Carmel, Indiana. This is why I'm anonymous, btw-- I don't want anyone to know where I live. I've driven past it since as well.

The CCPL (Carmel Clay Public Library) is a fantastic library with a giant collection (especially compared to my home library) so I love it there. Totally recommend looking it up.

It was cold in that building. This was awesome during the summer, until my mom spent ages there picking out books and there were only 4 tables in the main area where she could find me. It was incredibly awkward, since there was barely any space to hang out while I waited and read whatever book I'd picked up for the day.

When they were about to move back, my mom maxed out her card so that they wouldn't have to move as many books over to the new location.

They were using normal bookshelves instead of grocery store shelves, don't worry! It was just around the edges that they used what was still there. Which... Yeah, it was odd, but it worked.

The doors were still the same as the usual grocery store doors.

I forget if they had a return slot you could use-- I think they didn't, so we had to turn in our books at the front desk. I know they didn't have one outside, though, so that was a little difficult to deal with.

Libby is phenomenal. Vote to fund as much Libby as possible! I basically don't subscribe to magazines anymore, I just get them through Libby. And there are so many audiobooks 🎧📚 🩵

Hoopla, for some reason, is very glitchy on my phone. Not anti-Hoopla, just, if your phone or laptop is old / janky af, I recommend Libby over Hoopla.

Also, I genuinely don't know what program this is thru, but I have gotten a New York Times subscription, 3 days at a time, using my Cuyahoga County Public Library Card.

It's doable through the CCPL website. I'm hopeful using that service is similarly good re: funding, tho I'm not certain l.

"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.

It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).

Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.

One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
