lol that reminds me: last time we saw gotham my sister was telling me how her new coworker is a huge chelsea fan (men and women) so she was talking to him about how i like barça women (this was right after the first uwcl semi) and then she randomly stopped to ask me what nationality lucy was and i told her english and she was like "...are we sure it's not swedish?" and i was like ummm yeah i'm prettyyyy sure LMAO

you wrap her ponytail around your knuckles and pull slightly, detaching her from you. you cock your eyebrow “it’ll matter to you when it ends up all over tiktok”

jessie shrugs and goes to lean back into you as best she can “i don’t have tiktok”

you yank her ponytail “your sister does” you grit out, suddenly very aware of jessie’s knee that was pressed to your core “and i’m sure she wouldn’t want to see pictures of her sister making out with her club teammate”

the canadian groans and shuts her eyes momentarily “please don’t talk about my sister when i’m trying to get in your pants”

you raise your eyebrows at jessie’s almost immature way of saying she’s trying to sleep with you. usually, jessie just refers to it as sex, even fucking if she’s in the mood, but hardly does she ever use phrases like ‘get in your pants’. “that’s very crass of you fleming” you smirk, using your hold on her ponytail to guide her lips back to your own “you kiss your mother with that mouth?”

“again, talking about my family” she groans once more whilst pushing her knee further into you, wasting no more time on crashing her lips into yours.

since you moved to chelsea, you and jessie had been sneaking around. you’d attended ucla with her and had a little fling right before she left for london, quickly putting an end to it once she crossed the pond. turns out the sexual tension was still very much between you and you had found yourself in her bed a mere month after signing with the blues.

somehow you’d managed to keep up the act that the two of you were just friends catching up. when niamh had quizzed jessie about it the canadian had just said that you weren’t really friends, just friendly, and were just catching up. she’d really played up the fact that you just needed someone familiar while you settled, someone you knew you could trust.

niamh had been suspicious about the reasoning because you had cat. your national teammate had been so excited when you’d signed with chelsea from gotham, even letting you stay with her whilst you sorted an apartment out.

you and jessie’s secret little thing left the two of you here, tucked away in the tunnel after a usa vs canada match, making out and practically grinding on eachother.

you hum against her mouth “dirty mouth” you playfully tut, one hand still wrapped in her ponytail whilst the other was slung around her neck.

“can you shut up and at least let me try to get you back to my hotel room” she grumbles against you, her fingertips wandering slightly past the waistband of your shorts “just wanna fuck you”

“very dirty mouth” you giggle “go on then fleming, you gonna take me home?”

“if home is a hotel room then yes, i will be taking you home”

You had finally settled into your new home and had made your debut for Seattle Reign FC.

You had made some new friends and even kept in contact with almost all of the girls from Chelsea, Christine had come over every now and then to make sure you were okay but in reality there was only ever one girl that you wanted to see.

Jessie.

You hated yourself for it.

You were the one who broke her heart, you were the one to tear your relationship apart.

She has every right to ignore you.

But it still hurts when you would see each other in public and she wouldn’t even say hi.

But today was different. Today Seattle Reign would vs Portland Thorns and as both you and Jessie were midfielders you knew there would have to be some sort of altercation between you two.

Lauren Barnes, a friend you had made since your move was waving her hand in front of your face, trying to gain attention as you sipped on your hot chocolate. “Earth to y/n” she sang out and you looked up at her “Sorry?” you asked

“I said are you worried about the game but I think I already got my answer” she smirked “Oh” you shrugged “I guess”.

“So it’s true then,” Lauren said, leaning closer to you “What is?” you asked

“That you and Jessie dated before she moved to Portland”

You rolled your eyes at her eagerness “Yes we did Lozza, now go off and pester someone else” you whined, and the girl shook her head “Why’d you break up?” she asked “Because she was going to Portland and I thought my forever home was London” you told her “but you’re back here” she pointed out “I am” you nodded “So…” she trailed off “So?” you asked.

“So get back together!” she whisper yelled and you flinched away “Jesus Lauren” you whisper yelled back and she backed away sheepishly “Sorry”.

The girl didn’t stop making comments about the Canadian to you on the bus and in the changing room as you all got ready.

“You are not helping me,” you told the girl as you laced up your boots.

“I’m being honest I saw her looking at you when we were all checking out the pitch” she excitedly told you “No she wasn’t” you denied “She was! It was like you guys were playing tennis, every time you looked away she was looking at you and every time you looked at her she was looking away!”

“Do you mind focussing on the game?”

“Nope”.

You rolled your eyes in defeat and shrugged off your jacket “let’s go games about to start” you huffed and walked away.

Christine saw you walk out with a scowl as she was also planning to get an early start on the line-up.

“Kiddo what’s up?” she exclaimed and grabbed your shoulders, you turned your head towards her “Just a bad day,” you told her “Was it Lauren teasing you?” she asked and you shot your head up “How Did you-“ “I may have asked her to ask about Jessie to you” she admitted and you stepped back “why?”

“Because I have been pestering Jessie”

“Well stop,” you told her “Me and Jessie broke up a year ago” you started, not hearing the boots that were walking behind you “It’s been a year and I haven’t even got the courage to start a conversation with her and you guys are telling me to ask her out again, do you even know if that’s what she wants” you ranted.

Jessie has always been an early bird, to everything. It usually gave her peace and quiet but when she decided to join Christine at the line-up she definitely wasn’t expecting to see you waving your hands around whilst complaining.

“I haven’t even got the courage to start a conversation with her and you guys are telling me to ask her out again, do you even know if that’s what she wants?”

Your words were clean off your tongue and Jessie stepped away and hid behind the corner.

Ask her out again.

But you didn’t love her.

At least that’s what you told her.

“I’m sorry” you apologized to Christine and hugged her, sighing in relief when she smoothed her hands over your back “Freshen up kid, I’ll see you on the field”.

You walked away, thankfully to the front so Jessie didn’t have to worry about you but as soon as you were out of sight Jessie stepped to Christine.

“Why are you meddling?” she asked the older Canadian who was shocked to see her “Jessie-“ “She told me she didn’t love me and I moved states, I thought I was over her” she gritted her teeth “god” she cursed “you guys can at least talk about it,” Christine said and Jessie scoffed “she might have something that you’ll want to hear,” the older woman said softly “like what, how much she didn’t love for those two years of us dating”

“Jessie” Christine tried to reason but the girl back away “I’ll come when Janine does” she said and walked back to the room, opposite of where you had gone.

Christine watched her walk away and lifted her arms in surrender.

“Fucking kids”.

As an American fan, I do think we have a bit of an inferiority complex about the American style vs European styles that plays out in the NWSL vs WSL/Liga F/Frauen-Bundesliga/etc conversation. That American international dominance was just about conditioning and never about tactics. Transitional vs possession-oriented styles. That if Europe could catch up on resources, then they would beat us. And it didn’t help when our national team captain (Horan) shot off her mouth and basically said European football is better last spring.

So I’ll say, as an American, watching two pre-season WSL teams beat two of the better NWSL teams stings a little. And I would really LOVE to have seen those games with the olympians on the field, because I think both the Spirit and Gotham were more impacted by that than Arsenal and Chelsea since GB didn’t go.

And you know Barca is gonna roll Bay FC. So I just wish one of the American teams had won in all this. And I REALLY hope this trend of international club friendlies continues because it’s super fun and a benefit to the game overall.

well, if it makes you feel any better, anon, both of the nwsl teams were missing a number of olympians who would have made it more of a fair fight. 😅

but either way, the nwsl is not really based on a 'super-team' model like we have in liga f or wsl, meaning that the talent is spread out more evenly across the league. so the bay fc match-up isn't like two titans going to battle or anything like that. but it will be very nice to see osho reunited with her old teammates! 🥹

now the dallas trinity usl should be a blowout. my understanding is that the team roster just came together a few weeks ago?! not sure the value in playing a team like that except as a money making venture and to give exposure to this new usl league.

but i agree. i love seeing teams from different leagues play each other. it's fun and not to be taken so seriously! 😄

also, these graphics that bay fc put out on its instagram are pretty cool, and props to them for calling out caro as one to watch!

yes, different regions of a country having their own flag seems super common to me, too! other than the states, which you mentioned having their own flags, i've spent some time recently in quebec and some of the other canadian provinces, which also have their own flags. 🤷‍♀️

here’s my lucy recap of the gotham vs chelsea match lol! i typed most of this directly after we left so apologies if it’s incoherent:

the atmosphere was very fun overall

the love for lucy is very serious when they announced the starting xis the screams for her were the loudest from what i heard (also lj) and at the beginning of the game some girl behind me screamed i love you lucy

during the game she did pass to our players a handful of times lol i was like thanks babe!!

i get why people say she’s tiny — she’s definitely slimmer than she looks in some pics but honestly she’s about what i expected. she’s just so hot overall i was trying to assess but i was mainly just staring whenever she was in front of me

i forgot about this until now but she started on the opposite side from where we were sitting so i was like oh yay next half she’ll be right in front of us and then sonia switched her to centerback for the second half😭😭 very rude

soooo many people waited for her at the end, the girls next to me were saying how much they love her and stuff it was so cute i was really with my people

like i said as soon as the chelsea huddle was done she turned around and did the cutest little run over to rose who was standing around talking to the uswnt girls so after their hug she stuck around and talked with them all for such a long time i was just watching them smiling like 😀

she also said hi to maitane who was really good friends with ona back at levante so that was cute

and then she talked to our gotham coach for a while (he’s spanish so in my mind she was practicing her elementary spanish with his kid) and since we know how much she likes negotiating her transfers with opposition coaches after games i can only imagine she was being recruited for 2026 😁😁 and then she stayed even longer to make it around to all the fans

like i said before on here i’m not very interested in meeting my favs but i brought my lb15 barça shirt anyway and when lucy came to our section to sign stuff i held it up and she gave such a cute smile and nod

and then this very sweet woman next to me had passed her england shirt to the front and got it signed and when she turned around she took mine and went back down to give it to her and she ended up getting a selfie so we both won lmao 😭 i didn’t expect her to hustle so hard for me but it was so sweet and my sister has the video of her signing it <33

she is very gorgeous i could see her freckles from where i was and her eyes were soso pretty i’ve always loved her eyes so much and they look even more beautiful in person

it was like a full hour after the game ended when we finally left and she was one of the last players on the field but she was still so sweet the entire time and i’m so glad she got to see how much everybody loves her over here

she did have ice on her knee and she was limping a lot but it didn’t seem like anything out of the ordinary like it just reminds me of exactly what she did the first few games at barça last season i think she just needs time to get her fitness back and once the season gets going she’ll be good

😒 me seeing the Chelsea Gotham game announcement. Where the hell was this when they were both healthy and playing on those teams? But I’m still excited for it.

Yeah would have been fun. But there's still hope for next season in the WSL (go Hammies🤣) but still should be fun to watch these wsl vs nwsl games. Wish I was close enough to watch that in person.
