yesss exactly this! I love the idea that they probably didn’t get along when Javier first joined the gang, especially since they‘re the same age. John isn’t that great with his feelings especially when he was a little younger like in their early 20s and they were both angry boys and they’d argue or fight a lot but afterwards they’d both feel bad and try to apologise but they were bad with words so it would be actions. Javier would bring John a fish he’d caught having got Pearson to cook it for him or John buys him a new knife to apologise and they both struggle to say in words how they feel so they just bring each other gifts or it’s through their actions for aaages before they finally manage to find the words - it’s only after one two many drinks late one night by the camp fire when everyone else is asleep and it’s just the two of them that they finally bring it up, and even then they struggle to say it so John just grabs Javier’s face and kisses him dhjfkdhsh
