Grant Associates’ Martin Knight appointed to new Design Council expert network

Martin Knight, Associate at Grant Associates in Bath, has been appointed to the Design Council’s new network of more than 400 built and natural environment experts, who collectively embody the organisation’s commitment to make life better by design.

The new Design Council network, officially announced this week, combines the expertise of active leaders and change makers from a number of professions, backgrounds and regions.

The network is key to the role that the Design Council plays in delivering design advice and support services in the built and natural environment and beyond. 34 ambassadors and 350 associates and specialists, as well as more than 20 corporate partners, comprise the new network, which replaces Design Council’s previous roster of built environment experts.

Martin Knight, Chartered Landscape Architect and Associate at Grant Associates in Bath, has joined the new network as a Design Council Expert Associate. His role will involve strategic design support and design reviews, contributing to a community of practice that will develop, co-create and partner on new projects, programmes and opportunities with the Design Council, sharing knowledge and expertise with fellow experts and wider society. Martin will also participate in thought workshops, roundtables, panel discussions and input into policy development.

Martin brings to the role his personal passion for creating inspirational and beautiful places that delight, consider the needs of both people and nature, and that contribute positively to the health and wellbeing and overall quality of life.

Since joining Grant Associates in 2015, Martin has been involved with a diverse portfolio across a variety of project scales and sectors, including higher education, residential, strategic small- and large-scale mixed-use master planning projects, parks and public realm design. His portfolio includes work on the University of Sussex West Slope Residences project at the University’s Falmer campus near Brighton, and Mountbatten House, affectionately known as the Hanging Gardens of Basingstoke and cited as one of the 15 most important modern listed buildings in the UK. A key current focus for Martin is Brabazon, Bristol, one of the largest brownfield redevelopments in the UK.

Grant Associates is expanding its presence in Singapore with new offices and staff appointments as demand grows for services across South East Asia.

Two new members of staff have joined the landscape architect’s Singapore office, which has moved to larger premises at Tras Street in Tanjong Pagar – a historic district within the city’s Central Business District.

Zhang Yuan joins the team as Landscape Architect after a five-year stint at Ballistic Architecture Machine, an award-winning, multidisciplinary design studio based in Beijing and New York. Key projects Zhang Yuan has worked on include the Finite-Infinite Garden for Beijing Garden Expo and the Vanke Daxing Showroom, Beijing.

Tan Wei Lin, a recent graduate of Singapore Polytechnic, joins as Graduate Landscape Architect. A rising talent in the sector, Wei Lin won three gongs at the 2016 Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) Student Design Awards for Outstanding Graphic Presentation (Gold), Planting Design (Gold) and Best Design Showcase (Silver).

Zhang Yuan and Wei Lin will add to the international expertise and creativity of the existing team, which is led by Mike Wood, Senior Associate, and Stefaan Lambreghts, Associate.

After consolidating its reputation in the region as lead masterplanner and designer of Singapore’s internationally acclaimed Gardens by the Bay, this landscape architecture practice has gone on to win a range of high profile contracts in Singapore, South East Asia and Australia.

Projects currently underway include Funan Mall and mixed-use development Paya Lebar Quarter in Singapore, and Barangaroo in Sydney. Recently completed projects include Capitol Development in Singapore and Afiniti in Medini, Malaysia.

Grant Associates joins UK Trade and Industry creative taskforce set to boost trade by £500 million

The UK landscape architecture firm based in Bath, has joined a drive to help the UK’s creative companies win high value contracts overseas to be launched by the government today.

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) will support a taskforce of the UK’s top 100 creative sector small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to win £500 million worth of high value overseas contracts in the next three years. The initiative is part of a government plan to get 100,000 more UK businesses exporting.

Companies on the taskforce include Grant Associates, the only landscape architecture firm represented, Zaha Hadid Architects, The British Museum, Heatherwick Studio, priestmangoode, AKQA, FutureBrand, Mother, ES Global, factorydesign, Populous and the V&A. They span the transport, healthcare, retail, cultural developments and global sports sectors.

Andrew Grant, director, Grant Associates, said:

“It is an honour to be included and participate in the creative sector taskforce. We look forward with great anticipation to working with the UK Trade and Investment and the other creative companies in promoting and creating an imaginative and ecologically enlightened future with British creative companies at the forefront.”

Business Secretary, Vince Cable said:

“The growing appetite for British design offers many opportunities for innovative firms of all sizes to boost their overseas trade and attract new investment. Collectively the creative industries already generate more than £36 billion a year for the UK economy – £70,000 every minute – and employ 1.5 million people.

“From airport interiors to ground-breaking medical devices and design exhibitions, the creative industries account for around £1 in every £10 of the UK’s exports and are crucial to building a stronger economy. With new support from UK Trade & Investment, we want to help creative SMEs access more high value supply chain opportunities across the globe.”

Each company in the taskforce will have its own international expansion plan and participate in a minimum of two overseas visits each year to target high value projects.

They will also receive training, support and networking opportunities directly related to these high value opportunities from UKTI and work with International Trade Advisers to identify the projects they are most qualified to bid for.

Until recently the market for UK creativity was limited largely to Western Europe but as new markets mature and global trading channels widen, the demand for British creative expertise is escalating.

The interest, particularly from emerging markets in Asia and the Middle East and countries like Russia and Brazil, is based on Britain’s reputation as a leader in creative industries.

We bought chickens AND bunnies at the same time, really hectic,I was tryna cuddle the bunnies but they would bite sometimes. At one point, in AC origins game trying to hide in a house full of Roman ppl from one of the phylakites that was killing everyone indiscriminately, very scary. I was female character, did the cool thing where i cut ropes on a chandelier and rode the other rope up onto something, one handed. Then i was in airport with alex, we had gone to Japan but then I got freaked out cuz of Corona and we both forgot towear masks

I was in a thrift store and didnt like any of the stuff I grabbed so I went to put it back n leave cuz I was only on lunch break anyway, the shop girl made snide remark about my hair needing to be dyed? She was like, thanks for coming in, come back when ur hair doesnt suck or something. I said fuck you and your orange hair, cuz it was dyed red and faded, but I stuttered n she made fun of it. But then she followed me cuz we all had to go to some meeting? N she was a little nicer. Sat at these tables waiting for alex, we were about to see a show with a drag queen. It was in a mall or something

Was at west again but getting lost, then was back in 4th grade maybe? Looking for new class? Then I was starting to date alex but someone else like jenna was in the room with us, he was spooning me but trying to be secret, jenna thought we were fucking, also I took a shower w him but needed another one, I had taken like 3 showers that day. I was staying w my family somewhere in hotel maybe. Then saw this girl I thought maybe was his ex katie, creeped on her instagram she actually was mixed black girl w blonde hair, was cheerleader n basketball player, really badass and mean. Brian lemaster was in there somewhere. Ar some point I started drinking juice boxes filled with milk before remebering I was lactose intolerant

Dreamed I was signing up for a matchmaking service to get married? It was via snail mail, and it was all girls who were mostly indian I think, or maybe bosnian. One girl was named Imina and sent me some of my writing that she edited, I found it very snooty and rude. Also had accepted someone else before seeing I had a letter from her. Also something with different video games that were scary, but all took place in the same house. One was 5 nights at freddy's themed, one was victorian ghosts, etc.

Was going on charter bus with work and other ppl, were leaving my old house. Kept forgetting my earbuds, went back in to see maids deep cleaning the whole place. Bus went out into cold winter wilderness? I made friends w bus driver, guy looked like william h Macy a little bit. Then i was Rey, kylo ren had captured me and was gonna make me squirt bleach into my eyes so I'd be blind, fought him off and escaped thru the back of a cupboard. He was on island surrounded by stormy sea, freezing cold, and big blocks of calcium formations kept crumbling into it. Force ghost Luke Skywalker appeared to me to tell me death was real but I could escape. Then I was with jenna or sarah, went to hotel looking 4 my parents, nice old ladies were telling me they saw my lost mittens or something? I brushed them off super rude

Was in big house with mafia family. Lots of cars n helicopters falling out of sky, crashing thru glass ceilings. Trying to leave the house, calling business guy when a car falls on him owned by one of the mafia guys. Smthn with a chef from the house, hes really strict when teaching kids how to cook, indian food cant have lemon juice in it? I was licking the glaze off raw chicken and salmon

Was in Laos in war zone, Belgians were bombing the shit out of it and these rare plants called dragon plants were burning, it was way sad. Then it was xmas at parents house but also dads bday, had to help mom take down all xmas decor temporarily until we could open dads presents. Also I didnt trim my zucchini plants and one was like 12 feet tall. Then at work taking break on some huge metal train. Also something about being in some state or royal building, running or hiding from someone

Was with alex in old doornbos house, he was asking me who was in my "network" meaning who had I slept with. I said a bunch of people and he got mad, I was high and tried to explain it was in the past not current. Then I was in theater at the high school across the road, had an improv scene with abby thomas but hadn't rehearsed at all. Went to rehearsal, everybody from hs was there, dawson was teacher, saw shelby drive past. Then smthn about walking bay in the mountains, were super high up in the snow and saw other ppl walking dogs

Something about having traded bodies with ian brauer when we were younger? Or not even traded, I had somehow accidentally possessed him and then had to go to school and pretend like I was him, and then only when I concentrated really hard I went back to my own body which was passed out on the floor of my room.

In a school, had brought imhotep back 2 life n he brought back his gf so we tried running and hiding. Then he was darth Vader and he caught me. Then dream about being on wild ferris wheel kinda ride with mom and Lauren who was sometimes aunt ellen, then in a family of talking dolphins whose step mom was a whale, the dad was joking about how him and the mom might perish at the bottom of the ocean. Then something about a demon possessed lady

Scary dream 1st where I was out walking at night in the forest, looked kinda like lower area of ECOS. The light in a street lamp didnt work, had to use flashlight. Alex showed up with bay who was now a white shih tzu, a frat guy in skeleton costume ran over to scare us. Then I lived in this village/tribe, everyone had hotel rooms kinda. I was back in town going to everyone's rooms, my mom had a room next to mine but she was gone somewhere. Then we were playing guitars, I picked up someones weird acoustic base to try and play. Then I got invite from JC, him and his friends were having a joint wedding in 2026, invite looked like DND character sheet. I was in the forest when scary evil ash cloud exploded out from the ground, kinda like in neverending story or moana. Ran back to village and was safe inside this like, sacred circle? It meant that I was actually the next in line to be the tribal chief. The tribe purposely kept everyone's parentage a secret so it was like the whole village was our parents, but this meant my dad was this one rando young guy who wasnt even the chief? Anyway he hugged me and it was emotional. It meant I had this prophetic duty to defeat these creepy evil eels like in the little mermaid. The water/ocean was this weird quad, with each quadrant being a different depth and color blue. I had to scuba dive to the bottom on a certain date to fight them, matthew/mikey was gonna hold my breathing tubes or something? If I tugged twice he could pull me back up.

In world where mr bean guy was a king n had lots of bodyguards, he was taking on corrupt religious mormon police like in Utah who rode camels and abducted like 500 people for slavery.

Had private teacher lady for something, 8 of us. I couldnt concentrate on test. She gave me spare key to let her dog out, i go in her house and the skylights are open and room full of snow. Then she has dinner party with me, snape, Adonis, michelle/jenn, and a doctor. Ends in screaming match, I'm mad cuz Michelle keeps flirting w Adonis by dropping shit on purpose and making him pick them up. Then I go to doc about weird vaginal discharge and being depressed, hes kind of a quack and doesnt help or listen. Then I was trying to get job at restaurant but all the servers had been at the party and thought I was crazy. Also smthn bout seeing a concert and shawn goggins was in it, jc and elliot were there and I started laughing at him about how that was a girl he cheated on me with but she turned out to be a trans man so he had sex with a dude

I was in world like video game level, in a class w people. Started in weird castle that had secret passages, and then onto these floating balloons above black holes. Tried to jump from one to the other without falling, very scary. Then with alex in a hallway, waiting for some event to start. We climbed up to ledge where there was like a gem/ring stockpile, I started stealing them. Mcgonagall was there and saw us, I was too afraid of heights to climb down. Then event was starting but it was some creepy cult wearing animal masks, I had to pretend like I knew what was happening

Caribbean Airlines history

Caribbean Airlines was founded in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on 27th September, 2006. Our first ever flight took place on 1st January 2007 back when we had 128 weekly departures to 10 destinations and just five Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Caribbean Airlines were the pioneers of the simplified one-way fare inclusive of taxes and fees that provided our valued customers with flexible fare combinations and extended stay options. The new fare programme also featured a permanent discounted fare, senior citizen discounts and no change fees for students.

Shortly afterwards, we launched a Web check-in feature that allowed travellers to check in for flights and print boarding passes from the comfort of their homes and offices.

In the first two months of operation, our on-time performance was 93.9% surpassing the average aviation industry’s standard of 85%. Caribbean Airlines also exceeded industry standards with an impressive lost baggage rate of just 0.7 for January 2007(less than one bag lost per thousand passengers).

Our codeshare with British Airways took off with a flight between Port of Spain, Trinidad and London Gatwick International Airport in March .

The codeshare allowed Caribbean Airlines customers easy connectivity to London, a city well loved by travellers. To meet increased travel demand for major regional events, like Cricket World Cup and the Tobago Jazz Festival in March and April we added a Boeing 737-800 aircraft and a hundred extra flights to our schedule. The enhanced schedule also included special charters to St. Kitts, Bermuda and Grenada, and is a clear example of Caribbean Airlines’ commitment to the Caribbean region and our customers’ needs.

A key part of employee induction and establishment of our culture was a comprehensive brand camp. The brand camp exposed all employees to the customer service standards expected from everyone. Employees were appointed Brand Ambassadors to spread the word about elements of our superior service, on time performance and authenticCaribbean warmth, which were was welcome by our customers.What’s more, we initiated customer service monitoring programmes to measure and benchmark customer satisfaction in all areas from reservations to our in-flight service.Impressively, we managed to end the first two months of 2007 with an overall customer service rating of 81%.

In addition, our Caribbean Miles loyalty programme featured a seamless transfer of Miles from the BWIA West Indies Airways Frequent Flyer Miles programme. An initial base of 128,734 recorded Caribbean Miles members had risen to 136,789 members by the end of June 2007, a clear testament to our growing loyalty base.

In July 2007 Caribbean Airlines became the first airline in the region to launch an initiative to provide sustainable air travel, with the CarbonNeutral® programme. In partnership with the CarbonNeutral Company, we offered customers the opportunity to off setair line carbon emissions by investing in eco-friendly projects.

In August 2007, Caribbean Airlines opened a new 2,000 square-foot sales and ticket office at Nicholas Tower,Independence Square, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad featuring state-of-the-art technology such as internet kiosks for ticket booking and online check-in.

Two months later, we purchased the remaining shares of the airline, Tobago Express. This acquisition included the airline’s employees, its five aircraft and responsibility for operating the domestic air bridge between Trinidad and Tobago.

In the latter part of our maiden year, more than a dozen flight attendants from throughout the Caribbean region joined Caribbean. The recruitment from other CARICOM nations showed our commitment to being the airline for the entire Caribbean.

Further, to demonstrate our flexibility and commitment to meeting regional travel needs, Caribbean Airlines leased an additional Boeing 737-800 to increase the number of flights to our destinations and provide more opportunities for our customers to visit family and friends around the world.

By the end of 2007, our airline was firmly established as the corner stone for regional travel as evidenced by its steady growth. In early 2008, Caribbean Airlines began a daily service to Caracas, Venezuela. The new daily return flight was the first network expansion since the start of operations in January 2007. The introduction of a daily service to Fort Lauderdale, Florida soon followed and we became the regional-airline with the most direct services between Trinidad and South Florida. This growth was complemented by significant costs savings and increased quality control with the move to insourcing the heavy maintenance of the fleet.

Today, 10 years on, and with many milestones since our start in 2007, Caribbean Airlines operates more than 600 weekly flights to 18 destinations in the Caribbean and North and South America. Our fleet is comprised of Boeing 737-800 and ATR72-600 aircraft. Jointly owned by the people of Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica, headquartered in Trinidad and Tobago, and with an operational base in Jamaica, Caribbean Airlines employs more than 1600 people. We are a member of theInternational Air Transport Association (IATA) and are recognized as an IATA Operational Safety Audit qualified airline. Caribbean Airlines is a certified FAA repair station as per regulation 145.

Carbon Neutral Fashion Is A Small Club That More Brands Need To Join

Fashion may not be the second most polluting industry in the world (that fact was debunked in 2017) but there’s no doubt that it’s still pretty bad. The production and manufacturing of clothing undoubtedly releases toxins into the environment, but when it’s the basis of your business model, you can’t just shut down production altogether. The next best thing is to go carbon neutral.

In order for to be considered carbon-neutral, the brand must offset the amount of damage they are doing to the environment by contributing to the betterment of that environment, such as investing in renewable energy projects or planting trees.

The shift to carbon neutrality might seem like common sense, given that a report published by the Ellen MacArther Foundation in 2017 revealed that fast fashion production was on a steady incline that doubled between 2005 and 2015. At the same time, the number of times clothing was worn before ending up in a landfill was on the decline.

In December, the United Nations released the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action. The charter, largely backed by designer Stella McCartney, commits to finding ways to reduce climate change that’s been at the fault of fashion. Fashion key players like H&M, adidas and Hugo Boss are among dozens of brands that have pledged to go carbon neutral by 2050.

While it is a step in the right direction, we’ll probably be underwater in 30 years, so here are three brands that are going carbon neutral right now:

Allbirds

Allbirds is a natural-wool shoe brand for men and women that was designed with simplicity, comfort and the environment in mind. It is only natural that they announced they will be going 100 per cent carbon-neutral this coming Earth Day, April 22. To celebrate their step in the right direction to reduce their carbon footprint, the brand will also be releasing a limited edition endangered bird shoe line with all proceeds going towards the National Audubon Society.

Some years later I crossed the pond again on a ship but this time it was 5 times bigger and I traveled in style on the QE2 and died in the Queen’s Grill somewhat removed from my earlier experience. I highly recommend ocean voyages but cannot see myself on one of the modern cruise ships going from port to port with constant line-ups to get on and off to buy t-shirts. However, I have done 10 Windjammers and a Star Clipper cruise in the Caribbean which were all memorable (let’s hope Windjammer Barefoot Cruises recover from their woes). But I digress.

I had read that Canada is a spectacular country, from sea to shining sea, and my entrance into the St. Lawrence River to Montreal and then heading west in an old Econoline van from the Great Lakes, across the Prairies to the Rocky Mountains before ending up whale watching off of the Pacific Coast of Vancouver Island was a trip of wonder to a bloke from London. Today the scenery is still spectacular and the best way to go is still by road so rent or buy a car, motorhome or motorbike, take the train or tour bus but remember the maps, a fly rod, good boots and take your time.

My favorite part of Canada / USA for adventure travel has to be Northern BC / Alaska, to hike the Chilkoot Trail in the steps of the gold seekers of 1898. The Northwest Territories to canoe the Nahanni River and the Yukon to drive from Dawson City to Chicken, Alaska. If you like the outdoors and can put up with a few bugs, cast a fly and scale a few hills or drive on endless dirt roads sharing the space with moose, caribou, elk, bears and eagles, then these are the places to put on your list. The pleasures and experiences in driving to Inuvik on the Dempster Highway or to Prudhoe Bay on the Dalton Highway or even the Canol Road can only be felt by doing them. I would have mentioned the Alaska Highway but now it is an easy drive unlike the aforementioned.

Today the costs of driving these distances may mean that sharing the journey with others is required, but RVing or simply vanning and camping is a great way to see beyond the horizon. Some en route adventures now need to be booked in advance whereas when I hiked Denali and the Chilkoot Pass it was just a case of turning up, registering with the local ranger office and heading on out. A little more forward planning is needed for today’s traveler and cost considerations of lengthy flights or drives have to somehow be countered with more careful planning. In the days of reasonable gas prices I would not even consider the driving or flying costs and have driven to Key West from the northwest coast, down the west coast to the Baja and to the west coast from New York. I once even flew my 1946 Fleet taildragger from the Pacific to the Atlantic and back using around 5 gallons an hour of avgas. Before the oil and credit crisis I drove from Rio de Janeiro to Lima, down to Tierra del Fuego and back to Rio covering over 15,000 miles of spectacular scenery and with no consideration of the cost of gas. South America should be on your itinerary too! Some other memorable drives that may now require a mortgage with the gas companies include London to The Nordkapp, Norway, Skippers Canyon in New Zealand and the loneliness of the far north of Australia and the amazing coast of Western Australia stopping by at Monkey Mia and Wave Rock.

We tend to forget that the real cost of traveling is often less today than over the 40 years of my travels. In 1977 my round-trip airfare from Canada to Australia cost over $1700 in 1977 dollars so today it is far cheaper to fly, even with the airlines gouging for fuel, extra baggage, no service and no pleasure. The ‘Big Mac’ method of price comparison as developed by The Economist newspaper gives us a good gauge for most expenditures of today compared to yesterday but my $1500 cost to get a private pilots license in the 1970’s seems cheap by comparison to today, but obviously not when using this Big Mac principle. Other travel costs are also far cheaper today but this should not mean that travelers should disregard the many methods of saving costs that can then be put to extended or improved travel experiences

Travel Post-Internet:

In my 40 years of travel, I have had to use travel agents to make even the simplest of reservations and buy tickets, not even thinking to ask them if they had “been there, done that?” It was just a case of there being no other options to buying travel. Now we have unlimited choices and can seek out better travel agents, better prices, better selections and information about anywhere in the world for our travels – without even leaving home.

The Internet now gives travelers ideas and options of Where to go, When to go, Why to go, What to do, Who to book with and How to save money and offset costs. We can search and find experts for every travel option. If we are comfortable with the Internet we no longer have to go to a travel agent to make reservations and buy tickets except to book with some of the larger travel companies that still produce glossy brochures and offer all inclusive packages or tours that only sell through the agency system. The Internet also allows those of us who are smart enough to know when to seek out a top travel agent with knowledge, experience, and expertise (KEE skills) of destinations and activities about where to find them. There is no longer any need to only use our local agents when we can find one somewhere else in the world. When we do not need ‘the knowledge’ and can do it ourselves we simply surf the web so that we can book directly with tour and travel operators wherever we have decided to go.

Some travel agents operate their own tours, some are both wholesale and retail, some limit consumer selection by only selling their ‘preferred’ suppliers and some have professional consultants with years of experience invested in gaining knowledge, experience, and expertise and are worth their weight in gold to the savvy traveler. Beware though, as some are also called destination specialists and some of these designations merely require the agent to take a rudimentary test offered by tourism offices, destination marketing groups or even tour operators and in my opinion can harm the reputation of the travel industry. A specialist is not necessarily an expert.

Travel is probably the most used commercial aspect of the Internet and if retail agents want to harness this exciting medium to offer ‘the knowledge’ and their ‘key’ skills to a global audience, not just their local community, they must embrace the changes that are happening. Travelers now have the ability to seek answers to the 5 W’s of travel and the important ‘How to’ save money and offset costs by having information just a click away.

And then it occurred to me that even internet travel prices often include a commission element even when sold directly to the consumer. If we book directly with operators we should not have to pay full retail prices as we are doing for ourselves what a retail agent would normally do for us. A dilemma for the operator is that to show a both a retail and a cost price option could deter many agents from selling the services as travelers could use an agent for free advice and book directly with the operator to get a ‘net of commission’ price. Obviously, this two-tier pricing is not often available but travelers who do not need advice should also not be penalized by retail pricing. A new way had to be found and I think I have found it!

The need for fairer fare prices is why I developed the Top Travel Voucher program at The Top Travel Club and I even found a dot com for it. All travel selections on the site are at ‘net of commission’ prices for members who handle there own travel arrangements directly with the operators linked on the club website using our voucher program.

The operator would normally be paying commission anyway but now travelers get the savings because they make their own arrangements.
