Blog post Midterm or #11- ABC (American Born Chinese)

American Born Chinese or recognized as ABC by Gene Luen Yang, has three part in the book as it is a comic, it has the part where there is a monkey and goes wants to go to a gathering but is unable to because he his a monkey, and that brought the concept that there are many things that you can or cant not do because you are really different from everyone. But other than that there are other concepts that the book brings as it shows as do not be ashamed of who you are. As in the book Daniel had his cousin come over from China, he was ashamed that he had a cousin who would many of these embarrassing things that would make him be looked at differently. Another concept on this is that it tells you that when you are new from somewhere else you may just have to try to adopt to new conditions. As it was in another part of the story it is Jin Wang who is in San Francisco and is in a classroom with people different from him. As he gets bullied from what he is and then later finds a friend that is also going through the same as him. his name is Wei-Chen.

The second part is now going back to the story of the monkey. He put in a lot of work to be able to have a lot of power and wants to get himself in and be the same as the other ones that entered the night previously. But the creator of the monkey comes out and tells him don’t be ashamed of who you are. He tried to prove himself against the creator. But the creator is so powerful that he stopped by sealing rocks on him. Not back to jin’s story, where he has a crush on a girl but thinks she has a crush on another person. So Jinn tries to imitate him by the hairstyle. then gets bullied in school and makes his friend and Suzy ashamed. The story of Daniel is pretty quick and it is how he accuses his cousin that he has to change schools because of him.

The story back to the monkey stats out with a monk that has help out and went to deliver and came to the monkey which gave him advice and accepted it. Continued on to follow the monk. Back to Jin’s story, he hang out with Amelia but then another guys tells him to not anymore as he can be the right one. So then reflects and realizes he hides his identity. But later it is realized also that the monkey has a son, and it was to give his words and teachings. Which is wei-chen.

In this book we see a bunch of yellow washing and assimilation. As in the beginning of the book, there was a lot of racism that when jin and Wei were classmates they made racial insult. that that Chinese people eat dog. And to stay away from them. Also in the the other story where Daniel’s cousin was having dim sum and all of the other classmates look at him weird to what he is eating. this can be an example of yellow washed, where these were from different countries or from a different culture, they follow their culture wherever they are. The second is assimilation where we see that there are jin that tried to be someone else from another culture but later realized that he can be who he is and he tried to be someone else to try to talk to a girl he liked. But then just thought to himself that he is just Asian and he should be who he is. Also with the story of the monkey, it is not really much have to do with culture, but this can be him being different from all of the other ones at the gathering in the clouds that they didn't let him in. He tried to do so much to get that power but it was all to be who he is and understand that he is a monkey that is what he is.

For our project on the midterm, we have dedicated that we will make a draw my life that is an animation by using to draw the life of someone similar to the book. It was similar but just different culture. It was Vietnamese person instead of a Chinese. This was not to make it the same as the book but to make the concept similar to the book. It was for us to create it based on someone else life as we did get help from a student here at SF State. For the video, look at the link down below if you would like to watch. 

So I can learn from this book and this project is that this is an actual problem in today's society mot just in the Asian American culture, but that we should just accept ourselves the way we are as even though we try so hard to change, we will not change as we are stuck forever. This is just how we are made. We come across a lot things that happen to someone we are close and we feel ashamed, we shouldn't this will make it even worse.
