Where did she go?!

I am still alive! A few people did wonder why my blog posts stopped so suddenly a while back. The truth is, what I didn’t anticipate was the lack of internet you find in the African bush. Shocker eh? Even in Kruger, most of my posts were usually the result of an hour battling with the wifi at the restcamp’s Wimpy. No wonder I returned home 2kg heavier...

After my epic 9 days in Kruger National Park, I spent 4 weeks volunteering at a safari lodge around a 2 hour drive North-west of Johannesburg. That lodge and the reserve it resides on will always hold a special place in my heart, for it opened my eyes to a natural world I had no idea existed! Whether it was golf ball sized hail stones literally making the swimming pool look like Armageddon was near, a crocodile chasing me back to the land cruiser, a spider bite that became so big I should have named it, a snake outside a guest’s chalet, being mock charged by an elephant only to drive round the corner to have sundowner G&Ts, or just having the privilege of going on so many game drives with the rangers and having them share their ridiculous knowledge of the bush with me...I swear it has literally changed me. Were you able to read that sentence in one breath? Well the bush took my breath away too! I took this picture on my last day at Mziki driving back to the lodge from a day at Pilanesburg National Park. I stopped the car on the access road (less of an issue than on the M25), opened the window to the sounds of the cicadas tickling my ears for the last time and just gazed ahead for a while, wondering if I’d ever feel that peaceful again...

It would be impossible to back date this blog to the day I arrived at Mziki but these pictures are a few of my favourite shots from my time there. 

For example, below is what looks like a dinosaur egg (and I may tell my nephews just that). It is in fact the egg of an ostrich. What I held in my lap was an abandoned egg we found on a game drive early one morning. It weighed around 1kg, had a shell about 2mm thick and these eggs have the capacity of 24 chicken eggs! It was found cold and alone (sad story), so after it was checked safe to eat, it became a casserole dish of bright yellow scrambled eggs...not meaning to put anyone off ostrich scrambled eggs, but that is a taste I never want in my mouth again...

A few months ago I wouldn’t have had a clue what the insect below was, and I would have ran 100 yards in the opposite direction at the sight of one. So when hearing “Who wants to hold him?” and I shout “ME!”, no one was more shocked than I was! This is an Elegant Grasshopper. Elegant....perhaps. However, these striking colours are normally a warning sign screaming “Don’t come near me, I’m poisonous!”. It’s called aposematic colouration if you really want to know (or maybe I’m just showing off) and it’s pretty effective at keeping predators away. Not that I knew this at the time, for if I did I probably wouldn’t have been so keen to hold the guy. Turns out however that although poisonous to their predators, some tribes have been known to eat these! Apparently it makes porridge quite tasty...think I’ll stick with my honey thanks...

Absolutely everything I have learned during my time at Mziki is due to the staff there. I’ve never known people so passionate about what they do and I’m forever grateful to them for giving me an insight into their world. I really did experience more than I ever thought I would, it gave me inspiration to start songwriting again and now for the next chapter of my story... my FGASA Level 1 Field Guide course starting early next year. South Africa, I’m coming back!
