Hiking with Sticks: Disability Pride Month Review

Most of the time (job interviews, for example) the average person I meet is not aware of my disability, because the right shoes and the right orthodics make me able to do most daily tasks. I can't run, which most people never ask you to do as an adult, and I can't stand in line for more than about half an hour (which I avoid), and I can't carry heavy things up the stairs. Or go up more than a handful of flights without risking my amazing collapsible ankle. However, sometimes it is ninety one degrees out and I want to go to the mountains so I don't evaporate. Enter the hiking sticks. And a lake at the top of a local canyon / pass / high meadow.

Pointed tipped hiking sticks are good for:

Balance and traction on paths made of packed dirt, dust, packed dirt with rocks in it, mud, pebbles, gravel, and silt. Both going up and down.

Forcing you to keep your posture upright so you breathe easier.

Leverage when climbing rock or dirt-behind-plank "stairs" that are uneven or just too tall overall.

Especially when your problem (one of your problems) is that one of your feet just has no lift.

Stepping stones across shallow streams, or paths that decided to become streams this spring. They're round, they're damp, they tip - but with sticks you never have all your weight on the one foot.

Being able to actually stand on rocks that are not flat

Pulling over to the steep, loose dirt area on the mountain side of a path so people can pass you, and not immediately turning an ankle or sliding back down to the trail

Preventing trail runners from mowing you down or assuming you'll teleport out of their way.

Reviewing every Dinosaur movie ever: #4 The Dinosaur and the Missing Link; A Prehistoric Tragedy

RELEASE DATE: 1917

SYNOPSIS: A group of cavemen join together to have dinner in their quaint summer cave before their meal is ruined by Wild Willie, an ape-man they call the missing link, who drinks up all their noodles. After chasing him off, the cavemen go out to hunt for new prey, all failing spectacularly in the process. The young caveboy, fishing in a kayak, witnesses Wild Willie attempt to wrestle and ride a sauropod until the dinosaur ultimately kills him. The caveboy stands over the ape’s corpse as the rest of the party arrive, gladly claiming it was he that killed Willie, as the other cavemen celebrate.

THOUGHTS: This short and simple film has its charm with the crude stop-motion animation and the humor of cavemen acting like middle class gentlemen with their “reading rooms” being open caves and apologizing for the lack of tea given it hasn’t been discovered yet. What really makes this special though is who made it, none other than Willis O'Brien, one of the most important people in film history. This is, in fact, his very first film and the start of his love for dinosaurs and monstrous monkeys. 

The title is arguably the best joke in this comedy, the dinosaur appears for only a short minute and the missing link is not meant to be sympathetic, so there isn’t any actual tragedy here. The humor is good enough to get a sensible chuckle and the art is endearing enough to keep your attention. It’s free on Wikipedia and only about 6 minutes long, so check it out and take a look at some of the earliest work of a giant of cinema.

             — welcome to shady grove,  washington state,  a fictional town in the pacific northwest,  united states.  a secluded, wooded haven located a couple hours away from any major city,  most people go their entire lives without ever even hearing about it.  for others,  it is home.  most moved away as soon as they turned 18.  but for some  ,,  if you dare to believe ,, they never truly leave  ,,  an afterlife & supernatural dwelling ground for spirits and some unexplained phenomenon ...                  tucked away among the typical charming features of small town life — coffee, ice cream, & flower shops ,, vintage/antique, vinyl, & thrift stores  ,,  diners, sports bars, restaurants — has always stood a large cabin along the edge of shady lake.  for those who grew up in the late 70s, 80s, and 90s, both the cabin and lake always sparked curiosity.  it was rumored that a set of twins living in the cabin estate drowned at shady lake in the 60s and ever since,  the cabin was completely closed off and inaccessible.                  shady lake remained a centerpiece of town:  everyone remembers fourth of july fireworks over the water ,, kayaking, boating, fishing and swimming in the summer ,,  bonfires & roasting marshmallows on its shore each fall ,, but for those who dared approach the lake after nightfall ... memories remain.  and rumor had it anyone who tried to sneak into the cabin was never heard from again.                   but it was all silly teenage imagination,  right ?  boredom in a rural town led their minds to come up with their own entertainment ... that’s what former residents tell themselves now as adults.  regardless,  when the infamous cabin estate popped up on airbnb and former students were invited to shady grove high school reunion in 2022  ,,  a group of friends just couldn’t help themselves but to rent it out and reunite for one last hurrah.  ( or the first of many ,, who knows.  )                   browsing the airbnb reviews ,, it’s easy to see that these former residents weren’t the only to find disturbances at the cabin:                 ‘ ... when i tried taking a swim one night,  i felt someone pulling at my feet trying to drag me under the water ...’   ‘ ... the pipes in all the bathrooms turn on by themselves at all hours of the day and night ... ’   ‘ ... flickering lights in almost every bedroom ...’  ‘ ... my daughter was walking on the dock and i saw her crash into the water ... she didn’t fall ... i know it sounds crazy but someone invisible shoved her off ...’  ‘ ... i was woken up at 2am to the sound of a little boy crying but no one was there ... ’   ‘ ... don’t look out the windows after sunset ...’   ‘ ... i swear i saw someone hovering above the water ... ’   ‘ ...  i didn’t feel alone in the shower ... ’   ‘ ... plates crashing to the kitchen floor when no one was in there ... ’   ‘ ... when i returned to my bedroom,  all my clothes were folded in my suitcase again as if someone wanted me to leave ...’   and those are just a few.                 call it stupidity  ,,  call it a midlife crisis.  good luck revisiting all your high school memories  ,,  insecurities  ,, friends ,, lovers ,, enemies ,, fears.  no matter how far you’ve roamed ,,  your high school ghosts lurking in shady grove will never truly let you go.
