Welcome to my latest summary of recent news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & ecommerce! This covers articles I came across from June 21 to July 13, although some may be older than that.
I may not be able to do the next update until early August, given the upcoming Etsy search changes and my schedule, but I will continue to tweet big news, & may do a short post or two here. 
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
On July 9, Etsy announced it would be giving “priority placement” in US searches to items that have no additional shipping cost starting July 30th. Obviously we don’t know how this will really work until we see it in action, but the outcry has been predictable. I summarize the facts in my blog post here. Etsy's Free Shipping Push Sounds Like a Marketing Gimmick (Motley Fool, through Yahoo)
Etsy faces backlash over attempt to push free shipping (Engadget) “And while a large business can take advantage of economies of scale to lower the shipping cost, that's not usually true for an individual crafter who may only sell a modest number of items.”
Etsy sellers aren’t happy with the platform pushing them to offer free shipping (The Verge) “Implementing flat shipping fees in prices can pose a challenge to international sellers who ship worldwide. Cambridge-based artist Katie Fuller, whose run her Etsy shop since 2015, says including the cost of shipping in her products would put her at a disadvantage. “If I [raise my prices], then I’ll be making my prices uncompetitive for customers elsewhere. Most of my customers are in the UK; it wouldn’t make sense for me to do it so it sounds like I can wave goodbye to my American sales.” 
Etsy Will Start Pushing Sellers To Include Free Shipping (Fortune)
Why Is Free Shipping So Important to Etsy? (Inc.) “... 75 percent of consumers today now expect their delivery to be free even when orders are less than $50 according to a survey published by the National Retail Federation earlier this year. That number has increased from 68 percent last year.”  
As marketplaces compete with Amazon on shipping, sellers are shouldering the burden (Digiday UK) “Like Etsy will soon do, eBay said it does prioritize items that ship for free in its search results and offers sellers pricing tools to help them better figure out how to factor in shipping costs.”
Etsy Stock Is Getting a Lift as It Jumps on the Free-Shipping Bandwagon (Barron’s) “Etsy stock rose 4.3% to $66.78 Tuesday afternoon as the S&P 500 was about flat. ... Roughly 70% of items sold on Etsy in the U.S. weren’t available for free domestic shipping in the first quarter, according to Etsy; it wants that number closer to zero.”
Remember, Etsy started boosting items that ship free to Canada in Canadian searches in January, but they never announced it, or gave us tips, or tools, etc.  We won’t know if the US version will work exactly the same way as the Canadian until the former is released; a short test in the US in late May-early June generally took the first three rows of search for free shipping items, even if they weren’t all that relevant. 
ETSY NEWS
Just in case you didn’t receive an email, Etsy is making changes to their policies. They include the fact that all new listings will be set to auto renew as of July 25 (but you can change them to manual), and info about their advertising tools. Keep an eye on the latter - I think they might be releasing something new soon.
Etsy will be releasing upgrades to the sales tool in August, including the ability to offer sales in specific countries only. Hidden in that post is also a promise to increase international advertising & promotion: “We’ll also continue to invest in the success of our international markets. In the coming months, you’ll see increased marketing efforts across many channels, all aimed at bringing more buyers from your country to Etsy.” (I suspect this is related to the free shipping announcement which came a few days later; they want to reassure non-US sellers that they won’t lose too many sales.)
Etsy released new attributes and sub-categories again, including in Accessories, and Bags & Purses. 
Shops in vacation mode are now showing up in search, as of July 10. The number of shops found in a shop search nearly doubled, to over 2.8 million, but only about half of them have active listings. No word on whether or not this is a permanent change; for many years, shops with no active listings have not been searchable on Etsy. 
Etsy is working on personalizing search by using image recognition identifying 42 different styles, and the engineers involved are presenting a paper [pdf] on this topic at a technical conference. They are about to start testing this, so expect to see more personalized results soon. I need to do a short post on this topic alone, but right now I need do some more research before that will be possible. I found this interesting, though: “Since sellers don’t reliably convey a product’s style in their descriptions, scanning text alone produced results that were “okay but not great,” says Fisher.” Quit being unreliable describers, folks! 😁
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
A common question: how long does it take to get to page 1 of Google search? Answer: it depends, plus it might not even be worthwhile if the search doesn’t convert. The article explains why.

I don’t expect anyone here will be paying for these services, but it is useful to see what you are up against when you are trying to get your own website to rank. More of us may also be up against AI-generated spam in Google rankings sooner rather than later. Someone is always trying to game Google. 
Was there a Google algorithm update around June 19th? Maybe. The big update at the beginning of June hit the Daily Mail hard, and the so-called “diversity update” apparently didn’t change much.

The best time to post on social media depends on the platform, your target market, and what you are posting.
Sell health products? Beware of the changes to Facebook’s algorithm, which are designed to limit views on fake health claims. 
Facebook outage gave insight into how their machine learning process describes your photos. “... a lot of internet users don’t realize the amount of information that is now routinely extracted from photographs”. 
Facebook will be reformatting their Business Page layout, & removing some sections, so make sure you check this out & move any content you want to keep by August 1.

Amazon’s Prime Day is actually 2 days this year - July 15 & 16. Apparently it is now the official start of back to school shopping for many people.
Beware of Alexa if you care about privacy & data retention: Amazon admits that Alexa data is kept “indefinitely”. “...for Alexa requests that involve a transaction, like ordering a pizza or hailing a rideshare, Amazon and the skill's developers can keep a record of that transaction. That means that there's a record of nearly every purchase you make on Amazon's Alexa, which can be considered personal information.” (Google Home is not necessarily better - they are letting subcontractors listen to your random conversations, not just your instructions to the device. “According to the whistleblower, the recordings presented to them are meant to be carefully annotated, with notes included about the speakers presumed identity and age.”)
Walmart’s ecommerce division may lose as much as $1 billion this year. Their brick & mortar business is still doing fine, however. 
You can now “try on” Gucci sneakers through its app. Expect to see more of this happening fairly quickly, which is something that people who sell clothing, accessories & jewellery should be watching closely. 
A. C. Moore is launching a new handmade marketplace, which you can sync to your Etsy & Zibbet listings. So it looks like that was their reason for investing in Zibbet a few years back. It’s not yet clear that they’ve put the work in to make this successful, but we’ll have to wait to see how it looks once it is launched, and how much they advertise it. 
BUSINESS & CONSUMER STUDIES, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
Dark patterns: how websites manipulate people into buying things they weren’t shopping for. [NY Times article - paywall after your limit of free monthly articles.] “... researchers developed software that automatically scanned more than 10,000 sites and found that more than 1,200 of them used techniques that the authors identified as dark patterns” including outright lies. 
Call-to-action phrases [infographic] that can help your pages convert. These work on web pages, emails, social media etc. My favourites are in the “lower-risk” section; I don’t think enough articles focus on this aspect of conversions. 
Wedding gift buying may be changing as traditional wedding registries drop in popularity. Apparently lots of people want cash to pay for their own expenses & trips now.

As COVID-19 spreads globally, many countries—including the United States—are mandating extreme social distancing measures. People are being urged to work remotely, schools have been canceled for weeks at a time and public gatherings are being discouraged, if not prohibited. It is increasingly likely that people will be self-quarantining in their home for weeks at a time and limiting their socialization for much longer than that.
These behavioral shifts are creating rapid changes in our economy. There will be both short-term and long-term impact as consumers and businesses are forced to change their behavior radically for weeks or months.
We are entering a new reality: the stay-home economy.
These shifts are also likely to change how people work and shop far into the future and accelerate the pace of changes already underway.
While some of the hardest-hit industries such as hospitality, travel and entertainment industries are sure to come back to life, other changes might be longer lasting. Perhaps organizations will see value in remote work and allow employees to continue it after the pandemic passes. Shoppers may be less interested in going to the grocery store once they’ve grown accustomed to home delivery.
While many businesses will struggle with the shift to a stay-home economy, both companies and content publishers in these 10 verticals are poised to thrive, especially though a relationship called affiliate marketing. Companies in these industries and business leaders looking to reposition their offerings would be wise to take note.
Remote Work and Education Support
It is likely that millions of employees and students will spend significant time teleworking and participating in distance learning. As a result, there will likely be a spike in demand for items to ease this transition such as laptops, flexible cell phone plans, headsets, monitors and superior wi-fi. Businesses that provide this enabling technology and equipment can capitalize on this with special pricing and promotions.
Direct to Consumer Brands

Two needs will immediately appear for many who are isolated due to COVID-19—the need to exercise at home, and the need to relieve the added stress of dealing with the pandemic. Brands like ClassPass can draw customers to their database of online yoga, pilates and HIIT classes. Meditation apps like Headspace and Calm will provide opportunities for users to unwind after a long day of solitary work or managing a household full of kids off school. Health apps like Noom will also see increased interest from people who will want to keep track of their health goals while they’re stuck at home.
Games, Toys & Projects
Parents, especially working parents, are scrambling to keep children entertained while they are home from school and isolated alongside their parents. You can expect to see families invest in toys, to keep their children occupied, as well as board games, projects and puzzles that can be done as a family in the evening and on weekends. Hasbro, which currently has five of the 10 top-selling board games on Amazon, has major potential here.
Influencer parenting bloggers are already putting together lists of their favorites items in these categories and sharing them broadly. Your business may want to consider partnering with them.
Food Delivery
As consumers are increasingly avoidant of public spaces, the restaurant industry will likely be hit the hardest. It’s no surprise that Dominos is the only restaurant chain whose stock is up this year.
Because people will be eating at home as often as possible, both direct to consumer meal prep companies such as Purple Carrot, Blue Apron and Hello Fresh and local delivery apps such as Instacart, Uber Eats and Caviar will have the chance to serve an increasing number of home diners. And as with direct to consumer vendors, these businesses may gain customers who try their services for the first time and stick with them well after the COVID-19 threat has dissipated.
Companies who deliver will also need to recruit thousands of new delivery people in the coming months to accommodate demand, so advertisers who can help promote these opportunities will do well, and college students who are home early should be good targets to earn some extra income.
Streaming Media
Streaming giants such as Netflix and Disney+ were already dominating the entertainment landscape, and they’ll only see demand increase. For working parents, Disney+ will help carry the burden of keeping kids entertained so parents can work during business hours, and in-home movie nights will become a leading social activity for individuals, couples, small friend groups and families.
But those aren’t the only players in the media world. Apple Music should see increased interest from people who suddenly have much more time to listen to music. And, of course, anyone who doesn’t already have Amazon Prime will also probably be enticed by its free and fast shipping, as well as a wide collection of streamable music and movies.
Audiobooks and eBooks
With public social activities limited, kids and adults will need to find ways to pass the time. And while purchasing physical books may not be practical during the pandemic, consumers will find the instantaneous accessibility of eBooks and Audiobooks enticing when they are facing another weekend stuck in the house. This will be another area where Amazon will succeed with the easy access of Kindle, and audiobook vendors like Audible can thrive as well.
There’s also an opportunity for publishers who create book reviews and recommend book lists as people research what to read and listen to during their time at home.
Gaming and E-sports
Video games are a dominant market force as is, and they’re the perfect activity for both parents and kids who are isolated in their homes. Not only will game-sellers profit, but online gaming platforms such as Twitch will likely see a significant uptick in users who visit more often, and for longer periods of time. With these platforms drawing so many eyeballs, they’ll become key places for advertisers to invest in, especially to reach younger buyers.
Esports will also see a surge in popularity as well. While in-arena esports events will be cancelled, these video game leagues are prepared to move entirely online. An industry that was already tracking toward US$1.5 billion in 2023 may grow even faster—and become highly valuable to advertisers.
Virtual and Video Tools
Even as the stock market plunged in the past two weeks, the videoconferencing leader Zoom is one of the few stocks up this year, and is earning press coverage for giving services to schools for free.
You can expect other remote software providers such as GoToMeeting, Asana and Slack to experience similar upticks in demand as more employees work remotely and government and non-profits learn how to go digital and virtual. This will speed up a transition that was already underway, and many organizations will likely continue to rely on these tools after they return to the office.
Virtual Health Services
Perhaps the most-dire need during the COVID-19 outbreak is for virtual health services. Individuals will be more wary than ever of sitting in a medical waiting room or standing in line at the pharmacy. Companies that either provide prescription deliveries, such as CVS, or allow virtual consultations with doctors, like Roman, will likely draw more patients than ever before.
Opportunity in the Stay-Home Economy
The COVID-19 pandemic, and the stay-home economy that accompanies it, will change much of the world even after the threat has diminished. Many companies have an opportunity to provide vital goods and services during a stressful time—and build lasting consumer trust in the long-term.
Businesses in these industries can capitalize by creating a great initial experience for new customers. As people research products that can make isolated living easier, they will likely gravitate toward publishers and websites who have credibility showcasing products in these industries. They could make great partners for your business through affiliate marketing.
If you have a service business, I would look to these industries as the companies that will be growing and hiring this year. Same for employees who are looking for a job or a career switch.
The stay-home economy will drastically change the business world. However, companies who are smart and use this time as an opportunity to innovate will look back on this as a turning point for their businesses.

Publishing has been one of the oldest industries known to mankind and it’s evolving rapidly. They are now equally involved in exploring the transformative ways in which their audience can consume the content published. Publishers and content creators need to ensure that they are updated on the latest trends in digital marketing and publishing.
Below, we explore 5 trends in publishing that are on the rise:
Subscription Models:
Subscription-based services are still on the rise. In 2018, digital publishing subscriptions were the most important revenue stream (44%) for news publishers worldwide. However, having access to exclusive articles, photographs, or joining the subscribers-only forums is not enough to persuade readers/viewers to become subscribers.  Email newsletters, exit intent pop-ups, and push notifications are three popular triggers that publishers are using today to convert casual readers/viewers into paying subscribers. It’s always best to provide options because it allows the user to choose instead of paying a compulsory amount to get access to the content. Insta Novels, a reimagining of Instagram Stories to provide a new platform for some of the most iconic stories ever written, was first launched in August 2018 with the newly digitized version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by the New York Public Library. Through a partnership with a New York ad agency – Mother, they created “Insta Novels,” a fun, engaging storytelling format that could draw in a generation of young readers with microscopic attention spans. NYPL’s goal was to reach beyond the confines of its four walls and convince more people to read books. In pursuit of this mission, the institution has turned to one of the largest social media platforms in the world, bringing classic literature to Instagram’s 400 million daily active users.

Global monthly podcast listener figures are expected to reach 1.85 billion by 2023. This means podcasts are in boom at the moment and publishers are doing everything they can to get on the action. As people listen to podcasts while working at home, exercising, or commuting, they are able to consume longer forms of content more easily, as they go about their day, without having to give their full attention to the piece of content. This is promising for publishers in all industries as users can listen to any podcast that’s important to them – whether it is celebrity gossip or intellectual debates.
Audiobooks are the new darlings of the publishing industry. In fact, audiobooks are currently the fastest-growing segment of the digital publishing world. Reportedly there’s a 33.9% increase in the number of audiobooks published in 2017 vs. 2016 according to Association of American Publishers. Audible is an extremely popular audio book membership option. Amazon launched Audible and its audiobooks subscription service in India, in 2018. Initially, they started with a 90-day free trial option with credit towards three free audiobooks, followed by a monthly, half-yearly and annual plan. Its large selection of books and well-thought-out app are two of the reasons it’s the best subscription service for its price.
Short, snackable video contents dominate consumer’s social media screen time. These videos range from DIY videos like how to cook tasty treats to short tutorials like workouts to do at the gym. Either way, consumers love to watch bite-sized videos of 30-75 seconds and video producers have largely ditched the standard format of one – two minute videos. The challenge, for publishers, is to keep users entertained in that short span of time, by creating videos that are fun and engaging but do not demand a lot of time or focus.

Good collaborations with other publishers, organizations, and even influencers can mean a content package that’s more significant and powerful than one that could’ve been created by one publisher alone. As different organizations bring together their unique capabilities and expertise, the end result is almost always a piece of content that provides a higher value to consumers. It can also mean digital innovations such as collaborations between publishing houses and production houses. Book to screen adaptations also ensure better exposure for authors while turning out to be a great source of income for the authors. The greatest examples of all times are the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC comics and the Harry Potter Universe. Speaking of India, recent hits like Raazi, Sacred Games, and the upcoming series on Shantaram are great examples of book adaptations. The most recent example would be the latest Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s big reveal at Times Square. The crowd included fifty “wizarding world influencers”, vloggers, bloggers, and everyone who was invited for the launch. The producers of Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, in partnership with entertainment advertising agency AKA NYC, took over Times Square and used 51 towering screens to promote the play’s expansion to new international markets and reveal its new tagline: “Sometimes, Darkness Comes From Unexpected Places.” in the form of an immersive theatre.

Mobile is now the superior device for online activity for most people. Thus, it is crucial to have a good mobile experience on your publishing platform. A mobile strategy curtails a lot of things and there are endless possibilities to be creative. Some of the ideas to have a good mobile presence include things like having:
Mobile friendly pages – easily navigable pages on the mobile i.e. web pages that do not hinder the ability of a user to perform any action or cause the user any annoyance.
AMPs – these are web pages that load faster on the mobile and shown preference on the mobile SERPs. AMPs also have a higher chance of showing up on Google Discover.
PWAs – these are websites that look and function like a mobile app, built to take advantage of native mobile features, without requiring the user to go on the play store/app store and download or purchase the app locally.
Push notifications – sending push notifications onto the mobile phones of the users (after taking permission, of course) through your mobile app or through your website.
Vertical content – any videos created for the mobile should favor a vertical format as vertical videos are played and preferred by all the top social networks – Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, etc. Vertical videos also perform 58% times better than their horizontal counterparts in terms of user engagement.
Creating good content will not only lead to user delight but will also generate backlinks as more web pages link to your content. One of the characteristics of high-quality content is that they have high E-A-T (expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness). If you haven’t heard the term before, it is part of Google’s quality guidelines to determine where a page will rank on Google for a keyword: Google evaluates the expertise of the author; the authoritativeness of the author, the content, and the website; and the trustworthiness of the author, the content, and the website, among other things, in order to assign a Page Quality rating to a particular page of content. Higher the Page Quality rating for your content, the higher you will appear on Google! Creating exceptional content also means capturing audiences for all kinds of content – from writing, to audio-visual, and even more!
