Nigerian governors are secretly forming state security outfits - Gani Adams raises alarm
Tumblr media
OPC leader and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has raised the alarm over the alleged secret recruitment of private individuals to form state security outfits.   He accused some governors of the Southwest states of politicizing the issue of security of lives and property in the region and alleged that some governors are training their personal aides as special forces.   Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State on Wednesday, October 30th, Adams condemned such training by some governors in the South-West without the knowledge of the inspector general of police or himself as the chief security of Yorubaland and leader of Oodua People's Congress.   Describing the activities of the governors as unacceptable, Adams said he would not answer them if any security threat arose in Yorubaland. He commended the complementary roles between the police and the OPC on security matters, especially in the South-West, adding that stakeholders should support the collaboration rather than work against it. “Do you know that some South-West governors are recruiting their political errand boys for security purposes without consulting me or the OPC anymore? And when the issue of security threats comes, they will remember to call the Aare Ona Kakanfo to come and intervene. I’m not getting a salary from the government, but I’ve been using my money to run this position and our money for this organization. When a government politicizes security, it’s doomed to fail. It’s a signal to Nigeria. If there’s any security problem in the area, they should not hold me or the IG responsible. The IG has done his part by partnering the organisation with antecedents. But some of our governors want to politicize security issues. It’s uncalled-for and it’s unacceptable,” he said.

Gani Adams advocates for Sowore’s release
Tumblr media
The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams has appealed to the Federal Government to release the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (ACC), Omoyele Sowore. Adams said that such arrest portended grave danger for Nigeria’s democracy. The publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria was arrested by the police from the Department of State Services (DSS) over a planned revolutionary protest scheduled for Monday, August 5. The Police had alleged the activist of a plot to force a regime change in the country. Reacting in a statement, Adams said the arrest was an abuse of human right to freedom, stating that the planned revolutionary protest could not be said to be treasonable since it was yet to be implemented before he was arrested by the DSS. Adams, who faulted the rationale behind the arrest, said it was unfortunate that Nigerians usually forgot events and memories of the past. He said that Nigeria’s problems emanated from the military’s dictatorship and tendency to gag the press and prevent freedom of speech and expression. Aare Onakakanfo however, said with the information at his disposal, the convener did not consult many of the civil society groups. The planned protest, he admitted, would have presented to Nigerians, the needed opportunity to express their feelings to President Muhammadu Buhari. Adams said that Nigerians were entitled to express their feelings, provided the protest was peaceful and violent free and it also represented the feelings of Nigerians. “Not everybody can have access to the presidency in Abuja. This is democracy, not militarism, where people are cowed and jailed over issues relating to their welfare” “Sowore is an activist, and he was part of the struggle for this democracy. Therefore, he is entitled to express his feelings and that of Nigerians in a democratic setting”. “I think the Federal Government should consider his freedom as a panacea for peace. For instance, I wonder how a peaceful protest by harmless citizens will now turn to a treasonable felony. “It is unfortunate that many of the people at the corridors of power today were part of the protests against former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, but today the situation has changed. “I am afraid they wanted to draw the nation backward to those years of the military, where people’s rights to freedom and other fundamental human rights were alien to the military. “Even in countries that have good institutions and good welfare policies, the citizens still organise peaceful protest and the government will surely listen to them. “As an activist and promoter of peace, I have engaged in various rallies and protests. On each occasions, we consulted widely, taking into considerations so many factors, including the rights of Nigerians to embark on protest. “I also noted that such rights should not translate to a violent or forceful protest” “Nigeria is a democratic republic, therefore, unlawful detention of a people can lead to further crisis and the Federal Government must try as much as it is possible to avoid this by listening to the cries of Nigerians”. The Federal Government should free Sowore and formulate policy programmes that have direct impact on the mass of the people” Adams said. Read the full article

Aree Onakakanfo speaks tough on Fasoranti’s daughter’s murder
Tumblr media
The Aree onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams has warned that the Yoruba ethnic group should not be blamed if it decides to react to the killings in the region. He was reacting to the killing of Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Reuben Fasoranti, leader of Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group. Olakunrin was shot dead by armed men along Benin-Ore road on Friday afternoon. Although Yinka Odumakin, spokesman of Afenifere, attributed the incident to herdsmen but police said  the identity of the killers remained unidentified. In a statement by Kehinde Aderemi, Adam’s media aide, said the Yoruba race was not short of ideas needed to put an end to atrocities in the region. Adams, who is the leader of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), described the death of Olakunrin as an invasion of the peaceful atmosphere of the south-west region. “We only want the whole world to know what has been done and being done to our people. They should be aware of the actions that preceded our reaction when it eventually comes,” he said. “We are not bereft of ideas of how to stop this criminality on our land. It is just so that we should not be blamed when the reaction comes. “We are like the proverbial goat that is being chased. When it gets to the wall, it will certainly react. We are at that stage now.” He commiserated with Fasoranti, praying God to comfort him and his entire household. Read the full article
