“Shades of Justice,” a CSI: Miami Rewatch: Episode 8
There’s something I’ve been neglecting to do in my previous posts. I haven’t been giving credit to the writers and directors whose hard work I’m reviewing. I want to correct that now. So, before I discuss the episode in question, here are the writers and directors for the first seven episodes.
1x01- “Golden Parachute”- Writer: Steven Maeda; Director: Joe Chappelle
1x02- “Losing Face”- Writers: Steven Maeda & Gwendolyn M. Parker; Director: Joe Chappelle
1x03- “Wet Foot/Dry Foot”- Writer: Eddie Guerra; Director: Tucker Gates
1x04- “Just One Kiss”- Writers: Laurie McCarthy & Matt Witten; Director: Scott Brazil
1x05- “Ashes to Ashes”- Writer: Mark Israel; Director: Bryan Spicer
1x06- “Broken”- Writers: Ildy Modrovich & Laurence Walsh; Director: Deran Sarafian
1x07- “Breathless”- Writers: Steven Maeda & Gwendolyn M. Parker; Director: Charlie Correll
There you have it! Now, let’s move on to the next episode.
1x08- “Slaughterhouse”
CASE: When a blood-soaked toddler is discovered wandering the streets alone, the CSIs follow the clues back to a truly horrible crime scene. The girl’s entire family has been shot to death, with only the father surviving. I like this episode quite a bit! It’s disturbing, but it’s supposed to be. I like that the episode never tries to downplay or gloss over the gruesomeness of this case. Of particular note is the moment where blood from the ceiling drips on Delko’s neck and he looks like he’s about to puke. That’s a good moment from Adam Rodriguez. Another thing I like is the way the characters react after it becomes clear that the father is the one who committed this crime. None of the characters, least of all Horatio, ever act like Jason Caplin is at all sympathetic. No matter how much he tries to play the victim, they never give him the benefit of the doubt. It feels weird to say that, given that I’m generally an optimistic person who wants to believe the best in people. But considering everything that’s been happening in the United States over the past few years, it’s nice to get lost in a world where the bad guys always face justice. I think that’s why I enjoy crime shows and find them relatively easy to watch despite all the horror. It lets me momentarily forget that this isn’t always how it works in real life.
CHARACTER: I have yet to mention Detective Sevilla, even though she’s appeared sporadically in the previous seven episodes. Since she’s a very prominent part of this episode, I thought now was as good a time as ever. The reason I haven’t mentioned her previously is simply because she’s not a main character and doesn’t get any storylines or personality outside of her job. Even when the main team spends most of the episode in the lab focused on the case, the interpersonal relationships are usually interesting enough to warrant analysis. As far as Detective Sevilla is concerned, there’s not much to say. This is also the episode in which we learn that Eric Delko is half Russian and half Cuban. We’ve already been told that he has Cuban ancestry, but this is the first we hear about his father being Russian. This will play an important role later on in the series.
CRAFT: This episode was written by Laurie McCarthy and directed by Dick Pearce. I’m sad that McCarthy only writes three episodes for the series. Her first two have been pretty great! Much like the how the previous episode was a good indicator of what to expect from CSI: Miami in terms of writing and storytelling, this episode exemplifies the visual style I enjoy so much. The slightly orange hue and and other aesthetic details nicely capture the scorching Florida sun. The set design and blood work in the Caplin home is also rather well-done.
Grade: B+
While it’s not quite a favorite, this episode is a good one! It’s intense and engaging, which is all you really need from a series like this. Next up is “Kill Zone.”
