“When in doubt, count!” 

My mentor Dale Pon didn’t get much public recognition for his smart, strategic and successful creative work in media promotion. I’m posting about a few projects I was lucky to work on with him.

Scott Webb sent along this advertising campaign Dale Pon created on the cusp of the 1979/80 era of WNBC Radio in New York City. Bob Pittman, Scott, and I recount our view of it below, and I’ll update as more come in from other colleagues. 

There have been countless lessons I learned from Dale Pon about promotion and marketing, but the one that has stuck with me most is...

“When in doubt, count!”

Sounds pretty boring and I thought Dale was a creative guy. Count, like “4 out of 5 dentists recommend Crest”? Really, that’s a good solution?

But Dale’s point of view was the numbers can always point you to a creative solution that can work if you use them as a jumping off point. Basically, as you’re trying to figure out a pitch, a unique selling proposition for a campaign, if you get stuck, look at the numbers. It’s an idea that so pervasive that our mutual co-worker Bob Pittman has even started a podcast on the principal called “Math & Magic.”

To me, this maxim was often how to do a lot with a little, but it didn’t become super clear to me how “counting” could lead to anything useful until I saw it in amazing action back at the beginning of our relationship in the late 1970s.

Fred Seibert:  In 1977, Dale Pon had hired me at WHN in New York City, moved me to Los Angeles and back again. He’d successfully and ____ promoted WHN into the 2nd most listened to country music station in American –remember this station was in New York, home to Frank Sinatra, not Johnny Cash– and I was his lackey,

In early 1979  Dale abandoned me. He went to a New York radio competitor, telling me that not only could I run the WHN promotion department –a job for which I had virtually no experience other than my short stint with him. (“Hey, you produced a jazz record that got a Grammy nomination, you can be good at this too.” Really?) He’d been whisked away by WNBC, a relative ratings laggard, home to Imus in the Morning, run by veteran Bob Sherman and upstart program director Bob Pittman. Sherman’s public goal? “Beat WABC!, which had been New York's #1 station for decades.”

“Oh, I need you to help me produce the TV campaign. If WHN finds out and fires you, I’ll bring you over.” 

Oh great.

Next thing I know Dale’s whipped out the latest New York Arbitron radio ratings books and hands one to me. “Go to every demographic page and circle WNBC. Let’s see what’s what.”

A half hour later I said, “You’re fucked. At best they’re #14 in the prime demos.”

“Here!” he points, “They’re #2!!” It was something like Adult men 35-49. 

I was confused. The group that advertisers wanted was Adults 18-49, maybe on a stretch Adults 25-49. What the hell?!

“We’ll note the demo in the mouse type at the bottom. No one will notice!”

No one will notice?!

Within an hour Dale had sketched out the pitch. A take off on a successful Avis Car Rental campaign.

“We’re #2, we want to be #1! WNBC Radio 66!” 

Before I knew it, Dale had WNBC putting out a call to it’s listeners to send in  Polaroids of any twins who listened for a potential casting in commercials.

Huh, twins? “We’re #2.” Twins. OK, he’s got a creative idea. 

Soon enough, he had me coming to an audio studio after work to moonlight the soundtracks for the campaigns. (WHN never caught on, and I stayed until I want to MTV Networks.)

“Twice as many winnas!*** Twice as many prizes!! Twice as many chances to win!!!” 

And you know? The damned thing worked like crazy. When in doubt, count. Indeed. 

***Remember, we were in New Yawk City. You know, that accent.

Bob Pittman: “...being bold; getting attention; and dominating the airwaves…” 

In addition to my time working with Dale Pon when he created ‘I Want My MTV’ for us in the very early days of MTV and when he helped me relaunch Six Flags Theme Parks, Dale was a lifelong friend and was my partner in building WNBC Radio in the late 70s.

We had completely rebuilt the programming and brought Don Imus back to WNBC from Cleveland, and Dale used the Imus return to help build the huge cume for the radio station and lead WNBC to its eventual position as number one.  WNBC went from an old, staid, second-rate New York radio station to the number one radio station through building the right  programming; Don Imus was the anchor and nighttime disc jockey Alan Beebe’s introduction of ‘WNNNNNBC’ gave the station its unique hooks. Dale took those  – and the rest is history.

Dale taught us all about having a clear and valued claim; being bold; getting attention; and dominating the airwaves with frequency.  Although he may not have won awards for his creativity, it worked time and time again and those of us who adopted his philosophies had that same kind of success in other businesses at other times.  But make no mistake about it – it was Dale’s influence that got us there.

I got an internship working for Dale Pon two days a week at WNBC Radio during last 3 months of my senior year at Sarah Lawrence College. There were 3 other interns and mostly we made sure that content winners got their prizes and that all the promotions were administered properly. 

There were A LOT of contests and giveaways. 

I had never worked at a radio station before and I just assumed this level of promotion fervor was standard operating procedure. The station was based on the 2nd floor of 30 Rock and at the time it seemed glamorous. I was in line with David Letterman at the cafeteria and Saturday Night Life was rehearsing on the 8th floor and Tom Snyder was in the office down the hall. 

Dale’s office was the dead center of the office when you walked in the door. He ran the team like it was a barroom in the middle of a battlefield. He was loud and always barking out orders. It was stressful and fun. On the last day of our internship we were given T-Shirts that read “I survived Dale Pon”. I, for one, was afraid to put it on - for fear of what his reaction might be - but also because I didn’t want it to end. 

A few weeks later, after he abruptly fired one of his managers he hired me on the spot to join his battalion, er I mean, team. We went to work on the TV advertising campaign that would take WNBC from #2 to #1 in the NYC market. 

We put a call out for twins and cast dozens of twins to kiss Imus. Shooting that campaign was the first production I had ever been part of and it was fast and furious and Dale took me to almost every meeting and along the way from storyboarding with the cinematographer to instructing the animator to directing sound and even buying the air time. 

I didn’t know it but I was getting a master class in creative strategy that was all about winning. It was not just fun – it was a mission to transform what had been a shitty, demoralized loser of radio station to being totally made over into an unstoppable #1 radio station. 

When the dust settled WABC, formerly #1 gave up completely and changed their format from music to News and Talk. An outcome that blew me away at the time. I thought Dale would be happy at the utter defeat he delivered to his competitor but he hated that they never took the bait to respond to his challenge. He wanted a worthy adversary but he never got it. They ran. 

It was the most stressful and wonderful time of my life and it was impossible to not be fascinated by everything Dale did. He was a great teacher and often just told me to sit close to him and just watch everything he did. He taught me how to see and how to think and to understand that creativity was about problem solving and winning. Thank you Dale.

In Norse mythology, a valkyrie is one of a host of female figures who choose those who may die in battle and those who may live. The capsule collection or whatever she calls it with Smart Works are fluff. Cheap quality, foreign made, means lots of $$$££££€€€€ for our girl, and Bumble app is aligned with a Smart works which means these women will get poor quality cheap clothes, then pay to register to find a mate!

MM ANON has used this before from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The essence meaning is once you’ve tested out your friends and found them trustworthy, hold onto them! Many decisions and choices are imminent, PA cooperation, the SA and Africa tour. What to do, when to do it. double bluff

A double bluff is an action or statement that is intended to appear as a bluff but is in fact genuine. Whose double bluffing here? There are many possibilities here. There is the heir and a spare. Is she thinking somehow she will end up Queen if there is enough malicious gossip as been spread a few days ago which l won’t speak of. I personally think this is LG playing games with her, cat and mouse. She is playing so many games with so many people simultaneously, with so many lies, it’s mind boggling and then add substances to the mix! It’s maybe a quadruple bluff of a happy life. If you read her two twitter accounts, the two l know of, life is grand, and simply couldn’t be better. I especially love American English with British terms thrown in, both usually spelled wrong and used in the wrong meaning!!

Just pure evil machinations, selfish intentions and from some of the photos the way Catherine is glared at and the children, especially the one photo where Catherine is pregnant, my mind shudders with what possible thoughts might be going through someone’s head.

1959 film of Tennessee Williams’ play, a young woman is traumatized and committed after witnessing her cousin’s violent death on a trip to Europe. Her aunt, wants to hide the events of her son’s death and attempts to bribe young surgeon to perform a lobotomy on the girl. By the way a lobotomy is a surgical operation involving incision into the prefrontal lobe of the brain, formerly used to treat mental illness.

Wonder if institutionalization is the route of dealing with a person is the lesser of two evils as per yesterday’s riddle clue??

Sharon Stone Cold

Sharon Stone, that scene from Basic Instinct keg crossing, that photo from the tennis on Saturday with madams sitting position was sooo familiar. Stone cold, hard, no emotion, self-focused on meeting one’s own needs, wishes goals desires etc. Yeah, again, just going to put that there, you’re all smart!! You know!!

She’s a devil woman with evil on her mind by the great Sir Cliff Richard, who by The by has had his own legal troubles which l will not go into. Again that word, PP, angry, comments by the millions regarding the conduct of the Sussexes, her by choice, him by assignment. Just utter frustration and anger at this horrendous situation and the entire conglomeration of issues that are going along with it.

Sword of Damocles.

This will require a bit of story telling/ explaining.According to the story, Damocles was pandering to his king, exclaiming to him that he was truly fortunate man of great power and authority, surrounded by magnificence. In response, the king offered to switch places with Damocles for one day so that Damocles could taste that very fortune firsthand. Damocles quickly and eagerly accepted the king’s proposal. Damocles sat down in the king’s throne surrounded by every luxury, but the king, who had made many enemies during his reign, arranged that a huge sword should hang above the throne, held by only by a single hair of a horse’s tail to evoke the sense of what it is like to be king: though having much fortune, always having to watch in fear and anxiety against dangers that might try to overtake him. Damocles finally begged the king that he be allowed to depart because he no longer wanted to be so fortunate, realizing that with great fortune and power comes also great danger. is, perhaps madam is slowly becoming “woke” to the fact that her life choices have led her to a very very dangerous intersect, prison, institutionalizations, or worse by her enemies who were formerly her “friends”/backers.

This is referencing our beloved Princess Charlotte. Her nickname was Lottie in preschool, l think that is ever so sweet. She definitely has a mind of her own. One of my favourite memories is the day of Prince Louis’ Christening, as they walked out of the Chapel, she told the photographers assembled there for the photos for the press “YOU’RE NOT COMING!” I still chuckle at that. I look so forward to watching her grow up.

It was a normal noon at College, Students wondering around campus paying little to no attention to their surroundings some sipping drinks, readings a text book in prep of a test the next day, talking and hanging with friends or just looking at their phone. The weekend was around the corner.

"John, get out here already we're gonna be late for the gathering Jesus!" yell a ready to go Craig. Their friend Vanoss decided they should have a get together, all the guys have been busy with either their jobs or classes so he suggested they meet up at his dorm and have a 'Guys night'. Which just meant they were probably gonna get a tad drunk and play random games. "I’m coming don’t get your dick in a bunch." John replied trying to fix his tanium hair in the bathroom mirror. He had thrown on a random blue flannel and a white shirt with ripped jeans, light baby blue nail polish tacked on his nails. Once satisfied with his look John walked outta the bathroom straight to the corner of the room near the couch were they toss their shoes. Craig was waiting rather impatiently at the door with their part of the refreshments they were meant to bring to the gather. They all had to bring at least one kind of item to the dorm, rather it be drinks a game or even random party supplies such as silly string. They all planned to stay the night at Van's dorm so they could do what ever they wanted without the need of going back to their individual housings.

As John kicked on a pair of short heeled boots he stood to face the man tapping his foot in annoyance of the wait. "Johnny Boy looking rather nice for heading to a dorm room with Assholes." Craig snickered and he looked at his friend's clothing then looking him in the face with a smirk. "Who you trying to impress, the walls?" he said raising his eyebrow at John as John rolled his eyes.  "I mean the walls are pretty cute." he joked along side Craig. "Yeah Yeah, But really whats with the niceness of-" he said waving his hand at John's attire "this?". "Well if you MUST know, ya snoopy prick, Smits gonna be there." John replied matter of fact-ly. Craig chuckled at him and just waved him to the door knowing wasting anymore time would make them late. They grabbed their share of drinks and headed out the room, talking slightly while walking to their friends dorm which was on a higher floor of build.

On the Walk Craig Teased John a little for why he was dressed nice. Knowing fully well the nail polish sporting male fancied the Slight Younger guy that goes by Smit. Smit never went by a real name and all teachers and class mates called him 'Smit' or 'Milky Boy' as his friends say. John didn't mind the slight teases, joining in on some just for the hell of it. On the way to their destination they met half way with a few of their friends. Ohm and Cartoonz were the first they ran into while heading to the elevator. They had bought a load of Silly String with Light snacks, they went on about how they were gonna try and make a silly string mask while one of the others were asleep. Next was Tyler who was a floor above them, sporting Vodka glasses. Jiggly, Scot, and Marcel had a bunch of random things, Marcel and Scot had to call jiggly to help carry some of their stash which is how they ended up meeting the others. Delirious, Moo, Nogla and Terroriser were already in the dorm setting up when the others arrived.

It was around 8 pm when they all had everything set up; Games in the small living roomish area on their coffee table, Drinks and Alcohol in the Mini Kitchen, Snacks on the Counter scattered out and every other Random thing brought in a bag on the floor next to the couch. Craig went off with Vanoss to the hallway outside the room to order pizza after getting everyone's request written on a little sticky note. Smit had yet to arrive to Johns disappointment, He had Texted Vanoss explaining he was gonna be late to which he told the rest. In the dorm room Thing were slightly starting to kick off, Nogla declared a uno battle between Him Ohm Terroriser and Moo, The losers had to down 1 shot of Vodka each. The other guys just stared at the 2 settings up an uno game, some of the guys brought their laptops for games as they did have them for a reason.

Just as the first round of Uno , that didn't happen to last long, came to a end Vanoss and Craig walked back in with a third head to the pair. Everyone turned to the door besides the 4 on the ground who were laughing at Ohm who lost the round for him and Terroriser due to ohmming it. Smit pushed through the 2 standing in front of him which only caused them to giggle, He slightly yelled 'Yeet' while holding up 2 bottles of Mango Rum. Everyone joined in on the giggling. Smit was no taller than most of the group, being the shorted one by far, which made his small self look like a kid who just won a prize. John stared at the male and just smiled slightly to himself. Smit noticed him and laid the drinks on the counter, then happily walked over to his friend.

After Ohm and Terroriser downed a shot each Terroriser yelled at Nogla for a rematch. The rest of the guys booted up their laptops and got on scribbl.io. After a few more rounds of those games the pizza had arrived, Hearing a knock at the door Vanoss offered to get it seeings how everyone else was to busy with their yelling to even notice. Getting the pizza and laying it on the table Vanoss proceeded to yell at the guys in his living room that dinner was here and if they didn't come get it then it's their fucked. John jumped up from his spot on the couch where him, Smit and Craig had took to play their rounds. Smit watched him get and followed shorty after, Craig the last to get off the couch as it was his turn in Scribb.io.

While eating pizza, Smit got up and asked someone if they wanted some of that rum he brought. John Shook his head as the others either declined or said they'd get some after they ate. Shrugging off the replies, Smit walked to the counter and grabbed to small glasses for him and John. John watched Smit has he pored the drinks, enjoying the site of his friend and to one level crush. Getting lost in thought he almost completely looked over the fact Smit had caught him gazing over his direction. Craig noticed John's lost-but-lovingish stare at Smit, like a Dog with his favorite toy, and couldn't help but chuckled. He Nudged John who popped outta thought and noticed Smit was smiling and staring back at him, He felt his face become slightly more heated.

Smit returned with the drinks and giggled at a blushing John, which didn't help John, next to him. Handing him his drink and retraining the conversation he was having with Craig before leaving. John couldn't help but feel embarrassed at being caught in a gaze Come on John knock it off  he mentally slapped himself. John had had a thing for the white haired kid for a while, they met in a class they shared start of semester. A class John would skipped but went to just to see and talk to him. They became friends over a common interest of video games and slight fashion tastes, John introduced him to Craig  who he shares a dorm with when He first invited Smit over. Smit had transferred from Canada for a certain program he had to take for Design, which was what caught John's interest at first. Over the months of them hanging out and playing a few games together John noticed how much he had fallen for the boy.

John was lost in thought once more and subconsciously sipped his drink, the rum burning his throat as it went down but he didn't notice. Smit had saw John who was staring sorta at him but off to the window that was just to the other side of Smit while leaning slightly on to his shoulder. He tried to get John's attention while trying to keep him on his shoulder, he liked the slightly comfort john leaning on him gave, he wasn't gonna lose it just to knock him outta his daze. John popped back into reality once he felt someone nuzzle their nose into the crook of his neck.

John blushed wickedly hard as he noticed where the affection was coming from, Smit didn't remove his face from that position, finding it rather nice and soothing. The Mango rum started to settle in once he came back to his senses, which was fine, the tingle of the rum on his throat as he finished the drink off was oddly of liking to John.

About 2-3 am- half the drinks were gone, and the dorm was decently trashed, and everyone was rather close to crashing. Vanoss had called it a night and told Delirious he could crash in his room with him, the two normally would sleep together if they had friends over seeings how they shared a dorm room and His room could be used to house them. Craig and all but Smit and John were passed out in the living room either on the couch or on a pillow in the floor under and around the coffee table. John had stared out onto the night from the window in the living room, Smit scooted over and placed his head back into the crook of John's neck. Both were decently intoxicated, tho not enough to render them 'drunk'. John took his gaze off the stars in favor of looking at the male who wrapped his arms around John tiredly, to John it was a blessed sight; The one he loved half asleep practically cuddling him like he was a staffed bear. It set off a spark in him, a warm fuzzy feeling he didnt want to lose but enjoyed in the moment while he had it.

John moved Smit to where he was basically sitting in his lap and wrapped his arms around him like Smit did before. John wished the moment could last forever. Could be in this spot forever. Everything about this he loved and knew would be gone in the morning.

"Hay John," Smit with his eyes still closed in a tired rasp voice from the alcohol, "Yeah Smit?" John asked resting his head on Smit's shoulder. Resting his eyes underneath his eye lids. "I love you"

Tim burton is one of my favorate directors as he has his own unique style and creates films that are to his liking and are very entertaining. Also he is a very good director since i always hear about how the people involved can rely on his organisation and skill as a director, i hope to use him as a rolemodle for my unit 8 piece as a director using his style as my inspiration for my ghost tale.

Our idea is for 4 friends to go talking and laughing about the ghost stories that surround their location and them convincing each other to enter the woods that most of the stories relate to. After a lot of teasing about being scared they enter the woods laughing and jocking about the stories until they see a figure that seemingly dissapears after being spotted. They brush it off as a person messing about and go to investigate about what was going on and what they saw but where they saw the figure there is now a doll, laughing they throw the doll between them and then hear a scream which they also blow off as kids until the second scream is closer as they drop the doll screams are herd and sticks are thrown out of no where at the group. As they panic one of them goes missing and one by one from that point we see there death.

We are hopeing to film in friday woods for this dramatical piece.

my music video will be of dIsabled dancers in a dance class to be inspirational as well as being a music video. my hidden meaning is for people to see that no matter what you camn still do what you want whever you have physical, mental or peer problems/illnesses.being yourself is hard, but when you feel most comfortable doing the things that people say you cant you just have to go for it i learned this from experience.

i want to put a quote at the end of the video an inspirational quote. The music i used in the end was the script - hall of fame.

EVALUATION

My music video had a lot of inperfections and a lot of mistakes but i still hoped i got the message across.

EVALUATION - CAMERA WORK

My camera skills could have been a lot better as much of my angles were the same or had very shaky hand held footage.I feel i could have done a lot better if i had tried to plan better or even if i had booked a steady camera from the media department. My camera skills were basic and not that of a high quality, though i did have an array of different angles.

EVALUATION - ORGANISATION

My organisation skills were not that great either as i did not try my hardest but i did get dancers and a location in 3 days with consent forms. I was able to book a camera, get a group of dancers and also get consent forms in 3 days and still get everything i wanted to get.

EVALUATION - EDITING

My editing was not very clear cut as it was a little hard as i am not very experienced with the editing software and am not very confident in editing. It was a amature styled attemp at editing but i believe it will surfice.

EVALUATION - OVERALL PRODUCT

My overall project was not as bad as i thought but was still lacking in many areas and is a very amature attempt at a music video considering it was done by a media student i am a little dissapointed in my self for the music video but i still feel i have delivered the message i had hoped for.

EVALUATION - MESSAGE TO SEND

I think the message i was trying to sent was recieved with the music video and i think it was still a powerful message even though the video was a little shabby. My message was the you can do whatever you want to and that phsical and mental disabilitys cant stop you from trying nor can it stop you from living your dream.
