goosebumps
lena oberdorf x reader
summary: your girlfriend is super touchy.
Tumblr media
"you know how I get those goosebumps every time, yea?"
bayern munich vs wolfsburg, one of the most exciting days in the women's bundesliga.
moving to bayern munich from chelsea in 2022, you were adjusted into your new life.
this meant that you were prepared on going against wolfsburg-- and you were prepared of playing against your girlfriend of two years-- lena.
your mutual best friend-- lea-- put the two of you onto each other, lena and you had many similarities that didn't go unnoticed between your peers.
being silly, sweet, dedicated, and motivated were the top four personality traits in the both of you.
overly competitive is another.
during the rivalry game, you had the ball and were going to pass down to sydney. before your foot went to tap the ball, lena's body side tackled you-- which caused you to trip onto the ground.
you were not hurt, but you were concerned about wolfsburg aggressive approach this game.
staying on the ground, you clenched your teeth as you held your ankle.
lena stood up in horror, before she realized that you were trying to get her carded.
the german noticed how relaxed you looked, in comparison to times when you were injured. she looks over at popp and shakes her head before walking over to you.
you told the ref that you're fine to play and stood up to be checked into the game again. looking over at lena, she shakes her head with a smirk-- which caused you to give her one back.
a minute later, she was behind you when a corner kick was being taken for bayern-- conceded by wolfsburg.
"you know-- your acting might be believable to them, but not to me." lena whispered.
you rolled your eyes, playfully, before speaking--
"as longs the ref believes it, I'm calm." you say as you move forward to receive a possible header from your teammate.
suddenly, you felt a pair of hands holding onto your waist tightly-- and the familiar body of your girlfriend pressed against your back.
"your ass looks so good in those shorts, too bad its in the wrong color." lena whispers in german.
this time, you rolled your eyes seriously as you jump up to get the header. unfortunately, the ball was too high.
a wolfsburg defender conceded a corner kick again, so you were set to try and head the ball once again.
"do you think you're getting away from me?" lena asks, licking her lips but still paying attention to the game in hand.
"lena we are in a middle of a game." you scoff.
lena is very touchy, you are obsessed with it, but you were surprised that she would do it to distract you in a match.
"I am aware." lena blows on the back of your neck, goosebumps immediately appeared.
thirty minutes later at the end of the game, it was a draw between the red and green. 2-2.
by the locker rooms, in the privacy away from fans and cameras, you saw your girlfriend and gave her a wave.
you assumed that she was busy with her teammates so you didn't want to disrupt her.
however, lena waves her hand for you to come over to her.
your face showed a look of content and joy as lena wrapped your body with her strong arms-- her right arm holding your waist and her left arm around the back of your neck.
she kisses your temple a few times before moving down to kiss your lips.
you forced yourself to pull away and look at your german girlfriend with a smirk,
"well, neither of us won today." you comment in a low voice.
"yes but don't get too excited, we will crush bayern next time." lena's hands move up and down your waist softly as you scoff.
"what other methods are you going to use next time?" you ask, your arms going to smooth lena's freshly washed hair as her eyebrows knitted together.
"huh?"
"I thought your touches and comments on the pitch was a tactic to prevent me from getting a hat-trick after my second goal." you say as the taller girl is rubbing your back now, under your shirt.
luckily, everyone was in the locker rooms or already headed out to go home (or on the bus for the bayern girls).
"no not really, you're irresistible." lena smirks, leaning her head back on the wall as you gave her another kiss.
"same goes for you--i'm coming over tonight, so I'll see you later oberdorf." you smirk before exiting her arms, walking away as she watched you with desire.

It’s been a rollercoaster 10 years since James Rodríguez wowed the world
Tumblr media
It's been 10 years since James Rodríguez scored *that* goal. Yes, that one. You remember it well, surely.
The setting: Brazil's historic Maracanã stadium. In the 28th minute of their Round of 16 contest against Uruguay, Colombia's Abel Aguilar lobbed a header to James, who played it off his chest and volley-kicked it into the top of his opponents' net, near the corner, well beyond a diving Fernando Muslera. In a post-match summary of the goal, the poetic British commentator Peter Drury declared, "First touch, sumptuous. Second touch, magical. That's not a left foot. That is a wand." Uruguayan defender José María Giménez could do nothing more than stand with his hands on his hips, staring at the net in disbelief.
"My word, this boy's a star!" Drury proclaimed in the moment. James did not disappoint. He added another goal that game, taking his tally to five in the tournament after just four games. He'd add another in a quarterfinal loss to Brazil. Though Colombia would bow out at that point, James would go on to win the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer and, later, the Puskas Award for the year's most beautiful goal.
But it hasn't been a bed of roses for James in the ten years since Rio. Today, on his 33rd birthday, we take a look at the rise, fall, and revival of the Colombian midfielder.
The rising star
James had been building a strong career for himself in advance of the 2014 World Cup with productive seasons at Porto (32 goals in 107 appearances; 6 trophies) followed by a high-profile move to Monaco — a 5-year contract with a €45 million transfer fee. But in a post-World Cup interview, James said the magic words: that it would be his "life's dream" to play for Real Madrid. Ten days later, and with 4 years still left on his contract, James had signed with Carlo Ancelotti's band of superstars, a roster that included the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni Kroos, Kareem Benzema, and Sergio Ramos to name just a few. (Casillas, Pepe, Bale, Marcelo, Navas to name just a few more.)
Things started well at Madrid. Even amidst a team rich in talent, and despite being out for two months with injury, James contributed 17 goals in his first season. But later injuries and diminishing returns in successive seasons meant that James could no longer keep a regular place on the squad. New Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane also didn't seem to favor James' playing style, leading the Colombian to request a loan to Bayern Munich, where we would be reunited with Ancelotti.
Internationally, James was still making waves. At 25, he was named Colombia team captain for the 2016 Copa América, leading them to third place, losing only to eventual winners, Chile.
Tumblr media
Fading away
Injuries plagued James for quite some time, keeping him from action for both club and country. After such a dazzling display in 2014, James sat on the bench at the 2018 World Cup and watched as his team went out to England in penalties in the Round of 16.
Despite scoring some key goals to help Bayern Munich win two league titles and a Pokal, James had netted only 15 goals in his 67 appearances with the club, and the owners opted not to pick up the option to purchase him. With no home in Munich or Madrid, he moved to Merseyside for a short stint with Everton (again, reuniting him with Ancelotti).
But failing to impress in England, and with no other clubs willing to take him on, James found himself playing for Qatar's Al Rayyan and didn't contribute much to their mediocre season. The Qatari team let him go just one game into his second season. He moved to Greece where he again lasted only one season after poor results with Olympiacos.
And James wouldn't get to return to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup as Colombia failed to qualify, finishing three points behind Ecuador for the last guaranteed spot. How did the World Cup star fade so fast for James?
Fast forward to summer 2023: James once again finds himself in South America. He now plays for São Paolo in Brazil, 13 years after he had left Argentina's Banfield, where he began built the reputation that catapulted him to European football. A name that had once dominated discussions among pundits — that had been proclaimed as "the next great thing" — had now faded into near oblivion. People weren't talking about James Rodríguez anymore.
Tumblr media
Renaissance
After their failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, James expressed uncertainty as to whether he would ever again play for his country. That may have lit a fire under the team and perhaps even under him. Something started to happen...
Colombia started to pile up the wins, or at least had avoided losing. They had racked up victories against Mexico, Germany, and Brazil, among other countries. And before you knew it, they entered Copa América 2024 on a 23-game unbeaten run.
Enter James.
The attacking midfield has been a stalwart for Colombia all tournament and has been one of the keys to their success. In Colombia's five games so far, he has netted one goal and contributed six assists, surpassing Messi's tournament assist record. He's been man of the match for four of Colombia's five games of the tournament so far.
And when Colombia face off against Messi's Argentina in Sunday's final, James will need to play a pivotal role. Will his remarkable revival culminate in extending Colombia's historic unbeaten run and winning their first Copa América since 2001?
In addition to reinvigorating this Colombia team and resurrecting his career, James may also be accomplishing something even more outlandish — he may have some neutrals paying closer attention to him and Colombia than to Messi and Argentina. Colombia has arguably been the Copa's best team. Argentina has yet to come up against substantial competition and have had two victories over Canada.
Meanwhile, Colombia have had already had to battle both Brazil and Uruguay, defeating the latter while down a player for an entire half. The talented superstars of La Albiceleste, the world's #1 ranked team for the last 18 months now, can always dazzle and can outplay any team on their best day. But we've yet to see their best at this tournament, and it's feasible Colombia's passionate, fiery play could be a game-changer.
The bookies may have already made their prediction, but Sunday's eventual outcome is anything but clear. What is clear is that James Rodríguez will have a key role to play in whatever the result.
He's hoping it's a role for the better.

Harder in an interview: “We will bring our quality to the pitch”
Pernille Harder has been chasing goals for FC Bayern Women since this season . Ahead of the upcoming top game on Sunday against VfL Wolsburg, fcbayern.com  spoke to the 30-year-old Dane about her current rehab, her first months in Munich and the duel against her former club.
The interview with Pernille Harder
Hello, Pernille. After your injury, you are already on the road to recovery. How is your rehab going so far? Pernille Harder : “So far it’s working very well. I'm on the right path. Everything is going as planned at the moment and I'm feeling better every day. I notice how I'm making steady progress. I’m very satisfied and of course I’m looking forward to returning to the pitch soon.”
Before your injury, you had already scored three goals for FC Bayern Women in your first four competitive games. How comfortable do you already feel at FC Bayern?  “I really enjoyed my start here in Munich. The team welcomed me well and made things very easy for me right from the start. I was also able to internalize our style of play very quickly. It's a shame that I got injured so early in the season in Essen, but I'm looking forward. When I'm back, of course I want to pick up where I last left off ( laughs ).”
You've been at home in Munich for around three months now. Were you able to settle in well in your new home? “Yes, I really like it here in Munich, the city is great. I have already tried many restaurants and cafés and of course also explored the city. There are many great locations, especially in Maxvorstadt. I'm looking forward to the next few years in Munich. It’s very promising here.”
Let's take a look at the sporting side of things: The top game against the Wolves , who you played for from 2017 to 2020, awaits on Sunday. During your time there you played with Ewa Pajor and Alexandra Popp, among others. What makes VfL's attack line special? “We all know the qualities of Wolfsburg’s offensive. Ewa Pajor is incredibly fast and has a very good finish. Alexandra Popp's strengths are primarily in the box; her header is very dangerous. We have to take good care of them from the start.”
Wolfsburg won't have an easy time against your defense; you have the best defense in the league with only two goals conceded. What makes you so strong in the defense network? “I think we are very stable as a team. This is incredibly important for the entire season and we want to continue to work on it continuously. We have very good defensive players in our team and a clear structure. The whole team puts a lot of emphasis on defensive work, I think that’s why we’re so strong at the back.”
VfL and FCB Frauen are the dominant teams in German women's football, having won all of the last eleven championships between themselves. Are there similarities between the clubs? "Yes of course. The way you train in big clubs like Bayern, Wolfsburg or Chelsea is often very similar. All of the top teams are characterized by an exceptional mentality and attitude. You can feel that every day and it certainly sets the clubs apart.”
Wolfsburg surprisingly failed to qualify for the Champions League. In the league there was a draw against TSG Hoffenheim after four wins. How do you assess VfL's current form? “Wolfsburg is a very strong team. They are always there, especially in these top games. We have to be ready. But I also believe that we have a very strong team and will bring our quality to the pitch on Sunday. We are in good form and I firmly believe that we will leave the field as winners. But of course we know that we have to work hard for victory. It will be a close game, but at the end of the day we will get the win. I’m looking forward to watching the game in the stadium on Sunday.”

Dortmund faces Augsburg away on Sunday. If it wins that game, and its final game at home to Mainz next weekend, Dortmund would end Bayern’s 10-year reign as German champion.
Bayern Munich wasted its lead on Saturday as Leipzig dug out from a deficit to win 3-1 in the Bundesliga, allowing Borussia Dortmund the opportunity to move top going into the last end of the week.
Bayern simply had to dominate its last two matches to make certain of asserting its record-expanding eleventh continuous title, yet Leipzig's shock win in Munich gave Dortmund the drive.
Dortmund faces Augsburg away on Sunday. In the event that it dominates that match, and its last game at home to Mainz one weekend from now, Dortmund would end Bayern's 10-year rule as German hero.
It had begun so well for the Bavarian force to be reckoned with, which ruled the initial half hour against the wary guests.
Thomas Müller - making his second back to back begin for Bayern - set up Serge Gnabry for the opener in the 25th moment.
In any case, Leipzig answered with three great possibilities in succession in the 34th, 35th and 36th. Yann Sommer answered with three great recoveries.
Konrad Laimer, who is supposedly set to join Bayern next season, scored a merited balancer in the 64th, then, at that point, Christopher Nkunku scored from the punishment spot in the 76th after he was fouled nearby by countryman Benjamin Pavard.
Dominik Szoboszlai fixed it with one more punishment in the 85th after Noussair Mazraoui was punished for handball.Leipzig merged third spot and gotten its Bosses Association capability place for next season.Bayern faces Cologne away for its last game and must now likewise expect a Dortmund goof.
Hertha Berlin consigned
Hertha Berlin was consigned from the Bundesliga in the wake of surrendering in the fourth moment of injury time to draw with Bochum 1-1.
Previous Association Berlin safeguard Keven Schlotterbeck headed the objective that sent Hertha down to the subsequent division.
It's Hertha's seventh transfer from the Bundesliga. Just Nuremberg (nine) and Arminia Bielefeld (eight) have been downgraded more times.
Hertha required a success to delay the transfer choices to the last day of the time and it was solid for the host group after Lucas Tousart at last made the forward leap with a header to Marco Richter's corner in the 64th moment.
"We weren't consigned today. Today we really conveyed a decent game," Hertha mentor Pál Dárdai said. "We ought to have killed the game, we had five or six great possibilities. We ought not be embarrassed about our presentation. That's what the fans saw."
The two groups hit the post in the last minutes before Schlotterbeck was left unopposed to head Kevin Stöger's corner past Oliver Christensen in the Hertha objective.
It guaranteed Hertha remained last without any possibility completing over the last two. Bochum was undependable yet.
Schlotterbeck and his Bochum partners hurried to celebrate before the meeting fans, while the remainder of the arena was left in paralyzed quiet. Some Hertha fans set off clearly bangers that resonated around Olympiastadion, while there were boos and whistles from certain allies when the group moved toward after the last whistle.click here
"I can barely handle it, it's simply miserable," Hertha veteran Ruler Boateng said with tears in his eyes. "I love the club and came here knowing it's not all blushing. Presently have the opportunity to refocus and reinforce the club, regardless of whether it's in the subsequent division."

EPL: Man United hand Southampton fourth consecutive loss in 0-3 win
Tumblr media
Manchester United gave manager Erik ten Hag some breathing space with a 3-0 win at Southampton on Saturday thanks to goals from Matthijs de Ligt, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho. However, United had to ride out an early Southampton storm and the outcome could have been vastly different had Andre Onana not saved Cameron Archer’s penalty at 0-0. De Ligt’s first United goal and Rashford’s first for six months quickly flipped momentum in the visitors’ favour just before half-time. Southampton’s woes were compounded when captain Jack Stephens was sent-off 11 minutes from time for a wild challenge on Garnacho, who rounded off the scoring in stoppage time. Saints remain without a point from four games on their return to the Premier League, while United’s second win of the season lifts them up to eighth. Ten Hag began the campaign already under scrutiny after surviving an internal review of his position in May following an eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season. Back-to-back defeats before the international break to Brighton and Liverpool had ramped up the pressure even more on the Dutchman and the Red Devils had to ride their luck early on at St. Mary’s. Ten Hag dropped Casemiro to the bench after his nightmare showing in the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, but new signing Manuel Ugarte also had to wait for his debut as a second-half substitute. United still struggled to control midfield in the opening quarter and were indebted to Onana’s penalty save as a turning point in the game. A failure to make the most of some promising build-up play has been the story of Southampton’s their return to the top flight. Teenager Tyler Dibling caught the eye on his first Premier League start and his trickery lured Diogo Dalot into a rash challenge inside the area. But Archer’s spot-kick lacked conviction and Onana parried his attempt before easily clutching the striker’s follow-up header at the second attempt. Just two minutes later, United led as De Ligt put a difficult week with the Dutch national team behind him to open his account. The former Bayern Munich centre-back was subbed off at half-time by Ronald Koeman after errors that led to two German goals in a 2-2 Nations League draw in Amsterdam. De Ligt rose to fame at Ajax under Ten Hag, who was rewarded for his faith in the 25-year-old after starting him ahead of Harry Maguire. A short corner caught Southampton napping and Bruno Fernandes’ cross perfectly picked out De Ligt to head into the bottom corner. Saints brought in Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal on the final day of the transfer window to boost their chances of survival and the England goalkeeper did at least keep the score down. Rashford’s much-needed goal was momentarily delayed by a fine Ramsdale save at his near post. However, Rashford’s wait since March to get on the scoresheet came to an end on 41 minutes when his low strike from outside the box curled into the far corner. Ramsdale denied De Ligt a second before half-time as United threatened to run riot. But the second period was far more sedate as the visitors comfortably held Southampton at bay before the home side’s frustration bubbled over. Stephens’ unneccessary lunge caught Garnacho on the knee and was rightly punished with a straight red card. The Argentine then rubbed salt in Southampton wounds with a thumping finish from Dalot’s cross in the 96th minute. Read the full article

Man Utd fans tell Agent Zirkzee to bring him home as amazing tweet reveals bromance with top transfer target Musiala
JOSHUA ZIRKZEE’S friendship with Manchester United transfer target Jamal Musiala was on show on social media following the Dutchman’s goal on Saturday night. Zirkzee, 23, bagged the Netherlands’ opening goal in a 5-2 win over Bosnia in Eindhoven. 4 Jamal Musiala, centre, and Joshua Zirkzee, right, were team-mates at Bayern MunichCredit: Getty 4 Musiala joked with Zirkzee about his goal on Instagram on Saturday night And he did so in the most creative of ways. When Xavi Simons’ shot looped up off a defender, Zirkzee produced a backwards header into the bottom corner. The goal caught the attention of Musiala – who also netted for Germany in their 5-0 win over Hungary. Reacting on Instagram, he said: “2 way shot creator,” referencing a style of player in the basketball game NBA 2K25. Zirkzee, who was team-mates with Musiala at Bayern Munich before he left for Bologna in 2022, responded with two crying laughing emojis. And Man Utd fans are convinced the bromance is one way they can convince Musiala to come to Old Trafford. One said: “Agent Joshua we are seeing you come next summer .” While another added: “Bring him home.” CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERS 4 Zirkzee scored 11 goals in Serie A for Bologna last season 4 Jamal Musiala racked up 16 goal contributions in his 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign And a third replied: “Musiala to United in 2027. I will be there.” The winger, 21, who represented England up to U21 level, has a contract with Bayern until 2026. Man Utd new-boy Joshua Zirkzee branded ‘class act’ after incredible gesture to fans after last-minute debut heroics But comments earlier this week have raised speculation over his future in the Bundesliga. The remarks came during a conversation about him and Zirkzee jokingly trying to convince one another to join their respective clubs. He told Welt am Sonntag: “You always joke around with friends and dream of playing together in a team one day. “The jokes go both ways: I also told Josh that he should come back to Bayern but you shouldn’t take that too seriously. “I am very happy at FC Bayern and fully focused on our goals with the club and the national team. I don’t think too much about where I will be playing in five years. “Things can always change quickly in the world of football.” Zirkzee, who now has three caps for the Netherlands, revealed to fans following his arrival at Man Utd in July that he had “tried” to convince Musiala to come to Old Trafford. Musiala has contributed 44 goals and 31 assists in 166 games for Bayern since joining from Chelsea in 2019. Meanwhile, Zirkzee scored on his Man Utd debut, coming off the bench to bag the winner against Fulham. He was used as a substitute again in the 2-1 loss to Brighton, before he started the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool. Source link via The Novum Times

That was definitely a great game, especially as a German :)
First of all I’m really happy that the team finally has a shimmer of hope again and something to look forward to after all these tough months. Would have been really gutted for them to lose another big game and therefore the Olympia dream.
They had their head in the game from the very first minute. They showed that they really want to go to Olympia, fought the whole time and showed up as a team.
Ofc there were moments where they started to shake a bit, but they never lost their goal and finally played like a team again. They had each others backs.
I was a bit sceptical about the lineup, but the changes worked and especially Jule did her job very well. The sub at halftime was also a good choice, Schüller played with her strengths (first and foremost her speed).
And also really happy that Endemann got her first cap for Germany.
There were also some unlucky moments on both sides. The Netherlands had some great chances, but our defence threw themselves in front of every ball. And obviously Merle did some really important saves. Then we also have Nüskens big chance in the first half where the wood saved the Netherlands and also overall a great defensive performance by Janssen, etc.
The goals kinda fitted perfectly. Klaras goal was a great combination of Obis fighting sense, a great cross and then maybe on purpose, maybe by accident, a direct header to Klara. And Leas goal was a typical header, again one of Leas strengths.
Still one has to congratulate the Netherlands for a good game. They not only had these big chances, but they were also absolutely strong in the defence. Maybe sometimes not concentrated enough which led to some bad passes and missed chances. But overall the game could have ended differently, if the luck would have been on their side.
There is still a lot to work on, but now the team deserves to celebrate this win and I’m exiting to see, what the future holds. It will also be interesting to see if the next coach will be integrated in the next matches before Olympia. I think it would benefit the team considering that the Euros come after and there aren’t that many international fixtures.
Hope the euphoria is coming with the Bayern girls back to Munich :)

Bayern Edges Union In Rescheduled Bundesliga Fixture
Tumblr media
Bayern Munich: Bayern Munich closed the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Union Berlin, thanks to Raphael Guerreiro's goal. The Bavarians, now four points behind Leverkusen, nearly scored six minutes into the game as Matthijs de Ligt's close-range header tested Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow, who also thwarted Dayot Upamecano's follow-up shot from a tight angle, reports Xinhua. Chances were scarce for the remainder of the first half as the Eisernen maintained a solid defense. In the closing stages, Leroy Sane's attempt from the edge of the box went wide, and Leon Goretzka couldn't beat Ronnow either. Bayern got off to a flying start in the first minute of the second half when Harry Kane's powerful shot deflected off the left post to Guerreiro, who accurately slotted home. Thomas Tuchel's side continued to press and nearly doubled their advantage ten minutes later, but Kane's goal was disallowed for offside by the VAR. Union showed resilience in the 72nd minute when Jerome Roussillon forced goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into action with a sharp-angle shot following a counterattack. It remained Union's only significant opportunity, while Bayern failed to extend their lead despite several promising chances. Kane and Thomas Muller kept Union's defense occupied in injury time, but the visitors stood their ground to prevent further goals. Read the full article

Bayern 8-0 Darmstadt: Kane scores Hat-trick
Tumblr media
Bayern 8-0 Darmstadt: Kane scores a hat-trick. On an exciting afternoon at the Allianz Arena, 10-man Bayern Munich defeated nine-man Darmstadt 8-0 after a goalless first 45 minutes thanks to a hat-trick from Harry Kane, including one from within his own half. After just four minutes, Joshua Kimmich was sent off, but the hosts had the man advantage at halftime thanks to red cards for Klaus Gjasula and Matej Maglica. This was the first time three men had ever been sent off in the first half of a German top-flight match. Six minutes into the second half, Kane broke the tie, but his second goal—a stunning effort from within his own half—was the game's high point. He also earned help Jamal Musiala get his first of two goals before scoring his 12th goal in nine games so far this season in the Bundesliga. The biggest loss in the history of the visitors was also aided by two goals from Leroy Sane, who also set up Kane's third. After just four minutes, Kimmich took down Marvin Mehlem at the edge of the area and was given a straight red card, which was deemed to have denied the visitors a clear chance to score. After Gjasula was deemed to have tripped Konrad Laimer, Bayern was initially given a penalty. However, referee Martin Petersen reversed his decision after reviewing the play, ruling that Gjasula was the last man and the incident happened outside the penalty area. As a result, the Albanian was dismissed in the 21st minute and the home team was awarded a free kick. In the 10-v-10, Darmstadt was keeping up with the Bundesliga champions, even having the upper hand in shots for the opening 37 minutes. However, they were the ones who brought about their own downfall when Maglica caught up with Kane almost exactly where the red-card incident had occurred. The result remained the same, but despite threats from Kane and Sane—who had a goal disallowed for offside—the visitors, reduced to nine men, managed to hold the score 0-0 until halftime. Five minutes after Sane's six-yard tap-in of Laimer's cross, Kane's diving header broke the scoreless draw to start the second half. After that, it was a completely different story. Then it was Musiala's time, increasing the lead to 3-0 with a Kane assist and opening the floodgates as Sane scored his brace four minutes later with an 18-yard strike past Schuhen. Subsequently, Kane unleashed his masterpiece, a brilliant strike from a little over the halfway line that had Marcel Schuhen scrambling in vain as he saw the ball land in the back of his net. Before Musiala put Bayern's seventh past Schuhen, Muller made it six with his first goal of the year. The Darmstadt goalie, who was anxious to prevent his team from losing by double digits, made a few excellent saves, but he was unable to stop Kane. Wanting more, the England captain seized the ideal pass from Sane to seal his hat-trick and lead Bayern to a decisive victory in the second half. source credit ALSO READ: Man Utd against Man City: EPL rivals go to fight at Old Trafford Read the full article

Les deux prochains matchs seront cruciaux pour la dernière apparition du groupe C avant qu’il ne se termine au début du mois de novembre. Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall hits out at VAR and lack of goal-line technology after Bayern Munich defeat | Football News
Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall questioned whether VAR decisions and a lack of goal-line technology cost his side in their Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich. The Gunners were beaten by Lea Schuller’s first-half header at the Allianz Arena, before they twice saw efforts of their own cleared off the line by the hosts – though Eidevall questioned whether one or both may have crossed the goal…

Does Haaland make Man City favourites? Is VAR getting worse?

With this season's Champions League quarterfinalists now set, our writers answer some of the big questions arising from the round of 16 second legs. With this season's Champions League quarterfinalists now set, our writers answer some of the big questions arising from the round of 16 second legs.    8:00 AM ET This season's Champions League round of 16 is done and dusted with some European heavyweights falling by the wayside like Liverpool, who have reached three finals in the last five years, and a Paris Saint-Germain side featuring Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi. Friday's quarterfinal draw will feature plenty of European heavyweights such as defending champions Real Madrid and recent winners Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are also in the hat along with Portuguese side Benfica, while Serie A has three clubs in the last eight: AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli. Our writers Mark Ogden, Julien Laurens and James Olley answer some of the big questions arising from this round of games. - Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)
What caught your eye from the round-of-16 second legs?
Ogden: The poor standard of refereeing, and VAR, has really stood out during the round of 16, and it is even more noticeable because the Champions League generally operates to a much higher level than the domestic leagues in Europe. Two English teams, Chelsea and Manchester City, have been the biggest beneficiaries of some bewildering decisions, with German sides Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig on the wrong end of them. Chelsea were fortunate to be awarded a penalty during their 2-0 second-leg win against Dortmund when defender Marius Wolf was judged to have handled the ball. Referee Danny Makkelie didn't point to the spot until the VAR suggested a review on the pitchside monitor. Wolf was so close to the ball that he couldn't move out of the way, but Makkelie awarded the penalty when he should have dismissed the VAR review. Leipzig suffered an even heavier blow during their 7-0 defeat at City. VAR once again intervened in a penalty incident, calling on referee Slavko Vincic to review an apparent handball by Benjamin Henrichs. The reality was that Henrichs had his back to Rodri, whose header brushed his arm and fell to a City player without deviating in movement. It was incredibly soft, but once the penalty was awarded, Erling Haaland put City 1-0 ahead. Moments later, Timo Werner was booked, despite being on the receiving end of a foul by Ederson which could have resulted in a red card for the City goalkeeper. Yet VAR did not intervene. Two huge decisions which, had they gone Leipzig's way, could have resulted in a much different outcome. VAR and the referees have to be better in the quarterfinals and beyond.

2 Related Laurens: It is probably the most obvious answer (and, I promise, I tried to find something else to be more original) but nothing can beat Haaland's quintuple against RB Leipzig. He might have got six goals had he stayed longer on the pitch, but Pep Guardiola took him off after 63 minutes. The Manchester City striker became only the third man in Champions League history to score five goals in the same game, after Messi and Luiz Adriano, and by becoming the youngest-ever player to reach 30 Champions League goals. For his club, he is now the top scorer in a single season with 39 goals, beating the old record of Tommy Johnson from 1929. Haaland still has as many as 19 more games to play before the end of the season. It is still an amazing achievement; Haaland had eight shots on the night, all on target, scored five goals with an xG (Expected Goals) of less than three. He was so aggressive in the box, so alert, so on it. He looked possessed at times. It was just incredible. Olley: If Graham Potter makes a success of his time at Chelsea, he may well look back on their second leg win over Dortmund as the turning point. Managers often talk about uniting the fans and making their home stadium a difficult place for visiting teams, but in Potter's case he did so in the knowledge this game served as something of a referendum on his management. An unconvincing win over Leeds United a few days earlier had at created a modicum of momentum heading into the game but, make no mistake, defeat against Dortmund would have ramped up the pressure on Potter. Dortmund were depleted -- Karim Adeyemi, Youssoufa Moukoko and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel all missed out injured while Julian Brandt was forced off after just five minutes -- but Chelsea produced a committed and defiant display, overcoming their goal-scoring problems to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge. The players showed they were behind Potter and although it will be some time before the majority of the fans are convinced the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss is the right man to lead them back to former glories, this win buys him time with a Champions League quarterfinal as proof of progress. They surely aren't good enough to lift the trophy in Istanbul, but, then again, most people felt that way before they won in 2012 and 2021... play1:09 Pep's idols: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods ... and Julia Roberts? Pep Guardiola reveals his biggest failure at Manchester City was when his idol Julia Roberts went to visit Manchester United instead of his club.
Now the quarterfinalists are all set; which team is your favourite to lift the trophy in Istanbul?
Laurens: Pep Guardiola can be as sarcastic as he wants about the Champions League and what a failure he is and will always be, even if he wins the competition for the next three years. He can talk about Julia Roberts, Richard Gere or any Hollywood actor as much as he wants. His team are once again the big favourites of this Champions League, and not winning it would be a failure -- again. City have everything, really: the manager, the squad depth, the superstars, the clutch players, the winning mentality, the experience of going far and the motivation of not yet winning it. They should have won it already and they will surely eventually do so. This year is their year. The rest of the field is not at their level, not even Bayern Munich, Napoli or Real Madrid. Time is running out for Kevin De Bruyne, who turns 32 in June. Riyad Mahrez and Kyle Walker are already at that age, while Ikay Gundogan is out of contract this summer. Bernardo Silva could be leaving at the end of the season, too, a year after pushing for a departure. The most important thing is that surely Pep and City have learned from their past mistakes in the Champions League: the 2021 final loss, the semifinal of last season and all the previous quarterfinal disappointments. If they can do that, they will finally be ready to achieve their ultimate aim. play2:29 How good has Victor Osimhen been? Steve Nicol, Craig Burley and Alejandro Moreno offer high praise for the Victor Osimhen after Napoli advance to the next round in the Champions League. Ogden: This may be a case of heart overruling head, but Napoli have been the most exciting team in this season's Champions League and it would be great for the game if Luciano Spalletti can take the club all the way to glory in Istanbul. They certainly have the players, and it's not just about top scorer Victor Osimhen. Kim Min-Jae, Piotr Zielinski, Hirving "Chucky" Lozano and Giovanni Simeone have all had outstanding seasons, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has arguably been the breakthrough star of the 2022-23 Champions League. The big challenge for Napoli, who are nailed on to win Serie A this season for the first time since 1990, is to hold their nerve and play their own game against a European superpower such as Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. If they stick to what has served them so well, Napoli can beat anybody, but the top clubs usually find a way to win the Champions League. We haven't seen a surprise team win the competition since Jose Mourinho's FC Porto in 2004, so maybe this is Napoli's time. Olley: It should, in all probability, be Manchester City but I can't say that a team clearly stands out from the rest at this stage. Mark makes a compelling case for Napoli -- and an 18-point lead at the top of Serie A gives them the chance to do what other clubs can't, which is rest players in the league to keep everyone fully fresh for the latter stages of the Champions League. City have been knocking on the door for years but, even though they thrashed Leipzig in midweek, they have not been anything like their fluid best for much of the season. The jury is out as to whether this Bayern Munich is as strong as previous incarnations -- although we must all take note when club legend Lothar Matthaus says this group may be their best-ever squad. And then we come to the team that mask their own weaknesses and exploit others better than anyone else: Real Madrid. With little conviction, given Napoli's form, City's individuals and Bayern's pedigree, perhaps Real's knowhow can help Carlo Ancelotti trump his rivals once more. play2:35 Nicol: Only thing for Liverpool is they didn't get embarrassed Steve Nicol, Craig Burley and Alejandro Moreno react to Real Madrid beating Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate to advance in the Champions League.
After Haaland's five-goal haul, what's the most impressive individual performance you've seen live in the Champions League?
Olley: Messi scoring all four as Barcelona beat Arsenal 4-1 at Camp Nou in April 2010. Maybe the Gunners made the mistake of taking the lead. At that stage, Arsenal led this quarterfinal tie 4-2 on aggregate but what came next was a true force of nature. Messi took it upon himself to deliver the kind of virtuoso performance that epitomises his glittering career. The first goal was a fierce drive as the ball fell to him on the edge of the box, the second a close-range finish lifted over Manuel Almunia. His hat-trick goal was sublime; sent racing clear, he scooped a left-footed shot over the onrushing Almunia with embarrassing ease, prompting that worshipping celebration from an awe-struck Barcelona crowd. The fourth came with a drop of the shoulder, panicking defenders contorting themselves in ever more desperate shapes, and a shot saved by Almunia but drilled through his legs on the rebound. This was a high-pressure occasion but here was a 22-year-old making the game look so breathtakingly, devastatingly simple. Perhaps Wenger put it best: "He made the impossible possible." The image that lingers in my mind came just after the final whistle. Messi was given the match ball and as Arsenal's players looked crestfallen, Barca supporters stood in disbelief, the little magician at the centre of it all simply spun the ball in his hand wearing a beaming smile, so fresh-faced he looked ready immediately to do it all over again.

It may seem unlikely now, six years on, but at the time the game was billed as a clash between Ronaldo and Atleti's rising star Antoine Griezmann, who was enjoying an outstanding season for Diego Simeone's team. There was genuine belief that Atleti could avenge the Champions League final defeats of 2014 and 2016 against their city rivals, with the France forward inspiring them to the final and outshining Ronaldo in the process. But Ronaldo was having none of that. It seemed as though he was given extra motivation to prove he was still the king of Madrid and he dominated the game. He also recorded two landmarks by netting his 50th goal in the Champions League knockout stages and equalling Messi's record of seven hat tricks in the competition. Laurens: I could pick any moment from Karim Benzema in the knockout phase last season; I was there for all of it. I had never witnessed anything like it before. He scored 10 goals in the six games that he and Real Madrid played on their way to the final at the Stade de France. Read the full article
