bernie and heugh have one of those relationships where they’ve known each other for twelve years dated back to when he was establishing himself as a capable addition to heron , yet were able to slip into the friendship with the ease of people who had known each other for twice as long within only a matter of months . they have a score of inside jokes to the point where he’s almost lowkey jealous of all the inside jokes she has with other members of their team that he isn’t apart of . it’s gotten to the point where their inside jokes have become post verbal . all they need is a situation that resonates with one , and a single look .  heugh’s the one who instigates it the most unsurprisingly . his favorites are the ones she hates and wishes he’d let die , but won’t , because there’s way too much flavor in the way she glares at him when he puts that elephant in the room with them at the worst time imaginable . but even despite how much he enjoys agitating her , heugh’ll never have as impeccable timing as she does . bernie doesn’t stoop to his level often since she’s become a bit desensitized to heugh’s bullshit over the years since he cracks open that can at every opportune moment that he thinks won’t bleed the well too dry , and she has by leaps and bounds more restraint than he does on the topic ---   but when she does , it just fucking obliterates him with how impeccable her timing can be and god . he adores her for it

meta questions: why does ezra hate heugh so much? when does he realize he hates him? when does he decide to kill heugh? how does he feel afterward?

     this is a good post to refer to . to expand on a lot of what’s left out in it : arthur was a horrible father to ezra because he was a child that had been conceived outside of his and heugh’s marriage , and hid it well from heugh who at the time felt he couldn’t really do much else at the time since arthur had him so demoralized and subservient to his whims but to believe him when he started to say and act as though he was finally beginning to accept ezra as one of the children . when heugh would be away at work , arthur displayed obvious favoritism among the children ( mable and zachariah , at the time ) and would emotionally abuse , and often times neglect ezra in favor of tending to his biological children’s whims and needs . it built up a lot of resentment in ezra towards heugh and his siblings , and made him feel estranged from the family , and it only became worse when he confronted heugh about the situation . heugh felt pressured to confess his wrongdoing , and it disgusted ezra to the point where any salvaging of their relationship was considered unlikely . it broke heugh’s heart , but he felt like he deserved it , as he did throughout a lot of the abuse he’d suffered under arthur’s thumb throughout the pregnancy . he wanted nothing to do with heugh . he either refused to let both he and the baby sleep in the house , and heugh would have to either stay with his mother ( as he did through most of the time he’d been carrying ) , or he’d leave altogether to get a motel and sleep there . heugh didn’t know what to do . arthur convinced him to stay , and he was desperate to keep his husband . he thought he deserved to be treated like that because of what he did . he really , really did . the manipulation really messed with him for a long time .      ezra probably started to have his first thoughts on harming his father when he was in his mid teens , that’s when a lot of the frustrations and fights began to break out . he probably started to actually lay out a plan when he was in his early twenties . mable was already unimpressed with heron and it’s ethics , and in turn her father’s , so it wasn’t difficult for him to fashion a creditable lie that would convince her that their father was insane , dangerous , and needed to die . zachariah just didn’t want any part of it . so he left the family . david did the same . so mable was left alone with just ezra , and his lies . she was unfortunately , susceptible . she has heugh killed when he’s seventy four via two large caliber rounds to the chest while he’s appreciating his tuesday morning in his kitchen , sniper fire , through his kitchen window . bernie thawe finds him twenty six hours later slumped back against his kitchen sink .     it leaves ezra with all of his power , and unsatisfied . he’s killed by his sister when she realizes the mistake she’s made in an act of vengeance , and heron is dissolved . eventually she does get back in contact with her brothers zac and david     —     but it’s not the same . but they do heal , and become close again .
